I'm changing everything in 2024 (well almost everything) about Dream Prague. I hope you will come along for the adventure!
Nenapsal bych to lépe.
Přesně tak. Nebudu tu tapetovat zeď. Vatslav to shrnul pěkně a my ti Jen všichni držíme palce.
Brave decision. I’m trying to learn Czech right now, and for the first time in my life, I can understand how Frenchmen, Italians and English speakers must feel when they learn my native German. I got fluent in all those three as a teenager and thought it was fun. Now learning Czech is something I only do for my pleasure - but it’s an exercise in masochism.
Haha!!!👍👍👍😄
Half of Czech word are from German - hřbitov from Friedhof, muset. from muessen
@@happyfelix1440 Half? Bulshit 😊
@@happyfelix1440 well, that’s a limited amount of help, especially considering there’s also czech words like stůl...
Don't worry, for us Czechs learning German also feels like masochism 😅
Please never quit Czech or your channel. You rule, Jen!
Jen,
In February 2023, I innocuously searched CZcams for 'Czech News in English' and came across your parody video "America's #1 Source for Czech News" video. This simple discovery completely transformed my life last year.
I went on to watch several of your videos and learned about iTalki. This led to me signing up for Czech lessons to resurrect a basic start I made to the language almost 30 years ago, and also rekindle my study of the German language which I had not seriously studied since my teens.
I cannot tell you what a transformation your channel has had on my life. I have weekly Czech classes with my teacher and I study the language daily. Studying languages again has brought a new vigour to my life, improved my overall wellbeing and alongside your channel, has rekindled my love of all things Czech.
I never imagined that one simple video discovery could have such a massively positive impact on my life. I am delighted that you will be producing more videos in 2024 in Czech. Thank you for adding subtitles to them. I wish you every success in your goals for the year and will be eager to see your progress. Good luck from Ireland.
Přeji mnoho zdraví, štěstí a úspěchů v novém roce.
ted jste ji tim milym clovekem asi pekne zacvicil v gramatice :P:P:P.
As an American who lived in Brno for less than 2 years, practiced Czech for about a year (and was addicted to your channel), it was enjoyable to listen to your Czech. I was able to hear all the words and understand, as opposed to native speakers who simply can’t slow down. By the way, I thought the reason you started this channel a few years ago was to learn Czech. It seems your new goal is a natural next step. Good luck!
S pozdravem LuckyLukeCZ
I admire your channel and I think it also brings a very nice sense of comfort for us czechs I'd say :) We also love when we're talked about, even though many won't acknowledge our little inner patriots.
I love how you express yourself in the Czech language! Your intonation is so good and it’s fascinating to watch you switch between those two different ‘identities’! Honestly, well done and I can’t wait to hear you speak czech some more 👏🏻💕
Oh, interesting, I didn't realize my two identities were coming out! Thanks for the encouragement!
This is not embarrassing at all!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 You rock and we are so happy that you like our language so much 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Úžasný pokrok a skvělá předsevzetí, držím palce a přeji jejich úspěšné zvládnutí. 👍👍
Vyborne. I lived in Prague for 15 months 25 years ago and I still retain a lot of vocabulary. I will look forward to an improvement in my sentence construction watching your videos as I find you very easy to understand. 👏🏼
Kudos! Czech is a hard language to learn due to sheer amount of grammar. I would recommend Czech/English 50/50. You will retain your english speaking audience and entertain us Czechs :D
Mám rád i ta anglická.
U are a very good English teacher and u teach many non English speaking audience English language. I'm not sure if u are aware of this. Your work is amazing and it reminds me Prague beauty. If it's possible 50% English and 50% Czech. Přeji vše nejlepší do roku 2024.
Kudos to you. I am rooting for you.
I wish you best of luck with your goals! Happy new year 😊
You can do it!! I'm so excited 😊🎉
I will miss your English with your clear and perfect pronunciation. I look forward to enjoy your sweet Czech at the same time. Jste skvela!!!
Jen, I absolutely admire your plan to improve Czech language and your decision to speak Czech on the channel. However, I like your English and to be honest I watch the channel because it is in English and of course because you have good topics and it is funny as well. So, I would prefer if you make one video in Czech and the next one in English or something like that. Thanks
I totally get it! I still plan on making one English video a month with Honza, because I know there are some people who watch to learn English. and also I have so much to say that I can't quite express in Czech! But I had to make a choice. Making videos takes so much time, and it was truly getting in the way of my Czech improvement, ironically. So I hope you'll stick around for those fewer English videos!
