What toolmaker down on the bottom said. They didnt build many 340 cars so they were unusual. Box stock 68-70 no/low optioned Dart GTS/Swingers with a 4spd,3:91 gears, are the cars that gave the 340 its nasty reputation. They had a killer power to weight ratio and could tangle with the average Hemi or 440 6pak B body. 340 Duster& Demons were strong to and Cudas werent to shabby, but they were all a hair off the pace of them Darts. It was ALWAYS comical to watch peoples reactions when a 340 car rolled up to a Saturday night street grudge match. It was cute and funny until it started waxing everyones a$$.

340's were quick but Hemi's and 440 6 bbl cars ran 11's with traction and carb tuning..440 4bbl solid upper 12's,383's low 13's and 340's with carb tuning threy ran low 13's..12's with headers, better traction etc..
I was there when they were new and knew people with 68-73 340 cars the 71 older were quicker as no government smog regulations hit them yet..
dad owned a 70 440 6bbl Cuda brand new,2 weeks after jetting the carbs it ran high 11's with 440 6bbl,727 and 3.54 gears..He still has the car today,80 plus year old man in a like new 200,000 mile plus Cuda !
I bought the lowest mileage 68 Charger RT in 1972 54,000 miles ! Some were 90,000 miles yes in 1972 as 5 digit odometer 99,999 they roll to 00,000 !! The 68 had a 440 magnum,727,3.23 gears I ran high 12's once I changed the bias ply 185 wide (yes 185 75 series white wall on magnum wheels all original) To 205 60 series 14 on magnum rims... By 1976 I added pro tracs bias ply 275 wide, traction bars and carb jetting/swap and headers ran 12.60's...These were tested new running 13.60 - 13.80 with 185 70 series good year bias ply tires with no 1st gear traction with auto or manual...
My buddy had a 68 340 Barracuda 340,3.91,auto after a carb swap, headers he ran 12.90's...Another buddy ahd a 340 Cuda ran 13.40's but he had 3.54's same thing carb swap,headers..71 Demon 340 4 speed 3.91 ran 13.30's stock out of the factory car was new !!
340's were quick but 383,440 and 426 Hemi's would eat them up..Unless 4.56 gear in the 340 car then 1/8 th mile the 340 ahead then the Hemi always ripped by even 440's..These were when cars were new and stock heads, stock cams at most tires, traction bars and carb jetting or swap..No engine work as cars had factory warranty still..So we only changed carbs (if we blew the engine we could swap the carb in 10 minutes and car was stock)..Nobody blew up a Mopar..
340's would beat up any 390 Ford and 396 Chevy...The 375 version of the 396 was about the same..
In 1978 I bought a 90,000 mile original like new 340 Cuda, auto ,3.23 gears and ran mid 13's with bias ply tires all stock..I still have my 68 Charger RT today restored and 500,000 miles as I drove it daily until early 1990's then full resto..My 340 Cuda is now a 440 6 barrel with 180,000 miles...I loved the hell out of my 68 and drove it to/from work 120 miles per day ,usually 3 times per week ! I am a collector today and worked at a dealer since 1977 ! I bought many 440's,Hemi cars,383,400,413,340,360 etc...
Also 360's are also hot..Buddy ran 13.98 in his 74 360 Cuda ,same a a 1973 400 p code Satellite back when they were new...Old road tests they just burnt rubber and missed 1st gear powerband, like most people at the strip today cant drive an old car..They cant get them to hook.Or rebuild the engine wrong and slower than when new lol...

@@01trsmar Those are some great memories. I've always wanted a 340 a body but I can't afford one or even a 340 engine these days. I will probably just end up building a 360 as it fits my budget better. I've seen some that run quite well.
I wasn't around in the good era of performance but dad told me a lot about it. Dad owned a light yellow '68 road runner with a 383 in those days. His buddies were all about Mopar as well. One of them ordered a brand new 1970 Duster 340 in the B5 blue with blue bench seat interior and auto on column. That car was a sleeper and ate more 396's along with too many others to recall. His other buddy had a 1968 Dart GTS 383 in that common light green metallic. It was also one of those...what just happened cars??
I think the 383 is underrrated. Seems like they are always overlooked compared to 340 or 440....or Hemi of course. There wasn't enough Hemi's the area to mention though. One of the only ones in the area was in a '66 Coronet that used for one thing...running moonshine.

