    (08/23, add some information)
    an over-simplified explain here:
This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west",
and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙".
Practicing Buddhism or Taoism is a way of becoming "god/deities".
Animals can also receive supernature power, and they become "monster/demon/妖怪", not "god".
Here, monster/demon is not always evil, they are just different from humans.
In many stories, the monster can live with humans or even have a marriage with a human.
in those stories, humans are often more evil or stupid or greedy or coward...
The rank or class of this world is roughly like this:
    god/deities > monster > human > animal.
This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok.
So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god".
WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god",
he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics.
This contradiction is the source of many re-creations including this game.
From Wukong's point of view, the first half of book 'Journey to the West' is his rebellion against the regime of gods, while the second half is his redemption as a bodyguard of a mortal human, at the end of the journey, he gets the title "Winning Fighter Buddha"(斗战胜佛).
His performance before and after was so different that it is suspected that he died halfway and an impostor completed the journey. In this hypothesis, those readers denied his obedience in the latter half of the story, they asked " Can't wukong be himself, real, true self?"
Just think in another way, that wukong has always been himself all the way, such "tragedy" has a general meaning. At first, he fights against the world fearlessly, and at last, he compromised, "made peace with God".
wukong of the day is now paddling cell phone, waiting for the next subway :).
    Back to this trailer:
This trailer shows a monk tells a story that happens in a temple relic occupied by a group of monster gangsters.
-> The giant wolf boss at 7:38 is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest,
and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人"
he has a friend who is a black bear. but not shown in this game.
-> The minor boss at 2:53 is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth,
not a human with a wolf head.
An interesting point that is he is persuading the player to practice Buddhism while himself wearing cloth more like Taoism. But I don't think this is a mistake.
Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism are peacefully integrated inside ancient Chinese philosophy, although they have different origins.
The integration is so strong and stable and so connected to the social structure, that it became a shackle in the mind when the Chinese have to face the outer world in the last several centuries.
Among them, Buddhism is even imported from ancient India, the original story "journey to the west" is based on a real tang monk's pilgrimage and study to ancient India at around 630AD. But not many people in modern India believe in Buddhism. May I say it is a good thing that we do not establish crusades? :)
-> The little potato-like guy at 4:49 is "土地公/local earth god", a kind of minor god.
like a nymph in Greek myth, but not that pretty.
-> Many of you may wonder "why he is fighting cloud at the last scene at 12:00?"
he is fighting against god's army, the giants in the background are the generals of the gods.
also, a scene shows that he is facing four giants at 11:48, they are the four kings of heaven(四大天王).
Here also reflect the integration. In the original story, the army belongs to Taoism god, and four kings of heaven are Buddhism god. wukong was captured by a Buddhism god who received a request for help from Taoism god, then been a prisoner for 500 years before his redemption.
-> You guys may also be confused about why there is another monkey king with better weapon and better armor stop us from finishing the boss.
and spend several seconds showing shining gold characters on his stick at 10:44.
We Chinese guys are quite excited seeing this scene because it gets to the most suspenseful part of the story:
    Who is the real WUKONG?
whether the monkey king who finally becomes the god is the real monkey king who born from the stone?
(Is the hero at the end of the journey the same person when the journey starts?)
(are we still us when we grow up/old ?)
    if you look carefully enough,
you will find that the storyteller(at the beginning and end of the trailer) himself is an old "monkey" too.
the floating belt behind him indicating that he is a "god".
yes, there are multiple monkey kings and multiple explanations.
you can even take them as the "ego", the "id", the "superego" of the monkey king.
but it is best to let the game itself to explain it.
Here is some subtitle I translated.
(time according to original 13 min version)
(storytellers start telling, skip it cause it has English subtitle)
    (sneak in as a cicada)
1:46 wolf gangster A: wow! Here is some wine jar!
1:47 wolf gangster A: I wonder if there is any wine in it!
1:49 wolf gangster B: Do not be so greedy for wine!
1:50 wolf gangster B: We two would be 灵虚真人's snack if we mess this up!
    (keep flying)
1:57 wolf gangster C: Brother, there is some noise at the gate.
1:58 wolf gangster D: Don't be so jumpy. No one dares to intrude here as I guard here.
    (meet an elite enemy)
2:12 gangster leader(human): Those wolf puppies can not see you.
2:15 gangster leader(human): DO NOT think you can get away with it under MY nose!
    (fight at a bridge)
2:33 wolf scout: Alarm! A hairy face monk intruder!
    (minor boss fight)
2:48 wolf sword drillmaster: who are you, dare to disturb my practice?
    (after seeing the player's character)
2:54 wolf sword drillmaster: oh, another monkey
2:59 wolf sword drillmaster: sir, why not drop your stick, and learn some Buddhism with me?
3:05 wolf sword drillmaster: how do you think?
    (after been beaten)
4:00 wolf sword drillmaster: you ... Can it be that you are the man... of...destiny as our king told us?
    (local earth god saying underground)
4:18 voice from underground: You're alarming the monsters over here, little monkey
    (meet huge head giant)
4:23 voice from underground: You should be more careful if you go any further.
4:30 voice from underground: come here, little monkey
4:38 voice from underground: here, here
    (local earth god show up)
4:47 local earth god: I am the humble local earth god of "black wind hill", and I am waiting here for a long time.
    ( he look closely )
4:58 local earth god: yes, you do look alike...
5:06 local earth god: Further on, you'll find the Guanyin (the goddess of mercy) Monastery
5:10 local earth god: It has prosperous good old days
5:15 local earth god: Too bad the big fire burned everything up.
(this fire should be related to a fire in the original story of "journey to the west")
5:26 local earth god: the monastery was rebuilt then,
5:29 local earth god: but what would rebuild a broken temple help if human's faith burned into ash?
    (wolf howling)
5:40 local earth god: excuse me for leaving so soon!....
5:45 local earth god: we will meet again after you go pass the plank road...
7:04 Guanyin (the goddess of mercy) Monastery
    (into the yard)
7:14 local earth god: hush, do not disturb that big dog...
7:17 local earth god: the monster in the backyard is a friend of BlackWind Monster. (black bear)
7:18 local earth god: he called himself "灵虚子"
7:20 local earth god: As your current capacity.....
    (7:22 wolf howling)
    7:23 local earth god: damn!
7:25 local earth god: RUN, you little monkey, before it's too late!
    (local earth god hidden)
7:30 local earth god: you CANNOT return if you pass this gate!
    (7:38 LEADER: 灵虚子)
    boss fight .....
(the scene between 11:00 and 12:05 showing his legends, just like Hercules' 12 labors)

