Saw hedgehogs last night Sean. Lots in our area because we have houses for them, feed them and have made hedgehog highways - which are small holes in fences to connect gardens. 🦔❤

    • @anniemac3075
      @anniemac3075 Před 16 dny +13

We also have hedgehogs visiting, we put water & kitten biscuits out every night in their feeder throughout the year because even if they're hibernating they sometimes wake & need a top up. Hopefully you know to never feed them mealworms as they love them but will develop metabolic bone disease if they eat them & die a slow & very painful death.
There's a lot of misinformation on the Internet about hedgehog feeding so it's important to spread the word. Slugs & snails are a last choice for hedgehogs when there's no decent natural food available to them as these carry lungworm & other parasites & can also be deadly to hedgehogs, especially if their health is already compromised.

I've got hedgehogs in my garden, I see them pottering about on my wildlife camera. I had one at my previous address years ago that used to come in through the catflap ! I know what you mean about not taking life too seriously, as I've got older I've realised a lot of what used to upset me just wasn't worth wasting energy on. I try to do my best to help others (it stops me worrying about my own issues) and keep a smile on my face. Not always easy but I do try ! My nan used to say worry is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere. Thank you so much for all you do, I love your channel. Your new plants look fabulous too 😊

Living in upstate NY I have never seen a hedgehog in person. Coincidentally though, last evening at dusk when I expected to see a rabbit or two out the back window, I instead saw what I took to be a grey fox, or coyote. Either would be very rare to see in this residential neighborhood, though I have seen white tailed deer so paths are obviously possible. It was pretty exciting to me and I tried to take a photo, but only managed one nearly useless blur.

You are going to be so busy planting all your wonderful plants in your Homestead, and it will be so lovely for you to have some time to yourself doing that, I am sure. You can use that straw in the packing on your homestead, so nothing gets wasted, to put around strawberries perhaps? Love the little plug plants from Thompson and Morgan, although they are small, with your love of plants, they should all flourish and grow into healthy mighty plants I am sure. Are you going to put some raised beds on your Homestead? Will be kinder to your knees and back. Looking forward to seeing you enjoying your time there, and getting it the way you envisage. xxx

You can get rid of Marestail, Sean. Unfortunately, it's by using neat round-up.
My Robert was a wonderful gardener who created a beautiful garden at The Cross, in Llanblethian .
A year or two before he died last October, a new neighbour of one of his clients told him that he killed the lot with neat Roundup.
I've seen some of that nasty plant creeping along my cul-de-sack. If it comes anywhere near my house, I'm going to give it a go.
I know you can kill it with rock salt on gravel because Rob and I tested a metre square on gravel, but that's no good for beds and grass.

Wise decision not to go to London. The currants from Chris Bowers look splendid - I bought plants from him in the past. I have planted lots of lavender in my new garden. A mixture of varieties. The French lavender, papillon, has been flowering for nearly three months, the English varieties are just bursting out.
You could put a small solar panel on your shed if you are so inclined.

Hi Sean. Well I'm in bed having a cuppa. You can tell there's not a women around in your house. Couldn't stop laughing. You can use the gooseberries for jam making. Loads of pectin. Just a bit of advice.... If I was you I'd get some friends from your community group to help you get the homestead dug over. If you don't get those plants in within a month they will suffer and all that money wasted. Did you buy a load of lavender plants earlier. It seems to ring a bell. I thought you'd bought about 12. Hedgehogs, I love them! They live here, at the back of the back yards. Not many of them. But I see at least one hedgehog in a year. Not always the same one, sometimes it's a small one, sometimes a larger one. Once I met two of them together, probably a male and a female wanting to start a family.
This is an ordinary neighbourhood, with houses, apartment buildings and a few shops, but it's fairly green, lots of trees and bushes and lawns.

  • @suzannehughes8697
    @suzannehughes8697 Před 15 dny +1

Hi Sean those currant bushes look really healthy, you will have to build a fruit cage on the homestead, or the birds will have a field day, I have got a blueberry bush which every year is covered in berries, but the birds always get them before I do, some really fat birds where I live, I love seeing what you have bought for the homestead, it gives me ideas, we have got hedgehogs in the garden, one trundles down the side of the lawn every night to have a drink out of the dogs bowl, all of our neighbours and me have put holes in the bottom of our adjoining fencing, we call it the hedgehog highway, so they can go from garden to garden, we also have foxes which are beautiful but a bit destructive ie digging holes, which I fill in and they dig more, it's a game, great vlog, but a lot of cleaning up to do!, take care xxx

Well, Sean, you surely do have a lot to cart over to the homestead! I know you will make a great job of it. Thank you too for showing the garage turned garden centre! What a great use of space. Here, when a service station is closed for alternate purposes, the old tanks have to be excavated the land tested and reclamation process completed prior to sale. So at the expense of the existing owner not the purchaser. It is nice to see a new coffee shop/ diner opening up. It shows people ate optimistic about the future.

