In this video, I forge a simple snake candle-holder from 5/16 round bar. Forging snakes is a good project for a beginner blacksmith, as it is a relatively straight forward process, that lends itself to personal expression. In addition to candle holders, this snake motif can be used to create towel bars, toilet paper holders, coat hooks and a whole host of other potential products. As this is a fairly quick process using little steel and utilizing minimal tooling, the beginner Smith can make sale-able items to sell at their local renaissance fair or craft show.
If you are interested in purchasing the hammer that I use in these videos, you can find it here: bit.ly/picards1500swedishhammer

This is an awesome project I'm a knife maker looking to get my hands in on some art style smithing that requires more hammering than grinding! Thank you so much for the wonderful video and idea! Going to make one of these tomorrow!

This is funny but up until this moment I didnt realize I don't have a pair of tongs to hold that small of round stock. I'm going to make some now.
My favorite part about the craft. If you don't have something. You just make it.

I been making knives for 6 years and this is something that gets me out of the norm. I have made a few items here and there as need arises. But love the options that can be done with hot steel.

Love your videos. Would make a small critique here: a snake would never coil that way; tail weight on top. It would limit their strike capability. Head end mass will always coil on top.