There are so many details in the trailer which many people might not have noticed. So I have done some researches and the summary is below:
There are 4 skills (spells?) that appear at the left bottom corner.

Top = Golden Invincible Body. Wukong's signature defensive skill that offers temporary physical immunity while standing still, lasting for probably 0.25 to 0.5 seconds with 4-second cooldown. Similar to blocking skill in other ARPG but looks much cooler and is effective against attacks from all angles. If the attack is too strong, Wukong would still be pushed back or stunned for a while. If you have played DOTA 2, you would notice that Wukong's mischief skill also offer 0.2 second immunity for the very same reason.
Right = Morphing. Another Wukong's signature skill that allows him to morph into a cicada, hulk-like creature, or certain boss he defeated, lasting for 40 seconds with 60 seconds cooldown. While he morphs into a cicada, it allows him to move undetected (much cooler than crouching...). You can only morph once in every phase and you can end the morphing before 40 seconds duration. After morphing, you regain full HP, mana & stamina.
Left = Lockdown. A skill that locks the enemy in time for 0.5 second to 3 seconds depending on the strength of the target. The enemy will continue the action once the duration is over.
Bottom = Mirror Image. Creates multiple images of himself through his hair. The images are seemingly weak and could be easily destroyed.
Besides, you can see that there are many different fancy attack moves so you may wonder how is it possible. If you watch carefully at the right bottom corner, there are 3 different battle stances.
    1. Normal stance
    2. Defensive stance
    3. Assault stance
You can switch between stances instantly while not attacking or not being attacked.
Btw, I have no connection with the developers at all. The information is gathered by researching all online resources (mostly Chinese). There are many other interesting stuffs I found in the researching process. I will share more if you guys are interested.
    ==============================
    UPDATE
I have done some more researches about the Indie studio (Game Science) behind this game and found this interview with English subtitles.
    czcams.com/video/CTYoDre2S7I/video.html
You can see the founder playing the demo with an X-box controller. This clearly shows that a playable version is already available. Their office is located in a tech park in a sub-urban area near Hangzhou, which looks pretty cool. They chose this location so that the developers could remain focused on game development.
During the researches, I found a comment left by one of the developers in an online forum for Ninja Gaiden. I wept for his genuine words and would like to share my translated version here:
    My Translated Version:
Hello everyone. I am "Jie Ye". I am not sure if my comrades are still around and probably I don't know any of the new blood. You should have watched the trailer released this morning. I have been honored to participate in the development of Black Myth Wukong as the battle planner.
I have been making video games for 7 years, living an ignorable life and busy running around the country. Now I am getting close to 30.
I once lived in a tiny basement, without air-con in hot summer and survived on instant noodles for half a year. I don't ask for money, comfort, dignity or even my health. All I have been pursuing is to revive our country's action game, just one simple aspiration. All in a sudden 7 years have elapsed.
I am writing this with tears in my eyes. I love Ninja Gaiden, DMC, and all action games. This is the passion in my entire life.
Before the launch of the trailer, I was a bit worried. I didn't expect the feedback to be so great. At that moment I felt all my sacrifice and effort in the past are totally worthy.
From the first demo I started in 2018 to the complete trailer released today, everyone in the team has committed so much. Thank every brother and sister who made this happen and wove the dream together.
(In the trailer, you could see the execution of a heaven guard. I have researched similar moves by studying every move & camera mechanism in Ninja Gaiden in-depth. Hehe).
People are inherently dead, or heavier than Mount Tai, or lighter than a feather.
I don't want to give up my pursuit of authentic arts for ordinary matters. I am willing to devote my insignificant life to the great action game industry.
I am Ninja Dragon "Jie Ye"

