The anime sure did show how lively night city is and how all of it is just a facade to a dying society with people dying left and right. The anime is a huge W not just for cyberpunk players but also to anime fans who need another great anime to watch.
I'd even say the cyberpunk genre.
I also find that itâs a pretty neat allegory to the anime sub culture in general.
How it seems all pretty and âempoweringâ with it having emotional stories that tell both tales of tragedy and triumph.
Until you realize most anime shows use too much emotion and too little logic in an attempt to make filler content, itâs primary audience being the overworked society of Japan, and how it slowly influences you to hide away from the real world and retreat into your own bubble of stores in your head.
Exactly how night city goes. All this glamour yet underneath that pretty mask is an ugly scar filled with death and decay from the corpses dragged under the bus.
Yah it is just sad that despite really good reviews this anime will probably not be popular. It does not appeal to wide audience - I mean the isekai harem blah blah blah all those degenerate anime fans that constitute 50% of the viewerbase are already complaining. 'Too much gore' 'too short' 'no funny punchlines'. It is sad that most people prefer trash fodder instead of a genuine anime.
Bladerunner 2049 met the same fate. Great movie, great morals, philosophy, generally a story appealing to the core of humanity and yet most people found it 'boring' and it slipped through unnoticed. World is broken.

To those who don't already know, the bar featured in the show, the afterlife, names their drinks from individuals who made a lasting impression on night city, from legends basically. And yes, one of their drinks is called "The David Martinez."
You also could only get a drink if you bite it in a legendary way. Johnny stormed and killed dozens in Arasaka tower and David annihilated a whole militech battalion and somewhat held his own against Arasakaâs top gun.

I think that's kind of the point though. Anyone can die a brutal death at any time and there is no justice or injustice to it. It's just the life of the cyberpunk. Live fast, die young.

@@CulturedCrusader since you only mentioned kill la kill and ttgl and said didnt like much of the stuff since, i do have to wonder whats your opinion on promare then.
Also sorry to say this, but Rebecca>Lucy
Rebecca was clearly best girl. She was the only one who cared enough to realize that David was going over the edge even before the cyberskeleton incident, and if David and the others to listen to her they would all still be alive. She literally gave her life for David even while accepting that she wasn't the one he was interested in. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of people out there right now vowing to find her shotgun in game(you can, go look for it at the corpo plaza area) just so they can blow Adam Smasher to bits with it.
People forget that Lucy set David up to die and it was thanks to Maineâs kindness as well as the fact that his mom was âpart of the crewâ that he lived.
â@@JohnDoe3-1-4 She didn't set him up to die though. Maine wanted his Sandevistan back and DISCUSSED the possibility of killing him for it since it was cheaper than doing it the legit way (which David would actually live through) but Lucy spoke up twice against doing that (in her apartment at least...how guilty she felt initially is kinda up for grabs). You seem to be forgetting that she had just met him and recognized that he had the gear that her "boss" had paid for before he got screwed (again the whole "killing him" shit was mostly Maine's idea and only got brought up in the apartment).
Also Lucy was on the same page as Rebecca that David needed to cool his shit with the implants and even told him that to his face. I agree that Rebecca was easily one of the best characters in that anime (and pretty much any anime) but y'all are fangirling over her a little too hard =/
Meanwhile I'm sitting here grieving over my boi Maine Q_Q
@@MrRawrCEO Don't get me wrong, I agree with you overall, it's just that for me the fact that Rebecca never once thought of ditching her clearly psycho friend because it was a suicide mission that makes her best girl. Going with him to rescue the girl he was really interested in despite obvious feelings for him, that's real shit. Lucy's solo antics got her caught up and fucked up, even though she was doing it for David, her lack of trust lead to the team's end ultimately. She needed someone watching her back, David needed her at his back to bring him back from the edge, like Rebecca said.
Also, yeah same about Maine. Moment of silence for the homie that still managed to recognize David through his full blown cyberpsychosis and tell him to run rather than just fucking zeroing him out then and there.
can confirm, Guts is now one of my favorite Iconics and I'm pivoting from a reflex build to a body build to shove it down Smasher's throat
@@MrRawrCEO I didnât forget anything, she was opposed to the idea of killing him but didnât put up much of a fight against the idea. She knew that he was going to likely be killed for it when she set him up. Yes, but it doesnât excuse her previous actions.

