    G chord was the one that frustrated me most when I started learning how to play an ukulele. Actually it made me search on youtube and find your channel :D Now after a month I can switch between basic chords and I am amazed by the transition *_* Your videos helped me a lot so I’m very grateful to you!
    Btw, the way you excercised reminded me of the app - Yousician - I was using very often when I first started learning. Do you know about it? I find it very helpful espceially for a pure beginner.

    Haha! Best advice at 1:03! You have no idea how many times I’ve said those exact words ...and there’s no nice way to say it. And for beginners it’s just 3 fingers! They can grow the other 7 nails as long as they want. Thank Miss B! Your the best!

    👍Very good video. Something that helps me switching from C to G is to play C with my ring finger while keeping my middle finger on the 2nd fret of the A string. Then it's only a matter of moving the other two fingers for G.☼💗🎾

    You are sooooo good at breaking things down. First time tried to play uke quit. Now I'm teaching myself with multiple teachers on you tube. You are at the top of my list. Learning a fingerpicking technique for Auld Lang Syne. Couldn't make the switch from C to G. Went to you tube. Found this video. So great. My new method of learning is to try to really know something before moving on. So for the next couple of days I'll work on switching from C to G based I what I learned in this video. Because that can become boring, each day I also work on learning a strumming technique and to reward myself I try to learn a blues lesson - because I really love that. Thank you for all your great videos. They are integral to my learning. I'll be 74 in March.

    Ms B! Thank you so much for emphasizing the Need of incorporating a metronome into daily practice! As a former drummer, (and I know you played drums too), currently my primary instrument is the bass guitar, it's so important for everyone learning to play an instrument to know that Time is more than just a magazine. (Insert Rim Shot here). Your students will be so much better as a musician for having learned a Very important concept, actually Vital to making Good music. You are indeed a Brilliant teacher, my thanks for all you do and the thorough instruction you give.

Don't know if it was you or YT but perfect timing. That works for you and us. If you have control where adds appear its a win-win. All about the FUNdamentals. Thanks for the 5 bpm tip. I was all over the place with the metronome. These videos are so great as I have so many songs still to learn. Smart to demo with the metronome, Bernadette! Music is like comedy; to be really good at it, a person has to master the timing.
    And super-smart to advise people to always think ahead.
    I use ukulele to teach creative writing (because it’s easy to sing while strumming an ukulele and writing song lyrics forces people to think of writing as what it is-not recorded thought, but recorded sound). So, as a first step, it’s necessary to teach most of my students some fundamentals of playing ukulele.
    Today, I showed a lady how to play G7-Em7-G (a chord progression that shows up in early Beatles songs such as “Love Me Do”) by first playing G7 conventionally, then lifting the index finger to play Em7, and then setting down the pinky to finish with G.
    It is an exercise that offers an instant reward: three chords! Woo-hoo! It is also an exercise that involves all four fingers. Plus it plants the idea that, sometimes, you can use an unconventional fingering to quickly switch to a commonly used chord.
    And it’s fun!

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic
      @BernadetteTeachesMusic  Pƙed 6 lety +2

      Hi Tom! It's always really nice to hear from other teachers because I pick up new learning techniques and strategies. I LOVE what you are doing with your creative writing students! They are lucky to be learning from an artist and poet like yourself!
      If you're using a metronome with your students and you'd like something more engaging than a metronome, try this czcams.com/video/8NP2NuSsWbs/video.html this is what I use with my students when the metronome feels too dull.
      I like your G7-Em-G exercise!!! That's also good for stretching the hand and using the pinky! I might have to borrow that ;)
      And you are right. Music and comedy are all about the timing. I guess this is why I always like comedians who have a good beat to their voice :)

    This is SUUUUPER helpful. One thing I struggle with learning on my own is a lot of videos/ books etc. Go from "this is how you play C chord" go on now let's play this song with three chords and never cover tips for building the skills. THIS really covers the skill drills necessary. When I learned piano, cello, and sax as a kid / tween so much of the early stuff was scales and skill drills. So far, I haven't found as much for uke. I know... only 4 strings so simple, but not really! Lol. Currently also trying to get the hand strength to not have "fly away fingerss" to properly make some of the chords, I need to use the free fingers as leverage (or so it seems). Thank you for this!

  • @sud_monkey
    @sud_monkey Pƙed 6 lety +18

    When you transition between chords it appears that the fingers on your left hand all leave the neck. Is the neck of your ukulele resting between your left thumb and index finger, or are you clamping your ukulele in position with your right forearm?
    I find this to be the hardest part of chord transitions; moving my fingers without feeling like the neck of my ukulele will drop.

    • @SusanWang126
      @SusanWang126 Pƙed 3 lety +3

      I wish there was a response to this because I am having a difficult time with this! I thought we were supposed to have our thumbs on the back of the neck but then nothing is "clamping" the ukelele in place if I am also strumming with the index finger and not holding the waist. Forearm clamping isn't working to keep it in place. I have to rely on a strap to be able to transition. Did you find a solution, since this comment is 2 years old and I just started today? haha

    • @sud_monkey
      @sud_monkey Pƙed 3 lety +1

      @@SusanWang126 As far as I can tell some chord transitions don’t happen in one movement. For example, if I was transitioning from C to F my 3rd finger would remain on the A string’s 3rd fret while my 1st finger moves to the E string’s 1st fret. Then my 3rd finger comes off, my hand pivots, and my 2nd finger moves to the G string’s 2nd fret. This way the neck is always clamped between thumb and a finger. Of course, I don’t if this is the correct way to do it!

      @@sud_monkey Wow that just made my transition from C to F much less scary haha! Didn’t feel like I had to land on the strings in perfect position, could take my time to walk it over. Thanks!

    I got my first Uke a week ago for my birthday and I've been trying to learn a song but messed up everytime I went to G. This video is a blessing! And what great timing oh my! I never comment on posts but I felt the need to share this because I'm genuinely so relieved. And I also want to mention, I'm learning ukulele on my own and your channel has been so helpful so thank you!! I have a video suggestion- tips on learning the ukulele alone (without a teacher/aid). Thanks for everything Bernadette ❀

    Hi Bernadette and thank you for all the lessons you share with us!!! I have a question about the G chord and the G7 chord. I really have a hard time with using the G chord but the G7 chord is easy to take for me. I know that they are different in music theory but if I go searching for songs, I regularly find the same songs where sometimes they use the G chord and sometimes the G7 chord. Can I use the G7 chord all the time instead of G chord?

    Ah! This is such a useful video for beginners. I used to get so fustrated when my ring finger hit the string too late, but it was a matter of time for me until I mastered the G chord. I love your detailed videos and I am so thankful to have found your channel! And you are almost at 40k! đŸ˜± I can’t believe how fast your channel is growing! Could you also make a video for switching to the E chord?

      Hey Van! How are you? I am also thankful you found this channel :)
      Switching to G is the most popular chord request I get, so I knew I needed to create this resource for beginners. It's usually for people in their first month of uke.
      I can most definitely make a video about switching to E. Which chord are you switching from?

      Bernadette Teaches Music The last few weeks have been a bit stressful, but I am doing fine now. How are you? I believe you had a great time travelling! I have to switch from Am and from F#m to E. I came across this problem while learning “Someone Like You”, but I also struggle with it if I play other songs that have the E chord in it.