I¨m the same, and I have concerns about target group of this videos
totally agree 🙂
Moc se těšim, na Vaši češtinu. To zvládnete, základy máte výborné.
Amazing! Love this content. Looking forward to learning Czech, it's lovely to hear you speaking it and learning as you go. Very inspiring, thank you Jen!
I love your decision! Such an amazing idea. Fingers crossed. I think the content will be super interesting.
Jsi vyborna a sympaticka. Pozdravuji z Moravy
I subscribed to you literally in the past week as I'm going out to travel around the Czech Republic for two weeks from next week, and I'm so glad I did. Best of luck, and appreciate your content!
good luck on your journey to master czech!
I loved all your videos, but it's cool you still include a bit of english in this video, i especially loved the part where you broke down the sentence with the mistake and then the correct version. much love❤❤❤.
never stop rocking.
To je skvělé rozhodnutí! Držím palce!!
Tak se čiňte, Jen. Je to zajímavé novoročné předsevzetí. Přeji hodně štěstí a budu pozorně sledovat Vaše úsilí. :-)
Preju mnoho uspechu!!!
Very good for your progress in the Czech language!
Thank you Robert!
|Už tě sleduji pár let a musím říct "WOW"!
Very sweet. Fakt skvělý.
Ahoj Jen! Happy New Year!!
Držím palce, aby se Vám to podařilo. Jste skvělá a máte hodně dobře našlápnuto. Přeji pevnou vůli a ostatní se poddá. Standa.
to je super
Good for you, Jen! Learning another language like a native speaker is the hardest thing to learn. But your determination and motivation will take you there! ❤🎉 All the best to 2024!
Super❤
Supeeer! Držím pěsti!!!
Big kudos! And thank you for motivation. After 2 years living in Hamburg, I finally wanna do something with my German to get from my “SupermarktDeutsch” to a decent B2. So I’ll work on my German … a ty zlom vaz s češtinou ;)
Wow. I look forward to seeing more videos in Czech. I think it will help you with progress in Czech. Good luck!
And I am glad you don't quit your channel. It feel like at least want to just hear from you, k knowing you are doing alright.
Well done 🥳🤩 keep going. You are inspiring my partner who is learning Czech too 😊
This is great. So cool hearing you speak Czech so much. And you are pretty good. Tak do toho, dzim palce a preji vsechno nej nej nej v roce 2024.
Aw, thank you!
Logicky. Tenhle kanál sledují hlavně diváci v ČR.
I’m so excited for you to be a part of Toastmasters. I’m on a current hiatus due to having small children but was a member for over 20 years. It was life changing in many ways and I also met a lot of really interesting people who were likeminded in their pursuit of personal growth. I’d recommend you video your speeches. I think you’ll be amazed by your progress and growth. It’s also interesting to visit other clubs when you travel if you can fit it in to your schedule.
I also loved that you alluded to the fact in one of your responses that you are making changes to your channel so that you can combine your language learning journey with making videos. I’m trying to get better at combining activities too (for example reading for fun in foreign languages rather than English). It often feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything we need and want to.
Jen keep on going, you are doing a great job. I have an English wife who knows only 3 words in Czech ( Pivo, okno a kuře) and after many years (16) we have made no progress. Your Czech is great and i love listening to you and watching your videos.
This new years decisions mostly don't last. I hope yours will. Good luck!
You are amazing! Czech is really hard even for natives!
Hi there You speak very good Czech. Thumb Up.
Miluju tvá videa ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Jen! I love watching your videos in English, purely for enjoyment, but picking over your videos in Czech will really help me - I´m quite a bit behind you.
I'm so glad you'll keep watching! I hope to always have the english subtitles too so hopefully that can help if you need them.
We really like watching your videos! Great content, factual information and always funny. We prefer English speaking videos, but will for sure stay loyal to videos in Czech too. Thank you for everything you are doing.
nice myšlenka my dear Džen , u speak very nice v češtině , těším se na this upgrade , u r the best ,,, happy nový rok 4 u and Honza a Tobík
You are doing so well!!! I remember our classes in zizkov when I met you. I’ll have to look into toastmasters too
Aw thank you! It seems that class was a decade ago and I thought I’d be fluent by now 😭. Yes! If you’re interested our club is called Prague business Toastmasters and you can join as a guest and come to a couple meetings without becoming a paying member, just to see if it interests you. Guests come all the time! I love it. And you get to meet so many international people living here.
Ahoj, přeji vše nej a mnoho úspěchů v novém roce
Hezký den 🙂 Tom
Díky Tome!
