A key milestone has been reached in the production of the Tyne and Wear Metro ‘s new train fleet, with work getting underway on the all-important wheel sets.
Stadler, the Swiss train manufacturer which is building 46 new trains on behalf of Metro’s operator Nexus, has started the manufacturing process on what are termed ‘bogies’ - the structures with the train wheels attached that carry the bodyshells.
The production of 276 bogies, six for each new Metro train, is taking place at Stadler’s factory in Valencia
The final assembly process is continuing at Stadler’s factory in Switzerland in December 2021¸ which involves fitting the main vehicle components, seats, windows and flooring.
The bogies for the first new train will be attached to the bodyshells in Switzerland in the next couple of months. It is scheduled to arrive in north east England for testing at the end of this year - heralding the start of a new era in comfort and reliability for Metro customers.