Sandevistan is definitely mid though; if David had a Kerenzikov and knew how to bhop across night city- he would've been unstoppable.
This anime was built in the style of 90âs anime. Chaotic, gritty, brutal and deeply and I am here for it. Brought that occult feeling back. Anime these days arenât like this anime and itâs sad.
yeah it's been so long I have seen anime with such 90s raw like feelings. The protagonist had actual personality which is rare these days.
I agree.. I also really felt that nostalgia that was strange coming from a new anime but I really understood when I finished and looked back.
Completely agree; thought it was just me. It felt so good to watch this, like something lost had been found. The color design was absolutely phenomenal, using analogue and complementary schemes perfectly, and meshing saturation with grit and texture so well. The way characters are drawn in certain scenes, like the first time David gets a nose bleed is very late 90s/early 2000s. It just has a cool, underground feel to it that anime forgot about. And that grain filter on Maineâs hallucination scenes in episode 6 just felt right.
I thought I couldnât enjoy anime anymore, like I had changed and I could only like the stuff I grew up with. Shows like this and Mob Psycho give me hope.
I understand that there aren't too many chaotic, gritty and brutal animes as in the '80s to 2000s but there are some out there like Attack on Titan, Devilman Crybaby, Mushoku Tensei, 86, Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song, Vinland Saga, Re-Zero, and Made in Abyss. It's just that you need to go deeper to find those types of anime
Instead we get GOATED anime like Bocchi the Rock
Great review.
I want to mention something about the show length. Short and sweet is how Cyberpunk stories were always told. Originally these stories are tabletop RPG scenarios. When David's whole story is over in 10 episodes, that's just faithful to the source material. Having the same crew for several seasons would absolutely not fit in. Cyberpunks find their legendary and/or tragic conclusion in no time at all.
agreed. some people also complained why the character death seems meaningless.
I mean, it's Night City after all. Whatever you do, the city will still kicking the next day.

the reason why this show feels like a return to the form of kill la kill and the like is because this is the first trigger series in a while to be directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, who is the director of those classic name-making trigger shows.
Honestly, this anime was so fucking good. For only 10 episodes istg it created the feeling of an entire full length anime. action-packed, Gore-filled, Titty-Bazoombin, it all gives the anime such an amazing look, feel.
I've heard some criticisms for how short it was, and how so much content was squished down to such a short show. But I think that doesn't matter, in 10 episodes it could deliver so much raw emotion and action, while I would've liked a longer anime, its amazing just the way it is.

For me this anime hit me hard because of how short it was, it ended so suddenly and in such a painfully sad way that it hit me like a bullet. I can say with confidence that this anime is the only one to ever make me cry like someone whoâs experienced a loved ones death. Also because of how it leaves you craving for more it helps bring people to the game and give it some much needed attention. The dub is notable for having Giancarlo Esposito as Faraday, as well as returning cast from the game for Wakako and Adam Smasher, and I could be wrong, but Delamain, too. It's not perfect, but the VAs returning from the game really lends those characters a lot more believability if you played the game. I think the problems with the dub are the attempt at adding stutters in to make dialogue sound naturalistic, which didn't translate into the performances, the characters just sometimes say things twice, and then some of the writing for the returning characters can be a little too verbose for their character, especially with Adam Smasher. The usual thing also occurs, a few lines here and there are said with the wrong intonation, but whatever, it's not like it happens with every other line.
I just assumed them saying things twice was nc slang/lingo.

