  • This video addresses the difference between daily life with a Pouched Rat with whom you share a bond as opposed to one you don’t. Maybe you’ve taken one in later life or maybe you have one whose behaviour has changed. Hopefully here you will find some tips and assistance.

Really useful video, interesting to see how you approach a pouchy that’s not bonded. Thanks

They are both beautiful! Hatch is just a sweet guy, and so vocal. He seemed to have a lot to say when you went to take him out of the carrier. They are great.

Thank you for this. I am currently waiting for my first pouchy and this was very informative. Both Gus and Hatchy (sp?) are both beautiful boys x

Some good pointers there. Some will, even if they don't like you, will try to warn you with a nip prior to an actual bite (but not all!). I've managed to keep Khao's (non-neutered) out-bursts non-nuclear with training (lick and/or no "nibbles"=treat (combined with the word "Treat" so he knows what's approaching and how to respond), teeth with pressure= no treat and end of play). BUT he is bonded to me (though he has nipped me hard a couple of times thinking it was my good lady, his intended target).
The girls are still rather nervous of coming out of their cage so can be a bit antsy but I view it as a challenge (an attitude I would NOT recommend, extenuating circumstances here) and they're always safe. They're rescues but we've won them over :)
And Poppy? Well, she's just a dream and cuddle monster ;)
Nocturnal? Can you please explain that to Khaos!! Mind you, the two girls more than make up for that by cardboard shredding at 2am! :D

Hachi does not have a natural sleep pattern as he has been woken randomly in the day since a few weeks old. He will happily get up at any time.

Doesn't Gus have a lonely life like that?

It's a matter of choice on his part or to prevent too many babies(?). A lot of pouchies live on their own but female (I don't know with males) siblings will sometimes live together (plenty of arguments but when does that NOT happen with siblings?), my two girls do.

It is his choice. We have one female who he will accept into his space but she cannot live with him permanently for obvious reasons. They have had two litters together. Gus is naturally solitary as are many males. Females enjoy colony life but males can be nomadic in the wild.
