    www.bikebandit.com/?...
    Hour meters help keep track of the hours being put on a dirt bike. This is incredibly helpful for timing valve adjustments and top end rebuilds. Installing an hour meter on a dirt bike is relatively simple and is a great way to track usage. You can find a number of dirt bike hour meters on the BikeBandit.com website at www.bikebandit.com/gauges-indi...

    People asking about 2-stroke, just wrap the wire around the sparkplug rubber

  • @CarsnStuff
    @CarsnStuff Před 8 lety +1

    Does the wire that goes into the hour meter get somehow spliced when its pushed into the meter ? or does the wire just go inside uncut and gets a signal via induction ?

    does anything change if you have multipe spark plugs on a single cylinder?

    • @bikebandit
      @bikebandit  Před 9 lety

      Oklahoma ADV Hey OKADV,Most bikes that have twin plugs are that way because of emissions issues back in the era when the EPA started cracking down on manufactures to lower emissions. It was cheaper for the manufacture to add another plug and have it fire a split second after the first to burn any residual fuel rather than to completely redesign their engines to meet EPA guidelines. Modern fuel injection has basically made twin plugs obsolete. As far as how to hook up an hour meter to a twin-plugged bike, just wrap the pick-up wire around just one of the plug wires. It should work just fine like that. Keep us posted.

    Hello, How would this work on a used bike with only about 5 hours total on the bike? Is there anyway to set it already to 5?

    • @bikebandit
      @bikebandit  Před 9 lety

      Thomas Superty Hey Thomas,No way to set the meter to 5, and there is no way to reset them either, usually. The easy part for you is that the bike only has 5 hours on it, and that's pretty easy to remember. Hope this helps you.Thanks for watching our videos and for the comment. Sure, put the hour meter on another engine you don't care to log hours on. Maybe your car? Log 5 hours on the meter and then put it on your bike. No sweat!

    Wouldn't it make more sense to mount this electronic device in a place that is not vulnerable to water from washing the bike, not to mention mud splatter from the track? ... Like under the seat? (I will only need to see the read-out periodically). If you do want to mount it where you showed, how about first wrapping it in a clear plastic bag for some protection? Just some thoughts. Thank you for posting ... excellent video.

      +MrDirtBikess MrDB,You lost me. You have an hour meter, got it. It has a wire or not? What's the brand? Model?There are so many ways to build a hour meter, and you'll find them with one wire, two wires, and even no wire versions exist. Usually they're attached to, or at least near the spark plug wire. Keep us posted and we'll direct you as best as we can.Thanks for watching our videos and the question. You remembered to subscribe, right?

      +BikeBandit it's a genuine Yamaha dirt bike hour metre its brand new I opened it to put on my old bike but it never ended up getting put on it came with wire 2 screws and the hour metre it set I some how managed to find the screws the hour metre but Not the wire so I need to buy Some and I don't know what type to buy that's were I need the help . • @bikebandit
      @bikebandit  Před 8 lety

      +MrDirtBikess That is something that I don't know, as the gauge of the wire is not listed in any of my resources. Two choices would either to reach out directly to Yamaha, or just buy a new one. Now, if I had to guess, I'd guess that wire to be 16 gauge.

    • @MrDirtBikess
      @MrDirtBikess Před 8 lety

      +BikeBandit thanks mate appreciate it. Does it matter if I buy the wrong gauge wire

    • @bikebandit
      @bikebandit  Před 8 lety

      +MrDirtBikess Remember that wire gauge numbering is backwards...i.e. a 14g is thicker than a 16g.Go too thick and it might not clear the port on the side of the housing. Going too thin would be worse though, as too much power going through too thin a wire leads to heat. That can possibly fry your HM, or worst case scenario, set fire to the bike. Remember that the routing of that wire to the spark plug wire gets very close to the gas tank, and gasoline and uncontrolled spark is not a good combo. Try reaching out to Yamaha and see what they say. Dead end? Take a look at the BikeMaster HM. For $32, it's got 2 resettable modes, a total hour meter, and is actually backlit. Might be the best route to go.

      ColeGartner Hey CG,Thanks for subscribing to our channel. We try to make our videos both educational and fun, and we try to address topics for riders of all types of machines. Sometimes it'll be how-to plug a tubeless tire, and the next week it'll be how-to pack for a road trip. Back to the hour meter topic for s second, since hour meters aren't re-settable, they are usually left on the bike even when the bike is sold. They're only about $30 which is easily to recoup. It also shows the buyer of your bike that you value and care about maintenance.Thanks again for your business and support. Ride safe.
