MTB to Gravel: Does it work?

- This is my budget project bike during the covid lockdown. Converting my 2013 Commencal El Camino 26' to a 27.5 Gravel bike.
Most of the parts convertion was straight forward.
The only challenge was to get the cable pull ratio between brifters and mtb derailleur (10 speed) to work. A Tanpan or Shiftmate would of made life easier but its too expensive.
Hope you enjoy this edit...

VERY nice. I did a similar conversion about a year ago - only I stayed with the 3X front ring and was able to find brifters for it! The key was sticking with the cable actuated disc brakes.
Nice bike! I also just did a dropped bar MTB, but with suspension fork and XC tires. It was definitely a fun bike to ride...having my bad idea realized. Who cares? as long as you have fun, right? Riding dropped bar on the gnarly trail makes you look like a boss. Keep up good work and stay gnarly ;)
Hi.. Thanks man.. Yeah.. Definitely make if more fun..
Wow what a transformation.. I think i will convert my MTB into hybrid. Nice share. Keep safe.
Commencal Elcamino. Excellent bike!
Nice work!!! It looks like that bike has great geometry for this type of conversion. If you can, give us an update on the +'s and -'s. Love to hear your thoughts after a cpl of months in the saddle. Happy pedaling!
Thank you sir.. Yes its great, really loving it.. Its just a wee bit on the heavier side, later on will upgrade to lighter parts.. Happy pedalling to you too..
So nice brother
Support from Philippines!
The newest trend is having a front suspension on gravel bikes! Maybe a Rockshox at the front would like fine...?
I think the gravel bike really suits countries like Lebanon with terrible asphalt roads full of potholes. I think gravel bikes from mountain bikes makes commuter bikes relevant and reliable on terrible roads
i have the same fork as you do, when i converted my mtb to a gravel, although i kept my altus and used a corner bar instead. shimano mt200 brakes. continental gravelking ext 38c tires. still not for berms or large mountain rocks but im still able to go to trails when i want to.
Nice.. I'm considering of getting a corner bar too so i could use back my hydraulic brakes and the deore shifter.. But it seems to be quite fun riding drop bars.. Hehe
Napakaangas🔥rs always
Hey Dude, pretty nice conversion

is it a 27.5 MTB bike frame, and does it mount well with 700c wheels?
Hi.. Thanks.. Its a 26 mtb frame.. Fits a 27.5 well.. Haven't try a 700 yet.. But it should fit as well
Hi! Did that Prolite brake adapter help with the shifting? Thanks!
Hi.. Yes it helped.. Not perfect but it does helped shifting all 10 cogs.. Without the adapter shifted 8 speed only..
you've got Sensah Quantum. It works with Sram rival groupset.
If you have gotten Sensah Phy, it would've worked with your current 10s, without the adapter, but with some sort of inline barrel adjuster.
Owh ok.. Thanks for the info

After about 3 years the last Keurig stopped working czcams.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf initially was able to unblock, however eventually we couldn't fix. That one was a replacement unit sent by the manufacturer after we had problems with our very first Keurig. This works fine (lol, at least for now) however I didn't realize the water reservoir was so much smaller than our prior unit. With 2 people having one or two cups of coffee each morning, it seems like I'm refilling it daily. Otherwise just happy to have the convenience of pod coffee vs. making a morning pot.
Hi thanks for the video, do you think the geometry is good? is it comfortable to ride? thanks
Hi.. The geo is good for gravel riding and yes its comfortable..
If youre planning on going on this type of build. Theres a few problems that you might be trade off for you.
First, if you put the same size fork ie; 26er fork on 2er frame, bottom bracket shell would be much lower. Also means higher chances of pedal touching the ground.
There isnt much road type shifters that would fit your mtb drive trains but its posible yet it has its own issues. So i suggest stick to the flat bars.
If you want to put larger tyres on it in an attempt to make the bottom bracket higher, there wont be much of a clearance on your rear wheels.
I built mine just as the same. And im pretty satisfide on it. Theres a lot of issues but it works just fine, but i suggest you get a roadie if you really need one.
Yeah man.. Agreed.. Converted to 27.5 and lovin it.. Shifting ain't great but i can live with it for now, maybe later on change to a corner bar and go back to the mtb shifter.. and I do miss my hydraulic brakes.. But for now i'm enjoying the drop bar..
With a couple of oddball exceptions Shimano road and mountain rear derailleurs all have the same cable pull, the fly in the ointment is the front. Different cable pull between road and MTB plus different seat tube angles make it tough finding an FD to work with an indexed road front shifter. I did a drop bar conversion on an '88 Karakoram with a 3X8 using Sunrace brifters and Shimano 105 road derailleurs. The 105 was for a tube angle close enough to my GT that it worked, it works great in fact. Of course if you switch to a 1X front then all you need is an RD with enough range for your rear cassette. I'm running 175mm crank arms and 26 X 2.1 tires, pedal strike has never been an issue for me.
@@hezrie.ghafar7410 hey, they do have hydraulic options on drop bar types. Not sure if its gonna work on your bike.
Sram 10 speed mountain and road shifters use the same pull. Would make matching easier. Should work with any SRAM 10 speed mountain derailleur, or even older 9 speed ones, like X9 or similar vintage, depending on cage length.
Thanks for the info.. Will try it then
@@hezrie.ghafar7410 Yeah, working on my own old MTB to gravel-ish bike. Bought new SLX 11 speed shifters and derailleur intending to do it in two stages, upgraded drivetrain for now, and then road bars and shifters at some point in the future.
Once I got the road shifters, I was gonna move the SLX onto an older MTB that has SRAM ten speed. Then decided, hell, just do it now, put the SRAM 10 speed on the new gravel build, and then I won't have to worry about getting a Shiftmate or Tanpan to make the cable pull work. Just need to get a set of SRAM ten speed road levers. Probably use an old road stem and bars I have for now(it's a threaded steerer), until I decide whether I want to use a threadless adapter and 31.8 bar and stem. Probably will have to, just to get a short enough stem.
@@achn2b Nice.. Giving new purpose to old bikes is so satisfying.. Testing out what works and what not is the best part of the build.. Getting new ideas and sharing infos.. I'm still working on my bike and i hate using the shiftmate to be honest.. Its good to know that sram works as i only had shimanos at the moment.. Hope to see ur build..
Hi bạn.Cho xin link mua bộ chuyển đổi litpro
Mate, nice bike!
How these calipers work with dual road shifters? They have different pull ratio, aren’t they?
Thanks man.. Calipers worked fine.. Just the rear derailleur needs a converter coz of the different pull ratio
@@hezrie.ghafar7410 can you tell me the model of brake calipers you used?