One of the things I love is the parallel with V (Spoilers, for Cyberpunk 2077, you've been warned).
David is practically a know-nothing kid at the start. His tolerance is his one benefit, but by and large he has to start from scratch, and he grows into an absolute unit of an Edgerunner, and his choice is to give his life for the people he loves. But he also *feels* trapped, when for he and Lucy, all it would take is for him to choose to walk away, and the two could have a happy ever after. He chose to become a legend in spite of that.
Contrast V: Regardless of lifepath, they're skilled, no matter what they're doing. A Corpo has training, the Streetkid is still skilled enough to be a Solo early on, and the Nomad isn't new, just Naive because they come from an entirely different environment they escaped because of clan politics. They're also a loner, more or less, until they meet Jackie. Shit happens, and this skilled character gets someone they could call a true friend, family besides, and more. And all it takes is one botched job for it to all go wrong. They get sick, saddled with something they shouldn't have that's slowly killing them, and in the process they come to find the meaning of their life, and even though they're a loner at heart, they come to discover that there are people who care about them, that they never have to face their problems alone. It too Johnny constantly in their head for them to learn that.
David's story is about how his death had meaning, and how he was happy to give his life for others. How despite having barely any dreams, he'd give it all if it meant the one he loved could have hers.
V's is about learning the value of your life, and what it means to fight for it, be it to the bitter end or clawing for every scrap of time you've got, and damn anyone who says otherwise. And knowing that there will always be people you love trying to lift you up.
Not to mention, on the broader sense of Cyberpunk as a setting: Johnny, Rogue, David, V...tomorrow it will be someone else, the next day someone else. Night City, it's the city of legends, a meat grinder - It doesn't matter the age, there will always be someone striving to sit on that throne.
Edgerunners broke my heart

No good ending in Night City
at least it was bittersweet and not a bad ending.
Ending for David was so badass, perfect death for edgerunner
Depends on interpretation too though. In a way, that was the best ending for an edgerunner. The whole theme of the Afterlife is to live your life the way you want and end it in a blaze of glory. Hence David's smile at the end... he was truly happy.
@@atrocious7766 The best ending? Wow, looks like I am the only one who thinks, that it felt totally wrong. Killed by Smasher does not make you a legend, ask Johnny how he felt. David grows up in Santa Domingo, his local ripper doc has a 6th street logo plastered on his building. The damn "walk" sound effect when David is crossing the street is straight from the game. The story would work if you plopped it right into Night City and ran with it. It helps the original story was written by the guy who wrote the story for the game, and Mike Pondsmith the creator of the Cyberpunk RPG himself signed off on it.
This is a quality show all around made my people who clearly wanted to do it right.

Iâd argue thereâs at least a few regrets on Davidâs plate. His end is a tragedy. He does not regret saving Lucy or living for his friends. But he 100% wishes he couldâve gone to the moon with Lucy. He even said so himself. If he time to properly communicate what he wanted and hear what other people wanted. Maybe a slightly better ending couldâve happened
I feel like cyberpunk is more of a cautionary tale than anything
yeah after watching it twice tho, i must pin this on lucy tho - he was trying to communicate with her, ask her to come back, telling her he needs her, team needs her, team also told her he needs her, and she still put ignore on all that and went stubborn solo like a 0 exp gonk noob - not only after working with a team for over 2 years she should have known very well it's stupid to go on missions alone, and that it's better to work with a team, have a backup, rear protection, additional pair of eyes looking out for you, but also she literally ignored david's needs and i can't understand why, her character seems so inconsistent throughout. she was clearly sensitive and shrewd, cleverly noticing david was living gloria's dream and it wasnt his early on, but then just went full on mute as she got closer with him even? this makes no sense at all. just before the last heist they had this talk, david again clearly says he needs her, and she makes a couple of bad ignore/denial/run away & hide decisions there then that make him think about breaking up even? and she just LEAVES him with that thought??? wtf.
after watching this show i have been recommended video's by smaller creators on different platforms which is great. Keep up the good work!
I'm willing to bet this is just gonna be the first of multiple collaborations between CDPR and Studio Trigger. They clearly have strong creative chemistry and this anime near-singlehandedly saved the game from being forgotten anytime soon despite its blunder of a launch.

And the ending is what got me to respect David even more, even Smasher was not sure about finishing him right off, and in the end, David died with a smile of his face, and became the legend that came in just like V, before V, young, out of nowhere, and became one of the best.
I also saw the dub. With the exception of David's scream when seeing his mom in all that death situation, everything else convinced me and it was great. I even cried a little at the end. It was a nice experience to see this show.

