This song is brilliant. I can hardly get my mind around the ability to create a great song, make it funny as hell and still have the gravity of real pathos. Amazing
I am now the proud owner of a 4000 dollar 2500 dollar car. This song has been running through my head for every trip to autozone and every repair bill.
Came here after watching People's Court. Judge Milian said before buying a thousand dollar car to listen to this song. I've never heard this song. How did I get through the 90s without hearing it?
There's something deeply wise about this tune. But just one bit of context: I know a Serbian guy, mechanical engineer, whose first job out of university in the mid-eighties was for Yugo. He told me once: "Anyone can make a $100,000 Mercedes. Making a $5000 car - that took real engineering."
How many people are here because Judge Marilyn Milian from People's Court said, "I'm going to need you to CZcams a song called "A Thousand Dollar Car'? Garsh, I owned this car, and I LOVED it!!!! (Brand New 91 Honda Civic)
i have a friend who received a heart transplant, which cost medicaid 1.6 million dollars. so i was like, "he's a 1.6 million dollar man." but then i realized he was basically just 1.6 million dollar thousand dollar man. there you are!
A late friend once bought a proverbial $1000.00 car in LA and drove it almost all the way to Kennesaw Georgia. He said it broke down on I75 in Marietta just a few miles from home, such a free spirit he was Rip Luke We miss you buddy.
If anyone tells you to just "buy a beater" after your vehicle takes a shit, show them this! I got that "just buy a beater" advice so much before I finally got my good one.
Judge Marilyn Millian LOVES this song and refers litigants on "The Peoples Court" to look up this song when they unhappy about the "AS IS" purchase. I really got a kick out of these clever lyrics (as great and clever and hilarious as aJon Hiatt song) LOVE THESE GUYS. In a way the lead singer sounds a little bit like REM in this song. Does anyone else hear that? Liked and subscribed.😂🤣😎
i paid $250 for a dodge dart and drove it successfully from charlottesville VA to asheville NC and back and then Charlottesville, VA to Philadelpia PA and back (had to walk three miles from a rest stop to get a new starter on that trip -- only $80 in the hole!) and then from staunton VA to ann arbor MI and abandoned it. best $250 i ever spent!
I worked all winter delivering Chinese food with a guy driving a $75 Buick in 1981-82. In the spring he took it out and jumped it repeatedly off a hill until it wouldn't go any more. Then he drove off in his new $150 Buick like royalty.
$800 and I drive her still. 226k and counting. Of course a $1,000 car from Missouri is already rusted to the frame lol 1999 Mercury Mountaineer ! Arizona!
One time I bought an $ 800.00 Jeep Cherokee and drove it for a year and sold it for $ 1200.00. Other than that one lucky streak this song is 100% true.
I once saw an old piece of crap in a parking lot that someone had repainted with a brush and you could see the brushstrokes and I must admit from a distance it looked pretty good. LOL
I 😍 this song. Reminds me of all the crap cars I stood next to on the side of some highway. The mechanics I met in the middle of deserts and Malibu too 😂
the brown dodge or plymouth at 0:45 looks like my dads old work car and i think he only paid 600 or 700 and we all laughed in 1981 but he said it would stop on a dime lol i miss old dad
In Maryland, you only need to get a used car through inspection ONCE to get tags/title. No annual check, thank the automotive gods. Many, many years ago I drove three beaters I paid less than $1000 each for (two were rotary engine Mazdas that nobody else wanted--paid $750 for one and got two years out of it--only broke down once when I was too cheap to get a new battery. Paid $600 for the other, an automatic with working A/C(!). Sold it a year later for $500 after 'sinking' $150 into it to get it through inspection). Good times!
Bought a '93 F150 4x4 for 800 in 2011. Ran for 3 years w/ no problems except needing a starter after i drove through a flooded bridge just about up to the hubs. Sold it for 600 with flat tire and about an inch of play in the ball joints.
@@Pisomajado lol nope she's got her original 71,000 mile engine and runs great and gets around 35 MPG in town. And with the current cost of gas she's staying an economy car.

Been there too. It's amazing how many things I was able to fix on my old truck with 2 - in - 1 epoxy or hand made parts from stuff laying around the yard.
1978 I bought a $50.00 car , 1965 Chevy Key Biscayne - I drove it a year and left it on the side of the road, called a recycle yard and sold that car for $50.00 .... twas a good year
Great song without a doubt. I bought a '98 Dakota with 90,000 miles on it for $1300.00. It has 130,000 on it now and I am still laughing. Spent very little on it in repairs. I run that POS through all of the snow and salt that Wisconsin has to offer while keeping my expensive vehicles in my heated garage all winter. Trick is to not spend $1000.00 on a $300.00 car.
I pushed about every car I ever owned and believe me I’ve owned several. Love this song would like to get permission to use it on my CZcams videos when I buy these junk cars.
Back in the day, you could buy a '66 pontiac for 100 bucks, drive it into the ground, That would take a couple of years, then you'd buy another one. Honestly, that was a really cheap way to handle your transportation needs, but yeah, I wouldn't trust a car like that on a cross country trip either.
Wish I found this when I had my $1000 S10 with a $1000 transmission job or my $1000 Dakota with $1000 in rebuilt differentials those days are long gone now I have a $2700 $1000 truck and every other repair is a major $1000 job

With all due respect, there wasn't any real engineering in a Yugo, other than the manufacturing. It was a brand new $5,000 "thousand dollar car."
Judge Milian from The People's Court suggested one of her litigants listen to this... So true!!!!
And again today!
I saw the replay of this on August 2019. That led me here.
Jim Santos same here, she said I tunes but I don't use I tunes.
