Hey y'all, Dixie here! This channel began with my journey of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT) from Georgia to Maine. Since then I've documented the Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, The Camino de Santiago (French Way), Pinhoti Trail, Florida Trail, Foothills Trail, Kilimanjaro, and several shorter hikes. Most of my backpacking adventures involve long distance thru-hiking, but in between hikes I post informational videos that include the most basic backpacking info, my mistakes, gear reviews, and thru-hiking tips. I hope documenting my backpacking journeys and sharing everything I know gives you the push you need to get out there!
Most new videos are uploaded every Wednesday! Happy Trails :)

I love sharing my hikes, but a lot of the footage from my videos is left on the editing floor. In the past I've tried making "JUST HIKING" videos with only the raw hiking footage and none of the narration. But I feel like this channel isn't the best place for raw hiking videos like that, so this will be the last JUST HIKING video on this channel. Instead I've started a new channel specifically ...

13 Tips To SAVE MONEY Every Backpacker Should Know
How does everyone get the time off of work? I have a pretty great job and could make it work financially, but I'm not sure how to approach my boss with "Hey I need 4 months off of work."
Curious about the phone call from Garmin to your mother. Some folks have their phones set to forward calls from numbers not in their contact list to voicemail. Does Garmin make this number available so people can add it to their contacts?
You don't need them for extra weight.
Dixie, it's cool you're trying hammock camping again. Although your new hammock does seem to be incredibly uncomfortable. Hope I'm wrong. :-) I totally understand that you wanted something as light as possible. But in this case... I don't know. You need a hammock long enough and wide enough to lay dioganally and as narrow as possible. Otherwise you'll be a banana with your back hurting. Personally I use Warbonnet Blackbird XLC. I know, it weighs around 600g by itself. But it's great, I love it. Also I want to try out Dream Hammock Darien. I heard great things about them. Plus you can pick all the materials, colors, dimensions yourself. They have a cool calculator to find out the best measurements of the hammock based on your height.
!!!! It's "We!" NOT "Us"!! And my IQ is Only 48!!😮😮
Good thing it’s not the moon 😂👍
This should be # 1 in the search results...... Keywords Help
I am struggling to come up with any advantage of a hammock over a tent. I must be missing something.
Oh man. I've been way out of the gear loop, especially the hammock loop. That's crazy that you put together a full kit for about a pound. And, with exception of the tarp, it's not really more expensive than the Eno gear that I got years ago. I'm going to check out hummingbird and see what their warranty is like. I'm always leery that super light gear won't hold up to wear and tear, especially that bug net. I'm with you, though. I typically resort to ground sleeping. I'm always anxious that I won't be able to find trees of the right girth and distance apart to hang a hammock.
Dixie likes LMN Sweet T.
NOLS is the best first aid wilderness course you can take.
Great video. I have recently (last 2 years) switched to hammock camping because sleeping on the ground became increasingly unpleasant. I think I absolutely get better sleep in the hammock, but like you, I didn't factor in weight enough with my first purchases. Mostly Eno, which are great products, but heavy. So I appreciate your research and look forward to seeing what you think of it.
This was wonderfully informative and I appreciate your insight, as well as your humility.
Theres a BABY coming! YAAAAAY! that means backpackin with a baby vids! Super vun!
I have seen UFOs twice in NC. Once right over my car with the moon roof open, on I-40 between Morganton and Old Fort, and once off to the side off 26 between Hendersonville and Rutherfordton. Those experiences made a believer of me, especially after I reported them on the national UFO reporting website and saw each state had hundreds and hundreds of sightings! Has anybody hiking the 3 seen them? Just really curious. Keep looking up!
Ugh my heart breaks watching you be so hard on yourself for acknowledging you needed help. People being scared to ask for help is what leads to worsening conditions and death! That’s what the in reach is for, that is why there are SAR teams. This is what first responders are for! I hope you know you weren’t stupid, and you did the right things 🖤
Most ”lifetime warranties” are not for Your lifetime, but for the expected lifetime of the item with normal use.
