You cant breathe if you are engulfed in fire and everything takes a back seat to not being able to breathe even burning pain. That scream is not pain it is sheer horror.
They are.. in space suits I believe, you know.. with oxygen hoses
@@Coyote6745 they were poorly sealed and the hoses weren't fire proof. When the fire sucked all the oxygen , it probably took theirs too, their suits failed. By the time the fire stopped their suits were ruptured and melted.

Yeah, but they apparently lasted long enough to let them keep conscious and screaming than smoke would normally permit, unfortunately.

Hey, so, the astronauts were actually trash talking God moments before this incident…. Yeah they are most likely NOT in heaven.
@@Hadley378 apollo 1 was death trap. Just like how Soyuz 1 was.
Actually, the autopsy report that the scream was fire sparking another wire. The astronauts died so quickly what they wouldn’t even be able to open the hatch if they tried. They could’ve made it out because the suits were made to withstand a few minutes of fire. But they died because they inhaled too much smoke.
Apollo 1 was a death trap. Just like Soyuz 1
@@Hadley378 not how it’s works
@@codydevlin1800 really? How does it work. Cause I’ve read the Bible…
There was a Russian cosmonaut in the Soviet Union (Komarov) whose spacecraft failed at reentry I believe. It was known the craft was not ready so while he was plunging to the ground in an uncontrollable spin he was furiously cursing every Soviet boss he felt was responsible. I think he requested his remains to be exhibited and they were. It was a big piece of burnt and mangled flesh without recognizable human shape. You can see it online.
The thing about that Russian cosmonaut is that he knew that it didn’t work and he would die. Although if he didn’t do it, the guy after him would and that guy was Yuri Gagarin, the first person in space.
Are you talking about Vladimir Komarov
@@PolaroidLandCamera-cm8ke Soyuz 1? Sorta. Literally _every_ engineer knew it wasn't ready for flight and even the ground controllers mid-flight were not convinced Soyuz 1 could land safety.
Since it was the height of the Moon Race, a lot of tests and safety measures were skipped. Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov - as Gordon Cooper did on his Mercury flight - managed to hit his reentry angle manually, and just when everyone thought the worst was over, the main parachutes failed to open.
Thing is, Yuri Gagarin, Komarov's best friend, tried to get himself installed as the Soyuz 1 pilot under the gamble that the authorities wouldn't risk getting the first man in space killed. He was unsuccessful, Komarov was sent, and the rest was history.
As for the recordings regarding Komarov cursing the team the whole way down, their authenticity remains debated to this day.

@@AHHHHHHHH21 Now is that right, teacher???
@@AHHHHHHHH21Ever hear of a typo??
More information: this happen during a test rehersal that wasnt even supposed to be considered dangerous because the rocket fuel was emptied from the spacecraft.
When you are working with equipment like this there is always danger. You can minimize it, but doing things that man has never done before comes with risk. Even in a launch rehearsal such as this.
It's silly to even think about now, but back then, pure oxygen was used in the cockpit. Pure oxygen + the electrical short that happened = instant incinerator.
Aka Murder
There are a lot of bad engineers. Over confidence and ego along with a time schedule and budget.
@gregeilk time schedule? It was a rat race eith the soviets, and they lost. But at what price
"Can you egress at this time?" made my heart DROP. They were practically dead before ground control even said it.
I'll never forget the day, and I was only 5 years old. All Heroes, Grissom, White and Chaffee.
“WE’RE BURNING UP, AAAAAHHHHHH!!!” Is terrifying..
I was alone in the cockpit of a B747 while being towed when an electrical fire broke out in the center console.
The thing that sticks with me is the speed that things happen (and I wasn't in a 100% oxygen environment) and the lung burning acrid smell of the smoke is like nothing I've ever encountered, it just sucked every ounce of strength from me.
I can't imagine the fear these three men felt being absolutely helpless to do anything.
We did the Apollo 1 crew so wrong.
They voiced concerns about the cockpit being 100 percent oxygen, they voiced concerns over the amount of flammable material, they voiced concerns over the amount of time it took for an emergency egress, they had complaints about the complicated mechanism and tools needed to open the hatch, and nasa was there the whole time saying “it’s fine, I promise, we would never let anything happen to you and besides, we will be right there to help you get out in emergency…
It ended up taking the pad and egress crew over 10 minutes to reach them, they were dead in 30 seconds. The high oxygen environment essentially acted as an incinerator.
Even worse, nasa left their bodies in the spacecraft for over 8 hours so they could “study what went wrong”
It also becomes even more of a messed up story when you realize that either Gus Grissom or Ed White were destined to be the first on the moon, not, Armstrong. In all reality, the Apollo 11 crew probably would have been white, Chaffee and Grissom with white being mission lead, therefore first on the moon.
RIP to all of them.
I remember the news report about this when I was a kid.
I liked all things to do with space, and I was deeply shocked
this is bone chilling footage. my heart goes out to the crew, and i hope they know that their efforts toward the program paid off.