@@hezrie.ghafar7410 thanks for the fast reply. I‘ve read online that there‘s a bit of incompatibility when it comes to using STIs with mtb break calipers. Do you have any complaints so far?

Hi.. Its a brake cable puller adapter for folding bike from Litepro..
26.27.5 is the og hybrid of the era
Hi, what brand of your chainring and what size?thanks
Hi.. Its a Deckas 38t
I am digging the bike, the video and the 26-27.5 conversion...however I keep asking why the gravel bike builds all go with the rigid front fork and no one has really given me a solid answer. Maybe I am just too old, but I remember the pre-suspesion days of beating my hands, arms, and shoulders all day. I thought that we had finally arrived as a civilization when I saw my first suspension fork. LOL!
Thank you for the comment.. Yeah good question.. Haven't thought of it.. But for me riding rigid makes it more fun.. But for the rough trails i do prefer my full suspension mtb.. Hehe..
Honestly, rigid forks look really clean on an aero bike. Maybe it all just comes down to aesthetics? Cuz on gravel and trails the speed lost from having the suspension counteract your pedaling force can't be that significant.
Weight. Especially if you're starting with a relatively inexpensive 90s or 00s mtb with a pogo stick front fork.
Saya dari indonesia ikut nonton...
Terima kasih.. 😊
Nice boss! 27.5 din ba fork mo boss? Ilan nlg kaya clearance ng pedal mula kalsada? Kasi bumaba na yung front mo.
Hi boss.. Fork is universal can fit from 26 up to 29er.. pedal clearance no issues..
Deore m5100 2x11 boleh pakai shifter apa kalau convert dropbar?
Most brifter 11 speed boleh je rasanye.. Cuma problemnya is cable pull road shifter ngan mtb derailleur x sama
Is it still suitable for your ride? Does it make you more comfortable than having the straight bar?
Still getting use to it and i do like the multiple hand position..

Hai bro, nice bike. can u info me for brand and type of your fork, and tyres. Thanks U
Hi.. Thanks bro.. Fork is rigid aluminium from Pasak and tyres are Panaracer Gravel King

How about gravel to MTB?
I my opinion, gravel bike are actually retro MTB that was disapeared from the market.
So I think it would work.
anu po yung shfiter nyo converter?
Shifter converter is actually a brake converter from litepro..
how is the reach compared to flat bars?
Hi.. Reach is a bit strech at first but after sliding the saddle forward slightly it seems to work for me.. Later i might try a shorter stem and see how it feels..
@@hezrie.ghafar7410 okay thanks for the reply! I mainly use my mtb on roads and really want to try drop bars but a lot says handling becomes bad with shorter stem on higher speeds. That is the only reason discouraging me from doing this conversion. (dont want a road bike cause of the bad roads here in the Philippines) plus the durability of mtb parts is just way higher when compared to other types of bikes on the same price range (also cheaper)
@@jhayveecamacho3900 you should try drop bars.. Its much more fun and you have multiple hand positions.. And yes shorter stem makes handling much faster.. Or maybe you can try Corner bar instead
@@hezrie.ghafar7410 yeah i am also considering the corner bar, but it sucks that only stainless steel is the current material it is available in. anyways thank you for answering my questions

If you will be ok for a lesser range, a Shimano 9speed MTB Rear Derailleur will work fine with a Roadbike brake and shifterlevers havig the same pull ratio just like in this video.

Nice build and great content, enjoyed watching.
or just buy microshift duals 😁
Mtb frame is very incompatible to make it a gravel bike. Mtb frame has a very long top tube which make a rider be uncomfortable of reaching the drop bar. So mtb and rb is a no no conversion to gravel. Hybrid bike is compatible to become a gravel bike my comrade!🤪
It depends on the size of your bike frame comrade…🤣🤣🤣
Из mtb получаются как раз очень крутые гравийники. И они больше пригодны для езды по пересеченке чем непосредственно гравиники из магазина.

Ok for bike enthusiasts. But, for what purpose? Sure, it shares a RB's drop bar handle look but it won't keep up with a RB's speed given the same 1x drivetrain set-up. (Pwd rin -- drawing lang :) ) Alternatively. I'd leave my MTB set-up as it is and get meself another bike -- a gravel bike or, should I say, a RB with the typical 2x set-up but with chunkier 700x35c tyres.
Gravel bike is the classic MTB with different geometry
I feel sorry for the RD... :(
Yeah.. Me too.. Hehe
