  • The Belief Solo on 'Where The Light Is' is certainly a fan favourite tone of John Mayer's and also one of the more frequently asked questions when it comes to his gear. Today we will talk about the pedal John used for the solo tone of Belief and I Don't Need No Doctor during the Continuum Era.

I bought the WTLI DVD my freshman year in high school (2010). I still have that DVD up to this day.

Can I borrow it ( and a DVD player)?

I bought it the day it came out (summer after senior year HS) and me and my buddy Scott did nothing but drink beer and smoke all summer to it playing. His house was the spot so I left it there til I went to college and it was on 24-7.
I didn't watch it much after that but a handful of years later I decided to watch it in full (instead of parts on YT) and it was skipping like hell. Bought it on blu ray to replace it (I am a physical media person/collector) and retired the DVD to the garbage.

Just picked up an old V2 Micro Synth. Copying the exact settings from the Screenshot didn't work for me, but I was able to get the sound pretty much spot on!
If you get this pedal, you MUST know that there are two trim pots on the inside, which you have to use to calibrate the pedal to the output of your guitar. I was sure mine was broken until I discovered that!

Helix owner here. The octavia fuzz gives this kind of vibe but def doesn’t replace it. I know in the Axe FX there is a synth block…you might be able to try and mimic with that plus an octave blended in parallel with the rig?

I'd definitely be curious if anyone was able to replicate that sound better than I've been able to. I've used a BOSS OC-5, which I've since sold, and it sounded great for an use of an octave up, and it tracks well. But that PolySynth just has that something extra with those filter settings that, so far, I havent found another pedal which can do both.
Anyway, thanks for confirming the newer one isn't the same. I was very tempted to get one. Not going to now, though.

i’ve got a TC electronic Subnup and the toneprint feature is a god send. i mainly use tyler larson’s octavio style preset and it is super convincing especially paired with my fuzz face and keeley fuzz bender. plus poly mode has that ehx pog sound while classic mode has that analog boss OC sound. very budget friendly too

I also studied JM's tone. I made a short video without using a microsynth. Please take a look at it if you like.

I put this video together when I found one of these units for a steal a few months ago. I compare the original to an octava and a green ringer clone. The octava gets somewhat close and is what is on my board but the original unit definitely has a vocal sweep to it that is missing in the other options.

Not a huge Mayer fan, not familiar with this song, just sounds to me like you can get pretty close w an octavia type pedal. Maybe not spot on, but close enough for playing live/jammin.

At least 80% of John's tone comes from John's fingers. If you wanna sound like him, study his playing, not his gear.

IMO, the WTLI recording is one of the worst sounding performances of his, especially considering the production value. I'm sure the actual tones that are coming from his amp were amazing, it's just that the actual recording sounds insanely compressed and excessively flat to my ears. It's laughably bad, especially when compared to the masterpiece of mixing/recording of his Austin City Limits 2007 performance, which is the gold standard even to this day, IMO.
