@@GoodOptometryMorning I am 80 got my cataract done 3 weeks ago. I usually get very concerned about anything regarding health matters , but on this occasion I was not excited or worried in the least , during surgery I experienced some pain on 3 occasions , and after I went home my eye was painful until I took 2 pain killers , the good part 1, I would not hesitate to under go this operation again , 2 my vision was crystal clear the minute I got off the operating table, 3 in the day after the operation I had no pain whatsoever just a little discomfort at times 4 I regret not having it done 4 years previously , the only thing you require to consider is that the nhs procedure only corrects the lens problem , so they are only prepared to pay for that, where on the private side if you pay up to £3,750 an eye they have a big range of lenses to chose from & have the ability to fine tune your requirements where you may not require to wear glasses ,

My cataracts are not to the point where I’m in need of the surgery, but I do have the issue with ghosting that you mentioned. You are the first one on CZcams to specifically address this symptom. I just subscribed.

I was unsure as to whether I had cataracts or not, that is, until I saw this video. As a result, I've just made an appointment with my optometrist to discuss my options. Many thanks for this great informative video Michael.
Was nodding my head more and more through your explanation! Thank you. I’m about to have my left eye cataract removal, and have virtually all these symptoms.
Thank you so very much for an EXCELLENT explanation of cataracts! I really needed this bc I’ve gradually noticed those exact changes in my vision! Especially concerning colors! I spend lots of time painting landscapes and making colorful beaded jewelry and now I know why I’m losing the ability to see colors with the vibrancy and saturation that I used to. My husband has made comments about some of my paintings telling me that the sky, flowers, or grasses I had painted during a Plein Air painting session were more muted and less vibrant than they actually were. That also explains why I need little flash lights all over the house! And I’ve experienced other symptoms you’ve mentioned and thanks to you, now I know what’s going on with my eyes! I’m so grateful to you!❤
Thank you ! Finally someone that talks the talk in a way that "we the people" can understand. I was told that I have a very weird type of cataract. my right eye cataract extends from right to left, and the cataract on my left eye extends left to right. Between the two, I have one full eye. However, the cataract on my right eye seems to be growing by the second. Yes, I totally suffer from most of the systoms you mention. Sad but true. I'm totally scared to have surgery. I've heard horror stories! I hope you address laser vs manual surgery. I'll check. Thank you for a GREAT video!
Excellent information! I had my left eye done earlier this year and I'll be having the right one done soon. I've worn glasses for myopia since I was about 8 and I'm now 73 - and the result in my left eye was astonishing - life-changing even. I went from -6.25 to 'eagle-eyed' - my logmar score since the op. is around 0.22 to 0.23, which is fantastic. Brilliant work that you do.
Excellent, efficient video. You sound so casual yet clearly knowledgeable at the same time. I’m relieved that to know what I’m experiencing might be due to my developing cataracts. I feel like I can relax for the couple of weeks it might take before I can get my eyes checked
Great video! I suffer from ALL of these cataracts symptoms. I’m 52 and had bilateral vitrectomies 30 years ago. Hmm…best look for a doc to fix this! Thank you!
I have been having trouble with my vision and as I am a diabetic, I saw my Optometrist last week and was diagnosed with cataracts. No explanation was given of what cataracts were just that I needed surgery to fix it and a prescription for eyeglasses for my worsening astigmatism was given. I told her that let me think on it. So, I was given a follow-up appointment in 6 months, I thank you for the clear and precise explanation about cataracts. I can make an intelligent decision now about my eyes. FYI: she said that my diabetes had not affected my eyes.
Wonderful!. Thank you. This is the information I was looking for before and after my cataract surgery this summer. Could you make a similar video about astigmatism symptoms & signs?
I went to look for information on the symptoms of cataracts, and Ifound much of this very descriptuve, but in a very helpful way.. Unfortunately, in trying to find out what was going on with my own eyesight, it took the response of several friends and acquaintances who have had cataracts, who seemed to say similar things which matched my own experience so far. I saw none of this mentioned in this video. The most profound comment made was seeing a grayish shadow in the affected eye. It blocked the center of vision. It seemed each person had a different size or area size which was affected, sometimes the shadow is larger, sometimes smaller. Mine is centered right in the middle of my vision In the left eye. It also appears, no matter the size, they also stated seeing what appears to be lightning or swirling lights on the edges, and sometimes right in the middle of this gray shadow. Once they went to see their ophthalmologists, they were diagnosed with cataracts. While I've learned both eyes could be affected, currently it is only what I see in my left eye, and like others they had it in one eye first, and eventually had to have the other replaced (lens). I am thankful there is a remedy. The cataract, while in one eye, affects my overall vision. After all, we are two-eyed creatures. 😉 Thank you for allowing me to share this.
