    Retro Rules! Modern is superficial and weak.
    I like the immediacy of the game loading up right away, no updates, no connection to the corporate machine.
    Retro games had colorful art direction, and the music was more focused on catchy melodies rather than the ambient sounds of today.
    Also they were made by smaller development teams so they were kind of like independent films. Modern games would use the same people to just do qa testing, or render hair and skin pores all day. You got a more complete experience that is not gutted out for microtransactions, and battle passes.
    Games were also difficult back then because the players demanded it to get their moneys worth. To overcome Shinobi or Castlevania is to feel like a hero.

    When she said in the beginning that she prefers to only play games once and that's it. She ruined her whole argument. Who wants to buy a system to buy games they will only play one time and not want to play it again. Gamers played and replayed games again and again. We are still playing the games today. That says a lot in the benefit of Retro gaming.

    • @RetroRivals
      @RetroRivals  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I think the problem for me is that we have so many games that the idea of playing anything more than once (Retro or Modern) means something in our collection will never get played so I typically only ever play a game once. The only exception to the rule which completely destroys my whole argument is high score games which tend to be mostly Atari. Those I do play more than once because I'm trying to get a higher score. Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it

    • @rmt74358
      @rmt74358 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@RetroRivals That is a good argument, but if you play a game more than once, that means you have games you enjoy so much more. I love the last of us and I would play it more than once, but it's more that I would play games like Super Mario Bros. 3 far more, or say any fighting games, especially with friends. The games made that more options available, but the classic hits NEVER DIE

      I don't think your counter to her argument is an objective counterargument. You make it sound like the vast majority of people replay games. The insinuation that one only opens his/her wallet to purchase a game is based on if they will replay it later and that doing so, it's unique to retro games because they are that good is a stretch. Lol.

      Just discovered my psp go. Finally fulfilled a childhood want and jailbroke it. For the most part I just have games downloaded on it for now but once my new backplate comes in I’ll open it up and replace the battery and storage capacity by installing an M2 to SD card adapter. It’s the last piece I’m currently waiting for so I can finish upgrading the hardware. Can’t explain how excited I am. I can play gran turismo for psp again ON a psp with upgraded battery life and 128 gbs of storage. I also played Persona 5 when it came out and it’s the first JRPG I’ve come to fall in love with. Currently playing Persona 1 on my psp. Personally retro is killing it right now especially since my internet is garbage atm.

    I can't believe Scott didn't mention modern games being broken at launch. Cyberpunk took a year for them to iron out all the bugs. Retro gaming is the best. Absolutely valid point on Modern games being broken at launch! That's the biggest piss off right now as well as the digital push. Definitely going to explore Xbox versus PlayStation and Sega versus SNES. That's pretty easy for us because we are on either side of the line with that one. As far as physical versus digital Scott and Alex kind of already did that, but it makes me think that we could Branch out with other creators and have a versus with people that might think differently than we do. I've gotta chime in on the games..
    I just wrapped up my 7th 100% playthrough of days gone... modern perfection. So modern games can definitely have that repaly value, with that said it's definitely rare. Modern games that make you want to play them over and over are an anomaly. As for retro I've beaten pikmin over 20 times as well as super mario rpg, plus dozens more. Retro games have a charm that modern games rarely can capture. This was a great video really enjoyed it

    Even though I also have Retro in my game channel, I also prefer modern gaming. I love old school, retro games but I think modern games are so much better when it comes to graphics, online play, and innovative and improved gaming mechanics.
    I also agree with your argument about why retro games were replayed so much, Jen. They made them hard as balls because they were essentially 1 hour long. You needed to get your money's worth.
    I also will typically beat a modern game once and move on because there are so many awesome games to play (modern and retro at that) that I can't keep replaying the same game. The backlog struggle!

    1. Loading times were introduced by modern gaming. (There were no loading screens on catridges)
    2. Moder games get finished 2 years after updating like about 200gb.

