Chasing squalls in the doldrums - Noronha to the Caribbean - Sailing Greatcircle (ep.336)

  • The doldrums around the equator are known for their enormous no-wind areas but also for a series of squalls and thunderstorms. We try to slalom in this area and are constantly caught between looking for wind and avoiding too much wind.
    And then there is the rain, this time it's raining outside and inside the boat

    That rain squall looked bad, more rain and wind. Good time to get even wetter and wash the boat down....lol

    Crossing the equator on Doris”s twee motte, that’s funny. Never forget that song … I call her Charlotte and him I call Bas… 😅congrats on the anniversary. ..Did you find where the water came from? 200 litre that’s no joke.

    If you can run that hose off the back deck it'll work more efficiently then going up to the galley sink. Even popwerful pumps raising the water 20cm will lose some effectiveness. Best rule is get the end of the hose as low as possible. On a boat that's sea level. Then everything at that level and above near the pump is free. So maybe your hull bilge is 1m below sea level, and you can get the hose out a hatch or off the back deck close to sea level... then all your pump is working against is that 1 meter. This is the siphon method, so a large bubble in the hose cancels this.
    At this point there's probably nothing that can stop you. Congratulations on your silver anniversary!

      In the end we put the pump there where the problem originated and the hose just on the trampoline. Still about a meter but that worked fine

    At least you didn't have to face dying of thirst in the doldrums LOL. I hope the leak is found :)

      That’s for sure. Probably it was just a plastic label blocking the drain and at a certain point the water has to go somewhere. Happy we found it and know what to check next time

    On the way back from Oahu to Morro Bay, on wind and used squalls like a pin ball machine to get wind. In a steel 60' cutter I needed 20 knots to get some speed so I understand thaat later, squalls are nott your friend

    Dang. How much chain did you put out in 25m of water and that swell? 125m? You carry that much?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Guga and Rodolfo arranged a heavy mooring for us, so no chain at all. We carry 70m of chain plus 50m of rope
