      That's exactly what happened HAHAHA Kishimoto always said in some points of the story that he didn't knew where he wanted to take the history :v He WAS inventing everything along the way. An that in tself is not a proble, cause Naruto is a character driven history, where the wordbuilding is less important than the character journey, BUT, when your worldbuilding doesn't tie correctly, and contradicts even the journey your character needs to go, then it becomes a problem

I'm reading the manga from the begning right now and we have only a moment where Kakashi thinks "Elemental jutsu comes later" and "A genin shouldn't learn how to do Katon". We were only showed that yes, people can use jutsu who have elements but it was much more like "These are techniques any ninja can learn, from any element but come nnja will be better at an element than other", and then, only in shippuden we were thought that people are BORN with an element attached to their chakra

      They didn’t become vastly unimportant as a ninja grows hand signs aren’t needed as much. Think about them as training wheels in order to prep one for jutsu. I wouldn’t say that. Lots of characters still use hand signs. Madara used a decent amount of them and the only way to stop the Reanimation was the learn the hand signs. Naruto and Sasuke also had to use a hand sign to undo the Infinite Tsukiyomi and you have stuff like Obito and Sasuke using other people’s hands to do hand signs. I think it’s less that it became unimportant and more that it became a standard rather than something new. After 100s of chapters, I doubt anyone wants to see characters slowly doing 40+ hand signs while chanting the names of each sign.

In Fairy Tail, for example, you basically never know the rules of magic itself but every magic has some type of flaw: Natsu needs to eat fire to power up, Gray's Ice depends on his imagination, Lucy's ability to summon spirits depends on her stamina, even without a complex explanation, you can figure out things and you know when tey're at their limit. In Naruto it kinda started that way but with a big problem: We had people using elemental jutsu withtout any explanation about Chakra natures. Yes we had an explanation of what chakra is, but we never knew that people were born with certain element in their chakra already, and even when this was a thing, we still had a lot of people with Jutsu that never fit on the 5 categories, people using multipe natures at the sime time, even though this was something to be called rare, we had some interaction between them but never made sense, like Raiton being stronger then Doton, but Lightning is useless agains earth. And yeah, there are some people who was just naturaly gifted and can do shit but Naruto never presented itself as a series like that! Fairy Tail was a series where you could use this argument cause it always presented itself as a soft magic system story, but Naruto always presented itself as a magic system with rules, nuances and complexity so it suddenly trasforming into a soft magic system where everyone can basically do everything is a problem and a very desastrous one

      Yes, that's what basically every writter do, but the best writter's will make those made up thngs seem natural to the story or appear as if they were always there. Like Haki in One PIece or the Fullbring in Bleach, Oda and Kubo didn't had those ideas by the start of the series, but when they finally did, they introduced in a way where you can go back to the start of the series and understand things like Shanks scaring a sea monster with only his presence as King's Haki and Enel predicting your moves as Observation Haki, and in Bleach you have Chad telling to someone that he feels his powers are closer to those of a Hollow, which in the moment seemed like "Oh yea, okay, is not importante" but when you have the Fullbrings, it was trasnformed into a foreshadowing, cause you don't want your audience to know you havent't figured out how's your story's gonna follow, and Kishimoto never did that properly. He introduced us to one explanation, and then tossed it aside, he showed us some power and said it was high level and months later you see a guy invoking a meteor. And yeah, even Oda said that he doesn't know how he's going to defeat Kaido since he built him up as undefeatable, just Like Kishimoto didi with Madara, but Kishimoto simply shoved some new bigger villain which no matter how many times you come back to the manga, seems foreshadowed or plausible to end the story. When you don't make things seem to fit in your own story is where the problem lays

    My big issues with jutsu and chakra: At the start of the series it was pretty emphasized that you can't just expect to keep slinging jutsu's out an entire fight since A: the opponent will be actively trying to stop you so you wont have time to constantly be doing hand signs, and B: you will have a limited amount of chakra. These issues pretty much vanish, any character just stands there throwing out hand signs and every one else just lets them, and the "running out of chakra" bit just feels randomly thrown in to make a situation tense. Like sasuke vs deidara, sasuke has little to no chakra, but manages to dig up enough to summon manda, use genjutsu to control him, and escape.
    Also ninja tools are extremely useless through out most of the series, only really used to make fight scenes look cool

    • @yuvalamir3226
      @yuvalamir3226 Před 4 lety +6

      Firstly: It was only a problem when it actually took them time to use handsigns, they just got better. Just like it was such a big deal to learn how to walk on water at first. About chakra running out, what I said earlier also applies, they got more chakra reserves as they got better, but also, it definitely does come up, a LOT. sure they weren't burning through all their chakra in one small fight, it's just not that limited, but in very long fights it comes up a lot near the end of it, or when they have a lot of consecutive fights. First example that comes to mind but there are a lot more: czcams.com/video/8TeGjtlmM_I/video.html
      Secondly, even at the beginning, Sasuke had a pretty good amount of chakra; naruto just had so much more, but after him getting his curse mark and his intense training with Orochimaru AND LITERALLY OROCHIMARU"S CHAKRA, he got A LOT more than Deidara.
      Thirdly, did you forget about Sasuke's chidori blade? You know, that one ninja tool he used from the beginning of Shippuden, all the way to his "finale form"?

