Off-Road on a old Colorado Railroad route!

  • Rollins Pass off-road trail was the historical Rollins Pass railroad which saw trains reach about 12,000ft which we can now drive over. Before the Moffat Tunnel was built, trains had to negotiate the steep winding railroad route to get across the continental divide. Once the tunnel was built, the Moffat Hill route was no longer needed and became vehicle road. Through the years it has fallen into disrepair requiring ground clearance, AWD/4WD, and is no longer connected on both sides. learn about the trails, the camping, and see the beautiful scenery of both Rollins Pass Trails in this video.
    This is the fourth of a series of concentrated trail videos, but full length Trail Guides on these trails will be released as I get them edited. These are a new kind of video and may morph into mini-trail guides eventually (5 minute Trail guides), but due to my work schedule, I'm making them like this for now. Full Trail Guides are still my priority, just restricted on editing time currently (filming more though!). Feedback is greatly appreciated because I just make these based on what I would want as an offroader, but I make these for others so let me know!

    This weekly series is forcing me to edit and upload videos even if I don’t think they’re perfect. I ran out of time on this one (thought I would have 2 days off but work had other ideas). I’ll eventually link a cleaned up version (just audio tweaks) in this pinned comment if people want that, otherwise the trail guide of these trails will be polished.
    Next few videos will be shorter and true to the highlights idea for these videos, but I’m doing this so I can get Red Cone and Mount Blanca Trail guides moving along and uploaded sooner. I think you’ll love those!

    In 1974 I took my 1967 VW Fastback from the East Portal all the way across Rollins Pass. You would go through this unsupported tunnel and there is a warning sign that the road is not maintained and travel at your own risk beyond that point and the next thing I was driving across was an old railway bridge with no guardrails and what looked like a 1000 ft drop to the right heading west. I guess this has now been closed for some years. That last picture he posted was of Dog Face on the left and Monkey Face on the right from the old D&RG railroad tracks (now BNSF) in Larkspur, Colorado. That was cool to see. My mom was raised there.

      Some guy filmed me switching (orange hat, shiny vest)… I’m not a yard guy so I was bored and annoyed because I’m not supposed to be called for the yard. I’m also a locomotive engineer and dislike using remote locomotives like I was this day. They have a delay and are just not smooth enough for me. czcams.com/video/pPQiRpkJjU0/video.html
      I’m a road extra board conductor meaning I cover long distance trains that go west (into the mountains), east (to Kansas), or north (to Wyoming). I do really enjoy that especially when I go into the mountains during the daylight. I see some amazing things like giant mountain lions (that’s why I bought a off-road teardrop lol), but the schedule is chaotic. Anyway, I filmed the route on this deadhead and will likely publish it here even tho it’s not off-road in nature.

    In the transportation industry, deadheading is, among other things, when an off-duty employee takes a free ride, either for fun, or to travel to or from work. Airline pilots do this, and in my case, bus drivers.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers  Před 4 měsíci

      lol, deadheads by train are never for fun. That was filmed on a 14 hour day where I got paid a basic day and had my federal rest clock reset. This should have been a 3.5 hour van ride or 5 hour Amtrak ride and I think I worked 17 days straight when I filmed this. Thanks for watching!

      Not a slight against you, but most of us hate deadheads by train. My engineer and I (I was set back at the time) fought that one and lost. We eventually got this practice nixed because another engineer got sick in the Moffat tunnel from diesel fumes. I might be the only one who likes Amtrak deadheads, but I can’t stand Rocky Mountaineer Deadheads.
