  • That's the whole point of these patterns. You create a pattern, you do it, and then someone else will watch it and copy the pattern move for move and never take it anywhere, and then you have minds like a Jonathan Cruz that would pick up a pattern and then whether it's accidentally or not start doing it differently and then take the pattern somewhere else. That's the point that I want you to go home with today. You're learning these patterns. The objective though is to help the pattern evolve. Take it somewhere else. You're different than me. You're not rhythmically the same. You think differently than me. So it's like, I'm teaching you with regards to for example let's say "the swing pattern" the core movement but then it's your job to figure out a way to inject your personality, your rhythm, your timing. As long as it's not sounding sloppy. You need to figure out ways to take these patterns into different directions. That's the whole point of these art form.
Great, you can learn a pattern that I teach, that I upload to youtube, facebook or instagram but where are you taking the pattern? If you're just doing a pattern exactly as I show it and perform it in a video then I don't know, it's hard for me to really get excited when someone tags me on a video and they're like "hey Rob, I'm practicing" and all they're doing is a pattern that I'm teaching hundreds of people. If you're doing a pattern that hundreds, thousands of people know you shouldn't get excited about that. How are you any different? Tag me when you've figured out something to add to the pattern, then tag me and be like "Yo Rob, I'm practicing look what I came up with!"

I live for these uploads. When you break down what your student is doing wrong, I start breaking down and analyzing what I'm doing wrong in the same way. Maximum respect!💪

Hey Rob I know, it's hard for you to really get excited when someone tags you on a video and they're like "hey Rob, I'm practicing" and all they're doing is a pattern that you teaching hundreds of people. But for that individual where that pattern was a mystery and was never able to perform that pattern, and you broke it down in such a way that they can understand it, in a way where you took the mystery out of it and now they can perform it, that alone is a major accomplishment for that individual, which brings major excitement, with a big cheese smile where they can't contain them self. By they accomplishing that, you have just boost there confident that they can do anything and also letting them know that nothing is a mystery. You might think that you are just teaching someone who to do patterns but you are teaching more than that. You are bring pure joy to each individual who appreciate the art. Thanks Rod. wetalkinboutpractice. Solider in your army. Appreciate.

I notice that one of the key element in doing the swing pattern is to be able to have the ability to have each hand working independently doing two difference assignment at the same time but they are working together to have a seamless outcome. which is something that has to be learned. Most people can not do two separate different function with each hands at the same time, they may start but it always end up that they stop the function of one hand to assist the other hand, or one hand gets more of the brain power and the other hand drift off. This is like using a pair of headphones to mix and learning to listen in mono instead of stereo so you can hear two different audio source one in each ear, keeping the timing of each audio source and be able to mix them seamlessly. This was a new function I could not do back then because this was something new to me, that my brain had to learn. I could not separate the two different sound in my head, but as I continued to practice and became more comfortable with it I was able to accomplish it.

I really appreciate what you said about evolving. That's a brolic word that spark the Fire /Commitment in me to go to the next level, but first I have to get my brain and hand in sync with the pattern. This is all new to me and my brain and hands are learning a new pattern, hence the word evolution. Once I get and master the pattern then I can evolve by enhancing the pattern. I now see why I was not getting it, I am doing the copy cat pattern which is too fast, and this was due to not being able to control my excitement /emotion. I believe to get the note and one half I will have to first get my excitement /emotion in check and slow my hand movement down to get the note and one half. I really appreciate your knowledge and your willingness to share and the way you teacher. You break it down and bring it to the simplest form for anyone to understand. Thanks Rob. I love your swing patterns but I got to get past the chase first. wetalkinboutpractice. Solider in your army