    Ooofff, this is a hard one, I grew up on Retro game's, as I've said on posts on Facebook, my first game console was not one but 2 in the same year for Christmas, either 1979, or 1980, which was both the Sears Brand Atari 2600, and Mattels Intellivision. That being said, well I do love my retro consoles, I also love modern, but retro consoles paved the way for today's modern. All consoles over time break down, but modern seems to break down way more often than retro, you can drop an N64 and will still play great, you drop a modern console, and breaks more easily. Yes the graphics are have come a long way since the retro day's, and with modern you now have voice actor's that help flesh out the character a lot more than retro, but retro still has a very nostalgic feeling to each character that you invested alot of imagination and love for those characters, I have no problem reading every text as it comes onto the screen, I also won't skip over cut scenes on modern, cause you never know what's going to be said, or that it might help with the story on how it's played, I know that might not make a lot of sense, but I love watching the cut scenes, but only if it's a new scene that I haven't seen before, if I die in modern game's, and it repeats the cut scene, I will definitely skip it, but if it's a retro game I almost never skip the scenes where you're reading text on what they say, almost never, sometimes I do. I do play more modern console games than retro but from time to time, I will still play my retro games. I would say in the last 5 years, I started playing retro game's again, only because of a friend of mine who I met at UPS where I work ,he got me back into retro gaming, before that it was modern only, but still never forgot about retro gaming, as that is where I got my start. I'm a Gen Xer, born in 1971, and grew up with playing arcade games before playing on consoles, but like I said I play more modern game's than retro. I will admit one thing, I do not like where the next Gen consoles are heading, I do not care for digital download, as I'm a physical copy gamer, than digital gamer. When the PS6 does come out, I will not be buying it, unless they continue with physical copies, which sadly we all know they won't, sad because nobody owns a digital copy, they are only renting it, I'm not like the kids today, who will beat today's games or finish today's game's in a week or less, and don't care they don't own a digital and are only renting it, cause in their minds they don't care to replay a game they beat 5 or 10 year's ago. That's another reason I love retro consoles, cause their all physical game's, and may beat a game, and 5 to 10 year's later, want to play that game again so yes, I love modern gaming, but still love my retro game's

    • @RetroRivals
      @RetroRivals  Před 2 měsíci +1

      My son and I were actually having a conversation on the next gen consoles just a few days ago. At the point when modern consoles go all digital, I'm absolutely done supporting them. That's the greatest part about Retro gaming is that we know those carts will work and they'll always be ours.
      I'm not a PC gamer but at the point when we go all digital then I'll likely just start supporting steam and pick up what I have to play for my gaming PC. If I didn't already have one for editing videos then I likely would just skip new games entirely in the all digital era and be happy with what I have.

    • @EvilMyers
      @EvilMyers Před 2 měsíci +1

      @RetroRivals , I totally agree, I'm not a PC gamer, never have been, yes I did play some pc game's like Oregon Trail, and Pac -Man, on the computers at my elementary school back in the day, and my friends dad had a PC he mostly used for work, he did have a game called Snooper Troops, which was ok and all, but through and through I'm a console gamer. I think it's sad that the next Gen consoles will be digital only, which in my opinion is a huge scam, because of what I said, you don't own digital you rent them, and I stand by this statement, so I'll be continuing to collect retro game's, from cartridges to disc game's, i.e PS1,2,3,4 and 5, I've never owned a GameCube nor an Xbox, but who knows that might change, kids of today and the future might think we are crazy for not supporting digital download games, but they will never know, or understand what's it's like to own a physical copy, unless their parents are retro gamers, and educate them on physical copies. I too might think about buying a Steam Deck, and or the Asus ROG Ally, and play game's on emulation, maybe, who knows, first I need to but myself a Nintendo Switch, and start collecting those game's