Without much experience on the trail but having spend a few weekends and even sleeping out at 10 degrees Celsius with supermarket bought equipment, the focus you put on weight and not on utility will not change your experience. And for trekking long periods of time and sleeping poorly, it's a non starter for me. To each his own, but instead of doing your shipping based on weight maybe reach out to someone more experienced in hammocks and get the help you need to start it right. Even the angles of your straps are not good for a comfortable sleep! As for the setup it takes all about 30 seconds per component once you get to practice. Tarp, net, hammock, some lining under the tarp to store other things on case of rain. And comparing a transparent tarp with a tent when it's your choice what to buy and complain on the privacy is a bit exaggerated 😂 pick a bigger tarp 4/3 meters and it bigger than your tiny tent. You can even stand under it and only have your feet up to the knees in sight, if even that. I'm no expert but doing things with someone that knew how to do it properly I've enjoyed it a lot more than you have. I'd reluctantly pick a tent over a hammock especially under rainy conditions
One of the reasons she’s preferred tents over hammocks is the weight, so this is more of an experiment to see if she can get the weight of the hammock setup comparable to her tent and still be comfortable enough to justify using it in the future
What's your current favourite backpack? The ULA or the new teal ZPACKS I see in the back? 🙂
I’ve been hammock camping for 8 years now. Best way for me.
My Oboz were the best thing I've ever worn for really rocky trails because Im 76 now and the pudgy pudge on the bottoms of my feet is gone. The bottoms of my feet now bruise really easily, and my ankles are weaker now too, so the Oboz just covered both those issues really well. I haven't worn 'em since, but can't bear to get rid of them. So comfy! Big toe box. Purchased at the hiking store beside the RR tracks in Black Mountain, NC. Great little store, BTW !! if you're in that neck of the woods.
Beautiful.🙏
Just hiking. Awesome. Absolutely awesome.
A bivy would be okay for desert hikes once you are into summer, because out in Escalante Wilderness during Spring Break, there was ice on the puddles in the mornings and it got really cold once the sun went down. Really cold.
Oh my goodness! Fancy Mae is getting big! I didn't expect that! I thot she was full grown at the begining! Sending her love and a cuddle!
Thanks for sharing. Very informative.
Nice! Shug out there in Sector 7...Awesome fella: The multitalented, self proclaimed King of Lollygag. Yeah: things the womens hair ties at Dollar General have saved me a few times.
I just saw this and girl I cried right along with you. I understand the way you feel, and don't understand why people have to be so negative. You are always so brave and I continue to admire you more and more. Also, I haven't watched your videos for a while-the algorithm does funny things. But I just saw you're pregnant! Congratulations!! I am 13 weeks along today and it's silly but I'm thrilled I'm pregnant at the same time as you! 🥰
You mentioned a cheap tarp as an option towards the end. A good middle ground might be an ENO dry fly ($75 as of when i bought mine) and a $5-10 walmart ground cloth. Less than $100 for that easy for decent quality. A decent bug net really shouldn't be much more than $20.
Maaaaan i had to boil my water once and we only had enough fuel for the food we brought. So we put the pot on an open fire.....i can confirm that hickory smoked water is nasty stuff!
Id be done taking a dump in the time it took to rig up that dookie swing.
I hope when you think about all you have accomplished since starting you adventures that you realize that you have become an amazing videographer along the way. Well done and the new channel is great.
Tape the pillow to your head. It will always be there. Boom. Fixed the issue.
Hey Dixie! So glad to see you're giving hammock camping another shot! I got started backpacking because I bought a camping hammock and while watching this madman by the name of Shug teach me how to set it up, I also started watching his backpacking videos and thought, well huh. That looks fun and I already have the hammock... So yeah as many have said before Shug is an immense wealth of knowledge for all things hammocking. But my most important take away I got from the man, was that hammocks are immensely personal thing. Since you are essentially wrapping your body in your shelter each different one may or may not be comfy for you. Try a lot of different set ups in a lot of different pitches. Good luck in your journey and may you find the perfect night's rest!
