    Ok, you guys are precious.
Much love and we're behind you and have been. That's not stopping. You guys are real and honest and that comes through.
It's just sad that we now live in a place where we have to spend 6 minutes apologizing for being ourselves.
Snobbery cannot not belong in sharing and art cannot grow without an audience. All are welcome.
Sistah: welcome to metal. We may be the most die-hard fans on the planet. And we're some of the nicest people around.
At heart anyway; pokey af on the outside sometimes.
Wolf: I know you heard that too. Air-guitar and drum all you want man. It's supposed to be art and art is about feeling. No one who actually enjoys this music can logically get down on someone else for enjoying it as they see fit.
Self-admitted reformed snob here: "Yes, I see the gaffes, that's not the point
Well, guess I'll take note of something else than the environment in part 2.
Keep going! So much more to love.

petgeek1 thanks for the love and understanding 🤗 For the most part it's been very positive. Much more so than I was expecting. I do admit I was a bit too rusty when we started but it's slowly starting to come back to me. But you're right, the point of this is really to entertain and have fun so thanks for that 👊🤟✊

HalfLifeSistah - aww... Very welcome, of course.
Like any genre; there is wheat and there is chaff. Wolf has started you out right (near as I can tell anyway), but we're all behind you both. Let's keep going.
Makes me wonder if y'all would want to set up polls somehow for future videos or something.
We're a fanatical community and we all have our own areas of expertise (again, as in any genre).
      Let's all learn together.
One love / simultaneously throws up the horns.

    The lyrics are
"When a man lies, he murders some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear to witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?"
The spoken word at the end of the song (“When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives.”) was written by German poet Paul Gerhardt. The second half of the speech (“All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?”) was written by their former Bassist Cliff Burton, who the song is dedicated to. Most of the Bass melody was originally written and composed by him but he died before the song could be recorded

Call of Ktulu is a truly phenomenal instrumental piece, it's up there with Orion. But it probably won't qualify for the 'make you cry' category. It will, however, send shivers down your spine and make your skin crawl throughout its entirety. As befits H. P. Lovecraft's famous short story, the song really captures the sense of dread and unknown danger that sleeps in R'lyeh...

I just love watching you guys. In the second part of this particular offering Wolf said e is jealous of how you hear and feel the music in a dramatically different way. I won't take away the validation of another person's thoughts but I personally appreciate the way you both complement one another with the different ways you approach the beauty of music. It really is a wonderful thing to see the both of you go on the same journey together yet walk a different path along the way, yet manage to make that difference somehow meaningless. I look forward to watching more!
EDIT: Wolf you don't have to be an expert on music and musical theory and application in order to understand music itself. You provide amazing thoughts and interpretations on the songs you view. Both of you do! As much as I have watched of you I don't think I would feel the same about one or the other alone, so to me you are just as integral to this process as HLS is. You're a team that celebrates the beauty of music together.

Great video, and extended tribute to Cliff Burton. This has always been my favorite song by Metallica. I never knew its true origins until now.
This immediately reminded me of another tribute, one some would say started as a suicide note. James Sullivan (known more commonly as "The Rev"), was the drummer, pianist, backup vocalist, and one of the primary songwriters for the band Avenged Sevenfold. He had known for some time that he had an enlarged heart, which would probably lead to a painful death at a young age.
The last song he ever wrote was originally titled death, renamed to fiction (a nickname The Rev had given himself). He recorded the entirety of the song himself and turned it in, reportedly saying, "That's it, that's the last song for this record". 3 days later, he was found dead. The official story was that he died of an accidental overdose (various drugs, mixed with alcohol) but the lyrics of the song suggest otherwise, and so does the fact that he had previously written the song Brompton Cocktail, which is about using drugs mixed with alcohol to kill someone.
As far as I'm aware, the released version of the song is unchanged other than the lead singer, Matthew Sanders (known as M. Shadows), having recorded his own voice and edited it into portions of the song as a sort of duet.
It is a beautiful, powerful song, and would probably be an ideal choice for a video in this series.

    WE DID IT AGAIN!
What I think is important about the 2011 performance, to me, is that while sometimes they would occasionally short change some of their songs or not always play the songs 1 for 1 as they were originally written. With this performance they took absolutely no shortcuts and played it as well as a live performance possibly could. It obviously shows how important Cliff was to the band and just makes me appreciate it even more.
Also, you want some good Robert Trujillo material, I SERIOUSLY recommend checking out Infectious Grooves. They're very funky and show off just how good Rob can play. Infecto Groovalistic is great first choice.
Also, just to show Jason Newsted some love as well, he was a better bassist than a lot of people give him credit for. Check out his previous band Flotsam and Jetsam and their track Hammerhead. Jason just absolutely shreds on the bass in that track.
I have PLENTY of material to recommend for various reasons, but those two tracks in particular are the first to come to mind just to show off the skills of the two bassists in question.

