  • We were hoping that the Behringer MS-1 Mark 2 would fix some of the things that they got wrong when they released the original SH-101 clone. Sadly, it's still not very good.

If you enable GLIDE for all steps then it works. You can turn off glide globally with the Glide Switch. You can enable Glide with the Glide Switch for those steps that has Glide set ON. The Glide potmeter sets the glide speed fine.

This synth really seems to be their red-headed stepchild. My MKI that I bought a few months back had a yucky noise issue, so I've just recently got around to sending it back in for a warranty claim. Shop should be sending me a MK2 soon to replace it. Hopefully, it's at least functioning as intended.
I'd like to take a moment though to look on the bright side. I really like this synth anyway despite the flaws and neglect. Another silver lining is that with the MK2 they got rid of that fugly Bender. That orange light was so uncomplimentary to the Red model.
My primary rationale for getting it in the first place is that it's a keytar.

Here only the voice is analog, everything else is digital. They could have changed the behavior using different programming to mask this fact, but they left it pretty obvious what is a digital vs analog control. I personally don't mind the way it is. Most behringer stuff was designed for digital control even when the original unit wasn't. For instance all their keyboards are digital or midi interface instead of analog.

It's quite simple, they just replaced the 8049 CPU with a more modern ST32. That's all really. Not much more digital than the SH101. The CPU controls the keyboard scanning, the arpegiator and the sequencer and the random noise and stuff.
The sequencer stores glide parameter and replays it as is. The arpegiator aught to do glide though according to the switch I believe.
The behringer release note say something weird about "dual glide" implemented. Maybe they just mean Auto & On.
THose things can be corrected in firmware as it's not in the analogue circuit. On SH101 those are also controlled by the CPU.

@herberdth if that's the case, they should be able to fix most of the issues mentioned. I understand the frustration however that in a product called 'Mk2' such issues weren't addressed upfront.

I think you have to set the glide values for each note of your sequence before you save it. In the video your glide knob is at 0 while you’re recording the sequence, so I’m wondering if that’s why you’re not hearing any glide during playback.

    • @legionhwp
      @legionhwp Před 29 dny

I don't think so . On the sh101 you add slides in the sequence but regardless the knob should absolutely change the amount of portamento when turned even if there are no slides. The demo shows no change when the arp and basic sequence playing. On a sh101 it slides all over the place and the knob changes the amount in realtime when set to On regardless of any programming.

OK I have the mk1 and I enjoy it, but I didn’t know it had all these issues. Since I can’t afford an original SH-101, should I consider the VST that Roland has? Does that plugin have the same problems? If you’re not a plugin guy I understand. Anyway, thanks for a great video.

The Roland SH01a boutique hardware synth gets the auto and On portamento functions 100% right. That's virtual analog (but sounds great imo) so I would guess their VST also got it right.

Regarding the filter, that's some pretty rough nonlinear behavior. That's what I'd expect from a cheap ladder filter, the volume of the signal does affect the resonant cutoff in nonlinear filters but usually not by much unless driven super hard

yep, the Glide was the main reason I sold my MS 1 again, even I liked the sound basically, but I think have enough other stuff I can do most sounds somehow..
I hoped also they would fix this in MK II, but already heard its not, I will not buy.
I have many other Behringer synths, and I am basically happy with it, really cool stuff. But some things sometimes are annoying. But for being fair, also other companies did such shit. sell unfinished gear. Had a lot of experiance in such things, wich costs me also a lot of money, finally the few 300 of this was not a big loss, i sold it for 200 again. I have lost more money with other stuff like the Alesis Andromeda wich had buggy firmware, no fixing at all after years. And many others as well.
So thats just like it is since decades. There are many times some hairs in the soup, the perfect synth anyway not exists I think. BUT and a big but, I think the ASM Hydrasynth is for me kind of a perfect synth in ( almost ) every case.