I'm with you I love my mini Sawyer 🥂
Dixie you look amazing!
My light weight recommendations for hammock camping which I use includes a Dream Hammock - Darien (hammock); Hammock Gear - Dyneema Fiber Standard Tarp w/Doors (mine is Camo pattern) with MSR - Mini Ground Hog Stakes and Dutch Gear - Reflect It Guylines and Fleaz Titanium Hardware with Zing-It Loops; Dutch Gear - Amsteel WhoopieSlings 6' w/Titanium Whoopie Hooks (times two--one for each end of hammock); Dutch Gear - 2" Kevlar 3.1 Straps and Huggers (to protect trees--connect to WhoopieSlings); UGQ - Bandit (Top Quilt w/950 PF down) and Zeppelin (Bottom Quilt w/950 PF down); 2QZQ - Underquilt Protector using Argon 90 fabric (mine is Camo pattern); and either a Black Rock - Down Pillow or Trekology - Ultralight Inflating Travel Pillow v2. I also use a mesh single snakeskin for my tarp and a small Tyvek sheet with four titanium Sheppard hook stakes for a ground cloth under my hammock.
Lay diagonally and it will flatten the hammock out more. Much more comfortable!
Does anyone know an approx. cost for a trip like this? Thanks!
Perfect. Too many are doing gear videos and over editing. This is the niche keep it up. 👍
Wow Hocking Hills is about 10 min. from my home. One of the most beautiful parks around. Thanks for all your videos.
Eeeeeeeeeeee she's having a baby! Oh man that kid is gonna have adventure running through their veins. So happy for you.
I’m just the opposite. I have been hammocking for years and just decided to get a good tent and pad. Fingers crossed, I did not want to be a ground dweller but I am gonna diversify and give it a shot to compare. My base weight is sub 9lbs with my hammock and it still weighs more than some tent setups, but to me the comfort is worth a little extra weight. Congrats on the baby Dixie!
I’m a little baffled by your choices here. I really don’t think that hammock is much of an upgrade from the ENO. You really need an 11 ft hammock to get a flat lay and sleep comfortably. I don’t understand your decision to buy a $69 hammock with no structural ridgeline or integrated bug net but spend a large amount of money on a dyneema tarp. Also, that underquilt is essential to a good night’s sleep. That looks like a 3/4 length underquilt you have in the video which I also think is a poor choice. A full length underquilt would probably have been a much better choice. But now that you have the underquilt, I would probably use it and put a sit pad under your feet for insulation. I see John from Trailheadz has reached out to you. I would suggest reaching out to him or Dutch at Dutchware to get you hooked up with a hammock that’s going to work comfortably. Personally, I think you are focusing too much on weight and too truly be comfortable in a hammock set up there is going to be a compromise of maybe 1/2 a pound. I have a few hammock camping videos on CZcams. Not as slick a production as yours but you may want to check them out. Now, all that said, I bought a tent over the winter after 7 years of hammock camping exclusively. Why? I’m not sure myself. Good luck to you and happy hanging !!
thank you!
Just for the record you’re still not going to be happy with your hammock set up more than likely. I think you might reconsider if you look at some of the other vendors that sell complete how many bundles wise you might be happier with a bundle package hammock.
Consider looking into: superior gear, or Dutch ware gear or dream hammock bundles.
Also if you are concerned about privacy, consider getting a camouflage 5:02 Dyneema tarp with doors
I winter car camped a few times and realized I had not changed my clothes or showered and got used to my own stink. I definitely made sure to clean the privates but it didn’t matter when it was just me.
Wtaching this video, I really wanted to get that bug out of your hair! What helps me get the best sleep is hiking hard during the day. I then stretch before going to sleep.
Saving this for when I need a pleasant nap. I'm near the end of my first trimester (12 weeks) and as desperate as I've been to nap I haven't been able to actually doze off when I try. This seems like the right kind of calming video to get me there....
I support everything only that I would pick a bigger tarp just to keep the privacy and wind breaking just like tenting provides...