From what I can tell everything is from the game. All of the locations in the show are places in the game, shy of a few like Lucy's apartment. Even Rebecca's apartment is a location you can physically enter. All that music too? Tracks from the game shy of a few. Its either ingame combat OST or ambience, or music from the jngame radio stations, the song that plays while David and Lucy walk on the moon being a track from Body heat radio. I thought it was interesting with just how faithful the show is to the universe CPDR made. Definitely needs either another season or some kind of ingame questline with the surviving characters.
I love this anime. It really captures that there are no happy stories in Night City. Just moments of tolerable existence surrounded by death, corruption and pain.

Which made me wonder if it was put in there with the intention of making us laugh. Which is weird considering it was a tense moment but maybe it could've been there way of alleviating the cliche of the hero stating he was different without it just coming off as cringe đ€·ââïž
I'm not into anime whatsoever, but Cyberpunk Edgerunners was a definite joy to watch.
Same. Was kind of wondering what I was getting myself into when I started but glad I did
@@Rctdcttecededtef it reminds me of Halo Legends of sorts as well, to an extent, how it's anime but still a joy to watch.
@@st.paddymad7085 it did sort of remind me of that one aswel, funny that you should mention it!
I think similarities it shared was the fast paced action sequences. Reminded me alot of that one halo legends episode where the Spartan was fighting a brute
@@Rctdcttecededtef I think that episode is called Odd One Out and I think itâs a parody of Dragon Ball Z. The Arasaka exoskeleton reminded me of the prototype that Ghost used, where he sets the nuke off with the âBe Humanâ voice key.
@@st.paddymad7085 yes that did remind me of that episode too. Greats mind think alike I guess đ
Solid review. I had been having a tough time finding an anime that really grabbed my attention lately but this one checked all the boxes for me
This review actually did what I thought was impossible. It actually helped me find peace with Davidâs ending. Thank you my guy. Not all heroes wear capes
01:14 , the moment I'm sure Lucy fell in love with David. (And personally, the moment I fell in love with Lucy the Character). Rebecca is cute as well.
Idk if you watched the show but this is the moment David fell in love with her most likely. Lucy developed feeling overtime, in reality she was just trying to keep him from getting killed so the Sandevistan would go to maine who appears while they are Brain dancing and she basically betrays David. When David joins the crew they get to know one another and she looks at him and feels pity because "You dont make a name for yourself as a Cyberpunk by how you live, make a name by how you die." And she just feels that if he died it would be her fault. But she does develop feeling for him during the Jobs they work and etc. And in the end does fall in love with him and falls hard. And at the same time begins to open up more mostly to David but also to the crew and her cold exterior remains the same but I'm sure the crew has picked up on a few changes and her raging emotions when it comes to David or her skills in netrunning.
@@waxierzero2198
I like how a lot of these characters separate their professional life to their personal lives. I like to think the reason Lucy fell in love with him is because he was such a genuine person in a city filled with 2 faced parasites. (Kiwi and Faraday just to name two)
If max0r did anime reviews then this is what it would be like.
You got your self a new sub. đ
Good review man! Scamboli reviews started small and youâre giving me similar vibes! Keep it up!
Lucy is the best girl of summer 2022?
Youâre goddamn right.