I was just told I have a cataract in my right eye. It snuck up on us because the tiny one in my left eye is still tiny lol. So now I am facing this surgery and I'm scared to death.
Thank you for a great video! I am going in for my first eye this week and the second eye a week afterward. I am in my 70s and have been soaking up as much information that I can find. Yours is a valuable addition to what I have learned so far. Still scared, but looking forward to better vision. They found my cataracts 15+ years ago, but I didn't know how much they affected my vision until I went for an exam and new glasses recently. I made the decision many yrs ago, so I went in for a consultation immediately.
Excellent presentation! I am contemplating having cataract extraction soon, but I am not having any of those symptoms mentioned, except for the the vision test. My Dr. Tells me I have cataract and should have the surgery. I do not wear glasses to read, or drive. I do have dry eyes. Excessive tearing. Other than that I am fine with my vision. Thank you you so much for all that information. Wonderful !
@@GoodOptometryMorning : I had a wonderful experience. I wish everyone to have my experience. My doctor was a rock star 2 times so far. Hi Doc, i will be needing lens replacement fairly soon. I know multi-focal lenses are much more expensive, but would they allow me to see well at all distances without ever needing glasses again?
63 and mine went from moderate to dense in 10 months. (Just had one done and the other in a few weeks). I was originally told by optometrist that they couldn't prescribe glasses anymore. I currently have one eye where my car is white and through the other it is cream colored.
I have blurrs vision because of a double astigmatism one in botb eyes. Then an eye doctor told me i have a cataract on each eye. Actually light still hurts my eyes
When I was in third grade, I could see blades of grass on a moonless night. Some artificial light. The last time I drove home at night in the rain was a nightmare. I couldn't see the lines on the road with the oncoming lights, and it was a curved road. 30 mile drive. I swore I would never drive in the rain at night again. But shortly thereafter, my 36 year old car gave up and I declined to fix it. Sometimes I take a taxi at night, and I don't know how the driver can see. I don't like driving anyway. I think the speed limit should be 30. I'm not 70 yet, but this has been going on for years. But now lightng appears a notch lower.
I also was told I had narrow angle glaucoma, said I needed the laser surgery, which I did. Also found out I have cataracts. Now they want me to have cataract surgery for both eyes. I don’t know what to do. I feel like they didn’t tell me everything upfront, when I first went in. Why?
@@bonniegierach5027 if you have narrow angle it moves quickly. Have the surgery. In 5 months I have vision lose in my right eye and left… Ur GS should get you in right away for laser surgery. It’s no big deal it takes minutes. I drove myself to both. But I’m still on latanoprost at night. Only once a day drops.
What is good experience in terms of years, for a cataract surgeon? One, two, five, etc. And is a training situation ok for this or should an established practitioner be called upon?
I find oncoming car headlights really bright, does not seem scattered, blurred or as such, but they look powerfully bright. Does scattered light cause the effect to make it seem as if headlights are powerful? If so, how does scattered light create the illusion of lights just seeming brighter? Hope you understand what I am trying to ask…
I understand what you’re saying. I wonder if it’s just that newer vehicles have different types of headlights? I’ve never liked driving in the dark, but it seems to be worse now. I’m 65 so have just been attributing the change to age, newer headlights, and my old car’s foggy lens cover.
@@heidimeigs5192 Good point. I’ve just turned 66. And I also can’t cope with night driving like I use to. Mainly because of opposing vehicles head lights. Perhaps that’s normal at our age. Optometrist said I’ve got slight cataracts in both eyes and he said surgery will give me only a marginal difference. But I feel a marginalised difference will still be a big difference. Cheers NZ.
A hint for optometrists: if you have a patient on your "will call" list, do not send that patient a text message. No way a cataeacrive patient can read #6 black font on a white screen. If you send a text message, send it to a friend if the patient who can read it. A hint for patients: get on a "will call" list to get an appointment if someone cancels. Call the office every two or three days to ask where you are on the will call list. I got on the list, got examined and got a surgery appointment in two weeks this way. A friend got an appointment to get examined in November by not doing this.
