However, this seems to imply that those who are unconscious or experiencing some type of mental dysfunction cease to exist and lose their identity. In this case, how can we argue for the sanctity of human life if we only use consciousness as evidence for a soul? This is the best analolgy I have ever seen to explain consciousness.
That's an interesting analogy! Yes, consciousness is like a radio signal. When the radio is turned off, the signal still exists - you can't see it, but you can still hear it. Similarly, when your consciousness is disrupted, you still experience the world around you - you just can't see or understand it.
So your consciousness comes from what you watch on the TV.
Sounds about right.
I think a better analogy is that the soul is the radio signal, consciousness is the television program being displayed, and the body is the TV.
In that dynamic signal exists regardless, the TV exists until it breaks down due to time, and the program gets through/recognized based on the condition of the TV.
Though I prefer to think of it like a computer, the body is the hardware, the spirit is the electricity, and the soul is the software. In that consciousness would be something like software function that causes the screen to display what the software is doing.
He answered his question in his question. Consciousness is a proof of the soul. When you go into a coma or fall asleep, you could say you lose consciousness. That doesn’t mean you lose your soul. You just lose the proof for that period. But since it was already proven in yourself and others, it doesn’t need to be proven then too. You would need proof as to the contrary. Otherwise it’s reasonable to believe that you still have a soul when you are awake, asleep, in a coma, or while you were in the womb. Which I think makes sense.
Consciousness is proof of consciousness. It's not proof that some essential part of yourself can operate without a physical body. That's a huge leap.
Prove the contrary? That's non sense since there actually is no proof of a soul.

@@incredulouspasta3304 I think you're making a valid point. It's not proof that some essential part of yourself can operate without a physical body, but it's still an indication of consciousness.
Some of this might have gone over my head and that's ok; apologists have that talent to talk your head off sometimes. Anyway, Descartes certainly wasn't saying that "you see this table? this table doesn't think so it doesn't exist". He simply said, "because I think, I'm pretty sure I exist". No more, no less. Scripture does not explicitly define what human consciousness is, though the Bible provides perspectives on it. A biblical view of human consciousness might be summarized as “the soul’s awareness of itself and its surroundings.”
However, defining human consciousness is notoriously difficult. Exploring consciousness means probing the deepest questions about what it means to be human. Such discussion typically involves a long list of mysteries and dilemmas. Some concepts are unresolved; others present competing or apparently contradictory truths. The Bible gives us practical ways to understand some such issues. On other details Scripture is silent, and we’re left to untangle questions on our own.
Biblical terms related to this subject should be carefully understood, especially according to their immediate context. Ancient terminology did not distinguish between the “mind” and the “heart” to the same extent seen in modern languages. That’s not to say emotions and intellect were never distinguished. Rather, it means words translated as “heart” in Scripture are not necessarily references to “pure feeling.” In some cases, what the Bible refers to as “the heart,” a modern writer might well label as “the mind.”

I think that I would have taken a more logic based approach: the questioner presented Descartes's statement and then asked if the statement "I think therefore I am" is true, would that lead to the inverse statement being true, logic doesn't guarantee that, only the contrapositive (I am not, therefore I do not think) can be logically concluded to be true
Even simpler put, he said "I think" not we think or you think. His requirements for an existence are exactly that, his own. It doesn't imply that no other objective standard exists.
Let's just be succinct : consciousness is sufficient for existence but not necessary for existence.
Consciousness is an inevitable _consequence_ of existence.; and least for sentient beings.

Somewhat addressed at the end, but at the risk of revealing that I'm a nerd, the question as presented seems to make the logical error of assuming the converse. "I think, therefore I am" is not logically equivalent to "I don't think, therefore I am not." It is equivalent to its contrapositive: "I am not, therefore I do not think." It's not precisely useful in this philosophical discussion, but I think that's it's an evidently true statement.
More carefully examining the question, I think it's important to note the difference between what Descartes was trying to argue and what the questioner is concerned about. Descartes was attempting to reason from as few assumptions as possible in order to determine what could be reasonably known about the universe. This initial conclusion establishes only his own existence, and doesn't even address the existence of other people at all. Attempts to reason about other people's existence would require much more information, and I think the panel explained some good arguments that can be used to consistently define those terms in the video.
If we're just the products of a cosmic accident and are destined for annihilation, thinking and learning beyond what's necessary to survive is pointless. Contemplating and philosophizing over deeper matters nets nothing when death and annihilation is waiting to destroy all that was gained.
Deeper things of this nature that also include love, art, music and observation reflect a deeper being within us that surpasses some meat inside our skulls.
We are eternal spiritual beings that will go on beyond this body of flesh. Jesus Christ bore our sins that we may be spared the condemnation of Hell. Repent and believe to be saved from the eternal punishment and inherit eternal life with Him.

