Camp Hovey Barracks Room

- Enjoy the walkthrough of my barracks room in Camp Hovey, South Korea. This will be my home for the next nine months. It is a basic studio apartment. Although this may not appeal to many, I have lived in much worse conditions. After over 14 years in the Army I finally was assigned a room without a roommate! It is also nice to have a full kitchen with a stove. Most Soldiers here only have a sink and microwave and will have to buy a hotplate if they want to do any real cooking.

Glad to hear the name camp Hovey. I was there 99-01. One cold night in winter when there was heavy snow, the shuttle bus in the post wasn't running i had to walk all the way back to my barrack in hovey from main gate of camp casey. I remember it took like more than an hour...hahaha.
I've done that walk three times. Twice to earn a 40km distance hiking medal from Luxembourg (I made a couple videos on that). And the third time was more of a stumble back to Hovey after a long night out and the buses had stopped running.
I served there in 1984-1984 in the old quanson huts on the hill C Company 102nd MI battalion.
Many of the quonset huts are still there but are used storage and office space. Thank you for service and thanks for watching!
Thanks Logan. Basic room, but has everything you would need. Cheers Mate. Take care. 👍🙂
I'm actually pretty please that I won't have a roommate for the next 8 months.
Thank you for your service. I got out of the Army 47 years ago. I was in the last draft for Viet Nam. Luck me, right🤦♂️I retired from the Army Corp of Engineers Dec 31st. You Scored!! Yep, bottle opener. You still got it so much nicer than I ever had it. Nice place. Hope things go well for you. I was in the Electric Strawberry, 84th Eng. Btn. Home duty station Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Take care👍Like 2
Great video. I was on Camp Hovey Jan 94 - Jan 95. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you liked the video. I doubt much has changed on Hovey since the 90s. Thanks for watching! 🤙
im thankful for thiks video your room dosent look bad compared to the stories ive heard about them i just got here and im on qt at camp humohreys cant wait to see what camp hovey has in store
Hey! Just saw your comment. How is your room? Hopefully you're enjoying your time here at Hovey.
My 1977 Camp Hovey expeiience. B Co 1/23. We lived in Korean War era Quonset Huts, 2 NCO 'rooms' closet sized and 10 troops out on bay floor. Mine hootch was right there alongside "Sh*t Creek", interesting smell. Heat was an oil fired stove in center of floor, NCO rooms were cold, sacrifice for 'privacy'. Central latrine in different building, fun run for your after PT shower on a winters morning. We had houseboys to keep ther place cleqn, and he usually provided a plastic claseable paint bucket for your bio needs,
Thing sure have changed, and how can you complain?
Quite a few old quonset huts are still in use. Not as living quarters but as office space or storage. Some things have changed but I'm sure the smells are very similar. Thanks for watching! 🇺🇲🫡
Holy cow the storage in that place!
I'm glad because I have so much Army gear that we were required to bring. Thanks for watching 🤙
Aco 1/38th 2ID 1972-1973. What a difference a day makes. Our luxury accommodations were a slice of 5x9’ floor space in a Q hut. Wall lockers defined our personal space from the next GI. Heat during the winter was provided by 2 diesel space heaters fed by a 5gal. fuel can. Latrine was across the ditch in another Q hut.
You live in a super hooch! However, I harbor no I’ll feelings toward you guys. You are, as we were, the first line of defense if & when crazy Kim decides to jump the line. Be well, be safe my brother.
Hello. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The living conditions are definitely plush compared to your experience here. Thank you for your service and thanks for watching 🤙
1988-89 1/503rd PIR, HHC FiST platoon.
We were the FIRST troops to ever get to live in the new barracks buildings.
I lived on the 3rd floor, 4th door down on the right.
I definitely lucked out with this room! I'm sure you were also pleased when the buildings were new compared to the old barracks. Thanks for watching!
That was very interesting to see around the barracks and really cool that people left you stuff! Mirror is a bit low lol 😂 strange bottle opener but I think your right!
