Thanks for the shoutout :) glad you got an OB-6, you are making it sing! If you pair it with the Strymon Cloud reverb it’s heaven!
The title of this video is an irrefutable fact. The OB-6 is phenomenal.
Getting a copyright strike on a filter sweep is insane
Don't you know filter sweeps are owned by The Chemical Brothers? :D
Hi There! I discovered your channel searching for audio samples on the CAT Behringher module. Just wanted to say thank you for all the effort you put on these and for the consistent approach and style. You are covering a lot of equipment and it is nice to see a huge range of budgets/tiers worked by the same person.
Keep up the awesome work! Best regards from Amsterdam, NL.
Sebastian
You mentioned getting a prophet. I have owned a lot of synthesisers and the prophet rev 4 has stayed. Can’t recommend it enough.
Seconded!
Tip: Gain staging is real on the P6 and OB-6 (probably T6). Turn down the oscillator volume and the amp envelope volume to 50% / noon and start from there. If you crank them past that you start getting a more saturated or compressed sound. You can get more delicate and dynamic sounds, albeit not by a huge amount, with lower settings.
Also, the OB-6 pairs well with something with another filter, like the Acidbox III. Mine is also getting along well with the Strymon Zelzah and Meris Mercury X.
It’s idiotic that a filter sweep is in copyright - that is like saying that ALL changes in frequency from ANY filter is due a copyright which is like “patenting” the word “THE” used in a most English sentences.
Yes it’s stupid.
Great video. I do see quite an overlap with Prophet 6 - not just in layout - which to me is still a top notch synth.
haha yes that patch 7 is pure bliss. I also spend quite some time enjoying that one, it's truly magical.
That patch makes use of a quirk of the sub oscillator when the oscillator sync is on. It changes octaves depending on the timbre of the synced oscillator.
Also, if you overwrite preset 7, it also exists in the factory bank in 507, so you can always go back to the original.
Thanks for the thoughtful reviews as always. I'm trying very hard to remind myself that I don't need too many hardware synths for what I do, but I am considering Oberheim now that the new synth has been demoed.
As for whether the TEO-5 beats the OB-6...well, it does for me for two reasons. First, I have a Take 5, and I am planning to trade up for a Prophet. I am going to miss many things about the little guy, and the TEO will almost be like it never left. The second factor is the price. As nice as it would be to have several 2K+ synths, I think there's only room for one in my setup.
Like always, everyone will come at this from a different angle. I can see many ways in which the OB-6 could be better for someone who's not me. But man, how amazing is it that Tom is still making such high quality new things and running a company at his age? The man's an inspiration.
yeah the t-5 (and teo-5) mod matrix architecture is very deep for an analog poly. like a prophet 12 basically, btu with even more mod sources & destination possibilities
we have a lot of oberheim options all of a sudden. from ub-xa to teo-5 to obx8 desktop. crazy
Do you want a good sound with great modulation and effects? TEO-5. Do you want a great synth with good modulation and some effects? OB-6.
The TEO-5 is also based on the X8, whereas the OB-6 is more unique (and SEM based). They're all different, and all great - I'm sure the TEO-5 will be great, though they need a module of both Take 5 and TEO-5. I personally prefer the OB-6 over the X8, but I never sought the vintage Oberheim sound as a goal.
There it is! If I had to use one single word for the OB6, it would be "Character". Enjoy!
Wouldn’t it be obiesix? 😊 😉
One of those "to the grave" synths, definitely ❤
As two synths I've been strongly gassing over for a while, would be lovely to watch a video from you directly comparing the OB-6 and Trigon in the manner in which you use them. Hearing the two back and forth in the same context would be most helpful!
I definitely plan on it ! I think only one other comparison exists between the 2.
Awesome, look forward to it!
Wow, I would never have guessed you’d get an OB-6 next. Lol. I thought you’d wait for the TEO-5 instead, but what do I know? My two analog polys are a Take 5 and OB-6 module, and they’re both great in their own ways, they sound completely different but share DNA. I agree the 6 series reverbs aren’t so hot, but the Take 5’s is a lot better to me, but then I love long lo-fi ambient reverbs.
Thanks for the great vid. I'm hovering between this and a Trigon 6; there's nothing out there I can find that does a head to head... Please consider doing one!
Unfortunately I returned the ob6 due to build quality issues. The trigon 6 is the only of the flagship sequential synths I kept.
@@YukiTheSynthDragon oh, no way! Sorry to hear that!
Hard and soft at the same time, has weight but still airy. Lovely synth. Might have to pull the trigger on a used one of these. That TEO is a real looker tho! 😍
hey, i use the launchpad mk3 as my keyboard too. fits in my backpack with my 1010 blackbox
Sounds phenomenal and beautiful this synth. The reverb sounds good too though. Why you don’t like the reverb? Cheers
It lacks much diffusion and decay time and also lacks modulation of the reverb delay lines / filter network.
@@YukiTheSynthDragon Gotcha! Maybe with Nightsky could be even better!
The best effects on the OB-6, to me, are: analog distortion and the digital BBD, Chorus, and Phaser 3 (and sometimes the ringmod).
Love the OB-6. But sold mine becouse it feld a bit limited to me modulation wise and i don't like the preset management on the synth. But sound-wise, it's still in the top 3 favourite synths i've ever owned. The sound is just so good. Once in a while i just like to listen to video's like this just to remind myself again what an awesome synth it is. The TEO-5 is how i like my synths, but sound-wise it's not in the same ballpark as the OB6, you just hear the difference between discrete components and mass produced chips. But yeah, compromises have to be made. Will still get the TEO becouse it still has the Oberheim vibe and i think it will be easier to put in a mix. Nice video!
I sold mine too, and miss that gorgeous SEM filter. I love the character but the limitations of the 12db per octave filter ultimately did it for me. If money was no object I'd buy again.
Noooooo a pro 800 video is needed! No teasing
Curious how it holds up to the Téo 5
In my opinion the best sounding synth that doesn’t cost you an apartment.
It is but the Teo 5 is bang per buck Oberhiem bliss for entry level.
I have never left my DSI OB6.
Now you gotta get the P6 for the trifecta
I’m on the fence for sure.
I am jealous
One of the best! It's good yes but one of the best I don't think so.
Someone trying to keep the used prices from crashing after the TEO-5 announcement
Had an OB6 when they first came out- I ending up selling it-I couldn't really bond with it. Never felt like a true Oberheim. I bought an OBX8-and it feels more like a true Oberheim. I wonder how TEO 5 sounds
It's a true Oberheim. Do you mean a true VINTAGE Oberheim? Yeah, no. The OB-6 is more unique than that... which isn't for everyone.
Get your hand on a TEO 5 and report ;)
the TEO-5 does not replace and is not equivalent to an OB-6
That’s why I plan on having both
