When I watch Letterman performances I always ask myself "I wonder what Paul Shaffer was thinking during this?" Suffice to say I am positive he was blown away. Letterman seemed to be as well.
Win Butler and Josh Deu began performing in Boston as Arcade Fire before moving to Montreal in 2001, recording the "2001 Demos" prior to their arrival in the city. The earliest Montreal-based incarnation of Arcade Fire began performing in the summer/fall of 2001, almost entirely in lofts and art galleries.
Their passion is so passionate and intense. Intensely passionate. The attitude is compelling. Rock and Roll never sounded so strong, so profound. This, and Neil Gaiman's Blandman comic(s), show the sheep up for the pretenders they are.
I believe the violinist Sarah Newfeld is from BC... Anyway, except for Will (the crazy drummer in this video) , I think they all lived an studied in Montréal. So it is correct to say that the band is from "french Canada". Régine at the piano, is from Longueuil, just the other side of the "Fleuve St-Laurent" . Vive Montréal!!
Richard lost his glasses during the performance. Well, not too long after, he started wearing contacts when they were performing. It's probably more comfortable for him, too.
I think they had a show on Conan the night before or so.. and they had an equally impressive set there too. I had heard about them just a few weeks before.. they were literally playing high schools and small venues just weeks before that. They had an insanely meteoric rise.
Canada has a lot of great musicians and bands, and in certain genres (especially 'Indie') Canada is a bit ahead. But that is beside the point. There is greatness everywhere..it's just that higher populations and more cities of opportunity yield a higher number of good and shitty musicians getting big enough for you to hear them. Can we please not start the Justin Bieber thing? Country borders don't really justify where good music comes from anyway, agree?
You have Justin Bieber too so...America has led to several great artists like The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Flaming Lips, The Stooges, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Pixies, Nirvana, R.E.M etc. Canada is responsible for great stuff like Arcade Fire and Neil Young but don't think Canada is ahead in music.
Nobody in the audience was ready for this.
Delta Giant nope! Well said! Hahaha
I saw these guys way before they were big. I was on mushrooms....I had to leave the show for a bit...it was overwhelming.
16 years later, I wasn't ready...
First time I ever heard of Arcade Fire was when this was on Letterman. Everyone in the room watching with me was amazed and we all became fans of them
I saw them in a tiny restaurant in Vancouver playing this album… it was amazing
So insanely jealous

one of my favourite songs from them. I miss the original band members, especially the french horn, amazing sound! cute too !
one of my favourite bands..
This must be write in history's books!
2022: destined for musical greatness!
They really played their hearts out, like their whole career depended on it
Him playing the guitar backwards is strangely adorable...
One of my favorite Letterman musical performances. Fantastic.
That. Was. Unbelievable. Amen.
I hope all of you have the absolute pleasure of seeing them live. I saw them at Bonnaroo and I want to relive that moment forever.
love the ending. beautiful chaos
I will never be happy in my life why, because I'm not in the best band in the world, Arcade Fire.
This is awesome, great performers.
just fucking beautifully performed
Wow,very very good!

unbelievably intense, one of the best versions, although it has been shortened. The other version I really like is the one they play on Pinkpop
Woodlands!!!!!
You just can't keep your feet still while listening to this.
Kick ass band when your in the mood. (like every other band or genera) As in this band kicks ass!

Looks like very different people come on scene to play music, but they play like real band and like one person
I feel as if this song was too intense to be played on letterman live haha
Perhaps every band should have some guy wandering about the stage with a drum.

The Butler brothers, were from Texas. They all pretty much got together while at university and stuff.

probably
excellent factoid
@lemans24fan
Look at them on Top of the Pops. they were probably in a smaller place and it only made it even better :P
Italians listen to it every evening. They know what I mean.
A chi lo dici. Questa esibizione penso abbia lasciato interdetti tutti in quello studio.
Quasi un’ossessione... ahaha
@2:05
Win and Will Butler grew up in Texas
But went to university in Montreal, where they formed the band and did most of their first gigs to become noticed.
Is this the band's first TV appearance?
I think they had a show on Conan the night before or so.. and they had an equally impressive set there too. I had heard about them just a few weeks before.. they were literally playing high schools and small venues just weeks before that. They had an insanely meteoric rise.
Lol. Came back to this comment and wanted to reply to it, only to realize I HAD ALREADY REPLIED TO IT 6 MONTHS AGO.
Yo Win your guitar is backwards.
It's was funny I guess

Wait, why did Win start playing the back of the guitar?
Great question. One of life’s great mysteries. Lol.
I wanna smoke pot with Win Butler
So I do

"There from Frech Canada" Paul Schaefer should stop talking.
I’ve always hated this bad but this song is decent and this is a great performance. The lyrics are pretty much worthless though