Yer, that's still one more than reality allows. A donkey can open its mouth as wide as it likes, it still doesn't have the anatomy required to produce human speech. God would of had to completely rearrange it's brain, throat, and mouth at a minimum. And this story being made up is far more reasonable than believing all of that.
As an agnostic, I'm fascinated by the claim that the mind is separate from the brain. What evidences do we have of this?
Your brain is an organ. A physical possession within your body. If we’re speaking spiritually here, it isn’t YOU.
YOU are a soul who HAS a body. NOT a body who HAS a soul.
So what’s the difference between mind and brain? Your brain, like your heart or liver or whatever else plays a role in the PHYSICAL function of this body you operate. But your MIND, those thoughts, that voice you hear in your head when you speak to yourself, that’s YOU. Your mind is YOU.
Our existence is not completely whatever is there in bucket of "Our Self Awareness", it is beyond our thinking and awareness. Because Brain is the third organ to form in the womb but still even before My Thinking(Brain) could exist and while My Self Awareness is Nothing/Dead/Unformed, I still existed as Zygote, Developing Baby in My Mother's Womb.
Which very clearly means "You already exist even before you could think and whatever I think is not completely me".
Your brain when born is the equivalent of scrambled eggs. There is no self awareness as it can't process self awareness, the wetware is unformed. It takes weeks of external stimuli before the brain begins to organize itself and self awareness develops.
Why are we even talking about this? The soul hasn't been shown to be a thing.
A physical thing, no. Subject to the scientific method, no. But not everything that's real *is* subject to the scientific method. Indeed, the scientific method presupposes the trustworthiness of the non-scientific philosophical disciplines of epistemology.

Is there any evidence that our consciousness is distinct from the brain? As far as I know there isn't. It's fun to speculate, of course, but any talk about "souls" without evidence will just remain that: speculation.
If someone took the life of a loved one and said they are just a lump of cells who cares? How would you respond?

Better yet, if consciousness is a result of the brain and all we are are atoms and molecules. Elections firing off and bouncing off eachother randomly than how could you come to the conclusion that consciousness is the result of the brain with any certainty. How could you come to anything with any certainty? Everything is just a random cluster of electrons and atoms firing off randomly. That’s all we are. Cosmic star dust. Consciousness would be an illusion. And that would mean free will is an illusion, time is an illusion, morality and good and evil, math, science itself… love. Yup you guessed it.. all an illusion. So what do you consider evidence? Because there’s plenty of evidence for the existence of God. And if there’s a God than there is reasonable argument for the existence of the soul.

Hi, I keep raise this problem on this channel but the authors didn't gave me a complet answer. If a human didn't had conscience at all, he couldn't make any decisions, he didn't had free will. So he didn't had the chance to make the decision to trust God and what He did for us. That means that he didn't have the chance to be saved. But God is just, so every human have the chance to be saved, to take the decision to trust God. So all human should be conscience at one point, to be able to take that decision.
God is imaginary.
That's why these questions arise and will never be answered.

I can see that. What people call the soul is really just a title given to a group of brain functions. Nothing supernatural, not something that actually exists, just the title for a group of completely natural brain functions.
You can assert the existence of the soul all you want. That is a far cry (literally on the other end of speculative philosophy) from the rock bottom philosophy of "I think therefore I am."
And going beyond that non-knowledge to entertain specifics on how soul stuff works is akin to speculating about whether Peter Pan can reattach his shadow with soap. You don't know anything even if you happen to be right that souls exist! The Bible on this topic doesn't even make stuff up for you to arbitrarily believe!

No, they likely still have a brain, just malformed. If they were without a whole brain, then they would not be able to breathe, pump their heart, vomit, swallow, etc. Consciousness would not even be there. You need a brain for that, even one that is missing parts or damaged. The condition I am referring to, by the way, is anencephaly.

The reality is that most Christians don't have a clue about what the Bible teaches and believe in a God and form of Chhhristianity made up by later Church fathers based on Greek philosophy. Let me briefly give you some examples. :
1. Most Christians - and indeed many other religions - teach that man has an immortal soul that survives death. Yet, the Bible teaches the exact opposite. It teaches that man is a nephesh (soul) and so are all other living, breathing creatures. They are all souls. The Bible is clear: The soul is mortal. It dies.(Ezek 18:4) Thus, the fact that we, as living beings, creatures , souls die is in harmony with scientific fact and our reality.
2. Based on the false belief of a soul, most believe that the good go to heaven and the bad go to the fires of Hell. Again, the Bible actually teaches something very different. It does not say that all good people go to heaven. Indeed, such an idea was unknown to Moses and the prophets. Likewise, the Hebrew word for 'Hell' is sheol, which simply meant the grave. This is where all dead people end up. Good and bad alike. In sheol, there is no conscious existence (and no immortal soul to torment) . Ecc9; 5, 10. Most reference books should easily explain this. Indeed we find examples of people in the bible, like Job, wanting to go to the Bible 'Hell' to escape their suffering. They understood that death ends suffering.
So, even if you don't believe the Bible, which you clearly don't, I have at least shown you that what it says about death is in complete harmony with what we perceive as reality.

For to even exist, when you think about it, is a reality that one could meditate on indefinitely in regards to its implications. That means someONE, specifically the Creator of everything, made a *decision* that I would exist. That is the Crux of the legitimacy of all human life, for we are the only ones given the option to embrace or reject that reality.
That’s a statement that would need to me demonstrated to be a fact though.

Genesis 2-5 show you what a soul is and what the state of the dead is. That concept of a human soul and an animal soul is Greek philosophy as well as most of this guy's answer. The Bible is clear dust + breath of life = a living soul. Dust - breath of life = dust.

He details the importance about identifying what another person is saying.
Whether it’s true or what they believe to be true.
If Christianity is a belief then it’s not what you know is true, it’s what you believe to be true.

I think the brain is the connection between the soul and the body. Your personality is part of your soul. Memory may get stored in the brain. Accessed by the soul on need.. not much different than a programmer and a computer.
