This week Schony747 presents 70 year old B Class Diesel Locomotives on a night run towards Ballarat and Melbourne. It's a brilliant show of speed and sound as these 70 year old former Victorian Railways veterans run through Central Victoria with a loaded grain from Charlton. It's a very still night and the train can be heard from miles around the filming locations. SSR now has 3 operational broad gauge B class diesel locomotives running around Victoria - B75, B76 and B80. It looks like combinations like this will become more common as SSR transports more grain here in Victoria.

👍👍👍I'm an old Man now, but the sound of the VR B's in the 50's was what started my lifelong fascination with trains. And the sound has not changed. 👌
I grew up with these diesels as well. It's the reason why I have more of an interest in diesels than steam.
The EMD 2 strokers would have to be number one on any Hit Parade! I always loved the B’s, Esses and T’s and their variations from the old VR and it will be a sad day when their days are finished and we have to thank SSR for prolonging the lives of them for sure, hopefully there is still some years left in them! and a top job there capturing them! Fantastic! 👍
The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to keep these girls running is apparently pretty amazing. It must be a Labor of love by SSR down here.
Great sound both the locomotives and the video.
There are very few things built 70 years ago that are still in use today. If you were involved in the design or manufacturing of these great machines you would be incredibly proud that you were able to build something that lasted so long. I have a two year old son and I hope to one day as he gets older take him and show him the sight and sound of a B/S as it roars from the platform. There's nothing else quite like it.
The Classic EMD design in all locos back then right through to the 1970s had quality written all over it.
You are correct, bloody brilliant sound. May the EMD B,S,T,C,X class live on forever. Wind direction and location can have that symphony go on for an eternity. 👍👍Thanks for providing the chance to hear it again

the sound of the C will probably live on for many decades as the VL L BRM are pretty much the exact same sound as they're all gt26cs
Awesome video! It is good to see the B classes on regular freight trains! They seem to be doing well at there age.
They seem to be running pretty well. I'm sure there is alot of work that keeps these locos running.

Yes, these are sounds from my childhood in Dimboola listening to the B's and then S's pull the interstate goods up the incline out of Dimboola towards Adelaide or the whine as the applied brakes and compression coming down the incline to Dimboola yard. Of course, The Overland, used to have the B's pulling it when we caught it at 4am in the morning on the way to Melbourne. I am sure I heard this train when it passed through Howitt Street crossing the other night.
Those are my childhood memories as well! I've got good memories of The Overland through Ballarat.
@@Schony747 My great uncle was Station Master at Ballarat late 40s and early 50s but he passed away too young. Oh he was also a Victorian Railways Commissioner too. His name was Richard Floyd Stanistreet. Yep, have memories of Dad jumping out of the still moving carriage at Ballarat Station and doing a sprint to the Tea Rooms to get an order in for brekkie.

hi, greetings from england,great video, these locos and myself are the same age !used to have a Triang Railways model of this loco when i was a child in the 60s,anyway wish we had these locos in england,
I had a Hornby model in the same Blue and Gold VR scheme. I must say the Deltic was a pretty good British Streamliner!

Absolutely brilliant you caught the essence of EMD early V16 567 at its best.
567 cubic inch per cylinder about 10 litres x 16 = 160 litres x 3 = 480 litres of brute, 2 stroke EMD power.
Yes I didn’t count the P class.
You need to run a tour group just holy solely on chasing these old 567’s.
You would have Yanks & Canadian’s plus plenty of Aussie jumping on your tour bus.
Would love to hear them attack Gooseberry Hill.

Plenty of time in between locations because of track speed. I wouldn't speed in any case as I like the freedom my car gives me 😀😀

I liked how GM weren’t keen on the double ended cabs but the VR CME went to Detroit to explain it to them. I think his name was Ahlston.

Another great video. I wonder if it is possible to see a video of the inside of these old locomotives? I assume that there has to be somewhere for the drivers to relieve themselves on the longer journeys.

With the wisdom of hindsight, was the conversion of ten B class to A class worth it?
Did some develop cracks in the underframe?
You could argue it wasn't a complete failure as the project actually allowed VR to see the short falls which eventually led to the N class order.
Pity there's no footage of the consist climbing Warrenheip Bank!!!
After dark so I didn't bother. Check out last week's video with S312 leading T363 and B75. It sounds jyst as good!
I assume since those B class engines are double ended they can be ran from either end. Do they have one prime mover or 2? Also, Austrailia seems to have some very talented "taggers:. You could join them and tag a couple while the train sits still (lol).
One prime mover and controls at both ends. The talented taggers were actually commissioned by SSR to paint the cars. The cars were going to get tagged anyway so you might as well have something professional.

I figure you left a couple of very short clips in this video by accident. They were in the Ballarat sequence.
The green signal at Ballarat should have been a tad longer.

For memory the "B" were 1500hp, when the "S" came on the scene they were 1750hp, what did they make the "A" class what hp were they?
According to Wikipedia, 1500hp for B, 1810hp for S, and 2476hp for A.
What was listed below is correct. If you look up Wikipedia on the Web, you will find all info for all classes if you do a search on each individual loco class.

So many engines just for such a small wagon rake...there were not even 20 boxes ....
In India, the smallest rake is close 65 boxes usually hauled by WAG Class Electric locomotive (only one) say 5500HP.
For a change the grain train had more than enough power.
B75 is the coolest B class, but the crews hate her so much.
Like a tram! Some are great and some are pretty ordinary. What's the gripes with B75?

I remember the 421 class climbing the grade during the night at Marrickville back in the 60s it was fascinating to listen
The sound of the EMD 567 engine has never been equalled.
The 645 may come fairly close, but the 567 is heavenly.
