Winterizing Our Unfinished Boat (MJ Sailing - Ep 311)

- As temperatures creep closer to freezing, we need to find ways to work through the cold.
Now that the days are colder, and as soon as the sun goes down after 4:30, we're finding it harder and harder to get our daily work done. Not only is it uncomfortable to work in the dropping temperatures, but our products need a minimum working temperature to be able to cure. So, it's time to prepare the boat for winter.
Taking a drive into town, I visit The Home Depot for sheets of insulation. They won't fit into our vehicle as is, so in the store I need to measure and cut them down to size.
Back at the boat it's time to get them into place. To of the large sheets automatically go towards closing the companionway, and the rest will cover our many windows. The forward peaks are getting completely shut off, so those need specific measurements and some use from our angle finder. The windows on the side of the cabin top are an easy trace and cut.
Once we have the bridge deck enclosed, it's time to pump in the heat! Although we have a few electric space heaters which we plug in for the smaller areas, when we want to get some good heat pumping in right away, we use our diesel heater with a hose going in the hatch of our guest head.
Lastly, we store the components we're using right away inside of a cooler with a heating pad on the bottom. This makes sure they store at a constant temperature of 70, even when we turn the heaters for the boat off overnight.

Hey MJ Sailing! Winterizing your unfinished boat is a big step towards getting it ready for open water adventures. Plus, it's so heartwarming to see Georgie the sea-going kitty doing well after a while. You guys always impress us with your attention to detail and preparation, like bringing your own tools to the store and being mindful of wire routing. Can't wait for the fairing work to be done so you can start fitting out the mechanicals! Remember, every step brings you closer to those open waters. Keep up the great work!

Yall need to outsource 1 special project. Like painting the inside of the boat. Take a brief break. Then focus on the electrical and furniture. May save you 6-12 months in time you could be out sailing.
We're getting to that point where we're ready to outsource the fairing - but I don't know any professional boat builders in the area - if only we were in Maine!! So December we're going to put our heads down and get it done.

I watch you two do the work you need to do and learn how to do things correctly and it's really good to see.
It was really great to see Jessica bring a knife and tape measure to the store and just do her own cutting of the insulation sheets.
I work at a Home Depot and you would not believe the amount of people that come to the store entirely unprepared and unaware of how much room their vehicle has available to them. They seem to think that they can get a 4x8 sheet of plywood or insulation home in their little SUV.
So Thank You for thinking ahead and coming prepared and for all of us in the building materials department at HD, well done!

Accept the building mode lifestyle, don't stress about deadlines and timelines. The launch day will come too, but for now do what you need to do to be happy in the present.
We do enjoy the build - A Lot - but it feels like 2023 didn't bring many changes. Hopefully next year will let us feel like we're getting more done. ❤️
Just a bit of unsolicited advice. Notch the edge of that cooler so the wires of that heating pad can have a straight route out without being pinched. It doesnt take much to raise the resistance of those wires and cause problems. Hopefully now it will not be too long getting the fairing work done and you can start fitting out the mechanicals. Then the open water will be right around the corner.
I agree. Also, be careful using extension cords with space heaters. NEVER leave them unattended,and make sure they’re at least 12 gauge. Just a little advice from your friendly fire investigator.
Some more J&M hacks. Containing heat, supplementing localized boat heat, maintaining a working temperature for boat products.

Having done a boat build myself from a completed hull I'm actually amazed at how much they've done in the time considering they just had a container full of bits to start with.
Keep those window sized insulation panels for after you finished the boat, when you reach the tropics put them back in the windows shiny side out to keep the heat down in the cabin 😉

Here kitty kitty kitty. ;-) I like the warming pad idea. My boat is in my back yard so I just keep my materials in my office.
The insulation must make a huge difference. Come to think of it perhaps insulaton would be help when sailing in higher latitudes and the tropics too. Save on the heatin and cooling. Lovely to see Georgie out for a walk.
Last winter was mild, but with the insulation we were able to keep the temperature around 60 degrees throughout the boat. Hopefully the same is true this winter!
Not a boater. But I got a great common ground chuckle out of you cutting your product up prior to even paying. That’s my wife and I literally every trip to Lowe’s. The cashier folks are understanding… but when you pay for a bunch of extra cut, or the saw guy is just real nice and does a bunch for you, it can get confusing at check out. Keep up the great work and stay safe while you’re doing it. And warm.
Last year I did the cuts in the parking lot while it was cold and windy, and that was not a lot of fun, haha.
Been over that bridge a lot of times. Sometimes it is like you cannot get over it.
In the summer we pretty much refuse to leave the island on the weekends, haha.
Visqueen & painters tape will hold the heat in. Light shines through it too. Actually cardboard does a descent job too.

