Love Limmy's description of the Scottish phone voice. It's often weird to me seeing Scottish people talking in films or that since a lot of people when acting do the phone voice more than the real one so it sounds fake to me.
I think it's hard to keep your accent when you live somewhere else, my accent has been corrupted from living in Fife for a couple of years and it was hard not to slip back in to speaking more like how I used to when I went back to speaking to my gran and that.
Peter Capaldi grew up in the same area as me (was a year or two below my dad in high school) and his accent reminds me a lot of how my mum's brother talks, like, he's trying to talk more "proper" since he's moved up in the world. But I can still hear a little bit of a Billy Connelly quality to some of what he says.

I'm Irish and I've been teaching English here for 3 years. From habit, and because I need the kids and my coworkers to understand me I have to speak slower and enunciate a lot more. It's funny, because one of my friends here who's a South African says that my accent is a lot more neutral if I've been home for an hour or two after work, but as the evening progresses my Irish accent gets stronger and stronger.

It's how he's pronouncing vowels. Most of his pronunciation is still Scottish sounding but when he says things like "would, around" you can hear the longer vowels which is more typical of English accents. I have an aunt who lived in England for years and so to us she sounds super posh/english because of the vowels but down south they think her Scottish dialect is still pretty strong, similar to Capaldi.