I was taught Czech ...in Czech. From Day 1, not one word of any language except Czech was spoken in the class. It was great !
Happy New Year!
Great channel, I like it very much. Have you thought about being an Italki teacher? I would love it :)
Super!
I love you. I learn with duolingo
Ahoj Jennifer,
Sir_Mac je tu!
Ať se ti v roce 2024 daří!
Protože jsi statečná, podpořím tě ve tvé statečnosti tím, že Ti budu psát česky, (no more english).
Sir_Mac
Držím päste, nech ti to vyjde. Budem sledovať tvoje pokroky.
Love it. Your american accent is so cute. I look forward to hearing it more.
Wow, thanks! I am trying to get rid of the American accent. but I guess that's true of anyone learning a foreign language.
Don't worry I believe 99.9% people will support and encourage you in this brave undertaking. The Czech people love it when a foreigner has the incentive and drive to learn their language, because it does not happen very often. And the linguistic slip-ups that will happen on your journey will actually be fun and spice of a progress. You are awesome :)
Držím palce!
moc děkují!
Really excited about this change, honestly! I'm in a similar boat right now (trying to improve my Czech to B1) so your (new) videos are extremely motivating for me personally. Adding a baby to the mix is not exactly helping my goals at the moment which means I need all the motivation I can get! One Czech lesson per week hasn't been cutting it for awhile so have been trying to make a plan to start with iTalki. Hodne stesti s tvym cilem!
Good for you! Yeah, the one-lesson-per-week method wasn't working for me either. Have you tried listeing to Slow Czech podcast? I find listening to be the most valuable. And I'll listen to the same podcast 10 times if I have to. Držím palce!
@@DreamPrague Been meaning to give it a go for ages! Will have to make time. I've enjoyed the short news broadcasts from the textbook Czech Step by Step online section (I'm sure you are also well acquainted with these textbooks!). It's so helpful to listen and then read the transcript :)
👍👍👍!!!
As a native czech speaker I would like to gratz you to your progression. Czech language is pretty difficult, and by my experience with foreigners - compared to them you do it very well - respect. Even with words with diacritics ( ˇ ´). Which surprised me the most.
Hi Jen! My resolution for 2024 is 1600x900, but yours is much better 👍🏽
😂🤓
Go for it! Czech is easy. It’s like a Lego in fact. Trust me, I made it myself 😉
Don’t quit this channel, I love it. You have a great perspective and Good eye for things, which people who live here for a long time don’t notice.
And last thing from me. I remember one your video where you was talking about Czech people always correcting foreigners because they are not used to accents. It’s not because of that. It’s just a way they are trying to support you and help you learn this language right on the first try, because fixing wrong habits is much worse than learning them right from the start. I was happy for that because it helped me more than anything else. Group of people who were constantly correcting me. 🤗
OMG you are just amazing. Please keep some English involved cuz I am learning a lot from you. And btw: I really had no clue how hard my language is. Its so different when you grow up in it and your brain just sucks it in. Good luck, you got this.
Good for folks learning the Czech language. Too bad for me or others who enjoyed Jen's insightful portraits of Czech history, culture, cuisine, efforts to navigate Czech administration, and daily life,.
Dear Jennifer, good for you. You can watch American films and TV shows in Czech dubbing. 🤩👏 What about Honza and his Czech?
Tak to ti teda držím palce Jenn.
Doufám že ti nevadí že ti tykám. 🙂
Já opravdu obdivuji cizince kteří opravdu vynikají v Češtině protože pro Cizince kteří nejsou Slované to opravdu není lehké.
Takže všecko nejplepší do nového roku.
super, drzim palce a nějak to půjde, po case lip a lip :)
Happy new year
First try to build only short complete sentences .
Relax your muscles while talking.. no need to be too stressed
A small humble advice … instead of those online one to one try yo go out with a native friend on a cup of coffee have the same conversations or for a walk
Good step forward
Wish you the best
Cool decision! We're looking forward to it! You speak Czech in a way that is mostly understandable but I if I were you, I'd insist that your Czech teachers correct your mistakes right away anytime you make them so that you're aware of them and can get better :). It seems like they don't correct all of your errors. Well done anyway, and keep it up!
Obviously, when you speak it's not good to correct immediately as the communication/understanding is most important. I am sure it's one of the rule, if you do grammar exercise, then correction are absolutely fine. Talking is very different.
