Anything from '72-'74. I have nothing against Mickey Hart but the band was better with one drummer. '72 was their peak with Keith coming in on keys. Some of the '74 shows were just rocket fuel from the first note to the last. Gimme some '74 Dead jams. Jack Straw, Eyes of the World, Playin' in the Band, Dark Star, oh baby!
Let it be known: when asked “What’s your favorite color?” (jokingly) in an interview with NME (UK), Jer replied “Red & black.” lol He had the most acerbic yet genuine sense of humor & I believe it comes thru in much of his playing & writing! Long love & long live Jerome John Garcia! 🤘✌️ “Let there be songs to fill the air”
This was my first Dead Show, summer of HS senior year! Drove up from NYC with my buddy in his dad's Lincoln Continental, Dylan and Petty played that day as well - just an AWESOME day! I remember that little tease at the top and the full opening riff like it was yesterday! Thanks for bringing it all back, and for your amazing breakdown! PEACE
Over the years this song just steadily grew on me. A few version I heard live, Garcias voice was pure painful emotion as he became the song. I know Garcia's voice was creaky sometimes, but I'll always love his singing regardless. Such emotional delivery, and the creaks and groans were so often, I'd even say typically, just perfect for the song and the context of the story. Emotion, pain, wins and losses, hope for redemption, so much more. Love Garcias signing always. RIP brother.
Thank you for this continued effort of analyzing these songs. I love the forum. I feel like part of a community of musicians when I watch your videos. It is obvious that we all love more than just the guitar. Hope you can continue to do what you are doing.
I saw a bunch of cold rain and snow performances back in the day, but missed this show as I already moved to Virginia and started going to more southern shows. This version is exemplary.
Highly recommend checking out "The Other One"! It's a Bobby tune, and it's one of their earlier songs. If you want an amazing live version with good quality video, I'd definitely go with "Grateful Dead - The Other One (Live 1974)". It's from the Winterland shows (which I consider among their best). It also showcases Jerry's more experimental playing, as well as some slide work. A lot of what you've listened to so far would be considered his more "reserved" playing -- not saying that's a bad thing, but Jerry has many faces that you haven't yet seen ;)
PS - the only reason the suggested video has so few views is because it's a reupload. Not sure what happened to the original, but I'm glad someone thought to share it again :)
That lead hasn't changed much since the boys recorded their first album. Altered the tempos a bit over the years, perhaps. A supercharged old Appalachian folk classic. much thx !

I really appreciate the way you recognize and talk about what each band member is doing, as well as what the band is doing as a whole. You're giving me info about ensemble playing that can apply to future bands I'm in. I'm glad that you're not focused only on the lead guitar. In a band setting, I'm either a rhythm guitar player or playing bass.
Jerry said they feed off the energy of the crowd, high or low energy in this case it was 4th of july and the crowd was very high energy. Sometimes you get a bad vibe crowd from cops harassment and the such..
I love Jerry Garcia and miss him every day. I was fortunate enough to hang with him several times in the '70s and '80s, especially when he was recuperating from his coma in Sebastopol, CA.. He was a special human being.

I enjoy your videos a lot . Great job!!! As a novice player who loves listening , it is nice to see someone break down the song structure while enjoying the genius of the song.
Trouble ahead, Jerry in Red. I always loved this tune, I first heard the superfast version from the debut album. The unison lead section was a tough nut for me to crack when I was starting out playing, nice to see you take it on.
One fun thing about this tune is watching Jerry use the pickup selector. They were doing harmony leads AND counterpoint since the late 1960's. Only we "early Dead Heads" were aware of their incredible compositional skills. It can be heard from the second album but is most apparent on all of their live albums. You can tell the difference between Jerry's and Bobby's tone. Eventually you will discover the interplay between Jerry, Bobby, and Phil. Bobby is the most skilled rhythm guitarist I have ever heard.
I think your understanding why so many people have followed them for so many years, all the different mixing of chords etc. It srikes a chord in your very soul!
Strong work on these vids! I was at that 7/4/86 show with my two brothers, girlfriend and others! Drove 9 hours from Mass in dad's Ford Country Squire Wagon : ) PLEASE keep these Dead Disections coming!!! Awesome!