That was interesting when you went to the Home Depot for the insulation. I picked up the same line of products at the HD near us and I had a very similar experience as you did. The isles were filled with unloaded carts of materials and most of the insulation sheets were all banged up on the edges. There were just enough sheets that weren’t too bad to complete the project I was working on that day. I’m guessing that most of the HD’s in this area (central Ohio) all have resource issues, which accounts for a lot of material on carts and not on the shelves.
I would like to thank you guys for the link to the heat mat and thermostat. It works better than the one I was using. I have 2, 1 for sprouting and 1 for resin. Your diesel heater is a great idea. Will it heat the whole boat?
have you thought about investing in a torpedo heater that will heat that tent in no time and a better heat for the inside
There are certain things (like kerosene ) we can't use to heat the interior because as they burn they leave a film. Maybe next winter once surfaces are finished, but not at the moment while we're still trying to get fairing and paint adhesion.
Jessica, it's an El Nino year, expect a lot of snow.

Cold times, are average for the time of the year. Snow is regular, I am expecting 8-10 feet this year.

I was really hoping this would be our last winter in Maryland, but I think there's still one more to come. Just gotta keep pushing along until one day we're in the water!

You guys R funny. To HD on the day before and then just covering the windows. I think maybe you just spray foam the whole interior of that big tent and move in. Yea. The lounge area could be just "underneath there" and a kitchen area in one of the corners. Course then you might have to rig up a drain for the bathroom set up inside the boat. Yea. I could see that, a shower where you have the most progress in the boat then just a drain it outside. Aaand then a wood stove for keeping warm. Just have some cord wood delivered. A wood stove in the lounge area and another in the kitchen area. Then just start with the "OFF GRID" videos. Tell everybody that you've moved to Alaska. Yea. All good. So much fun. ~~~. I had actually had grand plans that we'd be far enough along on the build to be able to move aboard this winter, have one area completed, and then work on the rest. I was so far off. 🤣
So, when is your plan to get the boat in the water and then finish off things you can do while floating? Sure seems you've been at it longer than planned? How much additional up grading has been added? I have enjoyed watching your boating adventures over the years.
We learned from our last boat that the entire project needs to be finished before splashing, or we'll get lazy about the rest of it, and the remaining projects won't get finished until we sell.
Right now we're loading at a splash date of summer 2025, fingers crossed!!

diesel heater - hint have another pipe from inside as the air intake - saves heating freezing air - RV's do this - more efficient - also run heat pipe down low as it helps with air circulation - you know it makes sense
They - the heater manufacturers - do recommended pulling in fresh air and not recirculating stale air. This being far from air tight, that may not be such a huge issue. But on our aluminum boat, it really needed the fresh

You have just completed the world's biggest chilly bin/Esky/Igloo (not sure what you call them in the US).

Just wondering - why did you choose the foil-backed poly-iso insulation, instead of extruded polystyrene board (XPS)/pink? I've used quite a bit of the poly-iso to reflect relatively high temp coal stove output, but everything else in the house is either XPS or rockwool batten for passive insulation.. An interesting characteristic of poly-iso is that the lower the temperature goes, the worse its insulation property gets.
It was cheaper per sheet for 1" at Home Depot, and it also feels better looking at the reflective surface vs pink board :)

We work seven days a week and our vacations are attending boat shows - which is work as well
What's the name of the unit and how much diesel does it go through?
It's a 8kw Vevor unit I purchased of Amazon. Since it arrived badly dented, they gave me the money back and didn't want it returned. It burns a 10th of a gallon and hour, but it's usually not running hard for us.
