- In this interview in 1980, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford talk about The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars V The Empire Strikes Back). They discuss creating the characters of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, working on films between the two Star Wars movies, what little they know about Star Wars VI Return of the Jedi which they refer to as Revenge of the Jedi and the symbolism of characters in Star Wars.

this guy asks questions like a therapist i was scared for both mark and harrison during this thing
uglyclexastan I think Harrison was confused the whole time! Lol.
Nah that's how alot of interviewer's were like back in the day.

Hamill is twirling his hair. So cute.
PG He’s cute in all his interviews “letters to his Mum, god love him”!

Mark seems like a different person
he seems so young
and Harrison seems like the same person
It's true.
Everybody ages dude.
I can't believe he was 29 during this interview, it's not old but he looks much younger than that I feel
mike evans i
Probably because he played the Joker, he got darker haha
Mark Hamill is such a captivating speaker, if he were my grandpa I would go over to his house to hear him talk all the time. I guess that's why he's such a good voice actor
Yeah he has an incredibly unique voice pattern and way about him
These interviewers and actors from this time period were so much more genuine and intelligible than today.
people were
Seanio true their friend.
The interviewers had patience and time. Everything has to be quick and simple now it seems.
The quicker information has become the more people are trying to keep up
And now everything's about "marketing." There's no honesty or authenticity in that.
damn this guy could make a dog sweat with these questions.
Third degree in there...what's up with that?!
What do you want?!? sheesh...
*what do you remember, HARRISON*
The tight close-ups with the camera really dramatize the interrogation.
Yeah it's almost as if he actually challenged them rather than lobbing softballs and fluff the whole time. Made for a great interview that was far more interesting than average.
lol at Mark playing with his hair
He does that in almost every interview 😂
MsLm97 lol he's so adorable
It's so cute!
Harrison Ford: "Dude. I"m not Han Solo. I just needed a job."
Thats what han solo would say
then i am han solo! im han solo. im han solo.
Translation: it’s not rocket science to play Hans Solo
You could tell Harrison couldn't wait for the interview to end.
Mark Hamill doing that nurse impression is all I need in life😂
There’s always one of those in the maternity unit, sadly. Bless him XD
Wow mark hamill was a beauty. And he is now still
The actors in the 3 original Star Wars films had such charisma and personality that is lacking in the other actors in the other prequels / sequels. A golden time in Hollywood.
Damn! This interviewer opened up with some seriously dark and heavy questions. Dude needs to lighten up.
Dark is good, as is light.
Harrison Ford is the kind who plays iconic characters perfectly, yet doesn't want to be recognised or treated as an icon
@@VrilWaffenYou can see that's lost on the interviewer when you asks "what does it mean to wake up in another hotel room, in another City, prepared to discuss the inner meaning of Hans Solo, what has it given you as a man and an artist?"😆😆
That sums his attitude to all his blockbuster movies, probably more than any other actor.
Mark stretching and waving at the end. So cute. 😍
"So, did you do these sucky movies just for the money or what?"
The dude's really hardballing them there. Interesting but tense interview.
when did the interviewer say that?
Early on he confronts Harrison about one of his movies that got "vitriolic" reviews. Harrison seems annoyed and sets him straight.
These were standard journalist questions for major new movie stars -- especially ones who exploded (like the Death Star, sorry) on the scene like Hamill, Ford and Carrie Fisher. Though there definitely is a third-degree questioning style this guy has...not a fan of it either.
I love how Mark Hamil plays with his hair. 😍
It's so interesting. You look at an actor like Harrison Ford and you think he doesn't get along with a lot of people or let people in his circle. But seeing how comfortable he is sitting next to Mark, silly man child looking guy, and they look like close friends.
Mark did seem to have a calming influence on him. Harrison seems so uptight in other interviews I've seen that it's almost annoying.
..No he doesn't. They seem friendly, but not friends.
Lol Harrison does not give off a friend vibe. It doesn't seem like Ford has much going on in his head.
"A silly man child looking guy" is what i aspire to be when i grow up