I worked with a guy who later joined the police force in my home town. By '72, everybody's horsepower had diminished somewhat. But Duster and Demons w/340's would still surprise you. My friend had '72 Duster 340, torqueflite, 3:58 gear, sure-grip. Nothing unique there, a number of them in town. We were leaving work on a Friday evening. He was going through a sleepy intersection near the shop, and he turned that 340-Thermo-Quad loose! I had a whole new respect for 340's afterwards. All the stuff we had to do to our cars? Chrysler already did all of that to the 340. Aces!

My first car was a ‘70 340 Duster, original FM3 car, likely the highest optioned of the 7-13 that were built. I wasn’t aware of how rare it was at the time, sold it for $750 I think, it was cheap whatever it was. It’s still unrestored, hasn’t run since before I bought it in the early 90’s, and has been for sale for an astronomical amount for the last 20 years somewhere in TN. 😢

You should read into the 318 Poly. It's crazy they didn't continue that design of small block. Way better head design. I read that Hemi engineers got with the marketing guys and spun it to the bosses of Chrysler that it was a Small block that directly competed with the 426 Hemi. If you look at a poly combustion chamber side by side with a Ford Boss 429 they hard to tell them apart. Plymouth produced the poly in 1955 ford didn't produce the boss 429 untill 1969.

Awesome car eh! What have you done to it performance wise? Or is it close to stock? Man this video brings back some good old memories... Thanks for sharing it.
I have a 340 Duster also. :) It started out as a 318 car but I put in a 340, 1973 block from a Cuda with the big valve 1969 X heads in it.
I used to race it on the street back in the late 1980's.
Unfortunately I never had a chance to race it on the quarter mile.
It was pretty fast though , I had a friend stop watch me 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds (in second gear).
Started restoring it in 1989 but it never got finished. I put oil down the carb and all the cylinders. its been sitting in my garage since 1990.
I rebuilt the 340 myself way back in the day, bored it out 20 thousand with new high compression ratio pistons and a purple cam camshaft, new Direct Connection lifters, push rods, timing chain, sprockets, an aluminum Edelbrock intake, port and polished heads and intake matched gaskets, a 4 barrel spread bore Holley 650 carb. Also a Direct Connection chrome performance ignition box and a Accel supercoil too.
It used to be a automatic (a Fireball reverse shift 3 speed) But I put in a 4 speed manual with a new clutch and an original Hurst pistol grip shifter. Changed the rear differential from a highway gear 2.75 to an 8 and 3/4 391 limited slip. The only thing that would stop it was a gas station LOL!
Do you still have and race your car?

ive seen several of these cars run at the local bracket races and man when they are tuned right they sound awesome in the burnout box. lots of old school street racers say that back in the 70,s a well tuned 340 duster could put a whooping on a hemi car if that guy didnt have his shit together!

    • @01trsmar
      @01trsmar Před 5 lety

      My Dad/Uncles were the old school racers..Owned new Hemi and 440 6bbl cars...I bought a 68 Charger RT 440 in 1972 lowest mileage on 54,000 miles !
Hemi's with some traction and headers ran mid to low 11's Dads 440 6bbl ran high 11's stock cams.stock heads..Only carbs jetted/changed and headers at some point..Dad has his 70 440 6bbl Cuda today and ran high 11's when 2 weeks old ! Remember bias ply tires,no track prep like today..A good driver with a tuned Hemi or 440 could knock 1-2 seconds off the 1/4 mile when these cars were new..340's ran high 12's with low gears and low 13's with headers/carb jetting..
If a Hemi sleeps a 318 will beat them...340's were tough stock form and with carbs and headers but couldnt come close to a Hemi or 440..I loved my 340 in my 71 Cuda but like any Mopar even a 318 you can make them run like hell as time went on better mods and technology helped make these run like hell ! Our club has a stock looking Dart with a 340 that runs 10's...A 318 stroker 390 or so runs low 12's in a Duster both Dart/Duster are street driven and daily drivers on nice days for these guys !
I Love all Mopars small blocks and Big Blocks and modern Hemi Mopars even 80's turbo 4 cyl Mopars could run high 12's with better turbo's more boost ,head job !