    • @vcamv2354
      @vcamv2354 Před 4 lety +8

      @@yuvalamir3226 Well, the point about the hand signs, yes, you could say they got better at it, but because of that the opponents simply stopped trying? Like, the only moment you can see someone trying to stop the opponent from completing a hand sign was the final Sasuke VS Naruto where he stopped all his hand signs to complete his own Jutsu, so, why never before? Even if you can do 100 hand signs in a second, your opponent should try to stop you. And the chakra thing was a problem cause first, Chakra was an energy of your body that tires you, that you need to build up inside you and canalize trough hand signs, but then, you could simply spam every move you want, not build up your chakra and go living your life. And we say about the "long fights" but they are only that long in the anime, if you look at the manga, from where the information really comes, battles are much faster, and that's the problem, when in EVERY FIGHT you have characters getting tired and then exploding with chakra cause they have a lot so they never run out, takes you away from the danger and belivability cause you know he will never be in a state where he can't make a jutsu or has to be logical to run away or survive, they can simply attack and attack and attack with almost no strategy cause they never run out of chakra, so they're never in true danger

    It's honestly so irritating
    In terms of how Chakra as a power system forces the story's characters to fight each other in clever and deceitful ways full of tactics (at least until the War arc in Shippuden), how it was originally such a unique, complex, tightly-knit and brilliant system with intricate limitations placed on it so as to not have characters going crazy with its powers, how it was ingrained into the actual world of Naruto and the culture of the 5 nations, how it adds depth to the characters - it was all so awesome
    I love a power system where even a weak character can defeat a strong opponent through the use of strategy and wits, and Chakra is up there in terms of Shonen power systems alongside Nen from HxH and Spiritual Pressure from Bleach
    That's why it makes me so disappointed, how Kishimoto manages to power-creep his story at an exponential rate over the course of just 1 arc
    At least with series like DBZ, the power-creep was more gradual and thus was a little less noticeable
    Naruto jumped to God-ninja stuff over the span of the last 1/4 of one goddamn arc
    And now even the monsters like Naruto and Sasuke are simply being manhandled by guys like Isshiki

  • @csfelfoldi

    Naruto fell in the same trap as DBZ where the author came up with a quantifiable concept of power then threw it out of the window in favor of power creep. Pain arc Naruto didn't need more power given to him, his arsenal needed to be expanded, that's where the whole show went from brilliant to a good mediocre shonen. This is the same issue why Black Clover is falling so fast, you give a power goal at the start of the story and personify it as the wizard king, if that is reached and surpassed by the first 150 chapters then your show is going to die an early death and the author of that manga planned it for as long as One Piece, yea lol it's already at it's last leg.

It wasn't brought up after because Kakashi wasn't actually teaching the team anything until that point in Shippuden. This was not made up on the spot.
    11:50 Ying and Yang chakra may have been named around chapter 500 but sever characters, like Shikamaru and Ino, were using jutsu that didn't fall into the normal application of chakra (ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu). So we knew there were more categories, they just didn't say the name. Mainly because we view the story through the eyes of Naruto and not characters using Yin and Yang chakra like Ino and Shikamaru. If it was from their perspective we would have learned the chakra types they were using sooner. That being said, this was also not made up on the spot.
    12:50 You not paying attention when reading the series does not mean Kishimoto is clumbsy. Authors aren't gonna info dumb their entire power system in one chapter. @Wrath Incarnate Not really. Togashi does that, but not every author is Togashi. The school is just for the basics. They didn't even teach Chakra control. Everyone who learned it learned it at home or because they studied it on their own. That school didn't teach much now that I think of it. Knowing that the elemental jutsu is Jonin, it makes sense that it's not being taught to kids. In fact the only people we really see use it are Jonin, Haku, Sasuke, and the Kage until part 2. Unless I'm forgetting a character.

