Great loudspeakers from JBL. - Sport
Thank you for this review I've been waiting months for an SRX review that's in English!!!
Great Review Eric. Thanks!
Expensive and amazing setup!
Very good review. Thank you.
+Crusader D I couldn't reply directly to your comment, but I am not able to put these on tripods by myself if upright. I can put the 835 on the ground sideways, plug in the stand horizontally, and tilt the pair upright very carefully. As for flatbed loading, it is possible by myself, but it's always nice to have another set of hands. Bend from the knees!
Great video Eric, having the same issue with my 828. EDM and hip hop bass is lacking. Saw your other video on how to eq with the audio architect. Any chance you can do it with the iOS srx connect app? Showing the hardware (router, cables etc)? I'd appreciate it
Great review. I’m thinking of picking up a pair
LOVED this video bud. I am looking at getting some of these. As a pickup truck owner, do you have advice for transport? Would getting a tonneau cover keep these things safe enough in the rain driving down the road, or do you use a topper? Thanks.
Great ! Thanks for the feedback !
Nothing but good reviews ffom these speakers. I'm seriously looking into 2x what you have (2 tops 2-3 subs a side) for live sound events.
POWER and Clean Sound. say no more Thank You for the review.
have you looked into RCF subs? hiw would these compare, i know these are dual 18, but the RCF 8004as single 18 is massive. any feedback is good. thanks. great vid.
I have the Subs it using them with the PRX715... will have to buy the Tops (SRX835P's) next.
Thanks for the upload
thanks for the video... question, do you have a cover/bag? do you transport them just like they are?
looking to get a set of those but concerned ab out traveling with them, and lastly do you/have you mounted them on a stand?
thanks
John
Did you test out the two way versions in this series with the SRX 828sp's or just with the thee way tops?
Do you keep the 828 like you have it in your garage or do you stand it up when you put the 835 on top of it at gigs? I'm looking at these, but I don't have a 2nd set of hands and trying to use poles would be out of the question at the weight of each speaker..
Great review! I've heard from different opinions from multiple professionals and most say to set your powered speakers at unity gain and to use your mixer to adjust db to get the highest fidelity. If these subwoofers are rated at 29hz at -10db should I set the gain on them to -10db? Would that yield better frequency response but a loss in overall SPL? Also what enviornment did you test the response when you noticed the drop in the bass range? Did it really "sound" better; or because there was just way more bass, which these subs can defiantly handle? Just curious.
+Adam Mester Always go as hot as you can from the source (without clipping at the mixer's input) and attenuate at the amplifiers for the cleanest sound. Avoid going above unity at any point to achieve loudness, you'll get distortion eventually. I often run the speakers' amps at -15db and don't even come near unity on the main mix. -10db at 29hz means that the SPL produced at 29hz is about 1/9th that of a frequency in the subs' optimal range. You can EQ up the low 30s to get more from it, but you'll be taxing the amps without much benefit as low frequencies are power-hungry and these already have great performance into the 40-35hz range. EQ-ing out the hole just levels out the response. For layered sub-bass effects used in hip-hop and EDM it gave the sound more fullness, not necessarily more intense bass.
Nice review man I'm getting them
Good luck getting it its 2 thousand dollars
How did you measure the hole in the response? Was your mic placed on the ground plane?
Nice speakers. Love them, you should make a video with this baby's in action
No point.
I admire your budget..lol keep up the good work
Can I ask for your opinion on the three-way vs the two-way tops? I am planning on getting two (or more) srx728 passive subwoofers and I am debating between the different srx series passive tops. I want to have very powerful low frequencies (Covered by the srx728 subs) but I also want top cabinets that produce adequate powerful high and mid frequencies for use in bigger events. Would it be best to get the srx815 tops because they focus the same1600W power rating as the srx835's into only high and mid drivers, OR the srx835 tops? My only concern with the srx835's is that they will produce less high and mid frequencies than the srx815's since the same power rating in the srx815's is being used to also power the low-frequency driver in the 835's. Any thoughts on this?
