  • Volcano update from Iceland. May 6, 2024. There is almost no lava in the crater after I flew over it this afternoon. However the landrise continues and we might see a new breakout anytime soon, in same area. Rather strong earthquake 3.3 with aftershock shook Reykjavik a few hours ago (at depth of 5 km). Epicenter was north west of Kleifarvatn, closer to Trolladyngja and Mount Keilir, where we saw a lot of seismic activity prior to 2023 eruption. 00:26 - Flying towards the erupting cone 00:48 - Magnitude 3.3 Earthquake close to Keilir 03:54 - Flyover above the crater 04:21, 04:31 - Zoom-in into the crater. Just tiny glow detected. Volcano is on the point of death! 05:41 - Inflation episodes (graph) 09:58 - Blue Lagoon on May 6 BONUS LAVA VIDEOS: 11:34 - Eruption of Litlihrutur in summer 2023 13:35 - Lava spillover in Meradalir in summer 2022 17:18 - Observing Litlihrutur Eruption in 2023

    You should be the first to get a press card. You were the first and only person to show us the volcanoes in 2023 from the beginning. All the best to you!🌋

      Also showing large chunks of video from previous eruptions which were far more dramatic than the current one. This is not good photo-journalism IMHO.

    Phenomenal drone shots. Very clear, stable, & far-seeing. Gives a good overview of the area. It’s amazing how much smoke is being emitting from the volcano.

    • @GodmanchesterGoblin
      @GodmanchesterGoblin Před měsícem

      A large chunk of this video is not from the current eruption. While the current eruption creates some smoke, it is relatively little.

    • @westtex3675
      @westtex3675 Před měsícem

      Most of the video was recent enough for me. Only the final maybe ~40% was from long ago, which is not news to anyone. Regardless, my comment stands.

    Absolutely you deserve better access, like other CZcamsrs who (i dont think?) have been doing this as long as you. You were on the scene almost as soon as lava appeared in Reykjanes, hiking up those trails no matter how far away they got, putting in the hard work to bring us classic footage like lava devils(!) over a stunning Mordor lake. Your eye & your drone work are every bit as adaept as...other CZcamsrs. 😉

    When these vents stop erupting and dry out on the very next day
    it’s amazing how the inside walls look like the
    old rock of everyday road cuts.

    Hmm.. I think the long pressure and the heat is pushing magma into the furthest reaches of the north/south ends of the crack, it would still be lot of old and new rubble inside the cracks blocking access to the empty spaces still left behind. Also IMO too many think of volcanos if its a chimney, but fissure volcanos are a different breed in a class of their own.

  • @dalelyon4088
    @dalelyon4088 Před měsícem

    Arrived up yesterday and was surprised how many people were still staying and using the Blue Lagoon at this time. Is that not where they reckon the current magma chamber is?

    Thank you, Roman, for the update. You mentioned that tourism is down and you speculated that people aren't coming to Iceland for fear of the next eruption. I would speculate that people aren't coming because they are not allowed to hike up the mountains near the volcano to watch the eruption like they were able to do in the past. Why come to Iceland if you can't view the volcano?

    Ohh they got so close to filming that lava! Didn't they feel the heat? lol 14:50 . Brave souls they are ;) . But it is VERY cool footage, thank you!
    Re: the power plant, I've wondered and mentioned a cpl times on whether they should be considering protecting it better, like just over that hill by the road on the west side, where the present eruption is?
    Should lava end up travelling towards the PP other ways other than how it has travelled so far...

    Anyone going in should be going at their own risk, if there is a need to send in someone for a body or an injured person that should be paid for by the victim. If they refuse to believe experts and signs they are fools that goes for the news media too.

    • @IcelandExplorer
      @IcelandExplorer  Před měsícem

      I understand your point...but the next eruption poses a threat to Grindavik indeed as walls are too shallow to hold 200 m3 of lava per sec...lava is likely to break down into the city. Even Prof Tumi Gudmundsson, Ofeigsson of MetOffice tells that the next eruption will be dangerous. Its good to warn authorities to push them to take mote preventive measures as raising walls