    Good morning
What a joy to see that an abandoned garage has been able to make way for a new business and also pretty plants. It's really a very pretty place.
I really like the arrangement of your desk and.... Rusty above the cabinet :D
Is that a vine that you bought?
    Have a great weekend

You are the best habit, whenever you have a new video, my husband and I reward ourselves for our work-a-day chores by getting a cup of tea and watching your adventures! I thought leaving the straw around for your kitties was a great idea. In the autumn I bring dried leaves in for my cats (5) to play in. The leaves stay down until they're really worn out (the leaves, not the cats). And I do add fresh ones all autumn. Where we live we have just one old cat that we allow outside, she doesn't leave the immediate yard and she's mostly feral anyway. But the indoor cats love the adventure of dried autumn leaves.
We have clean dried straw in the garage, hhhmmm....
Thank you for sharing your charming life with us. From western New York state, US.

ha ha you were having so much fun with that hay. Made me smile. I open plants outside or on the doorstep to save a bit of clean up if there's spillage of packing or soil. Your plants were certainly well packaged and the gardens will love the hay. The greenery looks nice in your office. You need a pot plant on your desk now🪴.

Always fancied Kew Gardens and also the private herb gardens in Kensington I think. If i was heading for London then i would wait until September as it is very busy. I have been a few times, business and visits. Love this video with the plants and scenery xxx

all the straw can be used for mulch, either out in your cottage garden or at Rusty's farm; those currants would look awesome planted in front of the iron fence at the back there, raise the beds so you're not breaking your back or your knees; love lavender & can't wait to see your lavender pathway
can't wait til you actually start doing gardening at the farm lot
    thanx for sharing

This video is very entertaining Sean, don't worry about cleaning up, just be happy with all your beautiful plants. I'm watching regularly from South Africa, of course we're going into winter so just trying to keep warm.

Hello Shaun. We had a similar site locally, which was finally built on, but not until it had been left for a good many years. Apparently it was necessary to leave it ‘barren’ as it had been used as a filling station previously. It’s certainly a productive use for a disused site!

Another interesting and fun video. You need a couple of horses to come for a visit and clean up your room. Haha. Those plants look so healthy. I love lavender. Just planted some in my garden the other day. Unfortunately I lost all 3 of my 10 year old lavender this spring. No idea why. Our winter here in the Vancouver area was not that harsh but we did have a couple of nights where the temp took quite the dip.Maybe that was the cause. You are going to be a busy guy. But so worth all the effort. Looking forward to seeing your homestead take shape….one day at a time.💕👍🏻🇨🇦

We laughed so much when you were throwing the strew about Sean. Then when the door knock my daft husband said; “that will be the horse looking for his hay”. Daft bugger he is 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
So exciting to see all the lovely plants and fruit trees. I’m still in awe of how quickly everything has come along so nicely.
Those trees will certainly get a good watering if they’re out on the garden now… rain and thunder storms over here in Lincolnshire. Oh well, we mustn’t complain lots of people would be glad of it.
Thank you for another funny & charming Vlog Sean. Enjoy the rest of your evening. The two old farts 😂❤

    Good morning Sean,
The community garden is a lovely place and the cafe looks nice too, very art deco with it's colour scheme! You said it was rush hour lol I've seen more rush in a snail race 😂 Glad you are such a cheerful person, one of the many reasons I watch the video's. Like the poem Solitude by Ella Wheeler Wilcox -
Laugh and the world laughs with you
Weep and you weep alone. I don't blame you for not wanting to chance taking the fruit home because of the bindweed and mares tail I have bindweed in my garden and it's a royal pain in the backside! Take care Sean 💜

Yes excellent raised beds. But unfortunately wood of that calibre is very expensive today. I like that place. You could buy affordable solar panel for your shed. Just a thought ! You should have opened them outside 😂😂😂 Beautiful specimens, lovely and healthy. It’s exciting when you buy new plants and they are in great shape. Gooseberry pie, and custard yum ! You can buy pastry from most supermarkets. Easy peasy pastry. Great video. Thanks for sharing Sean. 👍❤️👍