Hi Eric, thanks to take some time to give feedbacks. I own a pair of QSC KW153. Love them, they are reliable and the mid woofer added to the 15in and the horn just take how the band sound to another level compare to KW122. I pair them with KW181 (1, 2 or 3 depending of the crowd). MY QUESTION, have you had the chance to compare your SRX835P with KW153? Like I said, I love how they sound but the technology behind the QSC KW is getting old compare to the JBL SRX line and EV ETX line. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your reply!
Qsc kw 153 sounds good but nothing special, when you really do push them they distort. And also the kw153 needing a revision especially now in 2023.. however qsc is very reliable, it can take a true beating.
we bought 4 srx828sp and 4 srx835p. great speakers!!!! do yourself a favor and buy the road cases to keep them looking great.
i bought cases for these from kent custom cases from ebay. super quality, 6 weeks delivery time, about $525 each.
Hello Eric I was looking at purchasing 2 jbl 718xlf's because I'm currently using 2 prx 715 tops but now i'm interested in the srx 828p. Do you know if the prx series is compatible with the srx series and if so have you heard the 718xlf's? I've heard them and 2 of them do sound amazing! I'm looking for that deep punch which you will get from 2 718 xlf's.
Phase issues can come at different frequencies could be what's happening at 46 to 52 Hertz. Processor with sweepable phase and time delay can fix most rooms
hey man how to u think those 835s would go with an srx 818 at the base of each one, plus 1 or 2 stx 828s in the middle? these bad boys are monsters, and I cannot wait for them to come!
May I please ask, did you perform your testing in multiple rooms? Are you sure the frequency hole wasn't a issue with the characteristic of the room it is in? In other words, did you confirm the frequency hole in multiple locations?
I think he's accurate because Ive encountered the same problem in different venues on certain songs that put out those frequencies.
Hi what would u say about kw153 and kw 118 compared to this
Nice speakers bro
Thanks for the review. Just picked up some 835s. First pair of powered speakers. Where do you usually set your input gain level and output level on these? Thanks.
+Howard Smith Source (laptop, controller, multimedia device, etc.) into to mixer as hot as can go before input clips/peaks out, set using mixer input gains. Unity gain on speaker inputs, -20db on outputs. I'll put the amp's output at unity if I know I'm going to be pushing hard. Make sure the sensitivity is set correctly between consumer, line, and microphone. Read the manual on JBL's site. Use mixer's "main mix" sliders for volume control, staying under +4db on the output meter at the peaks. I have a mono setup and control the subs on the right channel and tops on the left so they're independently adjustable. Working from a hot source outward will net you a cleaner sound instead of compensating by jacking the gains.
Do the two 828’s keep up with the tops? Looking at EDM/Techno and I’ve heard a couple people say they don’t. Thinking of possible doing three 828s, but am nervous about stack height.
Im getting the same thing, i already have the 828sp, but i pick up my 835s this week. And put another 828 on layaway. I love guitar center.
Hey it would be cool to see you JBL system set up and getting after it
Im getting my 2x835Ps in a couple of days. I wondered if you had any experience using the built in EQ to bass boost the 835Ps? If so, what freq range and how many DBs do you recomend to boost?
1:38
Thank you for the review. Our church of 500 seats currently has 4 QSC K12's and I literally hate them! The midrange gets muddy on anything above 85db. Do you think 2 of these 835p will be a lot better? Again, it's not sheer output I'm after, as we rarely go above 90db, but I'm an audiophile, and I really appreciate quality. We run dual 18" subs FWI. On trade, the 4 QSC's will pay for half of the JBL pair.
+Trevor Crowe I think you'll be happy with the 835s. I'm still loving mine! I had the QSC setup before and they had a propensity to become quite harsh in the highs. Two 835s may be enough depending on acoustics, but you can stretch them further if you tune them to work with the subs correctly as speakers usually limit out in the lower end first.
