Why Rental Car Companies Are Ditching Electric Vehicles for Gas Cars

  • Rental-car company is the latest to be hit by weak demand for electric cars. Hertz Global Holdings Inc. said Thursday it is selling about 20,000 electric vehicles from its fleet, or about one-third of the total, in the latest sign that the EV revolution is stalling amid weak demand from consumers.
The move is aimed at better balancing supply and expected demand for EVs, allowing the car-rental company to scrap a disproportionate number of lower-margin rentals and reduce damage expenses associated with EVs.
Collision and damage costs for EVs remained high in the fourth quarter, Hertz said in a regulatory filing. That’s because EVs require special tools and parts and specialist knowledge to repair after a crash, more so than traditional gas-powered vehicles.
The charge is on top of the depreciation costs the company expects to record in the quarter in the ordinary course of managing its fleet.
Hertz will continue to offer EVs but will implement measures to boost profitability, including by expanding infrastructure such as charging stations and expanding relationships with EV makers, particularly as it relates to more affordable access to parts and labor, the company said.
Hertz will reinvest in additional internal-combustion-engine vehicles and expects to improve profits or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, across 2024, as vehicles are rotated.

Time is money in business car rental and vacation rental.
Also there was a much higher collision rate in their EV fleet. Some were renting them to race and performance drive for a one time thrill...but did not have familiarity and driving skill to match their speed or acceleration
There is also the novelty factor of isn't this interesting....but once is enough for that.
Hertz bought a bunch of Priuses 20 years ago. People got to try them and some decided to buy them later...but a dangerously overpowered race sedan those were not and Toyota had a stockpile of repair parts...Tesla does not.

20 minutes for 200 miles isn't good. It's definitely not smart to go on a road trip and plan on getting whatever your maximum range is, you would stop in between that max range. (If my max range in a gas vehicle is 50 miles I'm generally not going to try to go that 50 miles it's time to stop asap) so with a smaller overall range and (currently) less opportunities to charge than gas stations you would be very silly think any reletivly long road trip in an ev car will go as well as with gas. Possible yes but undeniably it's going to add significant time to long trips...and long trips suck enough already.

Not that many chargers let you charge a EV in 20minutes. That is if they give you like 200kWh+ charging, but most here are at most 50kWh, so that Tesla Model S is charged in 2 hours. Many charging stations share charging capacty. so if you are alone, it goes fast.. if its 7 other cars, you dont get that many kWh

Hertz offered me a Tesla on a recent business trip to Houston. I took it just to see what it was like to drive one. The acceleration was a blast, however it took me 20 minutes to figure out how to adjust the side view mirrors. I had to keep an eye on my remaining charge, knowing that I would've probably been stranded if I ran out of battery. The major upside was no fuel surcharge for returning the car "empty".

Couldn't agree more. The biggest problem I have is the misinformation surrounding EV's. They promote them as being "good" for the environment. This couldn't be further from the truth. The only difference is the propulsion system. A gas engine burns fuel to operate. An EV burns fuel to charge (in most areas). Oil production involves a form of mining. Battery manufacturing requires a form of mining. Both are made with tremendous amounts of plastics (a derivative of crude oil and natural gas). It could be argued that an EV is slightly less harmful to the environment but stating it is "good for the environment" is just false. But hey, "They can't put it on the internet if that isn't true.".

The hourly charge rate was more expensive than gas. All the other chargers in the area either required me to download an app, they were level 1 or 2 only, or they just didn't work. The cost is currently £7k in the uk to replace the battery (less if you are just replacing part). In 10-12 years, given the increasing popularity of EVs this will be even less. You need a myriad of different apps to use them, many of which won't download, and prices are astronomical. Works out at double the cost of diesel, if you have to charge away from home. Until things improve, EV ownership simply isn't viable for most people.

There is a problem with the cars. First the batteries are more dangerous. Theyre more susceptible to damage and when damaged they can cause a fire that is much more difficult to put out. Manufacturers have been advising people to charge outside so if it catches fire your house doesnt burn down. Accidents are much more likely to total the vehicles due to battery damage. Repairer dont want to repair damaged packs because of liability. Which leaves replacement as the only viable option for many. Replacement of the pack means Replacement of all the heating and cooling systems as well as the battery managment system that monitors the heat and charge of the battery. This is prohibitively expensive. Used cars dont sell well. Its hard to sell a used ev when you cant get a good look at the battery internals or expect an expensive battery replacement.

Whilst I appreciate the need to save the planet, the cost of doing so will and is leaving the vast majority of decent hardworking people unable to afford (as is being seen with EV’s) the costs involved by having to replace all fossil fuel type heating etc etc.
We in the UK are experiencing similar issues, EV sales have slowed here too.
The race for NET ZERO is being forced upon the people by stupid, gormless and inept Politicians who are excellent at coming up with unsustainable ideas, ie for EV’s they are threatening manufacturers with massive fines unless they produce a certain % of EV vehicles however, the same stupid, gormless and inept Politicians did not give one thought as to the charging structure or the Electricity demands required as currently we have no Country wide charging structure nor the capability to meet electricity demand.

Ford jumped in with both feet and built a billion dollar plant in Tennessee to produce 60 plus trucks per hour right now in the pilot plant in Michigan we have cut production to 10-15 per hour and cut 2 production shifts because they are not selling, it looks like Ford has been sucked in by the Biden White House and their green energy plan and most likely will have an assembly plant that will be mothballed before it can be opened.

kW/hour costs double what gas costs. Battery replacements are frequent and very expensive. Insurance costs are about to be 5 fold for EVs now that more EVs are catching fire and it takes very specialized equipment to put them out because they burn like blowtorches and dont require oxygen to burn. That means any garage/house/parking garage is more likely to burn down when an EV spontaneous combusts. Insurance companies might not even cover EVs at all, soon.

EV's are the biggest SCAM in modern times!
    The FACTS:
    EV's cost nearly 100% more than an ICEV - Entry-level Tesla Model 3 - $50,000 VS Chevy Malibu - $25,000
Charging an EV to FULL takes ~90 minutes on a special L3 charger, if you can find one VS 5 mins to "recharge/refuel" an ICEV
272 miles of range for a Tesla Model 3 vs 400-500 miles of range on a Chevy Malibu
EV's just aren't able to compete with ICEV's when it comes to ease of use, reliability and convenience. It will be a LONGGG TIMEEE before electric cars garner even a 25% market share in the automotive world.

@@diani748 And I can tell you haven't bought a Tesla lately, like my neighbor has. $40k, but like a typical EV fanboy, you forgot all the incidentals...you didn't add the taxes, fees, surcharges, paperwork transfer fees, registration and tag transfer fees and the Tesla delivery fee, which is $1500 alone. All in all, over $45,000 for a car that you have to mold your life around, as my neighbor is now learning the hard way.

      The FACTS:
The Tesla model 3 lists for $40,630 including destination fee.
The Chevrolet Malibu lists for $26,195 including destination fee.
Taxes and dealer fees apply to both cars.
      The Tesla costs 55% more.
I’m not a fanboy, I’d rather buy the Chevy.
      Your not a mathematician.

The Malibu has a 474 mile epa range.

Imagine being late to catch a flight than realising your range plummeted because it's cold 🥶❄️
In a Ice you stop for 4 minutes and put Fuel, on a EV you lost the flight 😢

I don’t forget about all their lawsuits for their shady practices filing false police reports for stolen vehicles on their customers.