and what makes this even sadder is that they weren’t even in space. They were on the launch pad, waiting to go and due to all of the SERIOUS HAZARDOUS problems in that rocket, they were burnt to a crisp.

RIP you reached for the stars and you were THERE, even all this time later, RIP and condolences to families.
That scream is the sound of a man who realizes he is about to die with no hope of survival. Think about that.
I'll pass
Same type of scream came from a man by the name of Kevin Cosgrove who died on September 11th. Seems there is only one sound like that, when someone knows they are about to die. He was in an upper floor office in WTC 2, on the phone with the 911 operator, when the building began to collapse. His last cry was, "Oh, God! AHHHH......" and the call cut off. Just as in this tragedy, it turns your stomach to hear it.

There is a very good chance that, had they lived, Gus and Ed would have been the first to land on the moon. Crews usually rotated to a new mission after five flights. With Apollos 7, 8, 9, 10…Apollo 11 might have been assigned to them!

Heh... It's almost like they knew.
Very scary screaming
this is what happens when depending too much on trial and error.. these 3 probably know how dangerous it is and would be, voiced their concerns but persuaded that everything is fixed and are all right. They probably did it with heavy heart but still did it anyway because its their duty.
mercury and gemini used pressurized cockpits, so they assumed it would also work well, they immediately changed it
One thing I always respected about Americas space program vs. the soviets, even our failures were public information.
RIP you didn’t deserve that…
I had talked about this with my mother. But I'd never realized what had really happened. We never talked about there was a fire.
This brings this history alive for me.And makes it very real
“Can you egress at this time?”
No, because the Block 1 Apollo capsule wasn’t designed for quick egress on the launch pad. Even if the fire hadn’t killed the astronauts as quick as it had, they had zero chance of escaping through a plug-type hatch with the inside pressurized to 15 PSI. This accident is a good example of what happens when unacceptable risks are normalized. The same poor risk management would later doom the crews of the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.
May God rest their souls!
The worst bit is that they responded right after they had already burned. They were 5 seconds too late.
No. It was more like five minutes before they could open the hatch.
Such a tragedy and the loss of three of the best.

Holy shit that’s disturbing
The fire didn't kill them as a couple burns would be easily survivable.
They died to toxic chemicals and smoke as the fire melted away their suits and the tubes that supplied breathable oxygen. Then they inhaled the fumes and died immediately
...
Not in *that* amount of time..... .
A fire which is not overly-near you can cause you to heat up and then overheat you in a matter of seconds, around (15 - 30 seconds). Smoke caused from plastic or aerospace-grade material like carbon fibre and such will cause a choking that causes you to suffer breathing problems for circa 2 minutes (20 seconds plus being able to speak comprehensive-ably, or 2 to 3 minutes before you pass out from lack of oxygen). How do I know this? Oh, *both* of my parents are doctors..... one of them a surgeon with many papers written on them which was submitted to Johns Hopkins.
So. Yeah, that.