Mark Hamill - just when I thought perfection doesn't exist..how can this man be so nice and sweet and all?! ♥♥ haha...I love him ♥♥
Now I am disappointed we never got that Peter Pan live action adaptation with mark.
@Schnake Eyes But we don't have Mark in it :'(
His career after Star Wars went pretty much downhill.
@@DavidGonzalez-ff6yk Yeah...no. His Joker is just as iconic as Luke, and not to mention all his other amazing voice roles he has done over the years. He may not be as famous as Harrison Ford, but he is still an amazing voice actor with several awards under his belt.
He would have been perfect in the role right around Star Wars when he was still so young looking
@@lordquaz7154 he had a major career lull until the early 90s, and never did become a big star in front of the camera, let's just be honest
Mark was such a sweet kid haha
Harrison was hot. Mark was adorbs.
Yes in both... good adjectives.... hot and adorable !! Harrison ford was smokin hot for sure..... I can see why Carrie had sex with him!

This interview is 40 years old now...
I love the way Mark waves at the end 😘😘😘😍😘😍😍😍😍😍😍 he is so sweet and cute I'm dying 😍😍😍
yeah ! haha! glad his charisma and humor remains the same today
Same! 🥰😍
IT was sad to hear about Mark's broken nose -- and allegedly near fatal crash -- but his "new" face for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, in my opinion, added to his character's growth as a Jedi Knight and really as a grown man. By Return of the Jedi, Luke was no longer a farm boy.
Yeah but thats especially because of Hamils acting. His stand and the way he speaks completely changed and he has this noble and wise aura surrounding him.
It wouldn't make any difference how his Face looked, its all in the acting
@@ahabduennschitz7670
Can't it be both?
I agree with both of you.
The injury lent itself perfectly to the adventures of Luke Skywalker,
and
Mark Hamill did play the Hell outta Luke Skywalker.
Side note: I love how Luke calmy chokes out those pig guards.
He's like, "Fellas?"
The shot of Luke putting on that glove in his cockpit was a reminder to himself not to utilize his father's persona any further.
He sheds the mask as he leaves Tatooine and humbles himself before he returns to Yoda
@@tperson8347 Well, he already had the Face injurys in Empire strikes back and there he still had the over confident, kinda cocky attitude.
It completely changed with Return of Jedi because this was the Point where Luke reached real Wisdom and became one of the most powerful Jedis who ever existed
I'd heard, back in the 80s, it had been a very serious accident and required facial reconstruction, and didn't know it occurred prior to Empire. Just goes to show how misinformation could spread back in the 70's and 80's and there was no way to find out the truth, unless you happened to catch him on a late night talk show
how come Mark didnt look different in "Corvette Summer" filmed before empire, or literally ANY of the interviews he did in 1977? the car crash barely changed his face at all. he just looked different in empire because of aging and because he pretty much had ZERO body fat during that time.
9:10 - 9:19
THAT WAS SO INCREDIBLY ADORABLE. 😍😍😍
"I wanna work though.." HaHa Mark is great man
Mark is so soft spoken 🥺
Hamill really does seem like the same person he is today, except by only gaining some life experience, he has accrued a lifetime of stories to tell and the great oration skills to match it.
He was definitely an old soul
I LOVE Mark's laugh! 😍
12:30 Luke turns to the dark side.
Hahaha good catch. That's where that crappy Anakin actor got his cue from.
This Sucks oh shut up lmao
This Sucks nah hayden was alright
@@---re9dy: Yeah. So what's he done outside of Star Wars?
This Sucks he said after Star Wars he didn’t really have the motivation to work his portrayal of anakin was perfect (an arrogant whiny teenager who was hailed as the chosen one since he was a kid that was destined to turn to the dark side) the prequels were cringe but Hayden’s acting shined through that cringe for example his acting in the final scene the “I hate you” all of it was anakin he is and forever will be anakin skywalker
Wow, actors who are actually invested in their character's journey and development...Imagine the wonder of it all
it's a crime to obscure such handsome faces with the URL
Mark and his hair😍😍
Emma Rives I wanna travel back in time to 1978 and smoke a joint with Mark Hamill in his trailer and fuck his brains out
ElementOfLoyalty What do you mean?
To me these are the 2 best looking and endearing male actors from the US, I've always thought so even as new actors kept appearing on the scene ...
Why is it, that whenever Harrison talks I almost fall asleep. I think it's his monotone voice. And whenever Mark speaks I'm suddenly interested and caught up in what he says.
Abigail Lane i know what you mean
Harrison is one of the most boring talkers lol
Mark Hamil was so mature at a young age.. Nice to see that...
I love Mark Hamil and Harrison Ford. They're both lovely people.
I wished Mark Hamill had make more movies during this time of his life
it was really hard to separate himself from the whole "Luke Skywalker" persona, and a lot of projects either wouldn't cast him or would cast him specifically because of that
Did you play Wing commander III and IV? And Starsiege? Hamill was there.
"Sometimes the line between analyst and interviewer becomes a little muddled and I talk too much" Mark Hamill predicting the future lol