    haha Jenn with the retro Turtles shirt when fighting for modern! classic.
    It's true , I would most likely play a retro game over and over compared to a modern game, Scott definitely gets that point! It's that style of quick plug and play , whereas modern is more of a story telling experience , I could play like 5 cartridge retro games in the time it takes a modern game to fully install on the system with all the patches.
    I agree with some of the games being repayable such as The last of us, since it's not a super long game, but also that first came out on ps3, which is 15+ years ago so that counts as retro now. I know some will argue it's not but 3 generations back is definitely retro , if a kid was 5 years old when it came out and now is in their 20's it is definitely retro.
    Points against certain retro eras like ps1/ps2 was the damn loading times , those consoles are sometimes hard to play now., and their memory cards lol.
    One thing that was so cool about retro is we used to get different versions of a game on different consoles for example turtles in time /hyperstonen heist, aladdin , ps2 wrestling games/ gamecube wrestling games etc..
    I actually like the N64 controller, the controller I never liked was the Gamecube controller lol, I always hated the plastic cheap feeling trigger buttons. For me, the SNES controller is the greatest controller of all time and changed how everyone else made controllers. However I loved the ps3/ps4 controller.
    I agree the charging sucks for controllers , but the wireless aspects are awesome.
    I agree it's cool that modern consoles can play retro inspired games. Also got to give the point to Jenn for the accessibitly options for people. I would have to argue with Scott there are a lot of modern games that people love, Persona 5, Yakuza like a dragon , RE evil remakes etc..
    I got to ask Jenn how often do you play your Xbox series x? hahah, and I say this as someone who hardly plays his.
    How many of these modern games will even work in 10-15 years ? Also back then the games that were released were complete, you didn't have to worry about patches and worry about them removing stuff.
    Nailed the head over the Woke stuff, this whole Sweetbaby inc crap is annoying. I say let the developers make what they want without outside interference.
    great video, but that best part is we don't have to chose, we can enjoy both, as I know both of you do. For me if I want a quick session of gaming under 30 mins, I prefer to play a retro game, in and out otherwise I do go more modern. it was also nice to know we actually owned the retro games, the whole game was on disc or cart , whereas now the discs are mainly just to check if you own the game before downloading it.
    Either way I say it's great we all have a choice to game how we want to game for now.

      What a thoughtful comment. You know how much I always appreciate that. The concept of what is retro and what is not is so hard to pin down. 15 years makes sense. We are somewhere between 15-20 ourselves too.
      Retro is an easy pick up and play. Totally! Gotta agree on that. The save states have it for me though with modern. It makes it so that I can play for an hour. That's my only opposition there.
      As for how often I play XBSX.... 😂 Well, not a lot because if I play an Xbox game and very few are exclusive to that console then I play it on the One and save the exclusive games for that system. So, not that often 😜🤣 Fair point!
      And yes, at the end of the day just making the time to have fun gaming is the most important thing. No matter how you do it ❤️

    Cool argumentative conversation starter. Personally Scott won the argument but I feel Jen was on the right side. One of the games discussed for loving modern games was the last of us. One of the coolest part of last of us was the fact it was a ps3 game upscaled to modern tvs , think about all of the retro games coming on ps1/ps2 NES/snes/n64 being updated to today’s hardware because it’s better and more convenient as well. That’s my argument for modern gaming. I’m weird I know it cause I love sports gaming and I have to love the old retro games cause they generally don’t port to modern consoles due to licensing so it’s a win for retro. There is also some odd ball old retro games that no one would ever even have known to play today .

    I will never fault a game/console for being limited by the technology of the time. In 1991 Super Mario World was peak graphics, just like the last of us was when it came out on PS3. So, I think you can't compare them head to head. I will say this as my only argument. When I think about games, like what are critically the best games of all time, what games do I want to play this weekend, what are my favorite games, When I GO TO THE GAME STORE what's the first section I go to? The answer is Retro games.

    One major thing you guys missed that gives retro an edge is that modern games constantly need patches, especially day one. I think retro has much more variation and unique games which keeps things interesting. There is always a new gem to find. Modern games are all rehashed ideas again and again. Last of us, last of us remastered and last of us remastered again. How is a 11 year old idea with a new coat of paint modern? Not even to mention the current generation. I have seen desserts with more variation than the current generation games. It’s either live service or indy(which face it is modern retro) with some double AA games that are worth your time. Except for hell diver 2 my ps5 is pretty much a ps4 emulator at this point. What is awesome is my xbox one x with all the upgrades on all the xbox and xbox 360 games through backwards compatibility. Retro Consoles are a whole lot better. You have more options. You can play with a normal controller, they have wireless controllers & best yet that everyone seems to forget you can play with Turbo controllers. What's even a lot better now is that they sell Ever Drives to play any game & have 100's of games on a SD card to play that on your original console.
    Also with Retro games, if a game is too hard, you can now play them with save states. Or like back in the day put Game Genie Codes or codes that are in the game if you want an easier gaming exp.
    Modern gaming: Too much system updates, got to wait to download you game 20 min to 2 hours at times. No cheat codes what so ever to make the games easier. You can only play with 1 type of controller, wireless normal ones. Then the games themselves are way too long 20-100 hours depending on what games you do play.
    I will replay Golden Axe & many of these types of retro games over & over because they are 1 hour or less. The Last of US 2 which is a great PS4 game, I've played that & beaten that only once for a 30 hour game. No way am I replaying The Last of US 2 or any modern game like God of War, Uncharted, Red Dead Redemption 2 the Assassin Creed games over & over again.