For quality sound for church (speech and full band), rather go for RCF NX-L24 or RCF NX-L44 series or the DB Tech Ingenia series (Digital Steering and stacks without comb filter issue). These (JBL) speakers are monsters in terms of SPL for live band and DJ Music but are inferior in terms of sound quality to the aforementioned brands. But you get what you pay. RCF and DB TECH are high end brands and more expensive!
What volume level do you recommend, in the I only use half and listen low
Just got the 828. How do you bump the 48hz up? And what level of DB do you keep it on?
How do the 835s perform for live sound on their own. I just bought a pair and was wondering that myself
hey I'm thinking about getting these for my outdoor gigs will they be good for that and how much people do you think i can cover for lets say a sporting event with about 150 to 250 people.........will these work ????
you set up that hole in the eq on the speakers software?
Hi, very helpfull review .how far do the 835 throw before sound drops off ?How big of a crowed can you cover with this system comfortably ?Thank you
+Roland It really depends on environment. I was DJ-ing a fall festival for 200 or so and with calm air 100yds was no problem as long as you keep the mains at/above head level. Wind is obviously a factor. You lose the "feel" from the subs around 50ft on a crowded floor, but the sound remains clean. It really depends on the acoustics at the venue and how you can use them to your advantage.
great video man
quick question how would compare this to the qsc kw153?
and also how did you run a frequency sweep
thanks and congrats on your JBL's they look amazing
I loved the kw 181, but i love my 828sp much better. Hits the lows like crazy.
@@jessejames8572 compared to qsc 118 upgrade what u think
hey whats up eric i have the 835 with 828 music i play is mostly dancehall, what i notice is that the limit comes on before the speakers actually covers the room. does the limit on these mean that its clipping or is there a red clip light like my qsc w12's.
+Martin Dus Mixtapes They will limit to protect themselves well before audibly clipping. If you are pushing the limiters on the regular you may want to consider adding more speakers and/or making sure the tops and sub are set to work with each other. (SRX top/SRX Sub) This will ensure the 835's woofers/amps aren't being overtaxed as dancehall is bass heavy.
respect
Please check your Gain Structure.
This video is pretty old so I don't expect to get a reply, but I was wondering if the 48hz hole was ever fixed with a firmware update or do I still need to adjust it in 2021?
I would like to know how you provide power to these beasts. I know you cant be running these from a single 15A breaker, or even a 20A with 2 of the 828's. Please advise as I am seriously thinking of upgrading from the prx's.
Each Top/Sub Pair should run fine on their Own 20amp Breaker.
Great video. Would you mind sharing how you adjusted that flat spot? I just purchased a pair and I am waiting for them to arrive. Thanks!
+sbcbrianb Here you go: czcams.com/video/G2pcIAp6498/video.html
+Eric F Thanks Eric! The video was perfect. Thanks for your help!
How many watts do subs have and how many people can you cover with two of them indoor/outdoor?
Thanks for the vid. Question, with just the tops. How big of a crowd (how many people) would you say these speakers can handle?
+Michael Feliciano It depends on crowd density and room acoustics, but I would say no more than 100 if you want your bass to be really felt on the floor.
+Eric F no more than 100 for 2 srx835 and 2 828? i would of thought about 400-500 easily.
Hello,
you said you put one 835 on top of a 828. Do you set up the sub vertically to realize this setup?
Hey Eric..A couple of questions for you. We run 2 282's and 2 835's per side for our band. Total of 4 top and 4 bottoms. To conform we should set the 828's at SRX Top and the 835's to SRX Sub correct? Also can I just chain the subs together and then to the tops in an "in to out" fashion?. Does that make sense?
1. Yes
2. You would only need 1 Signal Cable, then chain to the other High side, then down to the Subwoofer and back to the other Sub.
Ideally, you would want to run the Subs on their Own Signal run with their Own Volume Control.
There is no need to run a "Stereo" system as the Audience, generally drunk, will Never know the difference.
