It is possible to restore our landscapes and even revive rivers. In the Chambal region of India Dr. Rajendra Singh helped this region transition from violence and despair, to peace and prosperity. This was done by working with water and nature, using indigenous knowledge of traditional water harvesting techniques, implemented by local communities.

All my life I've wanted to do something to reverse humanity's destruction and mismanagement of the land. When I was 7 years old, my dad tells me I started singing a lament for the Earth in the back of the car when we were out running errands. I don’t remember what I sang, but he said it was one of the most beautiful and moving things he’s ever heard. Now, as an adult, I see that restoring the land is our only way forward. We are not going to be rescued by big corporations or ever more complex technologies, but we can save ourselves by bringing life back to the land, and it all starts with the water.
I want to do Water Stories’ Core Course Essentials because I see it as my purpose in life to be one of the people taking action in the world to reverse the deterioration of our landscapes. Wherever we live, wherever we come from, there are positive things that can be done to manage our water more skillfully. I want to have the knowledge and skills to do this where I live, and to teach others to do the same.
We have a small regenerative croft in the Scottish Highlands. Scotland has a reputation as a wet place, but we've experienced drought five years out of seven. I've been installing water harvesting systems and ponds since we arrived, with much larger systems planned. The site has been planted with 10,000 trees in shelterbelt systems, because it's a very exposed site and in summer the winds are desiccating. Inside the shelterbelts are fruit and nut producing species in strips, with the long term aim to graze small livestock underneath. We also grow a lot of biomass willow to run the rocket mass heater and ovens. Our focus this year will be on developing the livestock feeding systems, which will be typha mostly. Our aim is to create a regenerative community over time, as close to a closed loop as is possible. We have committed to sharing it all online, with no paywalls. Ever. I have done a little consultation work recently, and feel this course would round out my understanding of the course.
Just graduated from a Horticulture program & as a student of the arid west, I became very interested in water management & the techniques advocated by Brad Lancaster. I love your videos & talks Water Stories & was excited you are now offering a water program.
I would love to take the course because I live in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the state is currently in a water crisis. My husband's family is from an indigenous village where they were traditional subsistence farmers. The "green" revolution pushed the community members to produce corn to sell and have money to buy things rather than simply producing all they needed. Expanding corn production into marginal slopes led to the rapid degradation of the soils. When these lands no longer produced well, the switched to free grazing of goats and cows. The overgrazing further degraded the landscape. The river that previously ran through the dry season is now dry 6 months of the year. We are are both teachers in public education and spend our weekends working to restore the village lands.
Watch videos about syntropic agriculture and making "Johnson Su compost" etc. It will definitely help! I know how it is to not have the money for such courses, but you can learn a ton just out of CZcams!

There are a ton of free resources on CZcams on how to regreen degraded lands. The key is to Slow the water, Spread the water, and Sink the water into the ground to recharge plant life and ground water aquifers. You can do this by building water slowing structures, like One Rock Dams (ORDs) or Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) in seasonal streams, thereby prolonging their flow and keeping the water on the land for longer. You can also dig Swales, which are ditches on contour that collects runoff on rain events and pacifies it and let it sink into the ground. You can dig Ponds that collect excess water during the wet season, so that you can use it during the dry season. You can combine all of the techniques to form a network of interconnected ponds, swales and irrigation canals that keep all your land moist during the whole year. The key is to store the water as high up in the landscape as possible, to be able to use gravity to transport it. I can recommend book(s) from Brad Lancaster called "Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and beyond" (I've read and used Part 1 and Part 2) that show you step by step how to achieve this. I've tried to collect a number of videos in www.reddit.com/r/RainwaterHarvesting/ , you just need to go through it from the beginning since there are a number of people that think that all that rainwater harvesting is about is collecting rain from roofs into IBC totes.

I am in my 30s and would like to change my job and pursue in future a profession with a deeper meaning that fits well to my abilities. When I heard about Sepp Holzer's projects a few years ago, I was enthusiastic, but I couldn't imagine that this was a profession that you could actually pursue. Fortunately, that has now changed and I am exited that you have set up this course. As a nature fan, it depresses me to see how the world is suffering from climate change and the consequences of capitalism. I have been living in Spain for quite a while and I see how a large part of the country is threatened or already affected by the increasing devastation of the country. I would like to change this and your course gives me the tools to fight the devastation in Spain and on the planet.

