  • As we move into the growth phase of the spring season we are often presented with odd, little intricacies of species-specific behavior. Needle drop can occur for some species as a normal loss of second-year needles, but some forms of needle drop may indicate a deeper health issue. In this stream, learn to differentiate between species-specific nuances and possible health issues that may indicate a disease, pest, or issue within the root system.

Hey Ryan, greath talk on phyto problems.
Maybe one thing to consider when mentioning solutions involving chemical products, is in some cases, like in Canada, not sure if it's the same case in US, the products used by professionals like you, are not available as domestic products and require licences to obtain, and volume invole and price can be overwhelming to most of us having smaller collections.
If any, possibly relate to domestic available products. If not available in a country, one can relate to the active ingredients and try to find a domestic version.
    Thanks!

I tend to over pot which is DEADLY for a tree.

The pot tipping works! Video came just in time to save my RMJ which dropped 50% of foliage. OMG. Drilled more holes into the wooden box as per Michael Hagedorn and tipping the pot worked! The remaining 50% is growing well. I am afraid of using Aliette and Subdue Max, worry that they may kill my endo/ecto mycorrhizae which I added. What about Hygrozyme? Using Hygrozyme to dissolve the dead roots? Thanks Ryan.

My noble fir which was extremely healthy this spring with an abundance of new buds and growth is suddenly starting to turn brown over much of its foliar mass. It's not clear if the portions which are dying are exclusively older portions but that does seem to be the general trend.
The tree was not kept in a greenhouse this winter. It's possible then that there may have been damage to the roots from the cold although it didn't seem to have been cold enough for this. My guess is an anaerobic environment brought on by prolonged wetness since this spring has been extremely wet.
Is there anything I can do in addition to attempting to let the roots dry to help reduce the stress on the tree. Note that at this point more than half of the tree is brown.
Or have I killed yet another tree?

Sweet tree but I’d graft better foliage onto it to take it to another level

Ryan, 2 week ago I bought a AP Emerald lace (4' high) the leaves are slowly turning brown, could this be because of a change in environment or would i need to look at the roots and slip pot?

It's difficult to watch this guy's videos, while informative I feel like he uses big words just for the sake of using big words.

Instead of being intimidated by Ryan's use of "big words", why not learn what those words mean? A great wayto start would be by getting a copy of 'Modern Bonsai Practice' by Larry Morton (2016). He explains horticultural terms in relation to bonsai in an understandable manner. After reading it and continuing to use it as a reference, my success rate with developing and refined bonsai has definitely improved.
