    I've worked in biochemistry and molecular biology labs for almost a decade. The laminar flow hood will actually increase the likelihood of contamination compared to just doing it on a table top. The laminar flow hood brings in air from the outside in and moving all that air on your things, where if you're doing it on a bench top then there is less airflow going around. That's why these hoods are meant for using chemicals that you don't want to inhale. In a real TC hood, there is an air curtain that is created so that no outside air can go inside. It is possible to be pretty sterile on a table top for this purpose, where if you keep your things closed as much as possible and your flame going and keeping it close to your work surface, and you open your things close to the flame. That flame kills off anything in the air that can contaminate your work so it creates a little sterile bubble.

      @prettyingreen  Před rokem +4

      Interesting! That makes sense. I’ve had little to no contamination with the hood. The air is double hepa filtered, but what you’re saying makes sense! Maybe I’ll just keep the fans off next time 😄

    • @Jenny-bc1lr
      @Jenny-bc1lr Před rokem +8

      @@prettyingreen yes we call that a "dead box" and allows blockage of air flow so it's a better suggestion then what I was saying above about not using a hood. I mainly wanted to mention it so people who start doing TC can do so without thinking they need a whole hood. It's very cool you have such a set up though.

    • @abigailfry1497
      @abigailfry1497 Před rokem +2

      In sterile compounding for pharmaceuticals, we use a hood but the airflow comes from the back of the hood (filtered to 2 microns) and flows outward to keep the airflow within the hood sterile.

    I find this subject fascinating. Thank you for showing this, actually slowed the video down so that I see what you were doing in more detail as it was a bit quick for my old brain lol. Looking forward to seeing what happens with the albo as well as the mint if that is what it turns out to be. I’ve grown several plants our from tissue culture so far with good results my newest one being a spiritus sancti which is doing really well 🤞🏽.

    I have been working TC of M albo for a while. Although I selected the good variegated nodes, however, I still have the issue that they provided just a few variegated TC plants while the green and the albo are the major populations.

    Can someone make a clear video on how to TC Monstera deliciosa? All I've seen with Monstera is stem culture but, on the other hand, I keep hearing that you can use any part of a plant for TC, so I'm quite confused. I'm looking to get into TC but if all you can do with Monstera is stem culture, I might as well propagate it by taking cuttings and not invest in high-tech equipment.

    Tissue culture seems like a waste since you can only basically propagate a spot that makes a new leaf in the jelly, why wouldn't you take those same precautions in your propagation substrate? If I'm correct all that really takes place is you basically just skipped the node and regrew the plant from the part that produces the leafe which in my eyes is just super complicated propagation? Correct me if I'm wrong? I applaud you for your dedication to the process which I'm sure was quite the feat in its own just to learn.