In the face of food shortages and scuppered trade deals for the UK, I want to move to Spain, the garden of Europe, with my family and start a smallholding to provide food and ensure a future for my kids. I want my children to grow up and live in an environment that doesn't trap them in wage slavery and gives them the opportunity to live well, eat well and remain comfortable in their bodies. I want that for myself too.
Spain is suffering from intense drought and the amount of food they are able to export is falling. If we can't fix that, the whole of Europe will be in the middle of a food shortage crisis. Billions will suffer. We need as many water restoration practitioners as we can get out there.
I've gained so much from the water stories content and would love to deepen my knowledge and skills through the core course to devote the rest of my life to ecological and hydrological restoration
I am 43, trained as physical-chemist, have been working in the pharmaceutical industry for 13+ yrs, 3 yrs in the Nuclear power plant, finished Dr. Elaine Ingham FC and CLP, 18 year of suffering in the manipulating home environment and trying to change my profession to trully solving the root causes of health of the peole and erth. I'm living in India. We are already experinceing water shortages and are paying for water to water our gardens. I want to learn how to harvest nd conserve water so we can have enough water to grow food for our community. We would also like to teach others how to restore water in our area.
I'm from a rural town in Chile, we have felt the consecuences of drought and destroying actions of poor water managment and abuse of the land. I feel that taking the course i can be a force for change in my comunity, starting with my land and then working with my neighbors. I hope i can win this! ❤
I live in a dry tropical forest climate. We have had a lot of drought, to the degree that from 2016 to 2019, we had no rain. This led to have to sell our small cattle herd. I have taken some online permaculture courses and have done some work in water retention. We had a stream that went dry and have been able to keep it flowing for the last 2 years almost all year round. Also, we had a wildfire that destroyed almost all our trees and pastures before it was put out and then the drought came. It was really chaotic. There are some places where I don´t know what I can do to have better results in water harvesting. I have worked mostly in the ravines to slow water down, planted trees, used some vetiver grass, built two ponds, one of which didn´t work well and and the retaining wall went down, even though it was constructed by "engineer". So, I´m interested in the course so I can have better information to do a better job on my land. I want it to be a "showroom" for my neighbors who also go through the same things we have gone through. Thanks.

creating sponges in an exponential way!
Globally we all need water system restorations and sponge systems instead
of sealed in urban spaces and in landscapes,
soils in agriculture and forests are 99% not resilient
because of the wrong way to handle these resources.

As a child I lived in Africa and I have seen the importance of water. I would love to make a difference in this world and do the course and go out.
Zach, this story resonated so hard with my exact surrounding environment. I am based in rural northern Mozambique where there is no running water and ground water is salted. We regularly experience cholera outbreaks, food security collapse and more frequently we are seeing violent conflict in our district. I am working on a small agroforestry project that aims to train rural farmers, but without water and 9 months of drought success is limited and slow. I have already signed up and committed to the advance course and I cannot wait. Much love.
I retrained as a plumber in 2007 & worked in various aspects until 2020. - partly for the obvious reason but also because the end delivery of water was not addressing the problem I could see growing. Would like to do the course to finally make some real impacts in the environment, for the flora and fauna, including human beings! I am tired of this conventional farming practices, tired of eating food, which is not food anymore, tasting like water, having no nutritionals benefits, no, even making us sick! I want to do something meaningful with my time on earth!
I am an environmental design graduate from Cape Town, South Africa. My final thesis was on food insecurity and water scarcity in CPT. I have been trying to transition into landscape architecture/design as my passion lies in the bridge between the built environment and the natural environment. With lots of development going up, the value on natural systems goes down as the functionality of a building begins to incorporate growing food and collecting water. Yes, its the smart thing to do but is it whats best for future generations? While reducing CO2 levels is important in the big city, lower income areas are still suffering due to displacement issues which happened years ago. I would love to do this course as it refocuses the subject on cooling the earth, empowerment through education and ownership of the land. Building water systems in smaller areas of Cape Town would not only help the people who occupy those areas but also allow them to grow food for the purpose of reselling. We need to shift the focus and allow a more organic conversation to flow from engaging smaller communities to boost the economy and not only rely on new development to house foreigners visiting the country (which helps 100%).
Water is Life. Water is a prime provider for survival and must be valued and respected. The course could continue to provide me practical measures to assist in water restoration globally. My goal is to serve and educate and honor indigenous, first teachings fostering avenues for sustained peace. I am hopefully chosen to participate in the course. Poked and dismissed. I have owned and operated dump trucks for 25 years, have been doing light excavation for 15, I am in the process of transitioning the focus of my work to water harvesting. Even where I live in the Pacific Northwest know for its abundant rainfall we are facing a summer with well below average snow levels and still treating water as a problem the be piped away. The reason I would love to participate in the course is that people in my region (southwestern andalucia) did not get taught to use water in a sustainable way and it reflects in the landscape we grow our food on. With my community of young farmers together we started going around and spreading the importance of regenerating landscapes and there is some people of older generations that are very open to that which makes us very happy.
With the information that I learn in this course, I feel confident that I can give back to my community and teach about the ways of restoring our once water rich landscapes. 🙏