Thanks for watching! The mirror is low because of the door peephole. I don't know why they don't put the mirrors on the wall. Each room has them on the doors 🤷. Have a great day!
@@goinggrays ah cool 😎 👌 👍 ironically im just about to mount a mirror on my hallway wall lol
Yeap.. simple living.. take care 🙏💝
Thanks for watching! 🤙
Boy the Barracks came a long way since I was there in 1997. We stayed in little trailer huts, wasn't bad though, we had electric, ac, and heat.
Crazy what will change in 25 years! Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching!
Imma be there next year.
Korea is very fun. If you have any questions let me know. Thanks for watching! 🤙
What barracks should we expect for e4 and below? I'll be at hovey in about a month
It will likely be a 2 person room with a shared bathroom like many barracks rooms in the US. I doubt it will have a kitchen. Probably a mini fridge and a desk. Check the Hovey-Casey Buy/Sell page in FB. You’ll likely find tvs, Xbox, microwaves selling for cheap. The room may not sound too awesome, but go out and explore Korea. I’m trying to get back there myself.
I was stationed at Hovey Feb. 82-Aug 83. B Co, 1/23 Inf Wpns Plt Ldr, then HHC XO. The only person who had a room close to this was the Bn Cdr.
Hello! I am surprised how popular this video has become. I'm glad so many vets have enjoyed seeing what rooms look like now compared to 30yrs ago. The BN CDRs and CSMs have duplex a house! Basically a double-wide trailer home split down the middle into two apartments. Thanks for watching! Did you take taekwondo classes while at Hovey?
@@goinggrays funny you should ask. That is what I do. I teach Taekwondo. So, I arrived in Korea as a 2nd Dan. The Camp Hovey TKD instructor was Master Kim, Jin-young. We are still associated. He's a 9th Dan in TX and I'm an 8th Dan in PA.
Okay! I saw your YT name was about taekwondo. So many Soldiers take the classes in Korea. It's pretty cool they offer that as a fun culture activity and it's really awesome the same thing was available back in the 80s.
I was in the 1st and 38th Charlie company 85-86 was the first to stay in the super hooch’s what’s your rank that you stay in a studio apartment
Hello. I am a CW2. Most officers received individual rooms. Many receive a room with just a bed and desk with a bathroom. I was lucky enough to have one with a kitchen. Which buildings are the super hooch's? Are you referring to the quonset huts? Thanks for watching!
Leaving there in 3 months I’m a CPL will I have my own room?
That will ultimately depend on your command. From my experience it was SFC and up that had their own rooms. Don't let your buddies sit in their room and play Xbox the whole time. Get out and experience all the things to do. Enjoy Korea!
Is this barrack only for the NCOs?
Hello. Mostly officers and senior NCOs have this style of room. Thanks for watching 🤙
My non-nco barracks weren't too bad at Hovey. My roommate wasn't too bad. Just a lot of Spanish arguments on the phone. Still buy Soju here in CONUS
I would definitely go back to Korea. I had a great time there.
Camp Casey 86-87 4 man rooms! this is 5 star accommodations compared to what he had then.
I believe most of the junior enlisted had two-person rooms with a shared bathroom. I was extremely lucky.
spent about 2 years there back in 2013, not gonna lie, Hovey itself sucked ass. When possible, take time to go off post and travel around both the major city areas like Seoul (gonna need a pass since youre in Area 1, but honestly, using the trains, I was able to go to Seoul and back within the day no problem and well within curfew) and the countryside/oceansides. Pretty sure they drill this into you but stay away from the Ville right off post.
Thanks for watching! From Area 1 we can travel all the way to Humphreys without a pass. Problem right now is that we are constantly on a covid restriction so we cannot venture off post. Hopefully soon I can travel the area.
😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 mine did not look like that
Yeah, I got lucky. It only took almost 15 years to finally get a decent room. Thanks for watching!