Jen do toho! Bude záznam z přednášky? Těším těším🤩
Coming from someone who attended one example session with Toastmasters and is native Czech and fluent in English, I would translate what they do/practice as "projev" not "přednáška." Přednáška is more of an educative speech, they focus more on public speaking techniques not necessarily always with emphasis on the educative aspect of it so projev seems more fitting in my opinion. :)
Thank you for this clarification. Aneta taught me projev, but I guess I didn't put that part in the video. I am now clear on the difference, thank you!
@@DreamPragueI would rather say proslov, because přednáška takes place in a school and projev is mainly used on elections or demonstrations. proslov is the most neutral IMO.
Will there be English subtitles? I’m learning Czech & am so excited about this decision of yours! ❤
Yes I will do my best to always have English subtitles too 🤓
@@DreamPrague Yayyyy! And, I will do my best to learn enough Czech to not need them 😄
perhaps do booth laungiches might be more feasible,
0:30 Good move! (I suggested it 😁) You probably know that, but still... there is a literary czech and a spoken czech. I advise you to be cautious with the latter.
Nobody, but nobody learns conjugation and declension by studying grammar 😉
Kudos, I am still working on my french and few weeks ago I started japanese, I reckon that Czech is something similar - f***ing difficult
Wow, I'm really impressed! I'd like to start with French, but I think I'll wait until I'm B2 with Czech so I don't confuse them. My brain can only take to much.
I want to thank you for recommending the film ''Pelisky,'' in your previous vlog. I never would have known of its existence. otherwise . I will also look at some of the other sites for Czeck films. I've tried to watch some but with no success getting English subtitles, One I especially want to see is ''Sluzka,'' with my favorite actress, Anna Geislerova. I miss living in Prague terribly and the Prague 5 neighborhood film location ''took me home.''' At the end of the film, when the Russians were on their way, I thought of a conversation I had with the head of the Foreign Police (I was getting a visa). I asked him what his greatest fear was, and he said that the phones would begin ringing to say Russian tanks were coming down the roads towards Prague.
Oh wow, that's a terrifying feeling for that poor foreign police officer! I'm so glad you liked Pelišky. I always think of it as a comedy, but then when I watch it I remember how very sad it is.
Back to the conversation in the Foreign Police office. Prior to my question about the fear of invasion, , the conversation had centered on the belief that the Moon landing had all been faked and that the collapse of the building, floor by floor, on 9/11 was caused by the American government to ensure invading Iraq. Several other policemen had joined us and all were adamant that the films shown on the news proved what they were claiming. By then, it was 5 pm and I think we all enjoyed our cultural exchange.
you know i still cant properly imagine how hard it is for foreigners to learn czech, but you give me a better idea and make me appreciate more being a native
Yep, quite hard. The hard part is that it takes so much knowledge just to say one sentence properly. In that way I think it's easier to have basic sentences in English.
Yup i agree, but dont give up, youre on the right track, having a goal or motive is important, also thanks for italki, i didnt know about it, might use it for my learning as well
This will be great for me learning Czech☺️ When we are there I can understand better than speak! Lol I’ve worked daily 4 years of Duolingo. It’s been a good starter but I am not learning to conjugate. It’s time to move forward and take the next step. Thank you for your charge. It’s forces me to move forward to enjoy your channel☺️
That's so great Kathy! Kick past Duolingo! If you like apps, I started using Glossika and I like it. And of course, there's always conversations with italki teachers ;). Slow Czech has a great podcast at levels A1-B2 I believe, check her out!
You should think about conversation with TadyGavin, completely in czech :)
Well done! Zlepšila ses v ČJ o 100% a v Tvém gólu Tě podporuju - už ale mluvíš super 🎉. Těším se na další videa!
Jsi uzasna. Cestina neni lechka rec. Drzime Vam palce. Venca a Delije z Kalifornije. 😊❤
Ahoj Kalifornie! Doufám že si užívaté slunce za mě.
Finally 👏 to promote life in the Czech Republic and not to be speaking Czech for so long, it makes absolutely no sense 🙃
No matter how well you speak, your efforts will bring you the admiration of everyone ♥
Congratulations, I'm back among your subscribers 👍
There is a question about who your channel was intended for. Whether for locals or foreigners. And also to whom broadcasting in Czech will help. For example, I tried to improve my English on your channel (with Czech subtitles running)
Dear Jen, I fully agree w/ radimfoucek8765 comment. Please🙏🏻 continue w/ this chanel and keep the combination of English and Czech in your videos. That’s what we love on it. 😉 Btw, did you&Honza changed your location from flat in Vinohrady to some family hapouse? We love you both!👋
Jenn, watching you improve your language skills is so fascinating! I cant even imagine how difficult it is to learn Czech for foreigners! :)
