      You guys should go to the Bob Marley museum in Kingston on Hope Road and Devon House for the best ice cream. You should also go to trench town in Kingston where Bob lived. Go to PortRoyal which was considered the wickedness place on earth during slavery. There is a musium there.
      It best to take a walk by the harbor.
      The maroons are not where you are they are in the mountains.
      When u go to the parish of St Ann go to where Bob Marley was born. It's a long trip where walking shoes. There is so much to see in Jamaica it would take 6 months.

      @@MissTrudyy the general penitentiary in Kingston is now a prison but that's where the slaves were kept after they disembarked from the ships. Those that weren't sold were sent there as rejects to die. Maybe someone can drive pass there and show you.

    A Jamaican lawyer, Dudley Thompson assembled the international legal team that defended Jomo Kenyatta in his trial after he had been arrested by the colonial government of Kenya in 1952 and subsequently charged with treason, accused of being an instigator of the Mau Mau rebellion. Later, as president, Jomo Kenyatta later declared, "This man saved my life." Enjoy Jamaica Miss Trudy.

    Welcome to Jamrock Wode & Ms Trudy. I think you guys will have a wonderful time. Our female National Hero Nanny had 5 brothers Cudjoe, Accompong, Quaco, Johnny & Cuffee. (ALL Warriors, freedom fighters) The Maroon community in St Elizabeth parish is named after Accompong. There are more in other parishes. I'm wondering IF their Surname was Accompong. So many similarities btwn Ghanians & Jamaicans. We tell Anansi stories and have The Junkanoo festival named after John Canoe the Ahanta/ Ayinde, Akan 18th century Chief. Some Akan/ Ewe words are in our Patwa Dialect. My Grandma used to make Asham & I recently learned that Ghanians do too. In Primary school I was in Aggrey Sports. I read somewhere thats a Ghanian surname. We say Chaka Chaka, Pram Pram, Passa Passa, Dibi Dibi, repeat our words like Ghanians do😊 ENJOY yourselves in JA.

    Maya I can fill u in on some Jamaican history like our famous nanny of the maroons was captured with her three brothers and taken to Jamaica they all became what we call maroons. They were Ashanti's from Ghana. Acompong cudjoe and quashi not sure if I spell his name right, were her brothers. Nanny settled in the blue mountains hills of Portland. Cudjoe settled in the hills of st. Mary on the other side of the mountain and acompong and quashi settled in the biggest maroon village between trelawny and st. Elizabeth

    Jamaica has three counties that the country has never learned how to use administratively to improve the island's local government structure (yowards the more timely maintenanceof the island's ever expanding network of rural/residential roads)...

    This really warms my heart. I hope Jamaica will warm yours and hope it feels like home.
    Jamaica is the largest English- speaking island in the Caribbean. Cuba is the largest, followed by Hispaniola (Haiti + Dominica Republic). Love that you guys landed in Kingston- the non- touristy side but hope you get to do some stuff on the north coast also. Dunns River Falls is visited by both Jamaicans and visitors. For some history in Kingston, you can also check out Port Royal; once the largest city in the Caribbean and also dubbed the "wickedest city on earth" at the time when Jamaica was under Spanish colonization. Then in 1692 an earthquake destroyed it and a lot of it sank. From there you can also take a little fisherman boat to Lime Cay for the rugged natural beach. By the way, in your other video you kept saying Jamaica is lush and green. Portland: my favourite parish is the definition of lush and green. Jamaica is hot all year! In the hills in might be a little cooler but still tropical. Mis Trudy as a Jamaican it was funny hearing you say Kingston habour water is blue because most Jamaicans consider it not nice for swimming. 😀You definitely will see truly blue water in other parts of the island.

    Jamaica was named by the Taino people. They called it Xaymaca which is translated "Land of wood and water."

    The houses around your T&T airbnb look nice. I'm surprised it takes two hours from Trinidad to Jamaica. I always thought the islands are within an hour distance of each other. Wait 3hrs?

  • @gfs45
    @gfs45 Před 4 měsíci +9

    Another plausible story is that the name Jamaica came from the indigenous Arawaks or Tainos (who were virtually wiped out by the European settlers), who called the island Xamayca, which means land of wood and water. It's said Columbus on his second arrival called it Jamaiqua. Conclusion: It may be that Jamaica is derived from a mix of all three including the Ghanian word.

    • @cleo63100
      @cleo63100 Před 4 měsíci

      The word ‘Jamaica’ actually derives from the Arawak (Tainos) word ‘Xayamaica’, meaning “Land of wood and water”.
      The first Jamaicans were the Taino Indians who settled in Jamaica around 600 AD. They were stone-age peoples who had migrated to Jamaica from the northern coast of South America…..

      Yeah I agree! I couldn’t believe it when he said that means stuck on an island in their language 🤯 and it sounds so close to the word Jamaica

    • @cleo63100
      @cleo63100 Před 4 měsíci

      So it was a nameless island waiting for African (Ghanaian specifically) slaves to give it a name? Yet the indigenous people had been there for over 2,500 years! You people are getting carried away by a fairy story! Ridiculous!
