I remember hearing this song for the first time as a young teenager, when the record first came out. I was dealing with so much shame and embarrassment at that time. Already people had started calling me the f-slur before I had even come to terms with the idea that that was what I was, and other boys would have these stupid conversations like "Would you rather x, or be gay?" (Obviously they'd always pick the former, no matter how gruesome, even if it meant death.) I fought hard against my desires, but hearing Alex sing about stubble on his sticky lips was like a jolt of lightning that shocked me out of denial. Nothing will ever be as electrifyingly sexy as that moment, when being gay was so taboo and Alex was whispering this delicious filth in my ear through my headphones, as I went to school.
What I'm trying to say is, thank you Franz, for such a pivotal moment in my sexual awakening.

As a gay teen in Middle of Nowhere Iowa, I wanted to be their Michael. There are no songs in mainstream rock for gay teens to latch onto. I still prefer my rock harder than this (Courtney Love or L7 come to mind), but this song is vital to my life's soundtrack. It let me almost "belong".