I'm very interested in the 828SP but I'm also looking at a Cerwin-Vega CVXL-118s. Not really sure what one to go with. I've always been a Cerwin fan when it comes to subs. Any advice?
The Cewin vega's are far too overpowering IMO and found they lack the clean detailed deep bass like the JBL's produce.
Visit a store that sells them and have a listen.
Man I knew it was something with the JBL 828's, I purchased a pair and noticed it was not hitting at a 50 something hertz on certain songs with bass, can I correct it with a drive rack?
does the 828 have a pole mount? how are theses holding up for you. any issues?
no pole mounts on the 828. i believe they have a kit, as they do with wheels, but they're made to work with tower PA on their own pole due to positioning. If you run these right, they'll be inside where you want your PA speakers most of the time.
Are you saying you setup an SRX828SP vertical on each side and then put the SRX 835Ps on top of those?
I have a question and really need your help. I'm looking to buy add on subwoofers. Our event usually had around 500 audience and sometime we play outdoor as well.
I'm not sure powdered and passive subwoofers.
Which option would you recommend me?
1. 2 x JBL srx828 18" dual powered subwoofers? Which costs $4000.
Or
2. 2 x JBL srx828 18" dual passive subwoofers and QSC pl 380? Total would cost $5,800.
Thank you so much!
For the Passive, you forgot to add in the cost of a Crossover and the Experience of how to set up a Crossed Over System. PLUS, the extra Weight of the Added amplifiers and rack AND Set up time.
As for the Crowd Size, it is generally 10 watts per person.
Well said
ok so i purchased a pair of 835s, what setting do you use for channel 1 and main?
Thanks for the video. I've also had experience with the QSC KW series, but am in the market for a new rig for a sound reinforcement rig to run bands...indoor gigs, outdoor patio shows, and outdoor street festivals, parks, etc. Anyway, I'm looking very seriously at these speakers...two SRX835's and two SRX828SP''s. Will be using the Presonus Studiolive RM32AI mixer and will be trying to save some $$$ with selection of powered floor monitors for foldback. I also have been looking at the Presonus Studiolive AI PA speakers, but having to buy multiple single 18" subs and more (smaller) tops is looking to be a deal breaker for my application. The Presonus speakers look great on paper, but I think the JBL will deliver more SPL at just as high fidelity again for the application I am looking at. Have you put wheels on your 828SP's?
+Pat Talbot No wheels, I use a hand truck for everything. A lot of the time I'm rolling across dirt/grass and the wheels would just sink in.
I don't have any experience with these in a live playback environment, but I doubt you'll be disappointed. Demo them if you can! How large of an audience do you want to entertain?
+Eric F Cool...the shows I'll run will vary from 50 people on up to several hundred. I'm thinking about getting a hand truck that converts into a four wheeled cart...Sam's Club has a heavy duty one for about $80 or so.
How's the menu in back? I have srx jbl, with just gain knobs.
When you say you stack the tops on top of the sub is the sub vertical or horizontal? If flat are they high enough to throw thru a crowded environment?
+TTTXX Horizontal. The 835s have enough clean power to push through everything I've asked of them. It helps in the places with 7-8ft ceilings as well. If it is going to be really dense I'd put them on stands; too much of a tipover risk if you up-end the subs IMO.
Hi Eric. Are these powered JBLS. I am interested in these but I have amps already. Just wondering if these are powered. THanks.
Yes they are powered and they will absolutely hit you in the face
+Olivia Garcia JBL has the passive SRX series that are driven by external amps if that's more your flavor.
With the passive Version of the SRX800 Series coming out I think it might be beneficial to look at the natural spec of the 2279 Driver. While the Passive Dual 18 box has a 2279H version vs the 2279F in the powered box the woofer has a -3 under measurement of 47hz on the low end. Seeing that the Active Version lists its -3 at 35 Hz I would assume that some of that lower end boost is tied to the DSP In the Unit itself. The -10 under @ 29/30 hz pretty much confirms the range.
