Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein.
The band had eight years of regular chart hits in the United States, where their music was played on top-40, easy listening, and country music outlets, and throughout the English-speaking world including the UK, Canada and South Africa. Their music spanned several genres, mostly novelty songs and acoustic ballads in their early years, though their greatest success came with their later material, mostly consisting of disco-influenced soft rock, which the band recorded under the shortened name Dr. Hook.

Lyrics:
Elvis he's a hero he's a superstar
And I hear that Paul McCartney drives a Rolls Royce car
And Dylan sings for millions
And I just sing for free
Oh everybody's makin' it big but me
Oh, everybody's makin' it big but me
Everybody's makin' it big but me
Neil Diamond sings for diamonds
And here's ole rhinestone me
Oh everybody's makin' it big but me
Well I hear that Alice Cooper's got a foxy chick
To wipe off his snake, and keep him rich
And Elton John's got two fine ladies
And Doctor John's got three
And I'm still seein' them same old sleezoes, that I used to see
Oh, everybody's makin' it big but me
Yeah everybody's makin' it big but me
I've got charisma
And personality
Oh how come everybody's makin' it big but me?
(What's wrong with that?)
(I don't see nothing wrong with it Ray)
Well I paint my face with glitter
Just like Bowie does
And I wear the same mascara
That Mick Jagger does
And I even put some lipstick on
But that just hurt my dad and mom
And everybody's makin' it big but me
Oh, everybody's makin' it big but me
Yeah everybody's makin' it big but me
They got groupies for their bands
And all I got is my right hand
And everybody's makin' it big but me
Everybody's makin' it, makin' it, makin' it
Everybody's makin' it big...
Ronja´s Dr Hook Channel love these fuckin nut Bars! So fun to watch!🤣😂🤣
@@randyjennyrobbins4869 they had their sad songs but this one is a fuckin hoot lol -Im 69 retired Navy and Im as crazy as they are lol ......
i love that line "I even put some lipstick on but that' just hurt my dad and mom..."
Randy&Jenny Robbins gotta love that ending! lol
Glen what about the line about Elton having 2 women? He’s gay. lol
These men should be in the hall of fame. The spirit of the song is strong in them.
They never will be. They supposedly "don't meet the criteria!" What a crock of bullshit!
These guys were so underrated as musicians I mean just watch the guitar solo
Guys, how did it happen, I'm a simple Russian girl and I don't understand anything about country music, I don't understand English well, but I smile and dance when I listen to their songs?😄❤️👍
Check out their others!!! Cover of the rolling stone........Shel S wrote these tunes.
hi , do you wanna marry me please?
@@mildwillow American Country music is there for all of us to enjoy
@@skullfoot thanks for recommendation, I've listened to this song and others, and I absolutely love them all! 😍 This band is not popular in Russia, but I listen to it with pleasure! I think the guys from this band are just crazy in a good way! 😄 I would like to attend their concert!
P.S.: sorry for my English, I'm trying my best 😄
@@mildwillow Your English is fine. The lyrics are so special. A lot of 70's rock n roll references. If you dont know them, check them out too!! WOW Russia. Dr. Hook. finally got there. hahaha
This planet is almost 5 billion years old and we are here for a blink of an eye. And here we are living this all together. Rock n roll saves me.
what makes doctor hook so unique is, not only are they very talented musicians & song writers, they can also have a good time on stage & laugh at themselves
I was listening to the little radio one night and heard; leslies mother said, Leslies sleeping, Wait, Leslie was the girl I was in love with. Anyway, my introduction to Dr. Hooks Medicine band.
Drugs will do that to you. They said they were heavy into it at this time.
Agree, absolutely hilarious performance but also a bunch of highly talented musicians. By the way, the cover art of the LP album this one's from - "Bankrupt", 1975 - is amazingly funny and their facials and ppses are just priceless. Both on the front and rear side. :)
i'd say thats cos they were smoking the happy hemp ? ;) xxx regardless they are legends !

I love that this is actually a kinda depressing song if you listen to the words, but it's just so much fun I'm smiling by the second verse!
My late dad use to play dr hook in the car on way to school his favourite one was everyone making it big but me ,and cover of the rolling stones ,i got your cds and when i had my son he use to hear dr hook loads ,hes autistic had speach problems bit knew the words to most dr hook songs by the time he was 4 ,he still loves and sings dr hook songs now hes 30
Absolutely positively on the Cover of the Rolling Stone ah man yes
Brilliant !
Elton John's got 2 fine ladies. Never has a single lyric aged a song more than that.
Almost as aged and out of place as Elton John's cover of "to be young pretty and black"
Elton John was once previously heterosexually married. Did he always know he was gay?
@@SirChristopherGorton exactly my point. Never has a dingle lyric aged a son more
I thought the same thing. Lol
@@SirChristopherGorton You haven't heard Elton John's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" have you?
I just sing for free. Ive got charisma and personality love it 😅
How have I never heard this before?!?
Buds, I like this!
I will be 60 in June I grew up listening to this
I'm 71 butt kicking years old and not one day goes by that I don't listen to at least a half dozen Dr. Hook songs. They keep me going. I have kept a candle burning in Ray's honor ever since he passed over to the next world. That's a long time, but he meant that much and more to me.
These guys used to be partying at my sisters house ..when I was a kid..... OMG...
Drunk, stoned, and hopped up...and still their music lives on. Proof that kick ass music never dies.
The day these guys met up with Shel Silverstein was a day that magic was born.
Absolutely 💯 amazing 👏
You got it!!
Gotta love Dr Hook. No band can make us bellylaugh in one song, bring us to tears in the next, and long to turn the lights down with that special someone in the next. It's Dr Hook & The Medicine Show. Bring it on. We love it al.
omg beautifully said !