I am 82 years old and was diagnosed about 5 years ago with the beginnings of cataract in one eye. Recently I returned to the ophthalmologist about improving my glasses. Apparently the issue was my cataract getting worse and in the other eye also. I have a couple questions that I hope someone with the right info can answer: I still see well enough to drive regularly and read etc. but I wonder at what point do I move to have cataract surgery? Also, I have felt a granular feeling in one eye occasionally for 3 months, is that related to the cataract? I have been using castor oil around that eye, is that just coincidental?
Good information. I was told at my last eyeglass exam that I had cataracts forming. Now to me it seems that I’m looking through a fog, like on a foggy morning! Sort of hazy. I’m thinking that I need to get something but still hesitant. Thanks for the code. New sub.
@@GoodOptometryMorning can I have cataract surgery with just numbing drops that numb the eyeball with no needles or sedation? I had one done with no sedation ( my request not the advice of the doctor) but only two needles injected behind the eyeball to numb it. I could hear everything and even see the water, lights…etc.I did fine that was two years ago and now the other one may be a year off.
So my opthomologist did cataract surgery on my eyes 2 years ago. I'm now wondering if I even needed it. Did not have the symptoms except dry eyes & glare at night. Neither of these changed after surgery. I was told I had uveitis before the cateracts therefore 3-4 injections in each eye BEFORE he said cataracts. I still have sarcoid uveitis & he says my vision will not get any better. It's extremely frustrating & depressing.
Serious question: why don’t ophthalmologists perform lens change during vitrectomy surgery? It’s almost guaranteed that vitrectomy surgery speeds up the cataract formation. I went through vitrectomy surgery in January, and cataract surgery 9 months later for a dense cataract. The cataract surgery was 100 times more painful than the vitrectomy surgery. Make it make sense…..
Hi Doctor, Very nice explanation, Thank you so much. Doctor My right eye is blind due to Glaucoma. My left eys is having cataract, but my vision is very good. So the doctors are reluctant to go for surgery because the vision is good. I fear that if the cataract becomes matured, it cannot be operated. Is this right. please advice me doctor. Thanks
SYMPTOMS RELATED TO CATARACT: 1. Blurred vision 2. Harder to see things on dim light or in the night 3. Change in glasses prescription 4. Change in the perception of colours 5. More sensitive to glare 6. Doubling / overlapping of the image 7. Loss of contrast SYMPTOMS NOT RELATED TO CATARACT: 1. Spots in your vision 2. Pain (in the eyes) 3. Flim developing on surface of the eye 4. Fluctuating vision
Such a great video! Thank you so much for providing such important information. You effectively summarized and explained symptoms related to cataract. I’ve had double vision for some time now. I’m extremely near sighted and when I had my eyes checked, I was told I had developed cataract in my right eye, but it’s not bad enough to have a surgery. I was sent to see a neuro-ophthalmologist who made me to wear a temporary prism on the right lens of my glasses. Then in the recent weeks, I have started to feel my right lens is cloudy or foggy, as if there were some steam. Also I feel something got in my right eye and I keep rubbing it to do away that. I also see halo around traffic lights or street lights, etc. I don’t know if all of these have to do with the effect of the prism or the fact that the cataract in my right eye is getting worse. But the cataract surgeon says I should wait to do the surgery and get my double vision corrected first by getting a paire of prism glasses first. Btw, I also have astigmatism. Your video makes me think I should deal with the cataract first. So should I go get cataract surgery first or get prism glasses first which are very expensive. I hope you and your audience will provide some input. Btw, I’m 65, too young to develop cataract? Thank you again, doctor.
Sir your video is really helpful for me but I have cataract but I see yellow spot Blue spot purple spots red spot sometime in my vision so what is this? What is this disease please 🥺 tell me
I wore bifocals for 3 decades. My distance vision started to improve at about age 70. Could that be due to oncoming cataracts. I no longer need glasses other than for reading.
I'm 53 and have cataracts. According to my reg eye Dr they have worsened from July 2022 to Oct 2022. But the surgeon I was sent to said he wouldn't do surgery just because of my age.
Hi Betty But you’re just a kid!!! I’m 71 and just a few months ago, my Doctor removed my cataracts in 2 separate procedures . It was a doddle! And best of all, I now have perfect eyesight for the first time in my life: before surgery, my eyesight was - 5 so I was extremely short sighted. Now, I can see perfectly, no need for spectacles . My advice : why not change your eye doctor?? . At 53 you’re still a kid. Best of luck Anne