I don't think I've seen anyone reply about this yet, but they played this in 2011 in their 30th anniversary shows as a continued tribute to Cliff. Those are the same shows where they brought back all the previous members. I don't know why they never played it live in its entirety before or since. Probably because it is sacred, an assumption, but time limitations may also factor in.

Forgive me for saying something negative as I love you guys and this is a beautiful, heartfelt reaction as always, but I'm really disappointed it's not the studio version. This is an OK live performance, but it doesn't have the heart breakingly beautiful intro and outro, doesn't have that amazing clean guitar tone that suddenly shines through the unusually harsh and dry rhythm guitars, solos are improvised and not nearly as _perfect_ as on the original... I can only hope Sistah will listen to the studio version by herself to fully appreciate it.
Edit: Oh, part 2 just dropped with the studio version so I feel like an idiot but I'll still leave the comment up :)

There are some rare instances where listening to a band live gets you some great Easter Eggs of sorts--I humbly reference Deep Purple here--but most of the time, the studio version has the sound quality and precision you really need. You captured it perfectly when you said "heartbreakingly beautiful intro and outro." This is one of Metallica's epic instrumentals that they are famous for!

I remember the concert, because they played an full on acoustic version of master of puppets, and people were like WTF? Jerry Cantrell came out to sing fade to black with James, and most importantly, they COULD NOT sell out the stadium. They gave away general admission tickets that normally cost 45 dollars, for just 20.

It depends how you look at it. There's some really, really impressive lyricists in rap that can portray a lot of emotion and narrative. Partially because I think that they usually have more lyrics and more poetic (IMO). Coming from someone who mainly listens to metal and rock in general.

It sure feels good to see that the music I found in the 80's, grew up to and love so deep has the power you have shown it has. I am sorry you cried but it feels good to know you enjoyed it so strongly that it touched your heart. I agree, very beautiful song with deep sentimentality. Thank you for sharing! Liked and followed!
Now, I can list songs all day because I love music and it is my life but here are a few I feel you all should try:
    Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" and "Black."
Hank Williams "I'm So Lonesome I could Cry."
    Rod Stewart "Forever Young."
    Aerosmith "Amazing."
Scorpions "Wind Of Change," "Still Loving You" and "Send Me An Angel."
Rammstein's "Klavier," "Wilder Wein," "Ohne Dich" and "Spring" (video) which is in German so some studying and translation research may be in order; I recommend herzeleid/com
    Skid Row "18 and Life."
RUSH "Tears," "Closer To The Heart," "The Pass" and "Bravado."
    Heart "These Dreams."
    Grace Slick "Dreams."
    Black Sabbath "Changes."
Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoades) "Goodbye To Romance."
Ozzy Osbourne "See You On The Other Side," "My Little Man," "Tomorrow," "Denial," "Aimee," "Mama I'm Coming Home" and "Time After Time."
    Cyndi Lauper "TIme After Time."
Megadeth "A Tout Le Monde," and "The Darkest Hour" (which is heavy but dedicated to Cliff Burton.
Bob Seger "Like A Rock," "Turn The Page," "Against The Wind" and "We've Got Tonight."
    Pat Benetar "We Belong."
The Rolling Stones "Wild Horses," "Angie" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want."
The Beatles "Hey Jude" and "While My Guiter Gently Weeps."
John Lennon "Watching The wheels (Go Round and Round)."
George Harrison "My Sweet Lord" and "Isn't It A Pity."
    Almost any Eagles song lol
Lynyrd Skynyrd "Freebird" and "Simple Man."
KoRn "4 U" (tribute to their fans as they admit it is all because of the fans).
Slipknot "XIX" (their song about 'the dead' [Paul Gray]).
Sid Wilson "Flatlace" (Sid of Slipknot begging Paul Gray to stop drugs before it kills which, not long after, drugs did kill Paul).
    Def Leppard "Love Bites."
Bon Jovi "Never Say Goodbye" and "I'll Be There For You."
Pink Floyd "Comfortably Numb" (live version from pulse, which is one of the best captures ever), "The Great Gig In The Sky," "Goodbye Blue Sky," "On The Turning Away," "Hey You" (live version from pulse) and "High Hopes."
    ZZ Top "Rough Boy."
    Cinderella "Nobody's Fool."
    Nazareth "Love Hurts."
    No Doubt "Don't Speak."
    Evanescence "My Immortal."
    Yngwie Malmsteen "Like An Angel."
    Iron Maiden "Wasting Love."
Insane Clown Posse "Nothing's Left" (I know, ICP, but this song is actually a beautiful song other than a bit of language at the beginning of the song).
I'll stop here but I know many more; this list is gotten longer than I intended lol