for those who aren't familiar with Chinese literature and mythology, The monkey king Sun Wukong is a character in the Chinese novel Journey to the West written in the 16th century, depicting his journey along with his master, and 2 sworn brother's journey to the birthplace of buddhism to ask for the scripture. Goku from dragonball Z is loosely based on him.
Even though Wukong is capable of getting to the destination in one single backflip, but his master insisted on traveling all the way to India on foot, through the long journey they went through trials and tribulation, Wukong eventually grew from a "Yao" (Chinese terminology, similar to "wild/ evil spirits or monster", but Yao is not always evil) to eventually attain Buddhahood with his master and sworn brothers who have their own amazing story.
One of the brother Bajie was previously a Heavenly General, but got drunk in a Heavenly Palace banquet, and tried to get with the Goddess of the Moon, the Jade Emperor banished him to the mortal realm and was accidentally reincarnated into a pig sty, turning him into a pig man.
Wukong is capable of transforming into any object, animal or person or monster. shown in the game it seems like he can turn into any enemy that he defeated. he also have habit of shrinking things and storing them in his ears. other abilities like cloud surfing, golden invencible body, and mirror image grown from his hair is all shown.
Such a great looking game, and the gameplay seems very smooth, the monster design is otherworldly, oh and the end score is just pure childhood memory.

Don’t believe that Wukong is killed by six ear macaque! It’s a notorious conspiracy theory!
To really understand the plot of this game, you need to know the plot of Journey to the West. Monkey King was born from one rock which was made to fill the broken sky but was not used. Two lights came out from his eyes which shocked the Jade Emperor (the Supreme God of Chinese folk legend). He then became the king of the monkeys in Flower Fruit Mountain where he was born. To get immortality, he left his home and found Grand Master of Bodhi, who taught him 72 methods of transformation, ways to drive clouds, and many other magics. Monkey King also got the religious name of Wu kong from Grand Master of Bodhi. After twenty years of apprenticeship, he came back to the Flower Fruit Mountain. To find a suitable weapon for himself, Monkey King made a havoc in the place of the Dragon King of the East Sea, and robbed Ruyi Jingu Bang, which was left by Dayu to control the flood (China also has a legend about an overwhelming flood, but it was stopped by a legendary emperor Dayu). Ruyi Jingu Bang is so large and heavy that no one can control, but Wu kong can use it and shrink down to the size of a needle and keep in his ear. When he was 342 years old, he was taken to the nether world, for the book of death stipulated that he can only live for 342 years. He was irritated and erased himself and all monkeys from the book of death. Then he and all monkeys became immortal. The Dragon King from of East Sea and the King of the nether world reported Wu kong’s misdeed to the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor gave him a minor position in heaven as the Keeper of Horses, so he can control him. When Wu kong realized that, he became angry, granted him as Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and rebelled. The Jade Emperor dispatched a general to suppress him, but the general was defeated. The Jade Emperor had no choice but to accept his title and let him to be the guardian of the heavenly peach garden. The peach tastes good and can bring people immortality, so Wu kong ate all the peaches. The Jade Emperor was irritated and dispatched an army of 100,000 celestial troops, led by the four Heaven Kings, Erlang Shen, and Nezha. Wu kong defeated all of them by himself using the magic of bilocation, transforming his feather to monkeys. However, eventually, tathagata caught him and suppressed him under a mountain made by his hand. After 500 years, he was saved by Tang Sanzang who was going to the west to obtain the Buddhist scriptures. He then took Tang Sanzang as his master and went to the west with his master.
After you understand that, you will know my feeling when I see the golden inscription on the golden stick held by the Monkey who stopped the protagonist which says Ruyi Jingu Bang, and the golden armor which was always wore by Wukong when he is Great Sage Equal to Heaven. They indicate that the monkey is Wu kong. Wu kong is a symbol of rebellious spirit. For us Chinese who do not have Marvel of other cartoons, he is like the Captain America for the Americans. So my tears even flow down when I see the story of fight between Wu kong and 100,000 celestial troops is presented in a visible way and understand that I can experience the life of my hero in childhood.