Went to the Michigan ice fest last week with my buddy and started to tell him about your vids. He is not a guitar player but a huge dead head as am I. I got about three sentences in and he was aware of you and your great reaction to your discovery of Jerry and the boys. Thought that was great.
A week before before Jerry goes into diabetic coma. Was at show; played Cold Rain after mini front came through lowering temps dramatically. Dead opened for Dylan backed by Petty and Heartbreakers. Great day.
First time viewer. This is great work by you. And i ordered a prs from sweetwater last weekend, so I like the gear. I'll def be checking out more videos
3 min, the discussion of harmonics, Weir did so many colorful things that fit perfectly in fabric of each song. He was/is truly the most original rhythm player you can hear.
Man it's so cool that you're doing these and that we get to experience these with you. I've seen this vid many times but just 'talking' about the music is fun. SO, What's cool with that harmony run you're addressing is that particular melody really evolved over the years as the unit it is. Sometimes they would off set the lick to hang on the D for maybe a whole beat or two and make up for it on the E...etc. Really great stuff. You'll find all that cool neat stuff. Cheers. Oh also, decorations. You were describing Bobby's style and Brent...sometimes I think if it as decorating the tune. Cheers. I'll drop some good technical Bobby heavy links of GD in the future. Cheers again.
Can't get over...I lived through the Grateful Dead era & barely noticed them. What the hell was I doing/ thinking? The important thing is " getting it" eventually & now I feel I am ready.
Your tone sounds awesome . Jerry's tone was amazing, besides the Mutron, he didn't use many effects. His tone came right from his soul. Great video bredren!! NFA
I was at this show...this was pretty magic...it was broiling hot before the show...lots of people baking in the hot hot sun...the first set was kind of a little slow and flat but when they came out for the second set opener Cold Rain suddenly the breeze kicked up and there was even a little bit of sprinkle to break the heat, the kind of magic that happened at Dead shows all the time..so cool seeing you take apart these classic jams
Please never stop doing these ik they dont get crazy view but im a dead head and a musician and these videos really open up pandorss box for me thank you sm

I love it bro! Ur dead fam now for sure!!! Only a dead head smiles like that watching the boys play. When u hear the music playing u get “it” That feeling only dead heads get.
This vid immediately made me smile. I know exactly what you’re talking about when the stars align and your amp is warmed up just right and reacting to your guitar playing perfectly. I’ve been fortunate enough to play a good amount of large stages with huge side fills and monitors in my musical career, and when the onstage sound is on point and goes with that perfect guitar sound and amp reaction, there’s nothing in the world like it. I’m actually getting goosebumps just thinking about it. Love The Dead, and miss Jerry and his playing very much, but was able to meet him very briefly about a year or so before his passing. At least we’ve got countless recordings of his work. Great vid! Thanks so much. 🎶👍🔊🙂
Playing outside was frequently a mixed bag, especially when you're not in the "big time". The sound goes everywhere. If it's hot, your hands sweat and the wind dries the sweat, making the strings "scratchy". If it's chilly, then the wind can make your hands pretty cold.
Michael, you might not be aware of this, but Cold Rain & Snow is a tune that goes WAY back in the GD rep. They started playing it in 1966 (maybe earlier), and it was played regularly (5-12 times/year) all through their active years. Sometimes the show opener, usually in the first set. This one is unusual because it opened the 2nd set. It might have been in the Jug Band repertoire too. (Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, the band which preceded The Grateful Dead) As you noted, it is a regularly played Bluegrass tune, so Jerry likely would have played it during his banjo years as well.
One of the best Grateful Dead cover bands of all time is Further. And their cover of this song from the music Festival Lockn’ 2013 is my favorite version of the song ever played.
Thanks for your perspective on this song, this is a other example of how the Grateful Dead's playing still inspires so many, now you getting the fever, like Bobby says , too much of everything is just enough ! In my opinion you should go through the Dead's entire list of them playing on video and give the world a gift . The music theory you use to explain what the band does reinforces, my personal conviction that they were the best American band in rock history, I knew it the first time I heard them live. My bad for never learning music theory to fully understanding what my ears were hearing. Really wanted you to check out the Farm Aid concert of 7/4/1986. Much better camera work all around. Your so right about how well the tube amps sound that day, they have several clips of the band playing , and Jerry,Phil and Bobby are delighted with the sound. So throw around the idea of nothing but Dead videos on your channel and I don't know if you have the time to cover them all, Make your mark with Dead fans. I read the comments on all the shows you've covered and those who love the band are so thankful for what you've done already. I will be waiting to find out what you think about this dream of mine? Without love in the dream, it will never come true. Best wishes my brother, thank you .⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️🎸
U REALLY KNOW YOUR SHIT!!!!! I have always loved this DEAD tune.. I am a drummer, and the DRUMS .. are really rocking on this version... some HIGH ENERGY .... Jerry was having FUN.... 4 sure..
I play this with a bluegrass band....famously recorded by Del McCoury.....great rendition and harkens back to Jerry Garcia's days as a banjo player with "Old and In the Way".....
Jerry was actually playing Cold Rain & Snow, (and Banjo), well before his Old & In The Way days. OAITW was '73. Jerry was playing Bluegrass & Banjo over 10 years before that. e.g. The Hart Valley Drifters in '63.

Yes!
There are at least one hundred mind blowing versions of The Other One. Arguably, the most intense piece they ever did.
The Morning Dew is spectacular. Jerry plays the solo like a surgeon mixed with a creative genius mixed with a soul of a very unique and special man.

Cold Rain and Snow at the Buffalo show you had that Smokin Deal on was awesome also...
"this camera guy needs togo get himself a beer and get himself together"
Best wishes my brother, thank you .⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️🎸
Thanks for doing these videos! I got goosebumps all up and down my arms the instant this great song started. 2:08
I thought my birthday was a couple of weeks ago, and never thought you would do this one!
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels.
Thank you broooooo
later on when vince came in on keys he would do alot of jerrys licks so jerry was able to do his oboe and woodwinds
U REALLY KNOW YOUR SHIT!!!!! I have always loved this DEAD tune.. I am a drummer, and the DRUMS .. are really
rocking on this version... some HIGH ENERGY ....
