- My whole life I have been living the lie that Privacy Codes and Privacy Tones (aka CTCSS, DTC, DCS) tones and codes on GMRS and ham radio are NOT private! But thanks to the The Internet, I have learned the folly of my ways! In this video I explain how Privacy Tones and Privacy Codes on ham radio and GMRS radios ARE actually private.

last radios i fooled with was over 40 years ago.......stumbled upon Randy's videos purely by accident about 2 weeks ago. I wasn't even thinking about radios. So entertaining i just kept watching him.......and, once again, the radio bug flew up one nostril and imbedded in my brain. Ordered 3 GMRS radios......applied for license.....received it yesterday, WRW5595
Not all hams are sad, you could be a happy ham!
To our credit not all or even most hams are sad. And trash seems to stick together so they tend to get on a repeater and be an echo chamber leaving decent hams to carry right on

I look at privacy tones on radios as more of a filter... I can hear those who have the same tone configured for the frequency/channel (my friends, family [FRS] or fellow operators[GMRS or Amateur]) but I am filtering out all the other noise on the frequency/channel.

Might I suggest you making a series on CB radio frequencies if you're interested? It's an unlicensed spectrum now days. Us wildcatters play a lot with it.

Basically, the same as a tone for a repeater, they can hear you, but you can't hear them unless they have that same code. But not private unless you count them not being able to talk to you as private.😁