There's a lot more to tell about this game. The studio making this game has tried to make something like this before but their work was hijacked by big Chinese gaming corporate Tencent and was totally ruined. So this game, like the 8 characters at the end that states "After the white bones, embark the journey again", is their attempt to realize their, and also millions of Chinese people's dream: to create an authentic yet new take on the beloved Chinese hero.
For the story itself, the studio was determined to take a darker, unorthodoxy perspective rather than the original version (thus the name Black Myth). For years Chinese people have been trying to dig up the true meanings behind the mysteries of the journey to the west, and a popular theory argued that Wukong was the representation of Chinese people's rebellious spirit against the feudalism/religious establishment in ancient China, but in the end he still didn't escape the fate of being assimilated (by being granted the title of a Buddha), so in contrary to the traditional view of his story being a glorious adventure, it was actually a tragedy. And there was a famous "conspiracy" stated that the real monkey king was replaced with the Six Eared Macaque who can imitate every living creature in the world, because the former was more rebellious and tended to go rogue and the latter was more "obedient". Judging that there were two monkeys appearing in the game, I assume it's likely that the studio was inspired by this.
Thanks for all the likes! For people who want to know more about the original Journey to the West story, here's a link to a tv adaptation classic in the 80s that is widely considered to be the best:
    czcams.com/video/K3KNpyKILHM/video.html
Also I made a podcast about the origin story of journey to the west as requested, the monkey king, game science and the game itself, if you are interested in getting to know more about the game and the legend of Wukong, you are welcome to drop by :): @RB20

There are so many details in this game that are easily spotted by any Chinese but not so if you are not familiar with the Journey to the West(Buy the book, it is a classic, a combination of Don Quixote, Lord of the Rings, and it was 500 years old and still read by almost everyone in China.)
    1. The main story line seems to draw inspiration from the so-called "conspiracy theory" in the book, that is the real Sun Wukong, the monkey king, was killed by the six-eared macaque. In the original novel, the macaque only appeared in one chapter, but the text was so full of ambiguity and subtext that there is still a genuine academic debate about what he represents and what is his relationship with Sun Wukong and did he really managed to have Sun killed and took his place.
Interestingly, if you understand Chinese, you will find the dialogue very intriguing:
    1) The first boss first asks who disturbed his meditation, realizing it was the player, he said:" It is you....again." And before battle begins, he was actually trying to persuade the monkey to "follow my path to study some Buddhism" , implying that he might not be a villain we tend to take for granted simply because he is an adversary.
    2) The short old man with a cane and pipe is "Lord of earth", a typical household god in Chinese mythology representing earth, although not a very powerful one(that is why he always runs away), When he first see the player, he mutters:"The resemblance is uncanny", possibly means that the monkey is not Sun Wukong.
    3) The Lord of Earth speaks of a great fire which destroyed the temple many years ago, probably referring to a chapter in the novel in which the monk Tripiṭaka and Monkey King almost get killed when they were staying in a temple on the way to the West. The fire was set by the abbot who coveted Tripiṭaka 's precious robe.
    2. The metamorphosis refers to Sun Wukong's ability to have 72 transformation which allow him to transform into various animals and objects.
    3. When the first boss died, the monkey shrinks his weapon and put (not in his brains) but in his ear. It is a typical Monkey king thing, he puts his weapon in his ear.
    4. The final boss is called "Lin Xuzi", a demon which appears in the same chapter as the temple on fire referred above(That is why I believe the lord of earth was talking about that incident).
    5. That monkey in the end who is none other than the "Monkey King" himself! the shinning characters on his weapon is its name (for lack of better translation, "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel")
    6. The montage of different levels at the end seems to be(I took my best shots) :
    1) Temple of Sound of Thunder, in which Tripiṭaka and his four disciples were captured by demons in the shape of Buddhas,
    2) Deer- Demon, who, with his two other brothers, are high priests of a certain kingdom, their contest with Monkey king was one of the most hilarious chapters of the whole novel,
    3) the monkey in agony seems to be inspired from the chapter of "bone lady" , a skeleton-demon transformed as normal human being and got Tripiṭaka's trust, but monkey king sees through her and killed her (three times), Tripiṭaka was furious and start incantation which cause the circlet on the monkey's head to shrink, causing tremendous agony for him. As you can see from the scene, there was a Buddha statue in the background
4)The crane thing may be Jia Lou Luo, from one of the darkest and goriest chapter (Diablo 1 butcher kind of dark and gory) in the book
    5) The golden giant maybe refers to a god from heaven, from this scene on, all enemy seems from heaven which is definitely a reference to first chapters of the book, in which the monkey king wreck havoc in the heaven.
    6) the four giant, may be Chaturmaharaja in Indian mythology (yep, there are so many gods from so many religions in the book)
    7) monkey king on the cloud, his best buddy (you know it if you ever read Dragon balls). The white dragon is also one of his comrade, most of time he transforms into a white horse for Tripiṭaka to ride on.
    8) The last one, is, the most exciiiiiiiiiiiiiting chapters in the book, the havoc in heaven, in which the monkey king starts a rebellion in heaven, defeating millions of heaven soldiers and gods. This was literally the best part of the book by many readers (even though he failed in the end).
7.The music piece in the end is adopted from main theme from the classic 1980s TV adaptation of the book, itself a classic, and has been never been off the air even now!
Again, if you havent read the book, buy and read !

