    Next tech tip could be about proper mounting for external fuel pumps, above, or below a sump, line sizing, fuel pump size etc.

    Late to the game, but thank you so much! I have been scratching my head looking at LS oil catch can plumbing diagrams thinking how crazy it is that there are so many ways, and wondering which was best. In my head I am thinking that is has to be easier than that. This video, makes it simple and easy. Thank you again.

    Another great video, this needs to be pushed more in the industry, there is so much misinformation surrounding catch cans.

    On my 68 mustang fuel injected 438windsor high compression e85 motor street strip car i run exact set up, except i use a Moroso baffled breather with internal foam seal in each breather n breather has hose on each one and that hose runs to breather catch can tank. Car makes around 520wheel through a big stalled th400 and will probably run high 9's all motor. Weighs 3k lbs and drives like a new Cadillac on street, but launches like a drag car. Exactly what i wanted. A car that i can drive anywhere anytime and drive to track and rip off some high 9's and drive home. Car is stupid fast from a dig and even teslas have no chance except the Plaid...lol

    Dont forget to have your vent lines at the FRONT of the valvecover and not the rear ! .. When you are pulling 2g of the line the back of the valvecover fills up

    Possibly a dumb question, but how do you handle the PVC port near the throttle body? Typical PCV hose goes from valve cover to the intake. If you just run a can from the valve cover, are you just left with an open fitting at the intake?

  • @danielsullivan9865
    @danielsullivan9865 Před 3 lety

    We put a ball valve with a short section of 3/8 inch hose on the bottom of the catch can to drain it. With 27 lb of boost it gets no oil out of the catch can just nearly pure ethanol. Catch can is mounted out front on the car where it gets cold air so the alcohol distills out of the vapor.

    I have a catch can with a -10 going to each valve cover on my son's naturally aspirated 5.3 and it keeps pushing the knock sensor plugs out so I'm assuming it's too much crankcase pressure but everything I've read says it should be vented plenty for a 300 hp engine 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • @jaredspear8140

    Doug. We’ve got a bbc only making less than 600 hp. We are pretty new to drag racing. Only a couple years in. So we’ve got an N/A bbc 468, on a Holley 850 E85 set up. Cast heads, electric water pump, fuel, fans. Nothing too fancy. I just changed our venting this last winter. I went to a breather on the valve covers, previously had a rubber hose down to the collector. But want to use those for bungs for O2 sensors. Should I do away with vents on valve covers and go to a catch can, or go back to collectors with rubber hoses from valve cover? Just wanting to protect her every way possible.
    Thanks for the content. I’m amazed at how much I don’t know by watching this kind of stuff. Not that I am a smart guy, but I’ve known my way around an engine from a young age. Shade tree mechanic at best!

    • @MrAnviljenkins
      @MrAnviljenkins Před 3 lety +1

      To be clear, folks seem to use a sealed catch can designed to separate the oil but it is still returning the blow by into the intake manifold.

    • @lirwin89
      @lirwin89 Před 3 lety

      I can't say anything about pros and cons of the different methods... But one reason for the sealed cans is because in places like Australia it's illegal for it to vent to atmosphere.

    Catch can? For decades I have used a 5litre oil bottle with two 3/4" pipes from the engine to the catch can. Half a dozen 1/8" holes in the top to vent the pressure.
    This on various n/a race engines. I do NOT get any oil in the can, if you do you do not have an engine. In road racing you need at least a 3 litre catch can though IF you are getting more than 10% of that your engine is junk or breathers not venting the engine.
    Most engines will vent to the top naturally. But with bad oiling and pan they sometime pressurise the engine and not allow it to actually breathe the engine. So look hard at your drain backs, lower the oil level in a wet sump to fix the windage which in turn improves oiling and power. On some engines a breather, 3/4", between the side of the pan to the rocker cover helps. Left side of the engine is best.
    All of these mega power engines should be properly dry sumped. Wet sump is for the towcar. And if you are still building pressure fix the ring seal!!
    It seems these hairdryer engines all fume like blazes,,, maybe do something with the ring seal. Watch the Casey Jones cloud out of the bootlid as they leave.