You are so right
Absolutely well said sir.
One of the most under-rated bands of all time.
Yes
💯
Love these guys ,"all ive got is my right hand "" lol i saw them live n worth every penny
Making it BIG! DR. Hook is my Dr!!
I'm 63 ...I still love these guys....EXCELLENT......👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
They sound better goofing around than most bands sound trying their hardest.
Anti-establishment strikes back!!! True rock n roll!!!
It’s takes a lot of work to make this seem spontaneous. This is showmanship, not goofing around.
That was the show. They were just brilliant musicians - you gotta get tight before you can get loose. :D
Good he loves 💘their music!
@@kidsmoked True dat
Bill just steals the show pushing Rik out of the way. And when Rik jumps on his back is simply hilarious!! LOVE this one ; )
What a nice haircut, discreet, simple, not flashy, not at all sophisticated, does not attract attention and is appropriate for very hot weather
Someone told me weed was a "phase" I would grow out of. Now, at 62, I think they were wrong. This music is also here forever.
James Gardiner ; at 55, brother, I have to agree. The
vidoes are from before there was such a thing as "videos". This was all just called "footage". The behavior was not scripted-exactly the opposite.
This sort of footage reminds me of old friends and when times were better.
All in moderation. The only thing that matters is you're happy, content, with your self. And you help your common people and your community.
Peace and love from a 24 year old fellow from Denmark. The world is not completely fucked yet (:
Keep on tooting. Wingnutted
computerfist - WRONG. Shove your socialism, which is NOT social in any way shape or form, so far up your ignorance as far as it will go. These boys represent personal freedom in its purest form. If life is getting you down, don't overload your neighbors with your problems. Solve them yourself.
My sweet Ray NEVER grew out of his weed "phase." Good on him.
It’s like this song was written specifically written for Rik. His delivery is FLAWLESS, and how he tries so hard to regain control of the mic from Bill fits the overall tone of the song so well. ❤️
To call Dr Hook unique is an understatement loved this group of characters
64. I’ve been a devoted fan since Sylvia’s Mother. I was privileged to see them live in the 80’s. A very talented band. They make you laugh one minute then cry the next with their beautiful ballads.
They're just having fun- love it, don't you?!
Yesss, everybodys making it big but meee .-)
Dr. Hook was, is and will always be the most hilarious band coming out of the seventies. Always loved them.
I like hearing Dennis laughing. The talent on this stage is unbelievable. Awesome job guys. Thank you for all your fun music
These guys were always having fun. I really believe they genuinely were.😎
They were... it's called lots o weed 🤣
If that’s all it takes I’m gonna score me a couple more lids.
There’s some 70s terminology for you.
Except the guy playing the tambourine, he looks pretty bored.
Shaun O'Leary
That’s part of the act. He looks bored until the end when he tries to take over the microphone.
Yes they made it look like a ball to play together and I will date myself and say I remember that lingo✌️
I was a teenager in the 70's and Dr hook was a part of it. It was great how I miss that decade!
I'm 42 years old and Dr.hook has been a huge part of my life...they remind me of my mom and what great memories...
Don't you just love these guy's.?
You can't help but to love them!
Ray Roberts yes, I do
Haha, they're so ironic in their attitudes. I love them xD. Greetings from Denmark.
there is no way you can not....
Absolutely!!!! :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
You gotta love the fact that they never took themselves too seriously.
Ronja where would we listen to great music without you? Thank you.😊👍🎶
If ever a band was higher than willie Nelson in a helicopter, it's this band!
This Band was so great, original, funny, and krazzzy that I cracked up every time that I saw or heard them. I so much enjoyed them. RIP Ray. You were loved.
RIP Ray Sawyer. Thanks for the beautiful harmony on Sylvia's Mother.
Ray Sawyer Bio: Ray Sawyer February 1, 1937, Chickasaw, Alabama, United States - December 31, 2018, was an American singer best known as a vocalist with the 1970s rock band, Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. Though primarily a backing vocalist and occasional percussionist on congas or maracas. He was also the uncle of the vocalist of Wild Fire, Zack Sawyer.
Go to the angels.
As a member of the younger generation I wish more bands would act like this and not take themselves so seriously. I've been a fan of Dr. Hook for almost a decade now and they, almost more than anyone else I listen to, always put me in a great mood. I could tell they were having a ball doing this music, whether you thought it was good or not, and in the end that's what it's all about. Being selfless for your audience.
its wonderful to see new gens are finding Dr Hook, they were ahead of their time , n this proves it, i wish more were like them, but then they wouldn't be as unique as they are :)
Well I mean back then bands got away with being more height than a 747. Now days they can’t get away with that. It’s clear they are blitzed out of their minds and really can’t grasp reality. And there is nothing wrong with it they were an awesome band I wish I had the chance to meet
Shel and Dr Hook, the greatest combo ever!
Had the opportunity to work with these guys. Great people, very chill. Even the crew was laidback. Just a fun loving group of guys that were very caring towards their fans.
Dr Hook has earned the honor of being at the top of the list of my "Wall of Fame "
God I wish I could have seen these guys live they seem to have so much stardust in there shows absolute quality I love all there songs from the funny ones to the love songs there will never be another band like them Dr Hook and the medicine show take a bow
Saw Dennis live last month, man still has it. Captivating
Get it Rik!! I love this song! ❤️
I've never seen a band like that in my life. so much interactivity between them
The tamborine players look on his face is priceless man. It cracked me up. It looked like he was saying " Are you f*cking kidding me?"
jlschult45 lol..yeah..he looks pretty depressed over the truth in this song! Lolololol
Delighted!!!🌝
God they had it all and they did it all .we are so lucky to have grown up with Dr hook
You are so right. They are amazing
Agreed, I have to say some of my favorite performances from them are the ones on Shel's houseboat.
Fun bunch of guys making fun entertainment , funny or serious slow song dr hook comes up big, i saw the boys live back in the 70s was great show
Jeg synes dere gjør folk glade. Hilsen Åse, Kristiansand, Norge