As a Chinese, I have to say I've been waiting for this game my entire life. and I feel obligated to explain the gist of the story for people to get a better understanding of the game and enjoy the details and game as a Chinese person would.
First a bit of a background context for those who are not familiar with the story, the game is based on one of the four greatest Chinese literature "Journey to the West", the book has been turned into TV series, movies, mobile games and has a monumental influence to the eastern culture. The TV series has been played on Chinese TV for over 3000 times, yes THREE THOUSAND times, making it one of the if not the most repeated series in history. Dragon Ball's Goku is inspired by the book, the main character in the game is Monkey King "Sun WuKong" who in the book wanted to overthrow the Emperor of the Heavens and become the ruler of the world. he eventually failed and was banished and imprisoned by Buddha under the "five finger mountain" for 500 years.
To redeem himself, the Buddha ordered him to protect a Monk to the west for the holy scrolls. they would eventually succeed and Monkey king will become the "Buddha warrior" = "Kratos"
Now in the book and in the game, his main weapon is a staff that can change sizes at his will, when he is not using it he turns it into a needle which he then puts into his ear. the game demonstrates that really well.
his abilities also consist of 72 forms of shape-shifting, shadow clones, fly on a nimbus, and loads more.
In Chinese mythology, there are literally thousands of Gods, the old short guy we see in the demo is one of them called the "god of land"-- one of the lowest ranking Gods. he was warning Wukong not to go into the temple as there is a monster guarding it.
In the final montage. we see a number of monsters. the stand out for me would be the 4 titans we see, in the book, they are the "Four Greatest heavenly kings" sort of like the guardians of heaven. each has one unique weapon "Pipa(Chinese instrument )", "Sword", "A Python" and "Umbrella". that is the boss fight I am most excited about.
I can't wait for this game to be released.
Hope this helps. enjoy the trailer.

Since, you look surprised every time wukong pulls of a trick. Some of the abilities of wukong you 'must' know about:
    1. Boundless strike, his staff can expand.
    2. Shape shifting. He can turn into stuff that helps him blend with the surroundings and plan his next attack.
    3. He can forge monkey soldiers from his hair.
    4. He can transform weapons into small needles that he can hide behind his ear. / He can transform each piece of his hair into a weapon.
There are lots of others abilities. But these are the popular ones which i thought the game got it spot on.

For people who don't read Chinese dialogues, I explain the plot in this demo video (as I know so far):
    1. The tiny little old guy in purple is the Lord of the Soil, a god of a small region. All he can do is to observe around and offering information when needed, despite he is a guardian spirit, he's powerless.
    2. During the first met, the Lord of Soil was surprised "you look exactly like him".
    3. In the game, we can see the Temple (where monkey fought the giant wolf ) has been abandoned for years (rebuilt after a fire -- said the Lord of Soil), according to the original storyline of Journey To The West, it happened when Wukong and his master Sanzang visited the temple, that means the monkey is not Wukong himself, or at least not the Wukong who followed Sanzang.
    4. When encountered the Wolf Chief (fire weapon-wielding guy), he called player "another monkey", soon after defeating him, he mentioned that monkey was probably the Chosen One. This also indicates the monkey is not Wukong, he might be someone to finish the mission that Wukong failed.
    5. The giant wolf boss named Ling Xu Zi was the leader of those monsters and the best friend of the Black Bear Spirit. The latter failed to put out the fire in the Temple when the owner of Temple tried to steal Sanzang's treasure clothes by setting the temple on fire. After the incident, Bodhisattva Guanyin subdued the Black Bear Spirit and left Ling Xu Zi alone in the mountain.
    6. The staff that Monkey King wielded is Ruyi Jingu Bang, a legendary magical pillar that has its name in Chinese written on the side as shown in 11:54. While the one the monkey used is merely a common iron club (that's still powerful tho).
    7. The 13:04 scene is the most well-known battle "Havoc in Heaven" in the Journey to the West franchise. I can't tell if it's just memory of Wukong or a new adventure.
    8. In 12:20 is the scene Wukong suffering the pain caused by golden fillet on his head, it was bounded with him since he fought the White Bone Spirit (aka Lady Skeleton) and couldn't be taken off until he finished the journey. But at 12:04 we see there's nothing worn on the "real" Monkey King's forehead, either he's already become a buddha or he couldn't successfully protect Sanzang from monsters after all.