    • @vcamv2354
      @vcamv2354 Před 4 lety +1

      No, we never knew that were more categories of chakra, cause we never knew that chakra had categories. We knew that we had ELEMENTAL JUTSU but elemental NATURE'S for the chakra you're born with. You can clearly see that Yin Yang was named in chapter 500 and everything that didn't fit the 5 caegories was just shoved onto that so we could accept it easier. And that's something people get wrong about that scene, I'm reading the manga from chapter one and Kakashi NEVER said chakra nature was Jounin level, he simply TOUGHT to himself "A child shouldn't know wow to use that type of Jutsu". And after that, we had Kakashi teaching Sasuke to use lightning and until now we only knew that Sasuke could use fire, and the elements were more like just categories of jutsus, with everyone being able to use all of them but some had more afinity with one or the other. When Kakashi was teachng Sasuke to use lightning to attack, Chakra's nature should've been adressed. And Kishimoto IS clumsy, cause author tends to HIDE the fact they havend't invented all therules of their power systems yet. They don't simply shove them in and call it a day, they do it in a way that you can go back to the start of the series and give new meaning to old things like, as an example, Observation Haki in One Piece: In Skypiea, Enel, a villain had the ability to see everything that happened in his island and could predict your movements when being attacked, at that point in history, it was called Mantra and was just a power they had, years later when Oda finally decided that Haki was a power system he created the Observation Haki which gave you the ability to sense\see things from long distances and predict your opponents moves and then, Mantra became that and the explanation now is that it was called Mantra cause Skypiea has a different culture where they call it Mantra. Do you see the difference?Even if Haki was not a thing at that point in history, when it was implemented, old events were retconed in a way that you could perceive them as "Oh, so Haki actually existed since here and he was just hiding that from us, clever man you are mister Oda". In Naruto, when you reach the last chapter and go back, things simply turn confuse and senseless cause they were never implemented on that smooth way, like, for exmaple, Shuukaku and Kurama were created by the same guy and always kne each other but when Naruto transforms in Kurama in his fight against Gaara, Shuukaku acts as if he never knew what a 9 tailed fox was and as if they weren't created by the same person. Or like, when you have the chakra explanations and you think like "Well but, what about shikamaru? And Ino? Where they fit in? If you say there are ONLY those 5, where does Shadow goes?" and then years later you have a reminder of like "Oh yeah, it was just Yin and Yang, no explanations. Everything that doesn't fit the 5 categories is Yin and Yang, just accept it"

    Two additionnal flaw you didn't really mention:
    Hands signs seem to become optional the further the series developped, whereas they seemed incredibly important early on, the first high power jutsu we see probably Zabuza's water dragon, and Kakashi had to copy a long ass sequence of handsigns, and it winds up being the longest (I think) in the entire show, when the power creep makes it a nearly inconsequential jutsu. Bit inconsistent there.
    Genjutsu: It's either vastly overpowered, or absolutely useless. We either have genjutsu that any story relevant character can dismiss, or genjutsu that no-one can. There's not much happening in between, genjutsu is too strong in it's effects and it boils down to either it works, or it doesn't (most of the time), and that's pretty bad design imo. Genjutsu winds up being dismissed as a plot-device and leaves Taijutsu and Ninjutsu to do all the heavy lifting in battle sequences.
    Edit: Oh third point that just came to mind: Chakra reserves. Jonins in the early days have absolutely nowhere near the amount of chakra available to them as most Chuunin do halfway into Shippuden, it's always presented in abstract terms and never quantified how much chakra any individual has, but it is a limitation that didn't find it's purpose later on in the series and loses any reference point from the early arcs. War Arc Kakashi must have 50x the chakra reserves Zabuza Arc Kakashi had.

Up until that point (to my knowledge) most of the rest of the cast can keep up, Hinata held her own against pain for a bit, Lee has his gates, Sakura can fuck up a landscape, Kiba has the three headed dog transformation and his techniques are pretty good generally, Shino's bugs are pretty powerful, Kakashi is Kakashi, Tea Asuma hold their own pretty well, especially Shikamaru, Guy even fucks up Madara, I haven't seen the entire series so I don't know how Neji did, Tenten got shafted but I'm not 100% sure she didn't start that way, cool ability though, and I can't remember anyone elses names.

And the entire Akatsuki has the ass kicked by the Edo Madara, and any member of Akatsuki destroys Zabuza. Kakuzu is said to have fought against the first Hokage, but thanks to Power Creep the guy became a joke.
      In this sense, I would like Naruto to be more like one piece, characters like Shanks or Mihawak that were presented early in the series, even 1000 chapters later, they are still monsters, they are legends, and are among the most powerful, even if they are overcome, and they will be, they will still remain among the most powerful, it is not as if Zoro was one-shot Mihawk at the end of the manga, or Luffy is so powerful to do the same with Shanks or with some of the Admirals.
      It would be interesting, if even after the end of the manga, and after Naruto becomes Hokage, if for some reason he had to fight Akatsuki again, Akatsuki would still be a threat to him, he would still win but would not be something he could do so easily. Currently you do not even need to make a discussion if Naruto would be able to wipe the floor with all Akatsuki.

