    Hey Dixie! My husband and I watched every episode as soon as you posted them. By the time you finished the pct, we were geared up and hitting the mountains for weekend adventures. This summer we're doing a week long section of the jmt. You are a huge inspiration to us. Can't thank you enough.

    I've lived in the Pacific Nw for better than 60 plus years and have worked and played outside alot of those times and I have always been more inclined to have a reasonable amount of wool. I have backpacked and hiked also, The wool always managed to keep me warm and dry. So I realize that wool may be too heavy for some, but I did ok with it even carrying a 50 pound pack. Just saying I haven't done any thru hikes like you all have. I have really enjoyed the videos and the info that you all have given, maybe I'll live long enough to do a thru hike also. Anyway I admire how you all get thru those adventures
    Thanks again Rob from Oregon

    Here in Ontario, mosquitoes and black flies are a real problem. About 3/4 of the hikers I meet along the trail use a headnet to keep their sanity. I use a lightweight, compact one made by SeaToSummit that I quite like. It easily fits over my baseball-style cap with enough length to tuck under my shirt collar. I bought it several years ago for about $5 CDN.
    For the same reason, I prefer full length pants. I like the ones that zip off above the knee. I get mine for about $40 CDN on sale at BassProShop.

    I live and hike in the Pacific North West. Good rain gear is essential. I don't like water proof gloves because they do not breath. But Zpack Vertice Rain mitts are great with in the cold glove liners and in the summer no liners. Or if warm enough just wet hands.

  • @thetommantom

    I prefer wool over cotton over synthetic. Advanced removable hair. A good rain jacket or a base layer with a t-shirt one can dry while wearing the other or in the cold layers can add up. Down in 40 degree rain is the worst! Actually in between like sweating in a down jacket in 40 degree rain is the worst. I like a base layer, t shirt, hat, neck gator, gloves, then a vest and/or sweater with a rain jacket. Redundancy or multi use items are the best. I keep a down jacket just in case my layers get wet or it's not enough. I have a down hat to sleep in or if I'm too warm to put on my down jacket. I like synthetic in the sun, or down in the cold dessert nights. The sierra or around Seattle isn't dry definitive snow. Over time the water in the air coats all the tiny frills of the feather. Wool is more breathable allowing the heat from the body to push the sweat out to keep it dry (Under a rain jacket with pit zips) rather than locking in trapping all that wet air as loft.

    A lot of people don't understand that cold at night in the desert. I grew up in the high desert Central Oregon. Most of the time we were off the grid. And most nights we froze ice in pans about an inch deep. And it would still reach 80 degrees the next day.

    Dixie, Thanks! I have 3 of the PFG shirts for hiking in also. But what I like most is your comment on price and using what works for you. I still use a BDU Gortex jacket as it repels the wind and rain, great pit zips to regulate heat, and its almost bomb proof as far as hiking in it all day long and getting snags or rips.

      Do a few 2 or 3 night hikes before going on a big one, to test out your gear. I carry a very thin windproof piece such as the patagonia Houdini - for light rain and wind it breathes much better than any shell. And dries quickly.
      Long johns under shorts are also good for cool to cold weather.

I've been trying to figure out what I'm most comfortable hiking in, and I just found a pair of quick dry shorts at Walmart that are super comfy and have built in spandex underneath (yay for chafe prevention!)... I might actually take those on the PCT! Have you heard anything good about the baselayers they sell at Walmart? I think they are called Cuddl Duds. Trying to find little ways to save where I can!

    I was told not to sleep in my down jacket because the sleeping bag can't do its job as effectively otherwise. The heat gets trapped in the jacket vs the sleeping bag. I was told to drape it over me like a blanket on the outside of the bag instead. Thoughts?

  • @TDSudduth
    @TDSudduth Před 6 lety

    Great overview! It’s more fun to read about equipment than to get out and do training miles. :) Do you know what percentage of miles were done in shorts. It seemed from your videos perhaps about 80%, and I think you were preserving heat and core energy with upper layers and then modulating body temperature with your legs - in the same way that we stick out a leg at night to cool, half too hot, half cold, but overall just right. Other members of your group seemed to mostly wear pants.

    For that extra base layer of warmth she wish she’d had, anything that fits next to the skin works well: synthetics or marino wool are good options. Minimal weight but huge boost in temps you can handle.