What a class act these guys are. Saw them in Liverpool late 70's from memory could have been early 80's.
Your,'re so cute. Reminds me of my French teacher. Everybody 's making' it big but me. Love from Åse, Kristiansand, Norge
Always liked this group from when I was a child and my mum used to play their music in the house still sounds just as good now as it did then.

My new favorite band that I just discovered that I'll never see
Thanks Ronja.
Once again lm enjoying a flashback to the 70s in Manchester seeing a masterpiece of Dr Hook , fantastic time of my life and memories forever, thanks Dr Hook.
Bravo !
Billy Francis is the greatest, the look on his face before he takes
over is priceless, The dance he does in the Yodel song is beyond
comparison.
The world needs more Billies then we may not take things so
seriously.
Anyone else notice how when he says Elton John's got two fine ladies, he holds up three fingers...then when he says Dr. John's got three, he holds up two?? Lolol!! I love these guys!
I’m still laughing at Elton John’s got two fine ladies
Every Time I took my son and nephew camping or fishing, we would play this song and sing along. Great song. Great memories!
Its the first time i hear this song - LOVE IT
This is just awesome. Nuff said. Folks with actual talent just having fun doing what they do best.
I dont think there will ever be a band like Dr Hook . Steel Panther tried n sorta did okay, but you guys !!! are the true legends !!!! always and forever DR HOOK!
It's really sad now most of the band at that time are all died now but there music will always love on RIP RAY SAWYERS
Isn't Rik Elswit, who did the lead on this song, alive? If he is (I'm posting this at 2:36 am ET on July 2, 2020), he'll be 75 next Monday. Jance Garfat, the bassist died in 2006 (age 61 or 62) in a motorcycle wreck, and of course, everybody knows Ray Sawyer has passed.
@@TheBrooklynbodine Rik is alive and well living in California last I heard.
@@aroush77 OK, thanks.
I believe Dennis Locorriere is still alive in 2021.
Dennis and Rik are alive. Billy, Jance. Ray, and John Wolters are all deceased. There are other former members who are living and some who have passed on as well.
Agree with bzzzap .......... these guys goofing around sound better than most " bands" today.
Love This Lyrics and Rik Elswit
RIP Ray Sawyer. I loved you guys since I was a kid listening to my mom's albums. We saw you in concert in 1999 in Las Vegas.
This is my new favourite song.
These guys just had so much fun, would have loved to have seen them live
Toby Vermeend I was very lucky to have seen them back in the day at Wembley
That was fricken fantastic.
Up at 5am just too wake and bake and listen too The Medicine Band . Now why can't I just make it
This is such a fun song and funny to watch! Rik is sooo cute and this is the only video that I've seen him singing in so far. Such a funny ending with Billy taking over. lol Btw, Elton John was married for a few years in the 80's and yes, to a woman. :) He was saying he was bi- then decided he was really gay. Just a little info, 'cause of so many remarks about him! lol
Southern Kat mmmmmmm how do you know....
Always just the best with the finest in class. God bless you Dr hook.
I love how much they enjoy themselves makes the music even better
Love this group. These guys are nuts 😂

Amazing. this video makes me smile so much.
Billy Francis was one of the most talented and gentlest members of Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show.
No matter what tune it is of theirs, my heart smiles and my soul shines just a bit more ! Every time . That is a real good thing, in this, oh not so sure world. So grateful....