Ur GS should get you in right away for laser surgery. It’s no big deal it takes minutes. I drove myself to both. But I’m still on latanoprost at night. Only once a day drops.
i had snurgery for cattlelacs my eyes are fantastic it was so easy to no problems so no reason the have fear before operation

Thank you. Great education.
Learned a lot from this. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Cataracts seem to happen mainly in near sighted people and near sightedness seems to get progressively worse.
Excellent video Thank you‼️❤️
What is good experience in terms of years, for a cataract surgeon? One, two, five, etc. And is a training situation ok for this or should an established practitioner be called upon?
That is difficult to answer
Thank you so much sir from Nepal🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵
you are welcome
Thank you Doc, for that well explained manifestations of cataract.
Great video !!
thank you now I know I definitely have cataracts most likely
EXCELLENT......Thank you.....
Good information. I was told at my last eyeglass exam that I had cataracts forming. Now to me it seems that I’m looking through a fog, like on a foggy morning! Sort of hazy. I’m thinking that I need to get something but still hesitant. Thanks for the code. New sub.
Best of luck!
Thank you for very knowledge and useful information you gave
So my opthomologist did cataract surgery on my eyes 2 years ago. I'm now wondering if I even needed it. Did not have the symptoms except dry eyes & glare at night. Neither of these changed after surgery.
I was told I had uveitis before the cateracts therefore 3-4 injections in each eye BEFORE he said cataracts.
I still have sarcoid uveitis & he says my vision will not get any better. It's extremely frustrating & depressing.
Gotta ask something I'm only 13 and my friend said she saw my eyes turn white many times
Very detailed and informative video! New subscriber here!
Welcome aboard! Can you share your experience?
Serious question: why don’t ophthalmologists perform lens change during vitrectomy surgery? It’s almost guaranteed that vitrectomy surgery speeds up the cataract formation. I went through vitrectomy surgery in January, and cataract surgery 9 months later for a dense cataract. The cataract surgery was 100 times more painful than the vitrectomy surgery. Make it make sense…..
The general philosophy is not to make any procedure more complicated than it needs to be...that reduces the risk of complications.
I went for my vitreous detachment f/u and then was told getting early cataract

Excellent information, thank you
I noticed that reading has become more difficult…because of contrast loss.
Great video. Thanks Dr!
Thanks
They can probably still do catarct surgery even if advanced
Thank You for this video..

My post cataract operation results watery eyes and film formation that thickens so uncomfortable to a good vision.
So far, right eye done. I have the same... watery eye and film formation. Surgery was 2 weeks ago. I'm assuming that this will stop in time.
I have early cataracts at 25 Yo, is it better to wait until i can no longer work before having the surgery? maybe to wait for better technology?
Excellent video.!!!!
What does the lack of red? I see blue but not red. Red turns to orange or yellow.

Do I need to surgery now?when should I surgery?
I wore bifocals for 3 decades. My distance vision started to improve at about age 70. Could that be due to oncoming cataracts. I no longer need glasses other than for reading.
Thank you sir.
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
I'm 53 and have cataracts. According to my reg eye Dr they have worsened from July 2022 to Oct 2022. But the surgeon I was sent to said he wouldn't do surgery just because of my age.

Hi Betty
But you’re just a kid!!!
Best of luck

@@annewebster8881 Well done, anne. My optician in the U.K. said referals have to be made to a hospital. He doesn't do the operations himself. You were quite lucky.
l had cataract surgery at 48 and it went great , lf cataracts are affecting your vision you need surgery no matter what age, cataract sugery has a 98% success rate
Agree I'm young to have them. It can be genetic.
Thanks.
It seems every time you go to the dentist you need a root canal. Every time an old person goes to the eye dr you need cataract surgery. It happened to me and I don’t have any problems w my eyes. $$$$$$
Thanks 😁🖐👍