If the cutscene of the monkey being stopped when trying to kill the wolf is real
Whoever we are playing arent Wukong himself
Because the person who stopped his attack, is holding the real Golden Staff (Pin of the ocean) with full armor set of "Heavens Equals"
There maybe alot of plot twist based on the cutscene plus the initial narration of unknown stories
The final army scene may be Wukong when he first challenge the Heavens and fight solo against the Army of Heaven. Essentially beating all of them until Buddha stepped in.
This was pre-Journey to the West before him being trapped 500 yrs under the mountain and meeting his Sensei Sanzang (Not the 1 that teach him the skills) .
I am actually looking forward to how they going to present the story.
I also saw pigsy in the cutscenes.

    • @MilA-eh3gf
      @MilA-eh3gf Před 3 lety +1

Yes I'm excited about the twists! However I am also immensely nervous about them cos I don't want my childhood dream getting squashed (Wukong died or something)... If for some reason they decide to go with the conspiracy theory of 6-ear replacing wukong I'm just gonna have to leave the game unfinished ;(
Wukong's character arc in Journey to the West from being a reckless monkey to being a responsible person with a strong moral compass who used his capability to rescue others in distress, was quite a nice one. It meant a lot to me to see him with a good ending so gosh, I'm scared to see that ending potentially being altered.
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A bit of what I think regarding the "personality change" (became more accepting of Buddhism) Wukong exhibited that prompted the conspiracy theory that the real Wukong died: when I re-watched the shows and cartoons as an adult I realised how marginalised he was when starting out -- he was born without parents; was seen as a monster by the humans, and ridiculed by his Taoist "classmates" at the training temple; his training was cut short by his first mentor without notice; he was looked down upon and disrespected by the other Immortals partly due to their fear towards him and partly due to him being a loner with no support network. While being a horse-carer for the sky palace, he had a moment of epiphany, realising that none of these Immortals respected or cared about him. This is when he wrecked havoc and ended up being personally restrained by the Buddha under the Five-Finger mountain.
So for him to be eventually accepted by a group (the "fellowship of the scripture" haha) was a big deal for him. Yes at the beginning of the journey, he was still salty and rebellious (he was physically restrained for 500 years so give this dude a break) and had to have a "patrol officer" in the form of a tightening-crown, but he did eventually mature and became more responsible in how he carried out his actions/acts of justice. He also started to care for the others in his journey (albeit with a splash of Stockholm syndrome since he's wearing that magical crown that means he HAD to stay with the mentor Sanzang). The formation of these strong human attachment actually aligns well with his lonely start -- now he cherished that he finally had a family. Consequently he seemed more grounded and receptive of others by the end -- people grow, after all. For someone who had been as lonely as Wukong had, it only made more sense.
Wukong's arc is about changes in life goals: as a young orphan monkey he wanted to achieve immortality for immortality's sake; it just sounded a cool thing to do. Later he wasn't focused on immortality anymore, but instead wanted to help people -- through this, he was granted immortality as a buddha. He was not respected by the Taoist heavenly Immortals by displaying manic strength and power, but he was respected as a buddha once he accomplished what he set out to do -- protecting people.
What does Wukong's arc reflect in our real world other than a moral lesson on meaningful life goals? If anything, it's probably that Wu Chengen, the author of the novel, saw Buddhist values (people become immortal through their acts of kindness to others) as superior to Taoist values (people become immortal by working on themselves) as he understood it 😂. Digging too much is probably going beyond what the author even intended.

The boss fight is in 黑风山 Black Wind Mountain, Guanyin temple originally in the novel chapter 16. Where the Wolf 灵虚子 is a friend of the "Head" of Black Wind Mountain, which the Head boss of black wind mount is a black grizzly 黑熊怪. The boss in the video, the wolf went there to celebrate Black Grizzly‘s birthday. 灵虚子 also brought 2 "Golden Revitalizers" as a gift, but he got killed by Wukong - the monkey king midway.
Wukong- the monkey king can shape-shift into 72 different creatures, that's why you see him throughout the video as a golden cicada. He was born from a rock, a rock has been getting all the earthen sun and moon essence, that is why he could change to a larger monkey and smash the ground. And also the way he "parrys" the attacks is one of his other abilities, called 铜头铁臂 direct translation is the Copper head and iron arm which makes him durable to physical attacks. The move he freezes others is called 定身术 - Immobilization or paralyzation.
His fur(S)/hair can make clones of himself and other things.
I guess one of this game's system is to be able to get the defeated mini-bosses' weapon as artifacts and use them against the bosses, that is why he transforms into the wolf using the flame spear.
When he was trying to finish off 灵虚子, he got blocked by another version of himself? I assume the play through character represents the dark side of the monkey king? These are just my guesses.
His Weapon is a stick/staff called 如意金箍棒 - the Monkey King Bar. Which and elongation, shorten, largen, and shrink. That's why you see him puts/pull it to/from his ear. In the end, the cloud he was riding is called 筋斗云. He can also travel 180K kilometers with one single somersault. Also at the very end, that is him 大闹天宫 - battles in heaven. Chapter 4-6 in the novel.
All the bosses in the ending quick flash are all present some gods or demons.