I love interviews from the 80s. Night and day difference from modern "interview" style, which is completely scripted and inauthentic. This is very honest (maybe not even what they say, but watching the body language and non verbals is fascinating) and feels completely off the cuff. The interviewer asks terrific questions (unfortunately for Ford). So grateful for the channel for posting these.
Interviews serve two purposes: to entertain and to get to know about the celebrities. This interview wasn't too entertaining nor too informative (especially from Harrison, who avoids/dodges questions constantly and is completey deadpan), in my opinion. So I have to disagree, I think most interviews nowadays are better.
I assure you that interviews from the 80s were not all like this. Brian Linehan, a Canadian, was the interviewer here and if you watch his interviews you’ll find they are all of a very high quality. Well-researched, candid and at times challenging questions.
@@nachoalfonso2614That’s simply not true. Interviews today, for the most part, are absolutely vapid.
Oh. My. God Harrison is so hottttt and Mark playing with his hair is so cuteeee😍😍😍😂
Neat. The only part of the interview I thought was in bad taste was when he asked about percentages. No mater who or what you do for a living it's just rude to ask how much money someone makes.
I like that Lineham isn't asking fluff movie promotional tour questions, he's genuinely catching them off guard at times. Hamill and Ford are acting almost caricature early 80s Hollywood here. Older interviews with them are so much more genuine sounding. They had been around the block by this time.
crazy how actual interviews like back then were also ball busters and it did not matter about feelings lol
That has to be one of the most candid interviews I have ever seen with Hamill and Ford! It was almost as if you were in one of their homes and you were just hanging out with them kind of vibe! And they were also very frigidity, playing with their hair and faces, truly a very unusual interview, but very insightful, because it showed Hamill and Ford in a very relaxed way that only someone very close to them would ever see! Great and interesting video!
It is so weird hearing them say “Revenge of the Jedi” before they changed it to “Return of the Jedi”
Harrison is really bad at this (or totally indifferent), lol. Hamill was on it! Funny how both their answers and attitudes really reflect how they view their roles in these movies in hindsight today. Mark understood the importance of his role as Luke, and Harrison wanted Han to die (and he got his wish.)
Just because he talks a little slower than Mark? Actually this is one of the better Harrison interviews I've seen. Usually he talks excrutiatingly slow, seems distracted and generally miserable. In this one he was even eloquent. And he smiled. At first at least... The interviewer was kind of rude to him, though.
Well they both seem really exhausted too, and understandable. I understand Fords cadence is naturally slower, but he does seem miserable. Or burnt out from 8-balls.
he did't REALLY got his wish tho. He didn't die in TESB. And he only joined the force awakened because he got like 2 or 3 times more pay than the other actors.
Fossegrim
I remember reading an interview with the director on Return of the Jedi, and he said Harrison was trying hard to convince him to kill Han off because he didn't want to do Star Wars anymore. The fact that he refused until a certain sum of money was involved further proves his reluctance or approval of his involvement with the series.
@113686381983900865765 That's his right, I guess, but I find it ironic, because he's so good as Han Solo... Ford's a pretty limited actor, but as Han Solo I always get impressed, including in the new one. I understand he doesn't want the attention of being in a huge franchise, but if so why does he keep playing Indiana Jones?? I feel insulted on behalf of Han, lol..
Harrison was 38 here, he made Raiders of the Lost Ark the same year 1980, filmed in Hawaii, some Western US States, England (most indoor & exterior scenes shot at Elstree Studios Borehamwood), Spain
"pink walls and green carpets"
Funny(to me) how it seems in my experience(late 90s+) that hotels often have pinkish reddish floors and green or tan walls. everything is cyclical
revenge of the jedi. before george lucas changed it to return of the jedi
People who don't remember when The Empire Strikes Back came out and the hype of the next movie, Revenge Of The Jedi, will forever trash on anyone who still calls it that. The title was much hyped common knowledge until they later changed it because they "didn't want to give away the plot".
@@TS-qq7vr Actually, I had read that Lucas didn't like "Revenge" because seeking revenge wasn't very "jedi-like".
@@77dris: The excuse at the time was "not to spoil the plot", but being the final movie it was a no brainer plot development. If they had called it Incest Of The Jedi I could see the point, but...
Which was the right call.
Lucas said the reason Revenger of the Jedi was changed to Return of the jedi, is because ""jedi's don't take revenge.""
Wow Mark only broke his nose. Everyone talked liked he nearly died and needed tons of plastic surgery on his face. I even read that the Snow beast attack on Hoth was put in so his facial scars could be explained.
True. Sincerely, i don't see the "huge" change in his face. I mean, his nose looks kinda out of place but that's basically all 🤷♀️