Generic crazy carbon copy girl of the last 7 years
David Martinez: aim high and go out with a bang.
That he did. And then some. Rest in peace you legend.
Came for the review, stayed for the culture. You got my sub
Subscribed just for "Failure". I have not heard that marvel in any video yet. Props!
Quality upload. I really liked your interpretation on the ending and what it meant to David (and to an extent Lucy).
Donât know if youâll see this brother but, I havenât enjoyed someoneâs content like yours in awhile, subbed.
I had to doublecheck your subscribers because you sould like you should have millions. Great review man
wouldn't mind seeing a longer video that delves deeper into this anime!
This channel is a hidden gem. Loved your funny analysis of the show
great take, loved your commentaries and review. Hope you get more subs!
First "real" Anime i watched in my life (watched Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade and Invincible, i donÂŽt know if that counts).
And after three days iÂŽm still thinking about it and cannot get over the tragic ending.
Lucy and Davids last kiss with this fucking track (I Really Want to Stay at Your House) kills me every time.
Also really liked how the made Adam Smasher a force of nature that even MaxTac feared.
Amazing show and well made cyberpunk atmosphere.
Smasher has access to state of the art cyberware from Arasaka and has always been a psychopath. When he agreed to Arasaka's offer of a full body replacement in return for servitude he wanted a stipulation added to the contract: that he be allowed to cause as much collateral damage as he pleases during missions. One might think that Arasaka would've been hesitant to accept that, thinking it'd be a PR nightmare, but they wanted Smasher to be someone who'd make people piss _and_ shit themselves if they heard he was coming for them. In short... Yeah, definitely not someone to be taken lightly, even if you're MaxTac :p
yeah it's been abt 4 days since I watched, still can't get over the ending. Tried rewatching, still can't get over it. Best way to cope with this is probs to rewatch till eppy 4, forget about what happens after and headcanon the rest.
@@ashenzenden tried that... didnÂŽt help - still too much emotional damage
@@HideousConformity if this is lore; thanks, cool to know :D
After watching this serie i kinda like Adam Smashers character as the bad guy, really well designed
Go watch more anime and you'll notice how bad this one actually is.
Bro, your channel is straight up fire
10/10 anime. Intro was very hype, characters were amazing, the ending made me cry a bit, AND THAT EFFING CREDITS SONG GETS ME EVERYTIME.
WE cannot wait for the Lucy fanart
This anime season has been fantastic. 3 suberp shows:
Edgerunners, Made in Abyss s2, and Lycoris Recoil and a surprsingly good comedy, Uncle from Another World. I don't even remember when we had it this good and I've watched anime regularly for 15 years now
Congrats man you have been picked up by the algorithm and rightfully so I lik what you selling you got a new subscriber
Holy shit I first wasnt going to watch the vid. But thank god I did. Great video, commentary and all in all entertaining clips. Keep going my man
Great video. Keep going bro you're gonna blow up! đđđ
Hopefully in the future we can get falco or Lucy or both in the actual game as interactable NPC's giving us gigs and missions
Falco can give missions or be interactable, def prefer Lucy staying on the moon and being a radio comm cameo at best; The implication is that she's escaped that life so it'd be very weird to have her back in the life after everything. I'd like a mission where we just just send David's Jacket to her.
i really loved your last comment about watching stuff on netflix xD made me laugh + the way you said it.
Rebecca went out in Rebecca style shooting while shouting hey we're having a moment here then gets squashed.