      I actually have three different views on the whole Naruto franchise. I miss Naruto part 1 for sure. Back when strategy was crucial and things were at high stake and actually felt more threatening than the whole war arc in shippuden. It was gritty and detailed oriented. Once I got used to Shippuden’s style it began to grow on me despite the constant power buffs and plot holes towards the end. I wouldn’t have minded if they had ended Naruto after the fight with Sasuke. Showing Naruto as Hokage. Period. The end. That would have been just fine for me. I personally didn’t care for Boruto himself or the newer generation. This brings me to my third viewpoint, Naruto continued. Even after Naruto becomes Hokage, I still would have liked him and Sasuke fighting side by side now as friends instead of enemies versus whatever comes their way, including otsutski. I feel like Kishi could have done a better job with their characters and purpose. I always was intrigued with their Castle in their dimension and where they came from. It sort of becomes this Goku and Vegeta sort of thing. Goku is a material arts master but also a universe champion in some respects. So I also could see a series like that go far with Naruto and Sasuke instead of it just being “Naruto”. Idk just some thoughts on it. Boruto is alright but we all know the main characters will forever rock.

    Yin/Yang wasn't introduced at one time in chapter 500, it was a mysterious concept that generated lots of discussion anticipation and theory-crafting over the course of shippuden. First there were yin release techniques as far back as part 1, such as Yin healing wound destruction. In part 2 it was mentioned by Yamato and Kakashi but not explained to keep it simple for Naruto ( this was for the readers to start thinking ). Then Jiraya mentioned that Nagato had mastered all *6* changes in chakra nature ( another reminder of yin/yang ). Then Danzo brought out the Izanagi, which gave us our first look at how yin/yang gets to the fundamental nature of magic in the verse and just how powerful it is.
    I also don't agree with the idea that the fundamentals of the system has to be revealed early. The journey in Naruto is mostly learning more about the fundamentals of the world as you go through it. Just as we go deeper and further back into the history of the shinobi world, we go deeper and further back into the nature of chakra. It makes sense because if you really understand a system, there's no more mystery. If your system has a complete explanation you've just lost something for viewers to be interested in.

And I say this cause, as a writter myself, I do those kinda things! I create the begning, the end but I never work right on the middle, so it feels always like a race to get to the interesting part about the end, while letting the middle parte be messy as hell, cause in the major points, like Naruto VS Pain or Sasuke VS Itachi he does very well, but in the middle, in the progression for those amazing moments, is always choppy and bad executed. I'll do this in the future on my channel, where I'll go trough every arc of Naruto analyzing everything, picking aparte very plot hole, every error in wordbuilding and every Retcon just to see how much of them have and how much of a mess Naruto actually is, how much emotional manipulation the series use to grasp our attentions and everything, not to say that Naruto is bad, is actually in the middle, like, is not a good work, but it's not bad either, is just like... I've always considered Chakra a middle magic system in how it was implemented. It definitely has categories of a hard magic system where it is predictable and consistent. But I argue as the series went on, it lost a lot of that. One of my biggest frustrations with Kishimoto was his overeliance on eye-techniques and Kekkei Genkai. Specifically, the Uchiha clan. The Sharingan already was a really powerful ability with some good drawbacks. But Kishimoto made the fatal flaw of just arbitrarily adding on more and more powers. Brandon Sanderson in his rules of magic makes it clear that whenever expanding a magic system, you should go inwards and focus on existing elements as opposed to introducing newer abilities tied to it. So for example in the book Mistborn(his book), the magic system is metals. The user consumes metals in liquid and burns them. Tin is a metal that enhances senses and burns the less. In the final book, there is a character who learns that they can actively keep Tin burning for such an extended time that their senses can be permanently altered for the best. Keep in mind, this is an EXISTING ability but it is taken to its zenith. It isn't stacking on new powers arbitrarily, cough Izanami. But to be fair, a lot of Jump titles tend to do this.

      It holds to the fundamentals? I mean dude, Boruto as a pre-teen is somehow able to add chakra nature to a rasengan without clones or any type of hax. The fact that he was even able to completely master the base rasengan is already a huge stretch, as naruto wasn't able to create a rasengan without hax until the freaking war arc. But full on wind and lighting release too??? Naruto had to use 3 fuckin clones to do it until the war arc and even then he never mastered it without using hax until AFTER the the series ended. Not to mention that people like Minato and Kakashi, some of the most talented characters in the series, were never able to add chakra nature to the rasengan whatsoever. So yeah, I wouldn't say that the Boruto series is super great at aligning with the original series.

      @@Gabe7Gal the vanishing rasengan was created on accident just like the chidori. The Boruto’s vanishing rasengan and wind style are both incomplete. Boruto has had a better understanding of chakra natures than Naruto did early on. Minato just died before he could experiment more with the rasengan, besides he did the hardest part by creating the jutsu in the first place. Boruto being skilled and having a more beneficial academy experience doesn’t take away from the power system.