I still think I am going to go down the STX800 Line even though they are bit more Pricey.
It would still be way more expensive because you need a solid amp to power a stx sub
It would absolutely be more expensive and the only Crown Amps to provide that level of quality would cost more than the 828SP anyways. Iron Side Amps or High end (ITECH Quality or higher) would be the best choice. The XTI Amps don't quite cut it in my opinion.
@@markwirez xti6002 is solid, the xti6002 is completely different from the 4002 and down, but I would personally use poweesoft to power those stx beast, I wouldn’t really go stx in todays world, not really the best option as they discontinued it for many reasons, the tops aren’t really the best sounding but the subs are super solid!
Hie, I want buy Speakers for the first time ever, m a DJ as well. I have QSC K12.2 & KW181 in my mind, and you mentioned you had them too. So which one of them (QSC OR JBL SRX) do u suggest me to buy.
I use kw153 and 118.....love it
how are you setting these up. channel 1? driverack?
You carry the SRX828SPs by yourself? How wide is the entire speaker? I deadlift frequently, so I was actually wondering if I would be able to carry one by myself. I see that each is 135 pounds, give or take, and I deadlift much more than that.
Any clarity would be great!
Seth Cloud no sir...but if you have a cart u cant put one of them on it..
I have a pair of the 828's and I install some wheels to move around
Would you mind letting me know how you did the frequency change? I'm a bit dum when it comes to that type of thing.
+1Entertainments Here you go: czcams.com/video/G2pcIAp6498/video.html
hey man, thank you for your video.... I hope you can help me with this.... I bought a SRX835p my question is.... can I set it up on a stand? My stand handles up to 99pounds.
Thanks for your time man
Those Tops weight about 85lbs., (39 kilos) . . . I would Not Chance them on that stand.
Do feel this is still the case in 2018 with the 48 dip
Sportster on the shelf. :)
Wow....these aren't cheap! DJ business must be good!
I'm looking to get one SRX835P for just regular listening. I used to have a Yamaha DXR15, the bass was pretty strong, but it couldn't hit the low frequencies when I would play rap music. Is the SRX835P able to go low?
+djcrazynick Yes, the official frequency response is down to 41hz, but they reach into the low 30's easily. EQ up the bottom end if it is lacking, just watch for limiting when cranked. You would really benefit from a subwoofer for the bass-intensive genres IMO. Demo one at your local dealer!
are they self powered or passive?
Do your speakers come better after playing long time? Just tested 835+828 and it sounded not precise. Promax 14a was much better compared to 835.
Christian Valtanen not even
Hey man, when you run these, do you need to run them off two circuits? whats the power draw on these bad boys
Subs and Tops pull about 9.5 amps EACH . . . So, Sub/Top on 1-20amp Breaker and the other Sub/Top on another. Speakers ONLY, do not run any lights or other equipment on these 2 breakers.
they look nice..how would you compare the sound to the etx-35p with the etx subs?
+Ronald Ventour I listened to that specific ETX setup and it sounded great too. I only went JBL because they sounded more neutral to me and had network configuration. Sound is subjective though.
are you using these for live sound or dj work?
+Ronald Ventour DJ and PA for events.
I have 4 JBL SRX828SP, what kind of power strip/block do you have to power them? I play house music and it tends to cut out after only half way volume. If you can give some feedback. Please and thank you!
use different power strips for each subwoofer cabinet that also leads to a different outlet.
For what you are doing . . . EACH Sub should be on their OWN 20amp Breaker.
I had this issue when I first got mine and I was advised not to use a power strip because the speakers plugged into the strip were sucking all the juice so the last speaker plugged into the strip wasnt getting enough power and kept cutting out. To fix this I was recommended to use extension cables that have a 2 or 3 way split at the end that doesn't run down a line like a strip, and to only have each speaker pair (2 subs or a sub and top) on their own 20amp breaker since each pulls 9.5amps on their own.