Finally!!!! but IMO, you should've listen to the studio version first because Lars and Kirk performed poorly on this and James didn't do his solo and Kirk didn't play the guitar intro, which for some fans like me it was the most memorable part of the song. I know it's their first time to play this live so I guess that's acceptable. Can't wait for you to listen to the studio version!

My memory is hazy but I thought I heard that while To Live Is To Die was definitely composed of Cliff's writings, it was particularly the short spoken part that was of special mention, cos it was written by Cliff. And I may also have this wrong (hazy memory and all), but I thought I heard tell that those words in the song were spoken by Cliff himself (harvested - with sorrow - from some demo recording or such). For all I know it could have just been James reading Cliff's words, but either way, it's definitely a tribute track, all nearly-10 minutes worth.

...And Justice For All was the first Metallica album I hit the ff button on. Up until then including the 5.98 ep was hit play and wait for the side to get over. The $5.98 EP was the first album with Newsted and highly underrated imo. Even the quick snippet at the end where the were clowning on Maiden was cool. As it goes, there has always been 2 Metallicas imo. With Cliff where every song was a master piece and after Cliff, where the still put out great music but there is a noticeable difference. Cliff was a hard loss for us, I cant imagine what the band was going through. They are legends.

The first concert footage was from 1989 - not 1986. Burton is credited for the lyrics (only), which was a poem he (re-)wrote. The song was only jammed on in concert in 1988-1989 and 1993 (here in an instrumental medley with Call of Ktulu and Orion) before 2011, where it was played only once.

This is a legendary piece(as are all from Metallica from Kill'em all to Black). For some reason I like Dyer's Eve the most in the album.
The lyrics of To live is to die are by Cliff, written on his tomb stone.
And a peculiar note, One is about WWII, but there's sound of choppers in the beginning :)

Another thing Alot of people don't realize is that Cliff Burton is consistently Honored by James Hetfield. How, you might ask ...? There is an old photo of Cliff standing by himself holding up 2 closed fists towards the camera. On Both hands he wears Silver Skull Rings on his fingers.... James Hetfield now wears those Same Rings on his hands. They can be clearly seen in numerous music videos & live performances - including "One", "Enter Sandman", and Many others. See for yourself.

  • @thechronicmaster-baker7172

    1. The slow introduction: it symbolizes the feeling of aggression and loss that the band suffers due to their loss.
    2. Solo #1: represents the whole feeling of anger of Kirk Hammett.
    3. The interlude (slow part of the intro): it represents the acceptance of the loss of the 3 remaining members, and the going forward in their honor.
    4. Solo # 2: represents how deeply the death of Cliff Burton has affected them.
    5. On the return of the heavy part, they pay tribute to Cliff by reading the poem, his last composition, and continue with the tribute doing just what Cliff would have expected of them, to move forward with the music.
    6. Upon reaching the end, the song returns to the classic style of the introduction, symbolizing the memory of Cliff, which will never end. The final riff is suddenly interrupted, symbolizing the end of Cliff's life, cut short by death at such a young age.

I have 2 songs I would love to see you react to. They are obscure. One more so than the other, so I doubt anyone else will request these, but I would love to hear your reaction to Blind Melon's Mouthful of Cavities and I Won't Be the Same by Abandon Jalopy. The singer of Blind Melon died back in the 90s. Abandon Jalopy is the band of the bass player from Blind Melon. The song. I Won't Be the Same is about the dead singer of Blind Melon (Shannon Hoon)....

This video went up a while ago, dunno if someone spoke to the question about why not live. Many of there songs are modded a bit to play live and mostly they come off solid or some even better like some flat tuned fade to blacks.
This song however, they just never could get right enough to be comfortable playing it live. From several angles. Many real nerds about this song will not as wolf did with Robs playing of pulling teeth, it feels like a reach and just worked so much better in the studio. That track was fire.