wow, what great questions!
Highlight of this man's career in Star Wars and this man says he had zero plans for Han Solo, he was just winging it.
"I don't know about the 3rd film, "Revenge of the Jedi..."
I had a Monster magazine circa fall 1980 that had that same title for the coming-soon movie that Mark calls it for the 'Return of the Jedi'.
After the release of RotJ, George Lucas was asked about the title change within the last year, he said that revenge wasn't fitting of a Jedi's way, but more appropriate to the dark side & simply made the change when he realized it.
Harrison Ford has made some characters iconic in his representation on film which I can watch and enjoy over and over. In interviews he is at times, for me, awkward and difficult to watch. A great actor.
Harrison is the king of work/life balance
"I think it's only good to believe in films that are strong in belief."
Young Harrison Ford trying to sound deep. Lol
He's actually almost 40 here
He’s not trying, he smoked and he’s almost 40 here 😂
lol what part was that at
Pretty hilarious with the context given in one of Carrie Fischer’s interviews where she talks about how she was so taken by Harrison because he’d taken philosophy classes and would quote philosophers in interviews, so she studied it too to be able to do the same thing
Mark called it "Revenge of the Jedi" That's cool!!
Yeah, it sounds pretty chilling! Actually, the original title for 'Return of the Jedi' was supposed to be 'Revenge of the Jedi.' During the time of this interview it was still 'Revenge of the Jedi.' It wasn't until later, shortly before the film was released, that it was changed to 'Return of the Jedi.' The cast and crew decided that 'Revenge of the Jedi' did not make sense and ruined the image of the Jedi because Jedi do not seek revenge. They seek protection and peace. The title 'Return of the Jedi' also ties into the fact that after Luke becomes a full Jedi and he and his friends save the galaxy, all of the deceased Jedi "return" through their Force spirits at the end of the movie.
We know the picture behind. Everything, including that picture, made Empire Strikes Back awesome.
What a deep interview.
(5:00) Good response Mark, thumbs up.

Harrison Ford was Smart and was careful not to be type casted or stereo typed in just sci fi . He had a Expanded and brilliant career due to his OTHER work
He never really cared for the Han Solo character and wanted to do more dramatic work like Witness, among others.
Amazing how both main characters of the original trilogy are the last surviving members of that trilogy

"Revenge" of the Jedi! Wow.
This guy Linehan is actually pretty good. I got the impression from Martin Short's Brock Linehan routine that he was kind of a joke. Again, he's pretty competent. Brock had a better theme song though.
+assignmentearth Linehan was one of the best interviewers. I'm going through all of these clips!
+assignmentearth . Not sure if your wow was because you think he got it wrong, but Revenge of the Jedi was the original title. They changed it to make it less aggressive in keeping with the idea of the Jedi.
+TheSeannachaidh yes. Yes, aware of that. impressive bit of history there to witness. I have a friend who worked at a movie theater at that time, remembers seeing a poster with that title in the lobby. Wishes he had it now. Worth money now.
You caught that too! I was aware of the Original Title but glad to hear Mark say it back then.
assignmentearth that's the gag; Linehan was known for his amazing research. Martin Short turned that around and made his parody incompetent. Both Short and Linehan were from Hamilton and apparently Linehan liked the parody