Seriously, do these 828sreally sound that much better than the 181's??
out of curiosity i have mackie srm 450 rn and i only use them for in my room, i wanted to know if the jblsrx835p would make a difference in terms of sound quality, also my srm 450s have plenty of bass with out woofers would these speakers have enough bass by them selves with out the bottom speakers.
hitman11782 the 450's have nothing on these.. I won't the 735's and one blows away to of the 450's
835 blows away two mack 450's.. zero contest whatsoever
which is the best jbl series
Do u recommend one 828 or 2 prx718xlf
I didn’t remember watching this video before but since then I own prx tops and prx bottoms and just recently bought an srx 828sp haven’t tried it yet
Stephen Lozada let me know what you like better
Do you use a drive rack or just adjusted the 48hz?
What is used to power these monsters?
Hello please help me i am finally deciding to buy this setup but with 2 way 12 srx with with 1 Srx dual sub
Will it be enough for outdoor use with 200 to 300 people?
Mostly gonna play music pop, hip hop, and karaoke
2.1 system my only concern is the power because u mentioned that its not enough
General Rule of Thumb . . . for outdoor use, 10-RMS Watts per person.
@@g3o5d yes but the problem is so called "RMS" isn't always accurate
@@iNDOmOTO1 "General" Rule of Thumb. It is Not Scientific. RMS is more accurate than Total Watts. It is used because if you go by the Outrageous Max or Total Watts, you will not get an accurate figure. PLUS, you should always look and the SPL.
can you lift this sub by yourself into your vehicle? Or do you need a helper?
Hey I'm new to this. Can you explain what you need to power this sound system?
This system has "Built- in" Amplifiers. All you need is Electricity. Preferably, 1 Breaker per side . . . 15amp
Did the frequency meter drop 10 db around that frequency range and that is why you added that 10 db bump in the EQ?
+Ezra Richards It was 7 or 8db, but a 10db boost "sounded" better to my ears. Sound level meters can get a little wonky at low frequencies and aren't really supposed to be used to measure response, but I was curious.
I see. Thank you for all the valuable information. It sounds like you really know your stuff. I ordered one SRX828SP and it's on the way so I'm so glad I came across this video. I assume you added the bump with a Driverack?
+Ezra Richards No driverack needed, you can use the iPad, Android, or Audio Architect PC software to custom EQ them.
Do you need to connect to a network and load up software every time to get the EQ bump?
+Ezra Richards No, the EQs are stored within memory and can be selected from the controls on the rear of the unit.
Can the speakers connect to a secured/protected (WPA) wireless network?
+Anthony Bowe You'd have to get dongles to connect to the ethernet ports as the speakers do not have wireless capability built-in.
Thanks Eric! That's a little annoying because nowhere in any of the JBL literature does it mention that. Are they still impressing you?
+Eric F Is it annoying that they didn't use Powercon connectors for the power?, or do the "locking" IEC connectors work OK?
These are self powered ? How long does the battery last?
There is No Battery. They are "Self-Powered", not Battery Powered. Meaning they have a Built-in Amplifier requiring A/C.
How hard is it to lift a SRX835P and place it on a pole by yourself?
+Ezra Richards It is a chore. You have to lay them on the floor, plug the stand in, and tilt both upright. Easier is to lift the speaker and have a buddy line up the socket.
Does The 48hrtz hole happen when it's set on 80hrtz
Mine happens when I have it set to SRX top
Not sure to go with the 2way or 3 way? They both have the same db according to jbl?
+Guillermo Vazquez The 3-way will provide a cleaner sound but he 2-way would sound just s good
the SRX series doesn't have a 2 way tower, only the 835. the STX series did have an 825. I'd recommend the 3 ways if you want cleaner sound and less filtering/phasing issues.
@7:00 Thank you... Just...thank you.
YES! . . . Thank you. I don't understand people who surf YT and think they can judge Subwoofers or ANY Speaker system through the Internet. Yet, they're out there by the thousands. SMH