A slightly more detailed version of this comment was posted on Reddit r/BlackMythWukong.
For people who are not familiar with the story. Here are some key points.
The story was based on the famous novel Journey to the West. Wukong, or Monkey King, is the protagonist of the story. He is basically the Superman, Batman or Spider-man in most Chinese kids’ mind.
However, what makes me love the book so much is that there are so many theories, or perspectives to interpret the story. In fact, many believe that the whole book is actually a conspiracy, a tragedy of the King. The game obviously takes this route by naming it “Black Myth.”
The old man in the beginning (he looks like an old monkey doesn’t he…I digressed) mentioned that some believe the King is long dead. Now, this is the biggest theory of the book. In the book, there is a chapter where a monkey impersonates the king. He is so good that no one can see the difference. Then everyone asks the Buddha (he kinda like the Living tribunal from Marvel and the most powerful being in the world) for help. The Buddha asked the “god of seeing” who can see all truth to look at the two monkeys, he answered: ”I see the truth, but I dare not to say.” The Buddha then asked the “god of hearing” who can hear all truth, he answered: “I hear the truth, but I dare not to say.”
People think that the fact that those gods dare not to say, is because the truth is: the fake King was actually sent by the Buddha himself, to kill the real King. Because of heaven, the King has been such a pain in the A.
The gameplay showed the king fighting countless soldiers on the cloud. That is one famous chapter in the book where the king almost destroyed heaven because heaven treated him like garbage because he is a demon. Buddha cannot tolerate the fact that “merely” a demon can challenge him.
In the end, one monkey died and the other resumed the journey. But the “black myth” says that the dead one is actually the King. The fake monkey completely replaced him and got all the glory and achieved godhood. And no one knows the truth.
I still get chills when I think about this.
At the end of the Boss fight, the monkey that stopped the “player” appears to be the real King. Because his staff has the name “如意金箍棒” on it. This is the only weapon the king uses and people believe only the king can wield it. So we may have been controlling the fake king.
Another theory of the game plot is also from the old man, he said “it all starts from a “golden cicada””. The king’s master, in the book, is the reincarnation of “Golden Cicada”. So maybe the protagonist is the reincarnation of the King’s master? It’s a stretched theory though.
Fun fact: In the book, the golden cicada will reincarnate over and over again to, get this, give people chances to capture him and EAT him. His flesh can give people long life and chances to achieve godhood. This is not a theory though. This is actually one of the handful of ways for mortals to live long and become gods.
To be clear, the word “god” I used here is not very accurate. In the book, these god is more powerful than demi-gods and less powerful than actual gods, like the Buddha.
I think the old man telling the story is the king. Because he looks like a monkey and in the last scene, you can see a piece of cloth is floating around him. This is a sign that he has godhood, and the king is the only “monkey god”. He looks sad. Everyone who read the book would know that the king would not be happy when he became god, because he is such a free spirit, being god means being controlled to him.
The most liked comment has another theory. Go check it out.
    Other details from the gameplay:
All the enemies have animal heads, that is because they are demons just like the king. The short old man who has been guiding the player is one of the “earth god (sorry, this translation is so bad)”. In the book, every major turf has one of them, and they all like little old men and all quite friendly.
“Demon” is not accurate as well. They are basically animals, plants, even objects that somehow gain consciousness (there are so many ways to achieve that in Chinese mythology). Many of them has powerful abilities and will try to work their way to godhood.
The king has the ability to transform into anything (“72 forms”, called in the book). So he can have many forms in the game.
Another famous ability is to blow his hair into foot soldiers, also made it into the game.
In the gameplay you can see the king puts away and draws weapon from his ear. This is accurate from the book. In the book, the king only uses the staff “如意金箍棒”. It can turn infinite large or infinite small on his command. So when he doesn’t need to use it, he puts it in his year.
In Chinese Buddhism, one cannot kill. Even accidental kills such as stamp on insects or drink water with microorganisms, need to have rituals to “pass them into next life”. But the king kills all the time because he is a demon and a vigilante. As a result, it is kinda confusing to tell which one is the real king at the end of the gameplay. The king who achieved godhood won’t kill, but the original king kills.
In the gameplay, you can see him riding a piece of cloud. This is adapted from the anime GOKU. In the anime, the cloud is named 筋斗云 “flip cloud”, because in the book the king can travel the world with one flip.
The “earth god” mentioned that the temple was burnt. I am not sure which temple this is, but in the book, there was a famous temple with many believers’ donations. However, the abbot (chief monk of the temple) was a greedy bastard. One day, the protagonists visited the temple overnight. The abbot wants the cloak of the King’s master, so he wanted to set fire on the temple to kill the master (yeah the cloak is that valuable). The king overheard and went to heaven for help (one freaking flip). He asked one of the gods for a shield against fire. The god laughed: “they set fire, why don’t you ask for water”. The king replied: “water will stop the fire. I want the temple to burn because those monks are bad, but I don’t want my master to get hurt.” Eventually, the temple was burnt. This story shows how much he respects and loves his master and how anti-hero he actually is.
The book is called “Journey to the west”. It means the kings master’s journey to heaven to get the books of Buddhism. This actually happened (sort of). The King’s master, 唐三藏, is a real monk living in China’s Tang dynasty that went from China to India (the west) to get the original books of Buddhism because he thinks the current translation of those books are not accurate.
In the book, there are two forces in heaven, Buddhism and the Taoism. As you know Taoism is a Chinese native idea-turned religion, and Buddhism is foreign. What is interesting is that in the novel Buddhism is much powerful. So as a result, Taoism always seeks Buddhism for help but there are tensions and subtle conflicts littered in the book.
That is everything I can share so far. They are all based on my memory so might not be too accurate. I doubt that there is anyone who read it whole, but thank you for your time. I had fun writing this.
Journey to the west is such a good book. I really hope this game can succeed.
    No pressure.

