  • In "The Truman Show," Jim Carrey's character, Truman, learns that his entire life is a lie and that he is the subject of a reality TV show. Before the film even hit theaters, a similar real-life scenario was taking place in Japan: Nasubi, a 22-year-old aspiring comedian, became an unwitting participant on a twisted reality show. A new documentary explores the show and its impact. Michelle Miller reports.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

Probably this guy was still new in entertainment industry in Japan and if he didnt follow what the network said, he thought his acting career would have not even began. assuming they forcefully made him sign a waiver. He could have just opened the door and escape but mentally exhausted then under mind controlled by tv producers ? sad part of Japanese culture who follow the order.

But the most grueling ones were hitchihiking abroad (crossing over Africa, Asia and South-America. Everybody looked like a homeless in no time.) The most memorable imo was the group sent to Cambodia to contruct a road reaching Angkor Wat (some 90 Km.) Absolutely brutal and emotional. PS. They could quit any moment, which some did.

Then the evil producer thought "hum, that's a good material." And off they went putting him with a female private teacher to study day and night for like 10 months for the entrance exam. And it was fascinating to see a "dumb" guy who couldn't do basic math in the beginning getting better and better. Still he failed the exam so next season they switched to lesser universities and eventually he got into quite a prestigious one.

I urge us all to consider how we each may be allowing ourselves to be controlled in some way. Not necessarily physically (although K-12 education does represent the physical control of children), but controlled by expectations of our family or society or our culture, etc. So, this man's experience is actually analogous to a central issue for us all: becoming aware of the extent to which we each experience "control" by external forces even though we are not under lock and key and our lives are not necessarily at stake . . .
And notice that we refer to television "programming," which actually names its potential impact on us - that viewing TV programs and commercials "programs" us to think in certain ways, believe certain things and accept certain views of what is acceptable.
So, we can ask ourselves, what does our internal guidance tell us about what is right for us? meaningful to us? meant to be for us, regardless of whether it fits others?
    Food for thought . . .

This is true depravity! Poor man was deeply exploited and suffered real life long trauma. As a mere viewer, I’m traumatized by what he went through; I can’t even bear to watch the documentary. This brief news segment exposing some of what this man was subjected to is triggering. So can you imagine how he feels and what he endured and the pain and agony that audiences didn’t even see or know about?! This is real horror. Solitary confinement and public humiliation. 15 months of this abuse he suffered alone in complete isolation. Naked and eating dog food to sustain himself. Forcing him to complete tedious mind numbing task to try to win food so he doesn’t starve to death all the while losing his grip on reality and physically, emotionally, and mentally suffering. His mental health in absolute decline. He went thru all that and more that we aren’t even aware of! So let that all sink in! At that rate, I’m surprised he didn’t have a mental breakdown or complete mental collapse! Humans are not built for this. There are lifelong repercussions this man has faced and will continue to face bc of this exploitative and abusive show. Every sick person involved on this dehumanizing, repulsive production should be fined, charged, and serve 3-5 years in prison for this man’s cruel imprisonment. For the sake of entertainment, they tortured and punished an innocent human being. I’m so hurt and sad for him. Mistreatment and abuse of a human being on a whole other level. It’s sickening and the inhumanity is shocking. If this were my loved one, I would be so devastated for them. He should sue the parent company, the show, executives, and producers responsible for this dehumanizing 15 month long broadcast of a man losing his hold on reality while he suffers a brutish fate of complete isolation and starvation all the while naked. What they did to this man is humiliation and violence on a grand, epic scale. The producers and individuals involved in this show are sick in the head and what they did is torture him for entertainment and money. They are responsible for his mental unraveling and painful demise during and after the show. This is beyond sick and cruel and truly unspeakable. How can they justify their actions? They deserve to be locked up for torturing the poor man.

Some editorial decisions in the reporting here. Nasubi was informed of all this beforehand and also the tv show only showed the highlights, but you could go online and watch him at any time you wanted during the 15 months. He was also allowed to quit whenever he wanted to. He wasn't being held against his will.

As a Japanese I am really suprised this old famous tv show is on the oveseas media now. Back then, JP broadcast media had no morality at all. They wanted to do anything if they could get high viewer rate. Especially newcomer comedians or talents were treated very harsh because TV stations exploited their motivations to want to be famous, and I think this inmorality still extists in some extent.

It’s crazy because it’s kind of like what you saw in Squid Game. The contestants don’t know what they’re getting into, and are being watched by guards and celebrities, then decide to vote to leave only to be brought back. He was given a trip to an amusement park, food, then blindfolded and taken BACK to the tiny room to spend more time in. Sad.

Even as this story is told here in the states they make it sound like he wasn't made to do this against his will. This guy from my understanding was psychologically tortured for months, and when the story comes here it almost feels like we're sensationalizing it the same way. It just reminds me of kidnapping somebody, making them rely on you as their captor, etc. It's honestly just sick and I'm not going to go into the details because it feels like that's exactly what happened to this man. To me it's wild people act like slavery ever ended.

He was an ambitious young comedian in the tv scene. The system works over there that young up and comers tv actors who are interesting get picked up and integrated into hugely successful shows, becoming huge rich celebrities. That was his goal. He knew this was part of a show that could get him fame and fortune, and it did. He was free to leave anytime. And nudity is not so terrifying over there. It is a bit embarrassing but people are often naked in social settings casually there. This is still traumatizing but he could leave anytime and quit. And he chose not too because he knew it was a huge challenging opportunity.
