Fred was a National Icon because of these TV series, introduced a lot of people to the old engineering methods.
When he sadly left the world The people of Bolton came out to give him a good send-off.

Iv been watching this man all evening. As someone who worked plasterer up on many scaffolds . I just cant believe how this man can work with such a carefree way with such precision in a position where one slip or missed hand grip and your done. Different level of human.

I'm from Bolton and when i was about 18 two of my really good mates were both seeing 2 of Freds daughters from his first marriage to Alison (his wife in this video) one was with his oldest daughter Jane (who i was actually good friends with for quite a few years after she split up with my mate Billy Booth) who was also 18. My other Mate John Hulton was seeing his youngest daughter Lorna who was only 15 but John was only 17 so they had Alison's blessing...but not Fred's though. 😂 Unfortunately at the time Fred and Alison were going through rough times and it was just before their divorce which i think is featured later in this series. Thinking back on it now i think Alison used to use us all a bit as a way of pissing Fred off at the time because he was never with her! We used to all pile round about 2 or 3 car fulls of us and she was always really happy to see us all and she regularly handed round cans of Beer from Freds personal stash!😬 Every time i was there the only thing i ever remember is him coming home from work and hearing him moaning about 'his house always being full of young bloody men who always left him with nothing too bloody drink' 😂. He would then just grab something too eat and go off mumbling into the yard to work on his tractor. At the time we all knew he was on TV but at that age it wasn't of any real interest too us at all apart from telling everyone we went round his house! Its sad really because with hindsight i would have loved too have got to know him like i see him in these videos as i know my mate Billy would have as well because we both became very mechanically minded later...Instead at the time we just saw him as this moaning disapproving old Dad of some girls my friends were seeing. A very good bloke though if it was me these days i would go off my head if my house was full of young lads sniffing round my daughters and drinking my beer everytime i got in from work!! Good too see someone your age especially so far away in both distance and in years taking an interest and showing him some of the respect that i wish we had back then. Thank you.

Old school balls of steel. Up there I wouldn't be knocking bricks off the chimney, I'd be shitting them. Up there, one look down I'd probably freeze with fear. Funny story, I knew a kid when I was at school, fancied himself the stuntman/daredevil. He free climbed a tall chimney like this, got to the top, looked down, froze, couldn't move (climbing down is scarier, riskier than climbing up). In the end they had to call out a helicopter to rescue him. We were (all his friends and schoolmates) standing at the bottom of the chimney laughing our bollocks off at his panicked screams. When the chopper came and had him in harness, he was still clinging to the chimney and wouldn't let go.

Fred came to our town of Doncaster once. He was at a "Fair" with lots of exhibits and he'd bought his Traction Engine. But he was sitting down on grass, taking questions and telling us about himself. He was incredibly genuine and nice, and took the time to meet many of us. My goodness me he had nerves of steel.

What you said about that "watch later" list rang a bell ... I didn't realise they just disappear, so the day I came to start watching the 100 or 200 I'd put in that list over the course of a year or so, it was completely empty. If I'd known it doesn't actually save them I would have bookmarked them instead.

The posh boy is clearly trying to rip Fred off.
Starts off at £1,000, then increases it to £1,500, then Fred offers £2,000, and now he wants £2,500.
