Teasel with Dr Patrick Jones + Teasel and Hops Pain Spray

  • My conversation with Dr. Patrick Jones ranged widely, from the wonders of teasel to amazing tales from Doc Jones’ veterinary practice, including how herbs helped heal severe wounds and treat rattlesnake bites. (That last one was my personal question.)
Teasel is an herb I admittedly don’t work with a lot, but it’s a fascinating plant, both in its gifts and how it grows. Doc Jones has seen it help multiple clients in his naturopathy practice with nerve pain or damage. You won’t want to miss the stories he relates about patients who were helped by teasel’s unique gifts! And as a listener, you’ll also receive free access to a downloadable recipe card for Doc’s Teasel & Hops Pain Spray.
By the end of this episode, you’ll know:
► The important role intuition can play in learning about herbs
► Why it’s smart to address pain from more than one direction
► How to identify and when to harvest teasel
► Why working with herbs may be challenging for some medical professionals (and the foundation they need for working successfully with both pharmaceuticals and herbs)
    ► and more…
For those who don’t already know him, Dr. Patrick Jones is a clinical herbalist, traditional naturopath and practicing veterinarian. Because of his veterinary credentials, he's been able to use herbs to treat cases most herbalists don't get to address. Cases like rattlesnake bites, gunshot wounds and serious disease make up his daily practice.
Because of the amazing things he's seen herbs do in both his naturopathy and veterinary practices, Doc has an evangelical zeal to teach others about medicinal plants. This passion gave rise to the founding of The HomeGrown Herbalist School of Botanical Medicine.
It was a delight to finally sit down with Doc Jones and I’m so happy to share our conversation with you today!

I went to visit my sister, and she was so sick for month, I had no idea it was that serious, and wend she said good bye, I understood how bad was, my husband said, listen everyone has to die, but I see your sister badly sick.. I got home asked the divine to help me, I went outside to all my herbs and pick, ginger, turmeric, oregano, mint, marjoram and some rosemary and I made 5 liters of tea. Next day We went back to her house and I served her the tea, she drank it, I told her son please give at least two cups twice a day. He did, my sister is standing up today, I did go every week then every two weeks, with the same quantity of tea for her. Of course, it was the one up there who I ask and he delivered, I am not religious, but a good prayer 🙏 yes!!! Thank you 🙏 for the show, yes I believe we all have plants everywhere we don’t know, but they are available to us, we all just have to make an effort and learn.

Doc is my mentor and I am a student in his school. He has a wealth of knowledge. I was looking for a way to learn about herbs in an in-depth and organized way (previously I was using the "hunt and peck" method of learning about herbs and I was all over the map and not confident...) and Doc's school filled the bill--and then some. I understand that people are concerned about finances currently, and I've been asked if I felt I "got my money's worth" so to speak, from the school. YES! What I learned/am learning in the school is worth much more than the cost of admission. I have become a confident herbalist because of what I've learned in the school and my family considers me their "primary care" person. I have addressed cold and flu, including Covid, injuries, tooth/gum issues, psoriasis, boil, stings, hormone issues, and so much more. Doc is available and approachable to his students and I really appreciate that. Love ya, Doc! (and you too, Rosalee!)

This was gold. Teasel was one of the first plants I was drawn to as a child too, I remember being driven to school one day and asking my dad what it was - he didn't know (the other was Hawthorn, which he did know!) I grow it in my garden now, but had no idea of this use for nerve pain. Thank you very much Rosalee for this excellent pod, and thanks to Dr. Jones for sharing this valuable information.

My cat just went through a fairly traumatic illness. I treated him with several herbs. Soaked his wound with Chamomile, Olive oil, catnip, rosemary... The greatest solution that came out of all this was to give him Ghee to move the stool out (He was severely constipated. Then because he was so weak and frail and underweight, I got him some chicken liver and hearts. Parboiled them and put them in the chopper. He gobbled them up. He is so much better now. He is a different cat. My vet is a natural healing vet. He gave me a Chinese Golden Healing Powder for his wound. Did wonderfully. He is all healed up and the fur is starting to grow back. Wish I had known about Marshmallow.

Thank you so much for this information. You are a great interviewer and a very sweet person. I live in New Mexico and I also have a lot of rattlesnakes. I bought Dr. Jones venom and sting product and have it on hand. We only had one rattlesnake this year, but we usually can find as many as 5 of them a summer. Not too much fun! I once heard Dr. Jones say dogs are dumb and when they hear that rattle sound they will just stick their head in further to see what it is and he said usually humans aren't that dumb. I guess that is why we don't get bit as much. But you never know when you might step on a snake or find them in your garden under the plants. I'm going to get myself some hops spray, my husband is having a pain in his cheek right now and that might help that. He just went to a dentist this morning and paid $500.00 for something to keep him from grinding his teeth. It probably won't even work! Thanks again, very interesting.

I think tincture are made with strong vodka like 80 to 100 proof and extracts aren't. I heard the lady from Rain Country channel on CZcams explain it, you could look on her channel. I forget what she said she uses for extracts, it was something less strong than vodka.

We usually call alcohol extracts, tinctures so they are the same thing. However, som tinctures are alcohol free-they are extracted with glycerin. Depending upon the herb you can extract the medicinal qualities with water, honey, ACV, vegetable glycerin, and oil.

The Teasel could be acting as a glial cell inhibitor.
