She's not drunk any alcohol for two years, and used all the spare time that not drinking gives her to create art she then sells on Etsy. Lifechanging- good luck to you.

@@kenthigginbottom8958 That's exactly it, I used to think it was just me but everyone I speak to about it is the same. Up until my late 20s , a bacon, sausage & tomato sandwich at work would sort me out on a Monday morning and by Tuesday I was looking forward to the 4 day weekend sesh again, but when 30 came it was like flicking a switch. I was at an annual music festival in Ireland and woke up on the second morning thinking how I never used to feel so knackered. All my mates had already had their breakfast and gone out again but I didn't get out of bed until after 2pm, and it was downhill after that. The sessions got less and the hangovers got longer after that. The recovery time became an extra day for every decade older I got, so now I'm pushing 60 I carefully pick and choose when to have a drink. Last Christmas Day was the first time I didn't drink at all for over 40 years and I enjoyed it just as much plus I remembered everything about it.

Your mindset is the key to success. I know from my own success in quitting smoking back in 2004. Once I had realised I no longer "need" to smoke, quitting actually became quite easy. Making that psychological break is what did it and made that journey to non-smoking less bumpy. Draw up a costs/benefits chart for binge drinking. Under costs you list all the negatives that binge drinking gives you - I'm sure you can think of a lot more than just having accidents. Under benefits you list the positives of binge drinking. Hopefully you will end up with a longer list of costs to benefits to aid you in keeping free of booze. You do not "need" to drink alcohol. It is "not" essential to your life. One final thing: put all the money you would have spent on booze away in a savings account. You'll will soon get to see another "cost" of binge drinking and a "benefit" of quitting. Good luck with your continued success.
If you do find yourself facing a moment of weakness, sit down and work out exactly how much money you have spent on booze in the last 36 years.

My father often told me how he had to go and get his father at the bar when he was a child and then one day my grandfather just decided to stop and he never touch alchohol again. I never saw him drunk , he stopped before my mom and dad got married and he died when I was 16 so I guess it he stopped drinking at least 20 years before he died. You can do it, just hang in there and pray every day for the strength to say no.

Well done Gareth. Doing an update every week - at least until you are truely over it - is a good idea. There is power in public shaming and you have us to answer to as well as your family if you fall off the waggon. Incidentally the phrase "on the waggon" refers to condemed hanging victims going to the gallows on a waggon not being allowed to get drunk to escape the experience... it's a peculiar old saying.

Sending ghost hugs!! You look great. One wake-up call was smashing my windshield on a toll-booth arm. The arm has a red reflective sticker on it, so the next morning my husband saw the smashed windshield and the red and thought I hit someone. I couldn't say 100% I didn't. That was it. Now, it is soooooo nice waking up on New Year's Day without a hangover. In years past, that day has been a recovery day. Now I can actually enjoy being off. Keep going, Gareth!! You are rocking it!!

I've been there, mate, and now cannot understand that getting trashed on alcohol, losing a couple of days and not functioning afterwards that I had a good time! Not mentioning the money i spent. Hi Gareth I'm glad to see you are doing ok. Just a reminder that if any of your viewers are constantly drinking and are on hard drinks like vodka etc, don't just stop. Seek advice and come of gradually. I was a hard drinker and stopped, I ended up in a and e having withdrawal fits. It is quite common for people to fall of the wagon, and like you said if you have the right mindset get back on. It helps if you have support, you may have to ditch some of your drinking buddies as they may encourage you just to have one it won't hurt. Then you find your on a session.

I still drink now and then but I limit myself to 2 or 3 and I consume about one or two a month. I have bottles and bottles of drink left over from xmas and parties that just sit there and I no longer even have an urge to drink them. It takes a long time but it is worth it.