Here, for folks like us? Wrong city, *wrong people*

'Becca is the best girl. Lucy is 2nd best at best.
a true man of culture
Second that.
Lucy would be best girl but suffers from Main Girl Syndrome.
Becca was the best bud, girl who tried, lost but came to terms for not getting the D she wanted and stuck with David because. Best Girl.
Besides, who doesn't want a borderline Type B Yandere Loli as his GF?
fax
Dorio best girl
Agreed.
Just wanna say congrats. Keep seeing your vid on my recommendations and the views are đ. Well played my friend
Dude I felt the same way!! I see your only at 4.4K subs right now! So Iâm gonna sub now, remember me when you hit 1 mill!
Bro can we have a mod that changes the Graphics of cyberpunk to be more like the anime even adding new anime clothes and hair i would play more and i have like 69 hours in already
My Netflix actually had the dub on by default so I didnât even realize Japanese was the original language. Just tells you how damn good the dub is. Iâd also recommend a rewatch in dub if you havenât and you speak the language. The way the slang rolls off the tongue comes off so natural and it does a lot for the characters demeanor and emotions set in the scene. Iâll have to do my own rewatch in Japanese.
love the editting style. Also enjoyed the commentary. You really should try the game out and put out a review like this one, I'd watch for sure.
Thanks for making this video †Your videos are entertaining surely youâll get more subscribers sooon, keep it up my man đ
Well, scenario was made by european and series is custom made for presenting certain world. It's western animation in all but style - fanservice limited, no filler, barely any japanese tropes. Yes it's different.
Probably why it's so good. They actually wanted to tell a story instead of appealing to no life weebs
oh yeah lets look at those western story like crunchyroll spice guardian,so great of a story huh?
@@fauzanadrian1593 Iâm not sure what you are trying to say. Iâm not claming that EVERY western animation is good. Spice creators wanted to make anime with some modern western themes. Screenwriter of CPE wanted to make classic cyberpunk story with japanese animation. Not neccessary the same, isnât it?
>fanservise limited
>you can see every girl of the show naked for 1 time at least
@@purpl361 Customary beach scene - fanservice. Special boob physics - fanservice. Silly miniscule familiar that can serve as a symbol of a series (and plushie/toy/logo on a pack of snacks) - fanservice. Overload of characters blushing, using âeye symbolsâ - fanservice. Harem - fanservice. Tsunderes everywhere - fanservice. Here? Just one half hearted loli and single scene with classic japanese tropes (heart-eyes). If you think people going around buttnaked constitute fanservice, think again. đ€Ł
This video really spoke right about this show. This is really makes me interest on actual Cyberpunk 2077 game.
Gonna rewatch this one more time.
The game itself is alot better than its old 1.0 version
Only if u get the ps5/series x/pc version though.
This video, also, was built different. Subbed.
I like how the anime integrates into the game like you could literally find almost every scene you can find in the game its cool
didn't think i would love this anime so much... the end really maaddeee me cry
I dont cry from much, but this show had me bawling on episode 6 and the final episode.
The Intro is fye af ngl
I see you are a man of culture, I will draw lucy fanart now.
This show emotionally destroyed me lol
It was spectacular, though itâs only flaw I recognized was that it was too short, after episode six it felt kinda rushed due to that problem.
Bro this dude is funny as HELL đ. Subscribed đŻ
Sounds like it's a decent cyberpunk romp. Might check it out when I have nothing better to do. Appreciate the review!
Based review, W take big bro. Nah but seriously though this was refreshing. Probably the best Anime Trigger has put out in years
id honestly recommend you watch it in dub rather then sub unless you can understand Japanese, the anime was clearly made for a very wide audience so they put a lot into the English dub, e.g Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring from breaking bad) as Faraday. the subtitles often mistake bits of slag and in-universe terminology for other things so it ends up being a little bit of a mess.
oh no no no. even if one understands japanese it's still inferior to the english version. the slang is either completely missing (no gonks and choombas) or feels very forced (tech names are translated, yes, but sound foreign and stand out very much as loan words they are - organically they would have been "acclimatised" by native speakers in time, as history has shown, but how each term ends up is anyone's guess so they are not "processed" in this way of course, so it's just cut & paste from english therefore alien feel). some things are also just "off" despite japanese being the OG version and english being translated.
i'm as weeb as weebs get, but this is the first anime where i ditched the JP OG and watched the EN DUB instead. it's not only good in terms of voice acting, if not superior (ripperdoc, becca etc.) but it is just linguistically superior, by far.
This anime changed me man, that ending FUCKED me up. I'm still coping to this day, that damn song is still stuck in my head! I feel like crying when hearing that song, it makes me think how much I missed out in my life as a introvert, I think to myself how I missed opportunity's to hang out with friends and bond with my family. And most importantly having a life. I'm 21 rn, I'm trying my best to make up for lost time.
I love the sarcasm and based ass memes at the same time Iâm subbing. Youâll be at 100k soon.
This show needs a second season, i wish they had told this storyline over 2 seasons, but it seems they only planned on one season so they condensed it, but i hope they reconsider that notion. Night city has so many more cinematic stories to tell, and as someone whose played over 500 hours in 2077, I have enjoyed the show far more than the game frankly. A second season is very much needed and Lucy is most interesting character of the show, so following her story would be so fascinating.
So it isn't necessary to live long to get everything you want. When its done you can go
Great video man, you earned a sub!
Amen, Brother... Took the words right out of my mouth. CP:Edgerunners was great, sad its already over tho