    • @RetroRivals
      @RetroRivals  Před 2 měsíci

      We have a few everdrives and they are amazing. I would never have been able to play Sweet Home without it because it's a homebrew and not a game we ever see.
      Now just to add fuel to the fire, would an Everdrive be considered modern? Are we essentially using it to modernize retro gaming?
      Controllers are a tough one. There's more than one controller for modern systems. We have many for our switch. Defender, 8 bitdo, Switch Pro and Hori Split pad.
      Cheat codes were taken out in favor of choosing difficulty level so same thing kind of.
      Can I just say how happy I am though that you loved The Last of Us 2? We both adored that game and it got a lot of undue hate.
      I really appreciate your comment and you make a lot of good points. Also, Golden Axe is a great game as well. Scott and I played it co-op together, beat it and had a blast doing it!

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@RetroRivals Yeah I think we are modernizing retro games when we play with Mega Everdrives because they make the games Super easy by giving us save states & even more Game Genie Codes to put in.
      Lets take away the Everdrives & I will still show you how much easier a retro games is compared to a modern game.
      2 games to compare. Contra vs Cuphead.
      2 very hard games right? How do I make these games easier?
      Well for contra I can use a Turbo controller. That makes it a lot easier because now I can fire more of my shot continuously.
      I can use the 30 lives code I input from my controller. I can also use a game Genie with it to give me unlimited lives etc.
      How Cuphead easier though? Oh yeah that's right you can't. Yeah I beat it. It was really annoying. I think my death count was something like 500+ deaths. Don't remember the exact number but it was really high.
      I can use these examples for other retro games. Retro gives you more options for gameplay & easier too.

    Online gaming & storage space are the only things that are better on Modern consoles. That's it. That came out with the PS4 actually to have a virtual library. Before that when I bought Earthworm Jim HD I had to keep that on my console. Deleted it & now it's gone forever because they lacked a cloud system in the PS3 days when you bought games digitally.
    Online play very important. So I can play a hockey game at home vs my friend who is at his house. This saves a lot of time. Or you play a online coop game. Talk through a party chat on PS4 with Head sets. Nintendo not the same for whatever reason. You got to use your cell phone along with the systems to play online if you want to communicate to each other which that is really important. You don't have to but it's better you do.
    Comparing this to couch coop or vs, I would say it's worse. If you can I recommend going to a person's house with 2-3 friends to play video games together all in 1 room. You'll play on 1 system 1 tv & you won't have to worry about lag.
    Since as adults we don't have time to hook up with friends because of the different work schedule I say online is a huge part of gaming now.

    Modern wins and it isnt even close.
    There is no way people will convince me that there are better retro games than TLOU Part 1&2, Control, AW2, God Of War, Returnal etc...
    I do like Retro, but I must stress, that if there is no nostalgia tied to retro, then its just okay.
    When I hear folk sayin SuperMarioBros3 is the best game of all-time, it baffles me. Sure it is there opinion, but take nostalgia out of the mix and its a good platformer.
    Prime example, MetroidDread is head and shoulders above SuperMetroid. But Super will always be ranked higher due to nostalgia.
    Controllers is a modern win, all day long.
    Woke culture is just a thing we gotta live with sadly. I recently heard someone say somthing about Lev's character being force in TheLastOfUsPart2...I did not feel that because there is a story behind that character and they way that she is portrayed & the struggle to get where she wants to be.
    Another good point was when Scott was talking about chips lol, like, there are sooooo many games coming out these days and STILL we see cookie cutter channels statin "bUt ThErE aRe No GaMeS oN Ps5/XbOx SeRiEs" madness.
    Story and atmosphere is a modern win easily as well. How many times were we saving princesses from castles back in the day. Yep, modern wins story & atmosphere.