We are a water stressed country. Communities are suffering and we are already seeing violence and desperation. Need to understand how Rajender Singh has transformed his region and made life better for his community.
I live in a waterscape community in Yolo County California, where i have learned the methods and practices used by Michael Corbett to design the Village Homes community, utilizing rainwater as a conector for the dwellings with the landscape, harvesting water to nurture plant growth. I am also actively documenting the adoption of the California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), in Yolo County, where the agricultural landscape is being transformed from annual crop rotational systems to perennial vine and tree plantations, having significant implications to groundwater sustainability. The watersheds along the foothills of the Vaca Mountains have been deteriorated by animal grazing and mismanagement of the land, causing head cut damage, and water spills, with no place and space for water to flow slowly and rest to replenish aquifers. I hope to learn the basic principles your course is offering to advance my knowledge in my desire to work with the rural communities in this region for them to regenerate their watersheds and enhance water harvesting.

I would so love to go through the course. I have been following Water Stories for years as well as many others, Geoff Lawton, Brad Lancaster, Paul Gaouchi, Paul Wheaton. I would love to apply these principles to the dehydrated landscapes in the urban and suburban setting.
I think water is becoming such a fundamental issue and I would love to learn how to make the very best use of this resource in my own life and in the landscape, especially in the foothills/prairie region I live in which is semi-arid. World Peace is closer if all children and their parents would be taught these water harvesting principles and also Permaculture in the wider sense.
I think that if you can make a beautiful video that shows both that it can be done and in addition how it can be done in the area people live in it can really kickstart positive change. I love Andrew Millison his videos for this reason. It doesn't only tell what to do but also how it can be done in detail so people can start themselves and activate others in their communities.

I live in the south of Portugal and desertification is the norm. People are scared that this area will not be liveable in sooner future. I want to gain knowledge and experiences in this course to help natural processes to recover and societies to be resilient.

I am well on the way to a lifelong commitment to this profession. I am 23 years old. This April I begin the 2024 Whole System’s Design Apprenticeship program.
I am already positioned as a heavy equipment operator; employed by company that provides forestry mulching and land clearing services. I wholeheartedly believe I can harness this opportunity to apply the principles in the Core Course by tapping into and expanding the company’s thriving market, which might be called “rural property value enhancement.”
I have the opportunity to seriously apply principles of Water Stories at a far-reaching scale, and joining the course will greatly compound my impact on Water and Peace.
I would love to do the Core Course Essentials. I have a background in horticulture and arboriculture and have spent the last few years working in marketing. I am currently unemployed and I am trying to pivot back into the climate space. I believe that a lot of the issues surrounding climate change can be solved by regenerating the small water cycle and the soils, as they both bring life and play an enormous part in conflict resolution. Soil sovereignty, water sovereignty and food sovereignty can and will change millions of lives across the globe and the solutions are simple. Using indigenous knowledge and educating the local populations can empower them to live better and more peaceful lives. I would love to take this course because I come from a family of farmers, but have become very disconnected growing up in a city as my grandmother moved to NY. I’m an adult now and I can contribute to deciding what to do with our land down South in the US - and one of my ideas is to create a community garden. Knowing the fundamentals of water will help me grasp how to effectively care for the soil and get back to my family’s roots. I believe this will also help me branch out to other forms of environmentalism. I was never good at science but everyone can learn something when given the tools and patience. ❤

How can we teach people in urbanised environments? I see people thinks of water as a commodity, and food as goods, something you buy instead of something you grow. Agriculture is another industry in the so called developed countries, nobody wants to get involved in rural activities if not as a hobby, because they see it as something inferior or even debased. I am so frustrated and angry I find so hard to talk about water restoration with others.