    • @peteshea8010
      @peteshea8010 Před 4 lety

14.42 @ 94 is pretty much right on the mark for a proaction line stock 340 Duster, though some trapped in the 96 MPH range.
The example in this video has been heavily modified. One thing I hate about videos like this is that no modifications are mentioned. Naive people then view the videos and assume the results are representative of production line stock examples.
Little known fact: The strongest running 340 was the 1968 4 speed manual variant. It was fitted with a one year only specific cam grind that yielded more power than all other variants. It's possible that the 340 6 packs mad as much power due to their superior carbonation and intake, though even those lacked the camshaft I just referred to.
That engine would produce something in the order of 260 SAE Net HP (engine in its fully installed state, with all engine accessories, air cleaner and element and full factory exhaust in place).
That is very serious output for a 100% production line stock old school small block. And notably, it used a hydraulic cam!
The "350 HP" (Gross) 350 Chevy actually made a but less power in the same SAE Net state, with the "370 HP" 350 LT1 only making perhaps 10 more.
The pre 1971 340s were among the very best performance street engines of the era. They could put away the majority of the big block cars (e.g, base engine GTO and Olds 442 400s) with room to spare.

So the engine was a transplant, right? The last car with a 340 in it rolled off the line in 1973.
I have a 72 340 block in the garage with a spun #4 main. Looks like it only went around once though. Bought it for 500 bucks off e-bay even with the spun main. Why? 2 reasons. 340 blocks are made out of unobtanium (meaning you can't find them) and the second reason is it was still @ the standard bore of 4.040. I'm guessing the spun main is why it's still at that bore. I have a fully forged rotating assy with bushed mopar rods, an original 340 crank and .030 over 10 -1 forged pistons. Also have non-smog J-heads with 1.88 intake seats. Have 2.02 stainless whirl polished valves for it as well which will need the heads machined to fit and probably a bowl blend and minor porting. Just need a cam kit, gaskets and very expensive machine work. The car it's going into is a 68 A-body barracuda notch-back which currently has a 318 in it with a performer manifold and an 850 CFM Thermoquad carb. Plan is to keep the TQ and manifold. Future Camshaft plan is a comp XE275HL. Expected HP = 425+ gross at flywheel from the 340 and there's a nearly identical 318 build with 415HP that backs up that estimate.

Always liked a Duster. Great car's. Also. Always though it was funny putting so much emphasis on fractions of a second concerning car performance. To me. If I like the car. It goes fast enough to be right there with the rest of the pack. Is just about as reliable. Then... it's another great car.

The entire car is modified, most notably the engine (and heavily so). Trap speed is nearly 20 MPH faster than what the original road tests got back in the day, realizing that variables such a gearing and off the line traction have minimal impact on trap speed.
More specially, that trap speed indicates something on the order of 420 "as installed" HP for a car of this weight, per Patrick Hale's tried and true formula. Production line stock examples made 257 "as installed" (SAE Net) HP, per former CAR AND DRIVER editor in chief, MIT engineering grad and Ford powertrain engineer Csaba Csere.

I worked for C-P for a number of years, and yes, you are correct, the Challenger T/A had that package. The boss's son had a Challenger Rallye. I had to explain to the young man what a "Slap-Stick" shifter was about. That car only had a 7&1/4 rear differential, which he broke that weekend. He of course ratted me out to his dad as his "teacher". Dad was not amused. I suggested an 8:3/4