    My view of what is retro is a bit weird but in a good way i think. I felt PS1 graphics were bad back in the 90s. This why i guess games dont age for me. I never felt i played a modern game until the PS4 in 2013. One and PS4 modern for life! PS3-360 was the golden days like a mix of retro and modern. So what do i prefer... i like modern hardware more but i do lean more to retro games. Right now playing FFX on PS4 😊.

    The one killer for modern gaming is, if not micro transactions, it's the fact that as the servers shut down say goodbye to your digital games cause retro will reign with access to our carts and physical discs that will end up outliving multiple consoles with forgotten lost games, while the retro will live on through new generations to be remembered....mic drop.

    Updating controllers--ugh...I hate when they move the "X" button to a new place because of an update. lol
    I think modern games don't have the same sort of hold for two reasons; the market is so, so, soooo saturated with games versus the 80s and 90s. And modern gamers are so quick to get into the next thing (possibly because of that saturation) and in this society there's a severe lack of patience versus decades past, so time simply isn't allocated to these modern games.
    Retro games definitely needed a higher difficulty because of shorter play and also as a holdover of arcade mentalities (though, obviously, at home it's not about sinking more quarters into a machine). BUT, on that note, the more you had to replay a retro game, either to get better at it or simply for fun, that's time spent playing THAT game and not a competitor's game, so it was a marketing ploy.

      I think my biggest problem with retro games is my own mindset. I play every game to finish it so if I got to get good to do that it feels frustrating. And if I got to use a save state to do it, it feels like cheating.

If we talk about controllers, my favorite one is now the PS5 one. I can play for hours without having any discomfort at all! But since it's wireless, the battery needs improvement for sure! I wish it could have the battery life of the Switch Pro controller, and it would be perfect! Yes, some retro stories were amazing, like Skies of Arcadia, but some modern games have amazing stories like A Plague Tale Innocence and Requiem (probably my favorite story ark in the modern era). As much as I like retro games, I can't remember the last one that made me feel like Witcher 3 at the end. And yes, please get rid of the wokeness in video games already! Very well said Dan. One really can't exist without the other. Retro is the beginning and I'm thankful for that. Some of my favorite games are retro. I could play Castlevania symphony of the night everyday of the week but that's an exception to the PS1 rule because it didn't suffer the terrible polygon graphics.
      Of course! I love modern so you'll get no argument from me there. I still haven't played Witcher 3 but the time sink it's going to take to complete it is what scares me. Tell me I have to play it that it's a must play and I'll make sure to get around to it at some point.
      Thanks so much for the great comment and sorry it took me so long to get back. Hope you're having a wonderful start to your weekend

      @RetroRivals Never apologize for the speed of your reply. Keep in mind that some channels don't reply at all, so getting one back is what I consider a bonus (also a sign that the channel cares about getting comments), and I'm grateful for them! Yes you must absolutely play Witcher 3 abd no you don't have to play the previous 2 to understand the story (but I would still recommend it but wait for Witcher 1 Remake as the 1st one is quite old and only on PC, unless you want to play it on your old / new pc). And even though it is a time sink, it's totally worth it and play the complete edition that had the 2 expensions as they are really good! And it's rare that I recommend DLC!

      @RetroRivals  Před 2 měsíci

      Absolutely. The "middle ages" of gaming for lack of a better term were some of the roughest in gaming history for load times and graphics. Some great games came from that time but the load times would almost take you out of the story.

    Hardware - Modern win, because they are adjusted for inflation cheaper and can play games from every generation.
    Storage - Modern wins, because not only do modern have storage built into the system, they have cloud storage capability.
    Controllers - Modern, are we really considering an argument for this! 😂
    Graphics - Modern win overall but Retro on a CRT, well they win on depth of blacks.
    The Art of Games - Retro, hands down, so many unique games with innovative design choices.
    Oh, Alan Wake 2 is getting a physical release. Digital only is a long way off 💪
    Despite Jenn winning this argument, and I'll redress the balance in an upcoming video.
    I'd still ditch Modern over Retro 😂

I've even taken a swing at modern pc gaming although our son insists I play with keyboard and mouse which is super hard for me. I think the true winner in this one is just the gamer.
