    I just fired up my 76 xlch after it sat in my shed for the last 10 yrs about a month ago. Only took about 5 kicks and it came to life! What a sweet sound they make!

    Sounds good! I had a 1980 Sportster, sat 2 years , when I went overseas 2 years. Changed the Battery, cleaned the Mikuni carb. It fired right up! Good job on this!

    had a 79 sportster years ago. kind of a bastard year. master cylinder in the way of rear pipe.mine was a rat . when i tore it down for top end rebuild, had a 60 over piston in front and a 30 over in the rear. got it running pretty good. went to a 60 pan after it. shovel top end. ah the good old days! getting older now. cant get rid of the harley bug. keeps me up at night. just finished a UL build. only cause i never had a flathead. good luck on your projects and ride safe

      Hey Dave, yeah the 79 has a few quirks to them that are alittle different. I've seen all kinds of funky stuff over the years. I mainly stick with Ironheads and Shovelheads but have a buddy with a flathead that's given me an itch for one of those too. Thanks for watching buddy and I appreciate your comment!

    I had a79 in 80 - it's the bastard year - almost no aftermarket parts fit. The battery is too small, and the electrinic regulator sucked too. After fixing those things, it did work ok, but the 57 - 78 frames were better. If you bought it right, you'll have fun on it but thefy are hard to sell. Have fun !

    • @jfrost77hd
      @jfrost77hd  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah they've had that reputation, the 1 year sprocket cover and brake linkage is the big quirk. With the 80 cover and linkage it gives you alittle more flexibility. I agree there's a lot more 57-78 stuff for sure and typically what I look for in bikes. I still own this bike and a few more 79's since, I've kinda got soft spot for all Ironheads unfortunately, lol. Thanks for watching!

    Ironheads catch a lot of hate, but I've always liked them. My father in law inherited an 83 Ironhead from a friend that passed about 10 years ago. His widow actually let it sit for about 8 years before she gave it to him. That bike has seen a lot if miles.

    Nice Job, she's a beauty. I recently bought a 79 Roadster I've reading and cruising the internet for info. In my searching I discovered that 2 front disc brakes are only on the 79 Roadster, not Sportster. There's other differences also, 2 inch longer front fork, no kick start option and a few other things I can't remember, so congrat's, you have a rarer bird than you thought. Been doing some stuff on mine and wouldn't mind comparing notes in the future.

    I had a 75 xlh iron head for 20 years. best bike I ever owned. Times got tough I sold it for $1500 IT was bored 20 over and head shaved .10. S&S super B carb and stripped down to nothing but a head and tail light. Never let me down . Wouldnt charge the battery so I carried a charger with me. Drove her home with only 1st gear for 50 miles at night. Felt like I was sitting on a volcano.

      @@jfrost77hd Yeah I've seen a few ways like diesel fuel and a handful of bolts and shake the hell out of it. Like you said a piece of chain. A pressure washer you got to be careful with that though certainly wouldn't want to blow a hole in the tank and then dry it out. A few shot's of methyl hydrate work.

    Sweet. I know the anxious feeling of the first fire up. At least you didn't have to kick this one to life.

      I paced around the garage for a few before hand, it's one of them "well this is either going to be good or possibly really expensive" kinda moments. There's always surprises but so far so good, thanks for watching!

      I like this statement, funny but true, "possibly really expensive". But sounds like you did all the right pre-start stuff on an unknown bike and were ready to kill the starter solenoid. I wouldn't have thought of this one. Great vids. Keep em coming.

      Jack Price Figures since I emphasized the solenoid sticking figures it wouldn't happen, but it's one of those things that you only need to happen once to remember. I've seen it more times then not with something sitting this long so was ready. Thanks for watching!

    Just found this video, watched alot of your others. Good stuff man! Heard you say you are just north of Dayton, I'm in Middletown. Would love to see the stuff you have and pick your brain about my 1988 XLH! If you dont mind, join "Ohio Sportsters" on FB. Small group of us all thirsty for your knowledge! Great looking bike by the way! Take care

      Hey thanks Mike, yes I'm just north of Dayton but about to move an hour further north. I really only mess with 85-earlier bikes so not much help on your 88 unfortunately. I don't do FB either but sure a great group of you there. I appreciate you watching the videos 👍

      Yeah I was real surprised, I cleaned the carb but set it back to where it was and never even had to adjust the idle. She's a runner!