Or.. the imposter replaces wukong at some point in the story and gains buddahood (becomes the wukong with the gold armor) and we play as the original getting revenge

Actually, transformation is just one of the 72 abilities 七十二变 that Wukong presses. It might translate into “72 transformations” based on the name, but the character“变”(change)here actually means abilities, indicate that the practitioners of 72 transformations have so many different abilities that they can freely change from one to another. The abilities includes transformation, inhumanly strength, the ability to communicate with the deaths and minor gods, cloud riding, etc, and only those who has completed the training and mastered all 72 different abilities can called themselves practitioner of 七十二变. That’s why Wukong is so powerful, because there are only few who can both complet the training and mastered all 72 abilities, and he is the first(or maybe the second) one to accomplish that.

Some guesses of the "Black Myth":
The monkey king showed up at the end of the demo is either true Wu Kong or Six Eared Macaque (fake Wu Kong), depending on whether the true Wu Kong died and got replaced during the journey to the west (this is called black myth or conspiracy because the original novel never talked about this). I believe the story of this game happened way after the Journey to the West: Wu Kong finished the journey and became the Victorious Fighting Buddha, a de-facto running dog of Buddha forces (simply put, a servile follower of the ruling class), the one he used to hate the most. This Wu Kong either betrayed his rebellious soul or was replaced by Six Eared Macaque.
The main character controlled by the player, however, probably is a brand new character. A new stone-born monkey, a new Wu Kong full of energy, sense of justice, and a rebellious spirit. He may use to be a young follower of Wu Kong, but are depressed to see that Wu Kong betrayed his original ideal and joined the ruling class, even though the world is still suffering. Or, he may know the hidden truth that the true Wu Kong, his King, died during the journey to the west, and he is gonna step on his road of revenge to slain the fake Wu Kong (Six Eared Macaque), and continue the true Wu Kong's unfinished business - fxxk up the ruling class (in this world they are the buddha forces and Jade emperor heaven forces).
I may have gone too far, but anyway, there are too many possibilities, and the story as well as the game itself must be AWESOME. This game is a must-buy to me.

Interesting theory. I took it upon the fact that wukong can clone himself and distribute his energy/power/memories accordingly. My guess is the real one got imprisoned after the heavenly battle, robbed off his pole and abilities, and left to die. The cloned one went to the Journey to the west, and attained godhood. This awakened the dying wukong and he escaped, but no memory of his own. You control the real wukong with no memories. The cloned wukong which attained godhood is the one with the real pole.

The staff the armored monkey possessed is either a replica or it was stolen from Wukong, but my guess is it's probably replica as of from 1986 TV series, both Wukong and Macaque possessed same identity, powers, and staff. My other guess is Macaque would probably ruin the Heaven and the Jade Emperor believe it was Wukong who did it and banished him. So Wukong's goal is to fight Macaque and bring himself back to Heaven.
