If your mirrorless camera has trouble focussing in the dark, use a DSLR.
The other night in the park, 1hr past sunset, my 5D4 + 400mm + 1.4x F8 focussed instantly on a Kookaburra @ iso 102400 that I cwould barely see with my own eyes. Sure the shot was as noise as, but the point is, instant focus, @ F8 !

Also, learn how to use flash compensation and lower the power when using a pop-up flash because it is always too hot if you cannot bounce it or diffuse the flash.
Sometimes I still use the popup flash for certain photos hardly ever straight on unless it's just to add a catch light in the eyes.
A coffee filter is a good diffuser.
Most cameras you cannot bounce the flash like the Sony cameras but you can if you use a small piece of white card stock or a business card to aim the flash upward with an angle.
Depending on your model if the camera has built-in radio to trigger speedlights, the flash popup but does not flash. If it has no radio use the popup flash to trigger speedlights in slave mode.

    Hi!
Thank you for the guide especially for considering APS-C shooters!
    Question,
What do you suggest for the metering?
I usually set it to manual but I set the ISO from 100-5000 range. (Given your tutorial I would max it to 3200 instead)
Should I stop using ISO range or is there a correct setting for metering?
    Thank you!