    Hi Dixie. Planning a thru hike on the PCT with my daughter in 2020. I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos and really appreciate all the great information. My biggest concern is socks and I'm hoping you might be able to offer me some suggestions, especially since cotton is not recommended. I am allergic to wool. I'm also a knitter, so I plan to knit some alpaca hiking socks for the colder parts of the hike and for sleeping. What do you recommend for the desert part of the hike? Alpaca is a lot like wool and is even warmer than wool, but I don't want to wear alpaca hiking socks in the desert. I could knit with acrylic, but I think that would be worse than alpaca, because it wouldn't whick away the moisture. All the hiking socks I've seen online are made with some amount of wool. Any suggestions?

      @HomemadeWanderlust  Před 6 lety +1

      Charles Hudson I started with them on the PCT, but chose not to continue after 70 miles or so, I think. They just didn’t do much for me. I think it has a lot to do with gait. If you notice debris in your shoe they might help. I don’t get a ton of debris so it was just an extra unnecessary step in dealing with the gaiters for me. Can’t hurt to try them though!

    Cold in the desert...you're right about that. One of the coldest nights in my life was in the desert around Kandahar. A summer day patrol unexpectedly turned into an overnighter, and I hadn't packed any warm base layers at all. Spent the night cold to the bone.As far as base layers, even since retiring I've stuck with the stuff I used in the military towards the end of my career, first because I can't afford the ( often ) expensive name brand stuff you see in the thru-hiking videos, and since it works much better than they stuff they gave me early in my career, I figure, why change to something I haven't used....and the current issued stuff is often made by name brand companies anyways...and for cost conscious guys, you can buy the stuff surplus to start out or as you wear out individual pieces.The silkweight level 1 and midweight level II ( graphic here: www.mcguirearmynavy.com/Genuine-GI/GI-Clothing/Gen-III-ECWCS/ )combined are all I need to stay warm most days/ nights, and the level II's even have the finger holes that Dixie loves( which I agree with her on ). And who cares about being fashionable if you're warm. And it doesn't weigh a lot, and if I destroy a piece of the ensemble I'm not heartbroken because I didn't spend a lot on it in the first place.....

  • @Liberty_Tree
    @Liberty_Tree Před 6 lety

    A neck gator/warmer is a very useful piece of kit. Today for example while hiking I slipped on some ice and ended up dislocating the last two fingers on my left hand. After pulling the fingers back into place, I filled the neck warmer with snow and used it as an ice pack for my hand. That enabled me to finish my hike. Very useful!

I'm plus size and don't really feel comfortable in shorts (part self consciousness part chaffing issues). I usually do all my long distance hikes in sports leggings and that works great for me. • @jackrubin2711
      @jackrubin2711 Před 6 lety +5

      Keep in mind that two people work on this channel, and you have no idea what financial obligations they have. Would it be better if she just let gear companies give her gear and control her content? That's the more lucrative alternative and she could easily do that with a channel this big. I for one hope she doesn't do that, because it would be hard for me to trust anything she says. If people like the content enough that they want to support it and make sure she has every chance to make more she'd be dumb not to give them that opportunity. I'm sure people who voluntarily donate gear don't think it's greedy, and they're the ones actually losing money. I just couldn't imagine being the kind of person who would publicly complain about how other people spend their money or make their money when the only way it affects you is it gives you the opportunity to watch videos for free. And you're actually complaining on one of those free videos! However it is that you make your money, it comes in one way or the other from someone else spending their money.

    • @lindacook8322
      @lindacook8322 Před 6 lety +3

      I think there is no greediness to have a wish list. If you dont like them, then simply don't participate in helping her. She puts out excellent information and if you weren't interested in her content you wouldn't be here. I find her worth valuable and these videos help and entertain many. Frankly, you dont know what her expenses are and what she gets paid and its no ones business but hers. Shes's lovely and worth it in my humble opinion. Lets get her wish list on line and public so we can enjoy her adventures with her. Shes carrying all of us in that backpack. Thank you Dixie!

      I'm not complaining. Just calling it how it is. She's blocked us from viewing how much she makes on Patreon because it's gotten to a point where it's a lot. Before that it was around 3,000/month. Many people don't make that in a whole year, and she's getting it just from her fans. I don't have an issue with that. But throwing in wish lists, paypal and bitcoin is a bit greedy. Almost 40K/year from Patreon is more than enough to do what she's doing.

      There's a level of greediness when you make a years salary off your fans and still ask them to buy you things

      Again, its no one's business but hers. There are no limits in this life except the ones you put on yourself...you dont have that right here to limit her. No one has that right but her.
